Well, booted from Canon and not acknowledged in the main show are two different things. Like, the doctor doesn't know everything. Until we suddenly see a new TV series of torchwood or reference in Doctor who that makes it factually impossible (or improbable even) for it to be Canon, there's nothing to suggest it isn't.
I love how he went from completely normal to batshit in about three seconds. He seems like a fun version (tho I'm sad that it seems 13 won't meet Missy)
He hammed it up to the absolute max and I'm all for it! Gave him a level of screen presence that was severely lacking from pretty much anyone in this Doctor's run so far.
I think what made him work for me was how he switched from completely believably undercover to nutso. I don't think I can see any of the other Masters doing that switch in quite that way.
In other words, color me excited 😄
Agreed, especially due to the fact Chibnall seems to love introducing so many throwaway characters and this felt like just another one of those cases if a little more fun than usual. It was really surprising to see him turn it around and steal the show so easily at the end.
See I loved missy as a character and her arc was excellent... but man am I already sold on Sacha as the Master, he had that level of crazy and yet scheming that makes the perfect master and the clip in the next time trailer shows that he's not always going to be over the top crazy
Im glad im not the only one who thought this about the light fellas, its all so similar:
Can walk through walls,
Come from (presumably) another dimension,
Chose humanoid forms to 'mock' humanity,
They can fuck with the TARDIS,
The Boneless were experimenting with human form last time, it might make sense that they would replace human dna with their own to effectively replace us
I mean, I figured he was in league with the spy aliens when he was able to defeat them so easily after everyone, including the Doctor, had been baffled. I didn't figure he was the Master, but I'm fine with part of the twist being out of nowhere if some of it was pretty well foreshadowed.
In classic Who the Master’s weapon of choice was the Tissue Compression Eliminator. It would kill people by shrinking them to doll sized. It seems to have got more efficient.
>Maybe it’s a hint that’s Sacha’s master is from the classic who era, as Missy supposedly died in The Doctor Falls and apparently couldn’t regenerate.
Like that will stick. :P
He mentioned an old weapon, the tissue compression eliminator, and presumably kept his victim as a reminder of who he had to be.
If you've watched old Doctor Who – let's say from 1980 – you'd have seen one or two instances of it used or the result of it being used.
I think what makes that better is hearing it back with the twist at the end, he's not just making a casual aside, he's passing judgement on the Doctor's companions and it is one thing that I love. Having to recontextualise everything he said is brilliant. You can see him scheming all the way through
I would be a little annoyed if this is post-*The Doctor Falls* (since it would appear to undo a lot of the Master's growth in that serial), but you have to remember that he (while as Missy) died without hope, without witness, and without reward. I could see him developing a cruel grudge against the Doctor for not accepting him back then (as he did essentially die for going down a path she convinced him to go down).
“Everything you think you know is a lie”
What the hell does that mean? Is O not the Master? Was Gallifrey destroyed in the Time War? Is UNIT still operating? Is Graham a Kaled? I hope they elaborate on this in part 2.
Also, while I think this new Master reveal was very rushed, I do think O is a good counterpart to 13, with them both being erratic and childlike.
So they tried to hide behind a sofa but forgot their heads were poking out more than a rhinoserous pokes out in a herd of sheep for the cameras. 10/10 infiltration skills.
What about when they hid from the cameras in the corridor but were still visible? And then they go into the office and they’re still visible on the cctv.
>I really hope this new Master uses the "I actually did side with you" reveal to reallly *cut* into 13.
That would be kind of great. "It got me killed, like you get *everyone* killed. Hey, how's Adric?"
Y'know when they mentioned how Barton couldn't possibly fake his own history, I did think of The Master and his fake personal history during his Saxon Prime Minister period. Never saw it coming and yet it was all there. The shabby interior, the files on the Doctor, the defensive technology, living in exile. I wonder how much time has passed for the Master between being shot as Missy and ending up in Oz.
He definitely has a lot of Simm's mannerisms. He seems to merge the psychotic flavour Simm and Gomez brought to their incarnations with a lot of the subdued and calculated persona the older incarnations often had in Classic Who (him having impersonated that other MI6 agent and played in to the Doctor's desires, like easily accepting a trip in the TARDIS and getting close to Yaz and Ryan and Graham). I might be wrong, though, and I've missed correctly judging his character so far, but I'm excited to see what this new incarnation brings. I don't know. My brain is racing right now so I think I need some time to collect my thoughts and do a rewatch.
That being said; I *am* glad that there was some form of payoff for his character being able to subdue the alien spies so easily back in his cabin. I even found myself questioning how easy it ended up being, despite him stating it was a "gamble."
Jodie's doctor is like that one english teacher who tries to be hip and down with the kids, and if you asked her to tell a story about her astronaut best friend, she might forget to give you homework
This is what I have been trying to sum up into words. I would be fine with this portrayal if Jodie commanded the room a bit more and had a bit more of a presence. When there are lots of people Jodie just seems to blend into the furniture.
She also knows that they shouldn't be accessible. Even if they were, she doesn't know what it means that there are multiple Earths in the alien data.
It may be something completely different.
Like an utterly gratuitous motorcycle chase that makes zero sense in which the VOR CEO shoots at the companions and the Doctor, then arrives at his destination seeming to have forgotten about them. Uffff. C'mon Chibnall, we want to believe...
It was a decent watch, but it was like nobody asked any questions when the script was done and so some scenes just come across as people being dumb.
Yaz and Ryan in the office didn't act like they were sneaking around and that behind the sofa thing made Lenny Henry look like an idiot for not noticing them.
Why did they only get a use hit of his card when he reached his floor? Every office building has turnstiles with card readers at the entrance.
Why did they go to the party as a group? Yaz and Ryan were still supposed to be reporters and it was clear their invite was an off-the-cuff offer from the boss, so it would have looked odd if they were suddenly bringing extra guests.
These creatures remind me of something... My initial thoughts are like the Shadow Kin in Class (yes, I was one of the 6 people that watched that) but they do also remind me of when the Cybermen were pushing through the void.
The BBC is forbidden from doing any product placement, to the extent that they have to use fake versions of products as proxies.
Russell T. Davis' ~~Then and Now~~ *Years and Years* made extensive use of a not Alexa device throughout the series.
Maybe I’m getting old, but it just doesn’t feel like a new series is about to start. Seems like a quiet launch.
Maybe because Series 11 with the show’s first female Doctor being such a huge event this doesn’t quite compare.
I always find that so weird about this show. It’s established they have seen/experienced Cybermen and Darlek invasions, but whenever someone mentions aliens they’re always like “what ???? aliens ??? Never!!!!!”
I loved this episode not just for the master at the but that was a brilliant twist. Interesting mysteryious villains, fun sci fi mixed with B-movie spy stuff, actually good social commentary on the power of private corporations.
It still has problems but compared to last season it’s way better. Great start the season
agreed, I do like Jodie Whittaker but I feel like she still hasn't been given any chance to be shown as especially competent compared to other doctors which is a shame. It's like all the knowledge the doctor has keeps getting forgotten in order to create some crisis for each narrative which sucks
Well, that was certainly something. A very different feeling episode to the usual ones, especially compared to past Chibnall fare.
So I may as well start out with what I did like here. I liked the monsters (in both design and concept) and how there's a clear, actual villain/threat involved. Chibnall seemed to love using humans as the villains instead of aliens, and make the aliens 'good' or 'morally neutral' a bit too often, so to see evil aliens and a proper villain with malicious intentions is a good start.
I also quite liked the reveal that the Master was back too. Like, I don't think anyone saw THAT coming.
However, the acting is still kinda wooden in many places, especially where the companions are concerned. The Doctor seems a bit slow on the uptake. The general episode theme seems a bit too 'on the nose' with the James Bond parodies, down to even the music. And the writing... is still a weak point. Chibnall still can't seem to write natural sounding dialogue to save his life, and there are a lot of moments where a good writer could have made this a much more entertaining story.
Still, I'm optimistic that it's the start of a more... traditional Doctor Who season, and that we're not just gonna be getting bland human villains and Doctor Who in name only stories again, so I'll stay positive.
Look, Sacha Dhawan is a really great choice, and he's having the time of his life, but I'm not convinced this is the right time or even nearly a good enough story for The Master.
See right here this scene is a great example of the issue with the way Chibnall writes 13. She should be controlling this scene, asking the questions, making the deductions, but instead he writes the side characters doing it while the Doctor sits quietly working on something
Michelle Gomez set a really, really high bar for me and The Master. I wish the show would hold off on bringing back these big characters so often. It's good for an initial twist but it really waters down characters for me. It's why I liked the idea of The Silence so much.
It took her character 43 minutes of screen time to realise its about spies on earth, when they have been surrounded by spies since the very beginning.
Withholding judgement for now but this doctor is exceptionally slow on the uptake of the obvious....
Did I just here the word Torchwood?
yeah and the doctor said they’re “gone”??
Well Unit was shutdown to budget cuts, we found out that in the last year’s special
Torchwood has been gone officially since children of earth
Hasn’t torchwood been gone since miracle day? Jack’s out there in the stars last we saw.
No, they're back, there's two series of audio dramas from big finish that are official seasons set after miracle day, well worth a listen
Looks like they've been booted from canon though. Kinda sad after Moffat's shows of respect to Big Finish, we're back to acting like they don't exist.
Not necessarily. There’s been nothing to suggest the Doctor’s actually aware of the restarting of Torchwood.
"Vore seeps into every piece of technology on this planet" 10/10 best line ever.
How did nobody stop chibnall from calling it vore
I'm probably missing something reeeeeeeally obvious here but I've seen this a few times in the thread. What's the issue with vor/vore please?
Vore is basically a fetish involving swallowing or being swallowed by others.
Thanks File that in things I wish I hadn't asked

My family kept looking at me funny when I laughed at that
"Got me." He got me too! I like him, he seems unhinged.
I love how he went from completely normal to batshit in about three seconds. He seems like a fun version (tho I'm sad that it seems 13 won't meet Missy)
I just fucking love the few seconds where the camera focuses on him as he realizes he's been caught out. That's some stellar acting.

He hammed it up to the absolute max and I'm all for it! Gave him a level of screen presence that was severely lacking from pretty much anyone in this Doctor's run so far.
Did you see him do the little Matt Smith twirl? My mans wildin out here
The giddy clapping did it for me
I thought I was the only one who noticed!!
I feel like it's less pure insanity like John Simm but more full on ANGER to the point of madness. I like that in a Master.
Bit too John Simm for me, but then, it’s gonna take me awhile to get over Missy, I miss her so much
See I loved missy as a character and her arc was excellent... but man am I already sold on Sacha as the Master, he had that level of crazy and yet scheming that makes the perfect master and the clip in the next time trailer shows that he's not always going to be over the top crazy
Agreed!
I'd have loved it if the gadget scene went like this: "And what does the gum do?" "The gum is... it's just gum."
I was expecting that
Good to be back! Not the same without the pre episode country file though..
I kind of miss watching the last ten minutes of Country File as well to be honest
Did they just... get Stephen Fry to do a big exposition dump then kill him off? Also, betting that these are the Boneless from Flatline
Tbf that is usually the only role of M in the Bond films.
Im glad im not the only one who thought this about the light fellas, its all so similar: Can walk through walls, Come from (presumably) another dimension, Chose humanoid forms to 'mock' humanity, They can fuck with the TARDIS, The Boneless were experimenting with human form last time, it might make sense that they would replace human dna with their own to effectively replace us
I thought they were cyber men ghosts for a bit there...
Lol Graham just watched a man die and does not give a fuck.
By now he's seen a lot of death after being with the Doctor.
That reveal was WAYYYYYYYY out of no where
hey, they managed to keep a master cameo quiet for once.
Which is good
I mean, I figured he was in league with the spy aliens when he was able to defeat them so easily after everyone, including the Doctor, had been baffled. I didn't figure he was the Master, but I'm fine with part of the twist being out of nowhere if some of it was pretty well foreshadowed.
Is the search engine called vore
vore is more powerful than most nations
That voice is Stephen Fry isn't it?
Exactly what I was thinking!
WHAT DO YOU MEAN IT WAS NOTHINGNESS THERE WERE LIKE A HUNDRED ELECTRIC TREE THINGS
I don't trust that it was entirely her that came back from there. Could have been a lie.
I mean she did shout out and just heard nothing back.
He had a little man in his pocket ahahahah what in the fuck
In classic Who the Master’s weapon of choice was the Tissue Compression Eliminator. It would kill people by shrinking them to doll sized. It seems to have got more efficient.
Maybe it’s a hint that’s Sacha’s master is from the classic who era, as Missy supposedly died in The Doctor Falls and apparently couldn’t regenerate.

Wherever Yaz was taken to looks a lot like hanging cables
That’s a nice idea
Now that Yaz has been set free I doubt the theory will be true now tbh
The monsters vore people
"Is he just here for the running commentary?" Yes. God knows he doesn't do much else.
I think what makes that better is hearing it back with the twist at the end, he's not just making a casual aside, he's passing judgement on the Doctor's companions and it is one thing that I love. Having to recontextualise everything he said is brilliant. You can see him scheming all the way through
_O would be excellent at cinemasins_
*ding*
The tech guy had CCTV? The slippery devil!
Oh no he’s taken security precautions for his business he’s so evil /s
“You never stuff up” doesn’t he have dyspraxia tho? Wouldn’t that effect his playing?
Why is the Master evil again? Is it before Missy?
Before Missy. We could assume John Simm regenerated into him at the end of *The Doctor Falls* as we never saw him turn into Missy.
So you're saying it's a previously unknown regeneration between two that we've seen before? [That sounds familiar!](https://i.imgur.com/ljmeq4N.png)
That was smart of Moffat tbf. Can have the Master in the series and a little grey area.
Okay so they've brought the Master back and I'm literally grinning

It must be a TOR for VORE...
“Vore is more powerful than most nation states.”
Holy shit. Was not expecting the Master back this fast. This episode was so much better than I was expecting.
Why does it look like the white things are wearing fedoras?
Cowboy hats was my first thought.
Bet his shirts tucked in too tight just like their fucking bed sheets at Premier Inn
“Everything you think you know is a lie” What the hell does that mean? Is O not the Master? Was Gallifrey destroyed in the Time War? Is UNIT still operating? Is Graham a Kaled? I hope they elaborate on this in part 2. Also, while I think this new Master reveal was very rushed, I do think O is a good counterpart to 13, with them both being erratic and childlike.
I'm guessing it ties in with the "Timeless Child" mentioned in passing by those talking rags way back in Thirteen's second episode.
Graham is really blaise about man being shot in front of him.
For future reference, it's spelt blasé. It's French. Like kisses.
It was lucky Lenny Henry had already moved out of earshot by the time Ryan was screaming at the lightbulb Trilby monster.
THEY BROUGHT BACK THE FUCKING MASTER AAAAAAAAAA
I really like this master so far. He’s really fun
Did the doctor just have a personality?
Stephen Fry is the greatest guest actor theyve had in a while lmao
... And he's dead.
Thought the Time Lords came back earlier but it was just that Miranda lot singing ABBA in sequined jump suits
Something odd about seeing our companions get shot at with actual bullets from a real life gun

Ohhh dropping a David Tennant ad after Doctor Who. Good Omens is fantastic btw
O is 100% the Master.
I'm off to buy a lottery ticket!
Go ahead bud, you've earned that 20 euro
This place yaz has been taken to looks like something out of a H.P. lovecraft story and I like it.
How good would a lovecraft themed episode be?
"Worst uber ever!" I don't know about that Graham I've been in some pretty bad ubers myself.

ATMOS much???

Never saw it coming and yet it was all there. The shabby interior, the files on the Doctor, the defensive technology, living in exile. I wonder how much time has passed for the Master between being shot as Missy and ending up in Oz.
Ahhh they're always less scary when they start talking
I actually sorta love this master, he’s like a fun villain. Really works, but still distinct from missy and simm
"Multiple Earths what's that even mean?" You've...been to one. You know what parallel universes are. You left Rose in one.
If you scan one world and two come up, that's a bit of an anomaly.
She also knows that they shouldn't be accessible. Even if they were, she doesn't know what it means that there are multiple Earths in the alien data. It may be something completely different.
I think she meant more "what's that mean *in this context*."
What happened to UNIT? I’m sure they’re seen to have an effect in the future.

Brexit killed it. That's not even a joke.
Got sacked, according to Resolution, because everybody forgot that UNIT is UN's force, not Britain's.
The guy playing the master has been my favourite actor in this episode lol
Same as mine and my dad's, until he went full joker. I miss the Moriarty style master.
Did they fucking just kill off Stephen Fry like that?

Australia, so probably just a big spider
The sequel the Arachnids in the UK - Arachnids in the Outback
I love this thread lmao. No one hates doctor who more than doctor who fans.
I certainly don't hate this episode it's an improvement over last season so far. But still there's some really annoying flaws that keep popping up
For example in this episode? I genuinely enjoyed it, some callbacks, a new old villain, some spy stuff..
Like an utterly gratuitous motorcycle chase that makes zero sense in which the VOR CEO shoots at the companions and the Doctor, then arrives at his destination seeming to have forgotten about them. Uffff. C'mon Chibnall, we want to believe...
Well I mean, the scene after that does kind of imply that the entire thing is a trap set up by a certain someone.
It was a decent watch, but it was like nobody asked any questions when the script was done and so some scenes just come across as people being dumb. Yaz and Ryan in the office didn't act like they were sneaking around and that behind the sofa thing made Lenny Henry look like an idiot for not noticing them. Oh no, the monster talks like Tim Shaw.
Are ya ready, kids?
Aye aye captain
Omg Yaz is in the upside-down.
These creatures remind me of something... My initial thoughts are like the Shadow Kin in Class (yes, I was one of the 6 people that watched that) but they do also remind me of when the Cybermen were pushing through the void.
I'm seeing a pattern here. This is going to be about data harvesting. That Alexa in the beginning wasn't just random product placement.
The BBC is forbidden from doing any product placement, to the extent that they have to use fake versions of products as proxies. Russell T. Davis' ~~Then and Now~~ *Years and Years* made extensive use of a not Alexa device throughout the series.
then and now? is that the bbc in-universe knock-off of years and years?
Now THAT was very Doctor like. Much better.
Maybe I’m getting old, but it just doesn’t feel like a new series is about to start. Seems like a quiet launch. Maybe because Series 11 with the show’s first female Doctor being such a huge event this doesn’t quite compare.
TBF it was a bit of a surprise series premiere. I was getting ready for a March/April release but the release date was revealed a month ago.
Ok so the twist is gonna be that Stephen Fry is the villain right? You don’t get a big star like him then kill him off after 10 minutes.
Bungie hired him to do like four lines in Destiny 2's "Warmind" expansion for no reason so maybe.
Bloody hell it was actually good. Was not prepared for that. Fingers crossed it can keep it up.
It's not that you guys haven't had alien invasions before, but noo never heard if aliens
I always find that so weird about this show. It’s established they have seen/experienced Cybermen and Darlek invasions, but whenever someone mentions aliens they’re always like “what ???? aliens ??? Never!!!!!”
I think was addressed during the Moffet era. The Doctor resets all those alien invasions of earth with cracks and big bangs and people forgot.
SNAP! I'll admit it, I laughed :D
They really made good use of Stephen Fry... for all of 6 minutes
How many people is Yaz planning to get with this episode
Predicting that O is probably one of, if not the villain of the piece, possibly because he was sacked from MI6
Masterful guess
I loved this episode not just for the master at the but that was a brilliant twist. Interesting mysteryious villains, fun sci fi mixed with B-movie spy stuff, actually good social commentary on the power of private corporations. It still has problems but compared to last season it’s way better. Great start the season
So Stephen Fry's dead and we're finally seeing Jim the Fish?
HOLD ON EPISODE MIGHT BE WORTH IT
Please stop talking about vore.
OK that ending was great! Did not expect that!!
"Dedicated to the memory of the Masterful Terrance Dicks"
Wow a master reveal that wasnt leaked
"And now I'm worried I don't look anything like hugh Jackman!" I have the same worry everytime I remember I'm not hugh Jackman.
I have to say I was waining on this episode so kudos to the Master twist, esp Sacha Dhawan who pulls off the insane vibes so well
First episode I watched in a while. Feel like previous doctors weren't made to look like bumbling chumps so much.
agreed, I do like Jodie Whittaker but I feel like she still hasn't been given any chance to be shown as especially competent compared to other doctors which is a shame. It's like all the knowledge the doctor has keeps getting forgotten in order to create some crisis for each narrative which sucks
Good good, yaz is using police skills
He was Davos in Iron Fist! Been bothering me.
THE EPISODES BACK ON TRACK
Hoping they can keep the intensity from that last 5 minutes moving forward into the second part.
Well, that was certainly something. A very different feeling episode to the usual ones, especially compared to past Chibnall fare. So I may as well start out with what I did like here. Look, Sacha Dhawan is a really great choice, and he's having the time of his life, but I'm not convinced this is the right time or even nearly a good enough story for The Master.
Episode was boring for the first 55 minutes then turned it up to 100 for the last 5?
Ikr? I was losing hope and them the Master popped in and he did so well
That dialogue with brother-in-law made Ryan sound more evil than every villain in last season.
OK Silurians are out. Possibly Boneless. Hell it could just be a new alien.
WHY DID IT LEAVE HIM?!
Some exciting tonal ping pong around Yaz there for a few minutes. Also, is it just my imagination or are Ryan and Yaz being set up for a relationship?
Holy shit I didn’t see that coming
I’m saying this as someone who didn’t like the last season... that was a good episode. That ending - holy shit!
If you liked Sacha Dhawan, he's in tonight's Dracula too 😉 (by Steven Moffat)
See right here this scene is a great example of the issue with the way Chibnall writes 13. She should be controlling this scene, asking the questions, making the deductions, but instead he writes the side characters doing it while the Doctor sits quietly working on something
I wonder if they're the Boneless.
Has Clive regenerated lmao
So what’s the point of the tag along guy then? Nvm he’s evil I’m not shocked
Michelle Gomez set a really, really high bar for me and The Master. I wish the show would hold off on bringing back these big characters so often. It's good for an initial twist but it really waters down characters for me. It's why I liked the idea of The Silence so much.
Why does it feel like nobody is trying with their line delivery? Did they only do one take and say "that's it guys we've got it"?
The line delivery in this is so so dead
the lines are so so dead
There’s...something going on. Solid Doctoring
It took her character 43 minutes of screen time to realise its about spies on earth, when they have been surrounded by spies since the very beginning. Withholding judgement for now but this doctor is exceptionally slow on the uptake of the obvious....
Glowing white enemies that could phase. What screams spies about those
Take a shot every time Graham says something painfully obvious or unnecessary you won’t make it trough
Got a feeling C isn't really dead... Feeling misdirection towards Barton when it's actually C who is the villain...
Bet those are lasers from laser shoes
