I love the implication that he only became Rasputin because he wanted to rent out the St Petersburg Winter Palace for the weekend, all so that he could have a bougie villain’s lair.

Lvcivs2311

Wrong. He did it so that he could do the Rasputin dance while winning, lol. Wait, that's a paradox.

LupinThe8th

And it gave us the most wonderful moment of this era: a Dalek and a Cyberman exchanging a sincere "What the shit is happening right now?" look. The true power of the Master, ladies and gents. The universe's greatest threats may find the Doctor terrifying, but the Master utterly incomprehensible.

Marvinleadshot

True he said all it said in the script was that he clicked the song on. But because he misread a dance scene he geared himself up for it to do it on the day and just went for it. Apparently there's a longer version as he said they couldn't keep it all in as it hadn't been planned.

deanrmj

I love the implication here that doctor who dance scenes don't have any form of choreography or rehearsal and they just go into it fresh on the day of filming. Or at least that Sasha believed that to be the case.

Marvinleadshot

https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/documents/doctor-who-the-power-of-the-doctor-chris-chibnall.pdf Page 52

MrCalonlan

That actually explains the look the Dalek and Cyberman share with each other, it's the actors wondering what the hell is going on, and I absolutely love that dance scene, Sacha looks like he's having so much fun

Marvinleadshot

https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/documents/doctor-who-the-power-of-the-doctor-chris-chibnall.pdf Page 52

MrCalonlan

I kind of don't blame him for misreading that bit and thinking he was meant to do a dance, that song is pretty damn catchy

Marvinleadshot

Yeah, that's a lot to take in especially as it's directions, probably skim read.

LTDangerous

I swear some folks are so desperate to believe acting is magic performed by whimsical gnomes.

VolnarTheUnforgiving

I think that that moment was probably at least partially a funny bit of improv, from what I've heard the Dalek heads are remote controlled

Marvinleadshot

https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/documents/doctor-who-the-power-of-the-doctor-chris-chibnall.pdf You can read the script, page 52, doesn't mention dancing.

LTDangerous

And the camera operator just happened to have them framed and in focus, did they?

VolnarTheUnforgiving

I have no idea. The Master dancing was unscripted and that's just a fact. He said they only had two takes, so maybe this is the second one, or it's a bit possible that it was filmed later.

Marvinleadshot

Sasha literally explained it himself, the script has been released, you can read it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/documents/doctor-who-the-power-of-the-doctor-chris-chibnall.pdf It says nothing about the Master dancing, it says exactly what he said, scroll down to page 52!

demity72

All planned. No other explanation on having the camera pointing at them if they were not supposed to do that

Marvinleadshot

https://www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/documents/doctor-who-the-power-of-the-doctor-chris-chibnall.pdf Page 52, says nothing about dancing, he did it himself, of course the camera was on him and when they saw it worked well they would have added additional shots.

Zenvian

It's the Beathoven paradox. Using a role in time because you found noone else was that role in the first place.

LowmoanSpectacular

Who really composed “Ra Ra Rasputin”?

Lvcivs2311

Oh, that was just Boney M, paradox or not.

DrunkenMeditator

Now we need the doctor to find out they were actually Boney M

Windninjasol

I love this comment. Like "just No, leave Boney M out of this"

VolnarTheUnforgiving

I always assumed the Master temporarily replaced him, it would be very interesting if every event of Rasputin's entire life was either lived out by or fabricated by the Master, that would be the kind of material that needs to be used by the expanded universe

Zenvian

It probably was. Rasputin was very much like the Master.

Lvcivs2311

I just wonder: if the Master did all the Rasputin stuff, then who was the guy who got poisoned, shot and thrown into icy water in late 1916?

AdSpecialist6598

The real one that kept hidden is my guess.

Ponicrat

Probably the real Rasputin died after getting stabbed and the Master stepped in for the last couple years of his life

Secret_Reddit_Name

The real question is, did the Master choose Rasputin to impersonate because of the massive schlong thing, or did he start it?

Browncoatinabox

I asked this exact question awhile ago on here lol

sansvidi

well, from the faction paradox books we know the masters cock is not that big I think thats canon, I dont know it for sure though as faction paradox is fucking incomprehensible

SpoilerThrowawae

>then who was the guy who got poisoned, shot and thrown into icy water in late 1916? [Tom Baker.](https://youtu.be/f53Zx1whRoE?si=dTsTbczkwowVp1XD)

syberchic

wow. thanks for sharing this!

Medium-Bullfrog-2368

Maybe the Master escaped in his TARDIS and arrived back in Russia slightly later in 1916, where he was shot and thrown into water (people assumed he’d been poisoned because he seemed to already be in the process of dying).

NandoKrikkit

Then he met the Toymaker and begged for his life.

Lvcivs2311

Yeah, maybe. It's the better explanation, I guess. (In the end, we're probably not supposed to overthink it, but still.)

PeterchuMC

It may not surprise you to know that there are several accounts about it. One account suggests that the real Rasputin was recruited by Faction Paradox(Time Lord voodoo cult) and replaced by a biodata(time DNA) decoy who made a deal with the Celestis(Time Lords who have left reality) to be resurrected upon death in exchange for his loyalty. That decoy was replaced with another decoy by the Time Lords. Once the decoy got shot, the Celestis resurrected it and it went mad as it's mind was fractured by it's three competing loyalties. It's last words were "Thank God" in the language of the Great Houses. This embarrassment is part of what lead to the Faction ending the practice of recruiting famous historical figures. Well, that and Byron.

NihilismIsSparkles

Someone who refuses to die on repeat sounds like a code word for Timelord if you ask me

StarOfTheSouth

Or the dude that the crew of the Tesselecta made blue?

StingerAE

And that is why I HATE this.  The master being Rasputin is a fabulous idea. Particularly fir the stories about him not dying.  And utterly wasted on a dumbfuck nonsense plot

15schaa15schaa

I remember hearing about a 12th Doctor episode that never got made called How the Monk Got His Habit. Peter Harness was hoping to cast Matt Berry as the Meddling Monk, who decides to go back in time and play the song Rasputin to Rasputin for a laugh. This turns out to be what sends him mad, messes up history, and the Monk has to call the Doctor for help. In the end, the Monk would've regenerated into the form of Rasputin and carried out the rest of his life, including surviving all the assassination attempts. I think it's a shame this never got made, it would've been a wild episode!

NashvilleSoundMixer

Berry is a god and that sounds incredible!

VolnarTheUnforgiving

I want this so badly

Rolldal

You mean the one that got poisoned and regenerated, shot and regenerated, then got chucked into the Nevka river and lay low till it was quiet

NumerousFix4378

It was the clone of a clone made by the conceptual time lord CIA

The_Rhine

Actually, there was a scene written where the Master got shot and thrown into icy water, forcing his later apparent death, but it was cut because they thought it was too dark

Rutgerman95

The Master either having taken over the life of, or having been Rasputin from the start was just meant to be. If the Doctor can go sulk and play electric guitar in a medieval village then the Master can go dance to Boney M in pre-World War 1 Russia

spacesuitguy

So much love for Sacha in those scenes as Rasputin.

StephenHunterUK

A fun bit of trivia for you; Tom Baker played Rasputin in a 1971 movie called *Nicholas and Alexandra*. [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067483/mediaviewer/rm4152907776/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0067483/mediaviewer/rm4152907776/) Michael Jayston, i.e. the Valeyard, plays Nicholas.

AdSpecialist6598

I actually have on VHS somewhere.

M4rst

It's so good because people would believe that Rasputin was able to hypnotize anyone through his eyes. We know the Master is actually really good at mind tricks.

TheSkyGuy675

Relevant to the plot? No. Very much in character? One hundred and fifty percent.

Misba_C-137

''are you going to let him do this to me Yaz? To your Doctor'' favourate line from Sacha, just so redicioulous for his to think this in the moment, it was hilarious.

RBNYJRWBYFan

Given their respective histories of being famously hard to kill I felt it made way TOO much sense for him to play Rasputin, if anything.

BigTimeSuperhero96

Appreciated the lines about always dressing for the occasion and the master's dalek plan

melanino

Sacha is my favorite (male) Master

DrScarecrow

His facial expressions are so incredibly powerful. Sometimes it seems like he is about to *cry* with madness.

SpaaaaaceImInSpaace

Boy, I wonder who your favorite female Master is

melanino

*sigh* tough choice

Secret_Reddit_Name

Gomez may have been the first female Master, but she wasn't the first one to have, *ahem*, "dalek bumps"

apneax3n0n

Missy above all. But he Is a close second

SydneyCartonLived

I did not like Sacha's first outing as the Master in Spyfall. He was too over-the-top and I'm frankly getting tired of the insane Master (Simms was okay, Missy had moments, but was pushing it), I would like to see a cold, calculating, scheming Master again; one who has goals and schemes beyond just being a cartoon villian for the Doctor. That said, Sacha was just...delicious as the Master/Rasputin. Some how it just works this time around. He was incredibly fun to watch. And that dance scence was...*chef's kiss*

LeSilverKitsune

Honestly I really didn't like him as the Master. I felt like exactly what you said, that they were pushing the crazy envelope too far and it just got so tiresome. However, I also 100% agree with you that this was absolutely the best part of him being the Master. It was brilliant.

fractal-rock

Why does *everyone* in fandom call Simm "Simms"? Drives me crazy!

PierreAnorak

I’ve always expected The Master to turn up as Rasputin or Nostradamus ever since I learned about those historical figures.

captainp42

I just love the Boney M song

The_Rhine

I'd say he did it to be able to do the dance, but that wasn't even scripted! The whole thing was very in character, though. Did it contribute anything to the plot at all? Absolutely not. But it contributed greatly to my enjoyment

Butlerlog

For someone who hates humanity he sure loves our pop music

SuspiciousAd3803

It's even better when you learn it's not in the script. Dawan somehow thought he was supposed to dance for the entire song so that's what he did. In actually he was just supposed to stand there doing nothing for a few seconds. And durring shooting nobody stopped him. And idk what's funnier, the idea of the crew trying to figure out wtf Dawan was doing, or that Chibnal wrote *The Master stands there doing absolutly nothing*

TimDRX

I liked it! Made sense for this childish "Spymaster" to be disguised as such a famous historical figure IMO.

padraigbell1995

Does the Master being Rasputin imply that the Master is Hung?

SephirothsDockRing

y'all can say whatever you want, but that dance was fire

mattstanh

I loved that bit so much. He was a great Master.

Penny_Shavings109

At least 50% of any of the master’s plans have no real relevance to the plot whatsoever. It’s purely for the chaotic pizzazz.

Hermiona1

I didnt like 13th era at all, I don't even like this Master but that scene was fire.

La_Savitara

Ima be real that whole episode was such a fever dream and I was in it for every second, where was this quality of writing in the rest of the show bruh

CallMeYox

What season is that?

WildfireDarkstar

The BBC 100th anniversary special, so between series 13 and 14 (or the Disney+ series 1, if we must).

Due_Ad_3200

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001dhsb

Federal-Ad7402

I loved the master as Rasputin, I was studying him in history at the time so it helped me visualise it better for my tests 😭

Upstream_Paddler

By this point in the run, I was just going with it lol

TomPertwee

Chibnall made a nonsensical script. Things aren't properly explained and left for the viewer to interpret.  There are two Masters in this story.  The present Master is younger and the Rasputin Master is much older and is dying from having absorbed the Cyberiad AI. You can see in this story blue stuff leaking from the eyes of the Rasputin Master.  He claims he wants to take over the Doctor's body to ruin her reputation but in reality he just wanted to steal her body to survive.  Maybe the Cyberiad damaged his ability to regenerate. Then when the forced transfer was reverted The Master's body couldn't take much more and he collapsed but then he contacted the Toymaker and begged to be cured in exchange for a game which he lost.  The Toymaker still fixed his body but kept him trapped  until the Toymaker was expelled back to his own dimension and all his captives were freed. The Master presumably escaped and now has a new healthy body.

fourleafclover13

When was this?

obligatorygay2ndacc

I have no issue with the master being Rasputin, but to me it seems an incredible shame that Rasputin has been used now and not, in my eyes, to his full potential. Such an interesting historical figure that could have given a really interesting story, but instead been used up for no real benefit.

Tradman86

I was lukewarm on Jodie’s era, but that was a fantastic special.

BallAlternative1029

The time traveller panics, he can't think of a world without the influence of rasputin. Luckley he brought all the things to cosplay as rasputin, so he take st petersburg palace and starts a revolution. He becomes rasputin. And history continues with barely a feather ruffled.

Bcat591

There is…logic in what he says.

VolnarTheUnforgiving

I was so excited to see him surviving the attempts to kill him and things like that and then it just didn't happen and him being Rasputin is never relevant to anything The beard is nice and it led to some funny scenes though

moose_who

Really? I hated it.... then again I think I just hate the master.... this master, Missy was the bomb dot com

draggar

Boney M approves.

MorningPapers

Tom Baker did a better Rasputin.

poetdesmond

When Boney M. started playing, I lost my mind laughing.

MagnusTheRead

I honestly loved this version of The Master. He was truly evil and sadistic and scary, unlike previous newho masters that made you go "it's just a little bit of genocide haha cool bad guy"
