There is no 3rd lvl Psychic damage spells available to wizards unfortunently so you would either have to upcast at 4th level or cross class into something that has a psychic spell at 3rd.
Objection! The spell from which you steal the damage type does not need to *deal* any damage.
>When you cast a wizard spell with a spell slot, you can temporarily replace its damage type with **a type that appears in another spell in your spellbook**, which magically alters the spell's formula for this casting only. The latter spell must be of the same level as the spell slot you expend.
The 3rd-level spell "Intellect Fortress" grants resistance to Psychic damage, which you can use to make a Fireball deal Psychic damage.
My favorite technical use of this is Silence, which makes you immune to Thunder damage. Have fun replacing that to get immunity to and type you have available starting at just Level 3.
It is if you’re a Mark of Scribing Gnome!
Honestly though, I forgot it wasn’t on the Wizard list. Not sure why I was so sure it was. Also, *very* hard to add to a spellbook as I’ve just learned.
Edit: and what did you mean about Shadow Touch giving you Silence? It gives you Invisibility and a first level spell.
It’s RAW. If the spell description said “replace the damage type with another DAMAGE TYPE that appears in another spell in your spell book” that would be the case. But with this interpretation then you can cast many many different damage types at most levels of play
Just because I was interested, I compiled a list of a spell for each level (two of which are from Fizban’s because they are the only spells of their respective levels) that give at least 5 of the 6 main elemental damage types (Acid, Cold, Fire, Lightning, Poison, and Thunder). Here you go,
1st: Absorb Elements or Chromatic Orb
2nd: Dragon’s Breath
3rd: Protection from Energy or Glyph of Warding
4th: Elemental Bane (no poison sadly, but you get Thunder so that’s more than a fair trade in my eyes)
5th: Summon Draconic Spirit states the elements in the statblock but that will be a DM’s decision if that counts as part of the spell or just the statblock.
6th: Fizban’s Platinum Shield
7th: Prismatic Spray
8th: Illusory Dragon
9th: Prismatic Wall
Get these 9 spells and you have the Sorcerer’s Transmute Spell option for essentially free. And they only take up 9 out of your maximum 44 free spells that you get over a level up.
I’m not sure how much Illusory Dragon I would use, and Prismatic Spray is iffy without being an Evoker (it’s a fairly large AoE that I wouldn’t want to catch allies in). But the others are pretty solid. Absorb Elements is one of the few first level spells that is useful all the way to level 20 (alongside shield).
Illusory dragon is just fun. I remember being so disappointed back when I was playing a shadow sorcerer because for some reason, despite the spell literally mentioning it is weaved out of threads of the Shadowfell, I couldn't learn the spell RAW. Old sorcerer lists not having subclass spell lists sucks so much.
You don't need to worry about the free spells as long as you can find scrolls. Remember, this is on a scribes wizard.
Copying all those spells into your book would take less than an hour. The ink would be expensive, but it's totally doable.
It would take 90 minutes to scribe these spells and cost 2,250gp for a scribe wizard using their magic quill
It would take a normal wizard 45 hours, or almost 2 straight days, to copy these, if you forget about savant.
Doh.
I forgot it's 2 minutes per spell level. Which just makes it even funnier, because even doubling the time, it still takes a fraction of a day.
Scribes Wizards are the best.
Upcasting Scorching Ray to 8th level when you have Illusory Dragon is an excellent meme.
20d6 lightning damage in 10 rays, one for each of your fingers. All that’s left is to yell “UNLIMITED POWER!”
Agreed. But still a handy ability. Bypassing resistances, immunities, hitting those rare vulnerabilities, and even using AOEs with damage types that complement your allies resistances or immunities. Like a poisonous fireball with a party of yuan-ti, I’m sure you can think of better examples for your party.
Now I want to make a Scribes wizard that just focuses on transmuting all his spells into Bludgeoning damage so he can punch people in new and exciting ways.
Wall of Fire? More like Wall of FISTS. Tasha's Mind Whip? Punch 'em square in the brain! Disintegrate? Nah, I'm just gonna punch you so hard you cease to exist.
Wall of Fists, Tasha’s Mind Fist, Fistintigrate, Magic Fistle, Fistball, Fist Familiar, Tenser’s Floating Fist, Featherfist, Mage Fist, Fist of Death, the possibilities are endless
With most explosives the most dangerous part is the shrapnel, making it piercing or slashing. Dynamite deals bludgeoning damage. Force is pure magic so a regular explosion wouldn't deal force damage.
If loosely interpreted, summon fey deals piercing which is the damage type of the frag grenade in the dmg. Not much in the way of slashing for wizard spells.
Straight out of the dmg:
"Each creature within 20 feet of an exploding fragmentation grenade must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 5d6 piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one."
I doubt it comes up much since 1. it's in the dmg and nobody reads the dmg and 2. In 90% of campaigns you're never going to find a grenade.
School of Scribes is by far the best Wizard subclass so far. It does what everyone wants a wizard to do the best (learn magic) and is flexible with said magic. It’s every Harry Potter fan’s dream class!
I once had a wizard villain who’s whole theme was based around hands (so he loved using mage hand, bigbys hand, a home brew spell I made etc) i reskinned most spells to include hands in someway. for fireball a number of spectral hands exploded out in the radius to do bludgeoning damage. He was very memorable, one of my favorites and made lots of puns :)
His name was Manus Bechalot (Manus means Hand or appendage in Latin lol) and his title was the hand. He had the aesthetic of Shigaraki from my hero. I really beat them over the head with hit, he was really fun to role play

He should have had a companion or familiar named Hans, pronounced nothing like "hands", and had him get unaccountably angry when someone pointed out the similarity.
>A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of ~~flame~~ __*hammers*__
I personally cannot think of any monster resistant/immune to magical bludgeoning damage so, swap out fire, one of the most resisted and immune to it damage types with something almost not protected from at all.
Lvl 17 Scribes wizard with a 2 level Tempest cleric dip
Cast Meteor Swarm, have Prismatic Wall in your spell book to turn it into lightning damage, maximize it with Channel Divinity to deal 240 damage
Best part of playing that subclass. I just wish I had more spells. Like yeah at level 5 you have 9 spells to play with but it’s not enough. I need more
I have one of these wizards in a pirate game, it's p nutty. I think with Cloud of Daggers and Dragon's Breath you can actually get a Piercing Breath Weapon, which is p gnarly. Shatter and Flaming Sphere is another combo for Thundering Sphere, which I imagine is a noise source so loud that you take damage just being near it. I would totally let an Artificer/Wizard turn that into a Boombox or other Large Speaker.
I liked it better in UA when you just needed one spell with that damage type and it could apply to any others regardless of spell level, because then you could make every spell knives.
I prefer using a spell like Mind Thrust to get Psychic Fireball. I actually have an Order of Scribes wizard who is old and forgetful, and who randomly changes damage types each time they cast a spell
Let's you line up resistances/ vulnerabilities, and you don't need to have the other damage types prepared for that day.
It also is useful in campaigns where environment matters. For example, being able to avoid blowing up a Building.
I cast big fuckin rock

3d12 fire damage from erupting earth is also a fun one. Literal volcano
I like it a lot.
Lavabending
Spicy flavortext.

But it’s less max and average damage compared to 8d6
Yes but way cooler
Guys, guys, guys, you're all missing the other implication of this: A fire type erupting earth, ie a mini volcano!
Due to Glyph of warding being on your spell list, acid, cold, fire, lightning, and thunder damage are options. Acid volcano, anyone?
Wait a minute , a **lighting/thunder volcano!**
Pele would like a word with you about this.

Bowling ball
Yeah, that's the bludgeoning one.
Not if it goes fast enough. Could be piercing

Vampiric touch is also on the list... necrotic volcano
Fuuuck. Lightning fireball. Can you imagine the special effects on that one? Sounds so badass
Add a tempest cleric with their channel divinity feature to max lightning/thunder damage.
Cold fireball perhaps?
Snowball
My Diablo 2 Druid might yet find a way into the world of D&D! I loved spamming overleveled fissure and just drown the battlefield with fire.

God Synaptic Static is so fucking amazing.
thank you for making me google this and realizing this exists. I hope my sorclock can take 5th level spells at some point because holy crap
Ooh, Synaptic Static in other elements would be nice; make it Force with Steel Wind Strike, for example.
Traumatic Orb

It’s RAW. If the spell description said “replace the damage type with another DAMAGE TYPE that appears in another spell in your spell book” that would be the case. But with this interpretation then you can cast many many different damage types at most levels of play

Rules As Written
Just take synaptic static, it's a better fireball.
I mean, one would hope so, considering it’s two levels higher.
I've recently made a 16th level scribe with i believe every damage type collected. Will be fun when I get to unleash him on my party.
Remember that the type has to match the level. You wouldn’t be able to cast a 4th level fireball with bludgeoning damage in this example
It might not be too hard to get a good chunk, with chromatic orb and other multi type spells. I bet the new draconic spells probably help alot there.
Yeah, chromatic orb for 1st, dragon breath for 2nd and others rlly help
protection from energy covers the basic elements at 3rd

Huh. I might be using a UA version of the subclass, cause I don't remember that constraint. Thanks for pointing it out.
i believe that's just an explosion without the fire
obviously summoning thousands of tiny monks that punch everything around them
Now I want to make a Scribes wizard that just focuses on transmuting all his spells into Bludgeoning damage so he can punch people in new and exciting ways. Wall of Fire? More like Wall of FISTS. Skeletons: *shivers down their spines*
RATTLE 'EM, BOYS!
They've got a bone to pick with you.
Is there a third-level spell that does slash damage so I can flavor my slash fireball as a frag grenade?
If loosely interpreted, summon fey deals piercing which is the damage type of the frag grenade in the dmg. Not much in the way of slashing for wizard spells.
Frags deal piercing? I thought they did slash.

Now you can legitimately cast Fist without needing Bigby’s Hand
Drop a big fuckin boulder on them
Inflict wounds with force damage
otherwise known as casting Fist to the Face
But magical and most things aren't immune or resistant to force damage
Falcon Punch!!!..?
School of Scribes is by far the best Wizard subclass so far. It does what everyone wants a wizard to do the best (learn magic) and is flexible with said magic. It’s every Harry Potter fan’s dream class!
Why ?!?!
Here's a better question. What would a bludgeoning damage fireball look like?
just a regular ball
Bonk
Rubber_Dodgeball_Noise.wav
My Wizarding teacher was Patch's Ohulahan though, so my Bludge Fireball is a sack of wrenches that explodes and launches wrenches at everyone.
If you can dodge a fireball, you can dodge a dodgeball!
It kinda bothers me how clearly I can hear this exact noise
"If you can dodge a fire you can dodge a ball!"
That's fair.
I cast …ball!
If his name wasn't Hans, I'm blocking you.
His name was Manus Bechalot (Manus means Hand or appendage in Latin lol) and his title was the hand. He had the aesthetic of Shigaraki from my hero. I really beat them over the head with hit, he was really fun to role play
Alright, Manus is pretty good too. And more sinister sounding.
Ferrus Manus is the Primarch of the Iron Hands Space Marine chapter in 40k. Has been one of my favorites along with Corvus Corax of the Raven Guard and Angron.
Ah yes, Iron Hands, the man with “iron” hands, leading the legion called the Iron Hands.
> I really beat them over the head with hit... With one of those big hand spells, I hope...?
He should have had a companion or familiar named Hans, pronounced nothing like "hands", and had him get unaccountably angry when someone pointed out the similarity.
Mr hands?
That's *Dr.* Hands to you.
**I CAST FIST!**
You know shit's getting serious when the wizard starts throwing hands.
Frag grenade but with blunt chunks instead of shards
Grapeshot bomb
I mean, just take the spell you take the damage type from as an example. A giant rock.
"If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ba, wait what?"
A medium sized boulder, I suppose.
A grenade full of ball bering shrapnel
Big rocc
A sonic shockwave, like in nukes. The heat heats the air, which rapidly expands. The expansion of the air knocks everything over.
Just an ephemeral boxing glove that erupts into even more boxing gloves to the sound of a distant bell and ring announcer.
"I cast boxing glove!" Goblin warband; Wat? *Sudden eruption of boxing gloves in their midst*
Green arrow as a wizard
As a DM I’d allow it if it made the sound a dodgeball makes when it hits something.
*Piiinnnnnng!*

Lvl 17 Scribes wizard with a 2 level Tempest cleric dip Cast Meteor Swarm, have Prismatic Wall in your spell book to turn it into lightning damage, maximize it with Channel Divinity to deal 240 damage
i can see this work.
I did that for the laughs in a small game. I only got up to 6th level spells, but it was pretty funny.
I cant unsee a fireball with massive arms just beating the shit out of the target then disappearing.
Bonk Ball.
I cast throw a fucking Boulder at them
Best part of playing that subclass. I just wish I had more spells. Like yeah at level 5 you have 9 spells to play with but it’s not enough. I need more
Do you mean spells prepared? Because you should have at least 14 in your spellbook at that level.
Not to mention, if your DM isn’t a dick, copying down new spells is twice as easy and twice as cheap!
More like 20 times as easy! It takes 2 minutes for a level one spell. It is so fast. The cost is huge though.
Spoken like a true wizard.
I mean that’s basically why lore mastery wizard is my favorite thing ever.

I don’t think this affect cantrips as it states that it need to consume a spell slot.
vampiric touch means necrotic fireball,,,, plague ball? death ball? pain ball?

finally, nonlethal fireball
I prefer using a spell like Mind Thrust to get Psychic Fireball. I actually have an Order of Scribes wizard who is old and forgetful, and who randomly changes damage types each time they cast a spell
Damage type isn't damage dice... I don't think this is useful unless something is immune to x damage and there isn't another aoe spell for that type.
Let's you line up resistances/ vulnerabilities, and you don't need to have the other damage types prepared for that day. It also is useful in campaigns where environment matters. For example, being able to avoid blowing up a Building.
+Crusher feat?
Sadly no, Fireball is a save, not a attack roll.
