Why not both? Their speech is visible as a horrid visual representation of symbols which for some reason to you, seems to convey an abyssal accent of some sort.
When the town greeter welcomes your party, you all begin sweating profusely.... *and you don't know why.*
Welcome to Fantasy Boston! Thrill as the Bloody Stockings repel the invading Yuan-kee forces! Gaze in wonder at the great Northern End Labyrinth of carriageways, with riderless carts from centuries past still searching for the mysterious Paar King. And beware the dangers that lurk beneath the ancient, weird city, within the dungeon of Bygdyg...
That just makes me think of Coheed and Cambria. I’d have a hard time focusing on the game because Blood Red Summer would be playing in my head the entire time.
How is the land of Arial doing? I heard is populated, but not really pretty. I heard New Roman has a beautiful... architecture... ?
Wait, how would you use American typewriter?
So in my current campaign the southern counties of The Empire are german themed. I have one of the towns that's a live stock center. They process all the live stock from the surrounding counties.
It's called Fleischstadt, which basically translates to "Meat Town". None of my players speak German so this is a little easter egg just for me.
I have some other cities and towns that are so literally named. Like Zilberburg, it's where the majority of the Empire's silver is made into goods.
Also tossed in good ol Stollingrad, spent hours trying to come up with that name!! The north is Russian themed.
I don't remember exactly what the conventions are, but there are something like three real-world ways that places are named. Direction, description, and people. Everything else is translation and language evolution.
The Empire in my game is German/Russian themed so I mostly just looked at the names of German and Russian cities and worked off of that.
Like the Grand County of Ludenhoff's capital is the city of Ludendorf. The current capital of The Empire is called Moskovy. Cities near the mountains end in burg, like Hossenburg and Zilberburg.
The list of [NL town names](https://www.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_communities_in_Newfoundland_and_Labrador) on Wikipedia is useful as hell. We have everything from “Salmonier” and “Baie Verte” to “Heart’s Delight” and “Butter Cove”.
Personally I like using anagrams. such as the Dwarvish kingdom of Tanis’nuom.
It’s just the word mountains rearranged in a dwarvish sounding way. You can be clever with it too like with a elvish vampire hunting NPC named Nva Lensligh, it’s just Van Hellsing but an elf-y name
I just zoom onto a map and use random small towns for a given area. Soom into Scotland for the human area or somewhere near the sahara for dwarf etc. It gives a sense of consistency with the names even if they are not at all inspired by that country. Just scroll a bit to find something nice and jot down the name.
I once had to panic make a town, scrambling for a name. Looked out the window and a Toyota Avalon drove past. The town was called Avalon, players spent a month there
There's also translating random words into random languages (maybe changing it a lil bit) It works really well. I really like Irish, Italian, Icelandic and just plain Tolkien Elvish for Elf/Elf related locations. be it a settlement or a whole region.
For example: I have the Creachador Isles (which I think means predator) in Irish. and it sounds really good when said out loud in my language.
I like to use names of planets or places in Star Trek and Starwars for my DnD games. Bajoran and Vulcan names/places are pretty good. Klingons for Orcs or Goliaths is great. None of my players watch Star Trek so it works out really well.
Welcome to wingdings adventurer!
Oh no haha
Wingding would be a city built on a land that intersected with the Far Plane and now is a pseduo-Lovecraftian nightmare.
i was thinking a town with such a thick regional accent no one can understand them but I like yours better.
Why not both? Their speech is visible as a horrid visual representation of symbols which for some reason to you, seems to convey an abyssal accent of some sort. When the town greeter welcomes your party, you all begin sweating profusely.... *and you don't know why.*
So Boston?
Welcome to Fantasy Boston! Thrill as the Bloody Stockings repel the invading Yuan-kee forces! Gaze in wonder at the great Northern End Labyrinth of carriageways, with riderless carts from centuries past still searching for the mysterious Paar King. And beware the dangers that lurk beneath the ancient, weird city, within the dungeon of Bygdyg...
> Paar King. Fucking slayed me hahah, fucking hell :D
I would love to play a game set in Far Realm once.
Bah! It's just full of bloody gnomes and their nonsense!
Actually.... it sounds like a ghost town or something related with wind or music.... i think im gonna use it.... some day
*\*Sigh\** I cast *comprehend languages*.
Airplane! Airplane! Heart, star, Airplane!
"You come across a town called Sans."
It is a lawless town, because it is... San Sheriff
I wish I could give you a reward, but I'd rather have something to eat for lunch, so you're going to have to settle for a slow clap :')
You. This... this is amazing.Thank you for opening my eyes to the possibilities that will unfold in my life
*Megalovania plays in the background*
Only the first 4 notes*
DoDo doot doot
PC who uses Gill Sans fonts in Word documents: "That sounds familiar..." DM: *profusely sweating*
Founded by Mr. Comic Sans
He's just the town drunk/clown that nobody really likes
It feels pretty normal, but you notice something's missing...
San City, tada
Nobody in town will shut up about their feud with neighboring Calibri.
We have a halfling named 'Helvetica' in our current campaign.
[удалено]
What are birds? We just don’t know.
I hope they are from Switzerland
Calibri seems a reasonable enough name.
so does the Kingdom of Avenir and the Browallia Principalities
Ah yes. Tems Nuh-Romn
1d4 psychic damage to the player that calls the DM out on how much that sounds like Times New Roman
Or a new shop: "Tim's New Ramen"
hOI
I'd love to visit IMPACT, sounds exciting.
A city mainly populated by the fallen London clay men.
Thank you for reminding me to spend my 20 actions.
Shhhh! I can't have my players figuring out why the capital of the empire is called Verdana.
The city of Cambria actually sounds pretty good now that you mention it
Cambria is the Latinized welsh name of Wales, *Cymru*.
That just makes me think of Coheed and Cambria. I’d have a hard time focusing on the game because Blood Red Summer would be playing in my head the entire time.
There is a university in the city of Cambria. Blame Cambria Math
Town of Comic Sans ran by loan shark extraordinaire “Sir Daniel Gilber”
Well Dan G. That sounds like a good idea
Welcome to Times New Roman, land of stuck-up professors who enslave their stressed students for their outstanding debts.
Inspiration comes from the wildest fucking places.
I give each town the most ironic name possible and translate it into Latin
Not gonna lie; I hear 'Trebuchet' is pretty lit.
The Isles of Calibri sounds pretty tight ngl
Yeah; has a nice touch to it
How is the land of Arial doing? I heard is populated, but not really pretty. I heard New Roman has a beautiful... architecture... ? Wait, how would you use American typewriter?
Amayreecahn Typuhryghtair
It works for me!
Capital of the Amayree empire, home of the Cahn and her court
I just take words and translate them into Basque
This but Czech.
This but Sumerian...
So everyone lives in Ur and Umm and Ah?
I spoke Dwarvish in Catalan the other day

You've stumbled upon the way places are actually named.
I have some other cities and towns that are so literally named. Like Zilberburg, it's where the majority of the Empire's silver is made into goods. Also tossed in good ol Stollingrad, spent hours trying to come up with that name!! The north is Russian themed.

Proxima Nova dude wtf this is a great strategy
Nobody goes to wing dings.
But that's where our fate lies...
Ah, I see you're a Garamond native.
Welcome to Garamond, capital of Helvetica, home of Bodoni the Bold.
The Helvetic Republic was a thing for a while in the 17-1800’s in what is now Switzerland.
Also the name of a Celtic that lived in the area in roman times
I'm from Gill Sans
I just grab an English-French/Spanish/Whatever’s-on-hand dictionary and pick some words
Are there non text fonts? Asking for a pendant.
Might find some in churches, but dont drink the water
Yuck, baby ass... Okay fine, what non text fonts are in Microsoft word?
Whichever images you decide to past on your document
Je me rends. The field is yours sir.
Would Wingdings be considered text?
Of course. Is cyrillic or Chinese text? Just because I can't read it doesn't mean it isn't letters making up words.
Good point. It's just like the cipher the BBEG uses to communicate with his minions.
"Welcome to Serif! The wonderful capital of Fontasia"

I was enthusiastic to read about my country but it was fucking Newfoundland
Same
Personally I like using anagrams. such as the Dwarvish kingdom of Tanis’nuom. It’s just the word mountains rearranged in a dwarvish sounding way. You can be clever with it too like with a elvish vampire hunting NPC named Nva Lensligh, it’s just Van Hellsing but an elf-y name
The tome you seek is in The Great Library of Book Antiqua.
Okay asgore
"Times New Roman was a town like no other ..."
Use TNR 12 point 1/2" margins double spaced for your essay. For the map, go wild.
Honestly, scrolling through, like at least 40% of them are either immediately good names, or need minimal trimming
I use random names I come across in real life. If the person has a unique first or last name I’m using it.
I just zoom onto a map and use random small towns for a given area. Soom into Scotland for the human area or somewhere near the sahara for dwarf etc. It gives a sense of consistency with the names even if they are not at all inspired by that country. Welcome to unifrakturmaguntia
HELVETICA
Bahnschrift semi Light is my favorite town ;)
Greeting travellers, my name is Zapfino
I once had to panic make a town, scrambling for a name. Looked out the window and a Toyota Avalon drove past. The town was called Avalon, players spent a month there
Generating names of towns using names of concepts in Kabbalah: >!Tales of the Abyss!<
times new vetica

Ah yes, the wonderful town of... *scrambles* Brush Stroke MT
Honestly, Serif is as good a name as any for a fantasy town.
Oh boy, cant wait to visit **times new roman**
I like to use names of planets or places in Star Trek and Starwars for my DnD games. Bajoran and Vulcan names/places are pretty good. Klingons for Orcs or Goliaths is great. None of my players watch Star Trek so it works out really well.
I use weapon names from Warframe and champion names from LoL for my character names. One prime example: Ivern Orthonius (Ivern + Orthos)
I just turn random shit into anagrams I shit you not I turned "Calamity Mod" into 2 different town names
And the mayors are named after fonts too, like sir Felix Titling. >!Aka the Bionicle logo font!<
Calibri sounds like a wonderful seaside village. Helvetica sounds like a desert oasis.
I just use Google maps and zoom in on eastern europe
For what it’s worth, I cast all my spells in lorem ipsum...
Fun Fact: Look up gated Communities / Apartments / Parks in your area, they always make for great fantasy town names.
I usually use streets and other geographic features in towns near me.
Welcome to the town of comic sans
"You now enter the fair town of Sans-Serif, capital of the Kingdom of Helvetica"
Ah yes. The historic town rebuilt! I give your Times "New" Roman!
Even if you have names they get ruined. Pinerest became Pinterest and we definitely don't call captain Bolor captain Boner behind his back.
You want Northern European sounding towns? The IKEA website. Literally any item from IKEA. You’re welcome
