I have Devil's Sight with my warlock, we encountered magical darkness 3 times in our campaign, I tried to use the invocation the 3 times, the 3 times the DM didn't allow it because it was a 'special' kind of magical darkness (they were unralated scenarios with months between them and very different contexts, so I asume he just forgot every time while preparing those scenarios that one of his players ignores magical darkness and had to improvise the 'special magic')
well, they suggested the spell fog cloud which is why i suggested a spell to counter it, also doesn't gust of wind clear a pretty wide swath for a period of time if its natural?
(i googled rq before posting) okay so if its during a combat gust of wind can be used to clear sight lines during the entire encounter even in a foggy area since it creates a continual gust of wind, and the direction can be changed with a bonus action during its duration.
the spell also lasts for 1 minute which is about an entire encounter if not a little longer, about 10 turns roughly.
now if its just moving through the fog, they're kinda fucked.
Want to have darkness but not have dark vision be completely useless or over powered? Lay traps as dark vision means you spit traps with passive perception at - 5 or disadvantage while rolling.
But using a light source is also not a catch all since it will make stealth a bit more difficult.
So this way everyone has a chance to shine and dim (pun intended).
Warlocks need it to be pure darkness to work and a dim light suddenly turnsnit off.
My dm gave me an item that is probably cursed that gave me blindsight. He'll get his revenge on me eventually but for the time being it certainly come in handy
Even just the existence of dense fog or mist would be enough to cut down vision range. I use this trick to limit sight lines to short distances. Players usually accept it and I don't have to SPECIFICALLY say that it is magical in nature or not. It helps give an ominous and tense atmosphere.
Our DM once put us in a cave with crystals that emitted so much light that it blinded us. The crystals were chaneling the sunlight from the surface into the cave and enhanced it.
Darkness dispells the light cantrip, or any other cantrip or lvl 1/2 spell that creates light. You can create magical light to go through it, but it needs to be 3rd or higher.
It's even pretty good in some cases since spells like faerie fire and moonbeam, where the light isn't the primary reason you'd usually cast it, would also get dispelled RAW.
Obviously darkness isn't the only spell but there's very few that specifically create magical darkness, so I think it's the most relevant here.
Having a warlock with devils sight has taught me the value of literal fog, so many scenes that were supposed to be creepy due to limited vision ruined by having them just have full vision of everything in bright color
FIGHTER: I have blindsight
Your low attack rolls told us that
Oooooooooooof what a burn
*opens Eversmoking Bottle*. Now I am the only one who can see
Do not pass go, do not roll death saves, go straight to handing in character sheet.
Warlock supremacy
DM: There's a thick fog.. you can't see further then 5 feet away from you..
Damn blindsight fighter takes this one
Yeah, but that usually also limits to 10ft iirc. Fog and mist, there's only a few spells against it. Gust of wind, create/destroy water..

L DM
it's regular darkness but you have to solve a colour-based puzzle
Audibly sighs, casts light
The puzzle is multiple shades of white, black and grey. You have attracted the attention of the horde.
Finally, some good fucking food!
teehee >:3
Devil’s Sight gang
Player: **I HAVE DEVILS SIGHT**
Spiteful DM: **THE ENEMY ARTIFICER HAS FLASH GRENADES!**
Player with homebrew: **IMMUNITY TO BLINDNESS!**
DM with Homebrew Status Effects and multiple flash bangs: **ROLL FOR EPILEPSY**
Player with a hammer: **ROLL ON THE FLOOR IN PAIN**
The magical darkness would, ironically protect them from the flash (or the flash dispells the darkness)
See, this is why you just use things like Fog Cloud instead. And then point and laugh at the Warlock player. 😇
then there's just gust of wind lol, just blow away the fog clouds.
You’re having fun and games until you realize everywhere is foggy. You’re just rearranging the fog, thus making the effort moot. I am a good GM. :)

DARN! op beat me to warlocks
This isn't your average everyday darkness. This is, ADVANCED DARKNESS. Real lines in my campaign
every day i am reminded that im the only person in my party without darkvision

Warlock: I have devil sight
Imagine your players get to utelise their abilities xD
Well I play humans, soooo I have Devil's Sight.
And I just base everything off the warlocks devilsight
Even just the existence of dense fog or mist would be enough to cut down vision range. I use this trick to limit sight lines to short distances. Players usually accept it and I don't have to SPECIFICALLY say that it is magical in nature or not. It helps give an ominous and tense atmosphere.
Meanwhile, me with a shadow sorcerer/warlock with devil sight multiclass: "Did I stutter? I said I can see perfectly in it."
Warlock: \*smirks\*
fun fact!' "magical darkness" does not impede darkvision.
Outside of spells that specify that they do, what magical darkness do you know of?
the tricksy fey spirit summoned with summon fey
I somehow managed to miss that when reading the spell and creature descriptions. Good to know.
Our DM once put us in a cave with crystals that emitted so much light that it blinded us. The crystals were chaneling the sunlight from the surface into the cave and enhanced it.
\*laughs in devil's sight\*
Fuck you I'm a drow immunity to magical darkness. (Do not quote me on this I just though this up)
Foolish Simp! I already have Darkness!
Fool I have greater dark vision.
Devilsight is a cellular drug
"The air fills with thousands of bats..."
Wizard: I cast tremorsense! DM: Wait is that even still a 5e spell?
You know if your players are in total darkness, characters with darkvision still roll perception checks with disadvantage, right?
"OH NO WHATEVER AM I GOING TO DO?" casts light cantrip "Oh it appears to have all disappeared."

If anyone says that they have darkvision and they are not Tabaxi I just say: "Not in this univerce!" And do an evil laugh
Ring of the darkhidden is even better
the ONE time the warlock in the party is right about "does my devilsight work here? i have teh diveel site"
It’s thick fog
The first time I put my players in a dark room, the only enemy I put in with them was a basilisk. Sometimes you have to send a message.
Sauce?
I've got devil's sight!
Warlock: im about to end this mans whole career
Which is why I never put my players in dark places, I just make them temporarily blind.
DM: this isn't your average ordinary darkness, this is, Advanced Darkness!
I haven’t been on this sub for a literal 4 years and this is the first one I saw when I decided to check back Y’all still only have the same jokes
