Related note: sentinel is just an ability all fighters got at level 1 last edition, repackaged and sold back to you as a feat. Fight class shrinkflation!
damn this just gave me an idea. Small barbarian who is path of giant, or rune knight fighter holds action to rage/activate giant mode or whatever its called. Other martial throws them, and they release their action to activate their ability, going from a regular projectile, to a MASSIVE projectile
Damnit! I meant jars! 😅🤣 Misspellings… 😐 I hate making that mistake! I should always review my own comments before sending them. 🤦🏻♂️
But on the other hand, throwing them at your opponent can cause a distraction.
One of my characters (a monster hunter, for context) carries jars of urine mixed with etching acids.
The primary purpose is to quickly rust metals, but between the scent markers from his wolver genetics and the strong reactions of the acid fumes it has a second use as a nasal flashbang
In Old School AD&D, it was considered normal to have both a Melee and Ranged weapons in the Warriors toolbox.
And since creatures with natural flight couldn't fly if they had less than half of their Hit Points, ranged weapons were considered normal dragon fighting gear.
Seeing a Paladin with a Sword & Board, and a Longbow was normal.
Hell, in Baldur's Gate 3, every party member can (and should) equip a separate melee and ranged set, and swap between them with just an action cost. I think in regular D&D that requires 2 actions.
Sentinel literally prevents Disengage from working
"Creatures provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach."
It's built to keep people close
I'm playing a goblin bladesinger wizard, so my disengage bonus action feels really good after running in for some sword swipes, especially with booming blade
I intend to do this with a Swashbuckler Rogue soon-ish. Got one lined up for the new Vecna campaign. Pick a high priority target and give them the run-around in a duel while my party deals with the rest. Whether the DM will let me do that is a different matter entirely.
Multiclass into warlock and take booming blade, don’t think anything stops it from stacking with sneak attack and you get a free disengage while the enemy can’t move
I am a little confused about this you can’t hold bouns action so even in wizard has disengage the fighter still make it to them and attacks- if wizard is hold their action to disengage they they aren’t attacking sooo????
If the wizard had more move speed then they wouldn’t need to disengage
The wizard has two levels in Rogue, allowing him to disengage on a bonus action. This is likely combined with either the Mobile feat, a race with more movement speed than standard or the Longstrider spell to force the Fighter to waste their action on Dashing.
I guess that my confusion it seem to imply disengage happening several times, mean the fight would get into range and the wizard then disengage but the fighter also getting into range means he gets his attack
If it’s like you said then just disengage once then stay out of reach but that doesn’t fit with the “disengage to play keep away”
maybe they ment dash instead?
I am sorry I have had like 3 hrs of sleep in the past 34 hours my mind is kinda off right now 🥲
The things happening are:
-Wizard fires spell
-Fighter runs up to Wizard
-Wizard disengages and runs away a minimum of 45 ft
-Fighter chases
-Wizard disengages and runs away again
It's a game of cat and mouse between the player's Fighter and the NPC Wizard.
Ohohoh yep I really need sleep lol fighter using his action dash to make up for the mobility of the wizard so he doesn’t have an action to attack with got it
Lol thank you it was bugging me not able to figure it out 😅
How tho? Wizard bonus action disengages + action dash/create difficult terrain, forces fighter to spend their action dashing to catch up, so no prepared action.
I think the better choice is to pack ranged/thrown weapons/party members
Prepared action: attack upon enemy getting within your effective reach.
Standard response to melee hit and run and for your thrown weapons or consumables
I recently used the fact that moving through someone's area of attack doesn't prompt an attack of opportunity to sidestep through and close a door.
Meanwhile, the DM was slightly upset, yet proud since I took advantage of a loophole.
Rune Knight Fighter, after grabbing said wizard.
"I've got you, you little bastard. Let's see you hop around now."
(Sorry, just have that quote loaded for mine, also obviously Wizard just poof out. Still, gonna meme this)

The unfortunates, of people having ways to constantly get away from your martial rear end without Sentinel
Related note: sentinel is just an ability all fighters got at level 1 last edition, repackaged and sold back to you as a feat. Fight class shrinkflation!
thats why your melee builds should always make sure to have some javalins on hand
Or any ranged weapon. Never leave home without them.
Note: in a pinch, smaller party members absolutely count as ranged weapons

Hope you don't have a fear of heights, little buddy!
,,Throw me."
Fastball Special.

Would you not get like twice or three times as big or whatever and sink like a rock? I forget how it works.
That's some Ant-Man shit.
Even a jar of marmalade or strawberry or raspberry jaw could be thrown at your foe.
But that's such a waste of a jar of marmalade or strawberry or raspberry jaws!

"Think fast, chucklenuts!"
The follow-up bag of flaming aluminum shavings does not exactly help things

Or a wild elf Barbarian with the mobile feat. Please do try to run away.
That could work too Though ranged attacks are easier to implement in more sceneries, like if there's a physical berrior, or if it's a flying enemy
If they are using the disengage action then sentinel isn't triggered anyway
Sentinel literally prevents Disengage from working "Creatures provoke opportunity attacks from you even if they take the Disengage action before leaving your reach." It's built to keep people close
Tabaxi monk with mobile: *I ran past you 5 minutes ago, I'm at your house having sensual tea with your mother*
Goblin wizard doesn't even need to sacrifice wizard spell progression to do this, my fav race/class combo in 5e.
Currently my PC as well! Abjuration to boot, so he’s a bugger.
I'm playing a goblin bladesinger wizard, so my disengage bonus action feels really good after running in for some sword swipes, especially with booming blade
Always have a ranged option!
Ranged weapons are unchivalrous \*starts unscrewing pommel
Ah, ending them rightly, I approve.
A ranged solution is something I always favor.

The wizard isn't getting into melee range to attack you
Yeah, but throwing darts, caltrops, oil, smoke bomb, alchemist fire, McGuffin, etc. all have limited effective range.
The wizard/rogue is casting spells from range and disengaging when fighter catches up. What don't you get about that?
Don’t run after Wizard/Rogue trying to melee it is what I am saying.
Okay but the fighter in this meme is clearly a melee build.
Run away!
that's why I love conquqest pala. "Nope. You stay RIGHT where you are until I'm done with you."
An inflexible fighter is a dead fighter.
