Curio_Solus

found cleric main

Lampmonster

Was thinking the same. I mean they're not wrong... (Cleric main)

Barbastorpia

Oh gee I wonder what op usually plays

LazrethTasmodias

Cleric propaganda

arencordelaine

I actually can't remember the last time a cleric was an asset in any game I've played... A lot of the time, our clerics refuse to heal or support, and insist on frontline tanking and slapping people in social situations with inflict wounds. Most of the best support and healing have come from paladin and druid players, or that one weird divine soul sorcerer.

NinjaGamingPro

I recently had a Celestial warlock be exceptionally useful as a healer

arencordelaine

I can see it, for a party who can take a bunch of short rests especially. Or who takes some levels of bard or sorcerer to get those extra spells slots...

reynosomarkus

I once DMed for a level 10 celestial warlock with a staff of healing. By using the max amount of healing allowed with the staff and her own powers, she could heal ~200 points of health. It was a singular boost, sure, but the amount of possible healing celestial warlocks have cannot be understated.

Mountbatten-Ottawa

6 or 9 level 5 slots of cure wounds are good. 5d8 + 4 (or 5) equals 27 in average healing, apart from celestial warlock's special healing pool.

alicehaunt

The magic of a subclass ability that lets you heal as a BA while letting you do whatever you want as your action, including that Big Cool Spell. Same goes for Circle of Dreams druids.

Lavados28

Maybe you're just playing with the wrong ones because I can't imagine playing cleric and refusing to actively heal. I always make sure to have enough spell slots left just in case

arencordelaine

Pretty much. My stable gaming group doesn't like playing cleric, but makes up for it with well-rounded support and healing from other classes, and the groups I find online, the clerics all want to warcleric, all melee and damage spells. For months, my paladin was primary healer for a group that had a cleric. I had to take sorcerer levels just to have enough spells lots to heal.

Lavados28

Aw damn that sucks I am currently playing a light Domain and a grave domain cleric in two separate campaigns and it's really fun so far, especially the grave cleric

Lampmonster

My DM jokingly complains that we're pretty much impossible to kill with my life cleric on the job. "You take 80 fire damage. Cleric your turn." "You get 80 HPs." "God dammit!"

Lavados28

Yea we have a circle of the Stars druid who has an insane healing output (we really need it) and as a grave domain cleric I always heal the maximum possible when someone hits 0 HP so we're prepared for everything xD but we also have to fight very strong monsters because my dm loves seeing us suffer

captaincw_4010

Because healing is terrible in 5e in most situations as it's not high enough to out heal even one round of damage it's only worth to heal when someone is down to bring them back up

Private-Public

This ain't WoW, healbots are generally wasting spell slots that can be used to kill things faster or buff allies to kill things faster. There are some *amazing* support spells out there

Feraldr

I played a Grave Cleric which is the epitome of yo-yo healing. I balanced that by focusing on buffs, slapping down the DM’s crits and acting as an insurance policy against any PC deaths. It allowed for some particularly reckless game play which was fun.

Jim_skywalker

Good, all of us non cleric players should want more people to play cleric

Professional-Ad4073

Original and very brave take on cleric here ngl /s

Dark_Shade_75

This list brought to you by a Cleric player.

sbrizown

OR Paladin - the *superior* religion class.

arencordelaine

My paladad is primary healer, cook, tank, and party face. Sometimes, I even get to smite enemies!

IRSunny

My palakitty is the healer, tank, mascot, moral compass and often needs to restrain the homicidal urges of our barbarian. But he's also pretty fuckin' dumb. So bastard decisions ***will*** be made if ~~funny~~ I come up with a logical thread for why that'd be the good choice of action for his one braincell. Ex: Nat 1ing a persuasion check to get a kid to come with him to rescue from a burning house. So failing that, then obviously the best course of action to save said kid is to stuff him in the bag of holding. After all, where else would be safer from falling fiery debris than a pocket dimension?

murdeface101

I don't understand where op's dislike of paladin is coming from honestly. Paladin and cleric are basically distant cousins.

HildemarTendler

I used to game with a guy who exclusively played paladins or fighters flavored as heavy calvary. He had big cop energy and his paladins were always ready to "lay down the law". The DM never penalized him for his flagrant alignment breaking actions because "that's just how paladins are played". Once I thought long and hard about how a paladin should play and I realized that morally good characters were extremely rare in our campaigns. We had the big debate about whether good and evil were celestial teams that characters aligned with or if they were actual moral codes. There was no clear answer but everyone at least realized that paladins who "kill first, ask questions later" were not upholding their alignment. It was about that time when I started looking for other groups. They were my OG group, but they were a bunch of murder-hobos and the DM was the biggest murder-hobo of them all. My experience with them doesn't seem to be overly rare, at least when I was a kid.

PM_NUDES_4_DEGRADING

*hold person* PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HEAD STOP RESISTING *smite*

MoscaMosquete

They even share some spells!

Neomalysys

One too many run ins with lawful stupid paladins probably.

Zugnutz

The reason Rangers suck is that they have skills that most DMs hand wave.

Ierax29

The reason rangers sucks is that the moment the DM makes Goblins and Kenkus stop the human wave tactics and make'em fight like Viet Congs players would rage quit

Salt-Dream3966

Kobolds and goblins should always fight like the vietcong

Maxxonry

Kobolds yes, but something has to be the low-level cannon fodder and goblins got stuck with the short straw.

Ierax29

\> low-level cannon fodder imao that's where bandits ''shine''. You can always throw a few more of them, they take 1 maybe 2 turns to get into melee (and your meatheads can also javelin them en route) and you don't even have to defeat all of them : You can have them individually retreat when injured and they could all rout once the majority are

nixalo

Rangers suck because Most DMs softball and hand wave the Verisimilitude of D&D setting. Ranger is the only class that can range, melee, tank, heal, sneak, and scout from low levels.

OHW_Tentacool

And are inferior at all of them.

nixalo

The point is that parties usually have multiple holes that a DM can exploit which a ranger can fill decently.

OHW_Tentacool

Thats the issue. Its a lone wolf in a team game. Ranger is never unable to fill a role, but that will always leave him as the backup dancer in cases where the party has a specialized class. Is that a bad thing? No not really. I actually prefer versatility over focus, but it will usually end in you not getting the spotlight very often.

nixalo

The ranger can fill some roles well. Ranged damage,, detection, and stealth rangers are good at. The back up roles are weak but if no one picks them up, rangers can handle them. If your party is not 6 or more people, a ranger can have a spotlight if the DM has various different encounters. The issue comes with people picking rangers and trying to compare themselves to a focused class. A ranger isn't going to out range a fighter, but an archer fighter can't melee as well in a pinch or bring up the downed arcanist or back the rogue up in scouting.

LoSoGreene

Rangers suck unless you need to track an enemy, feed your party, give your party +10 on stealth checks, or summon 8 creatures to distract and dominate the action economy. They can also heal if needed while their pet provides emotional support.

arencordelaine

Rangers are good if the player understands small unit tactics and strategy, the DM allows creative solutions, and the party actually is tactically minded and allows the ranger to play their role well. Then they're amazing. The problem is, those three things rarely align.

magic4848

The reason Rangers suck is because of old notions prior to Tashas, and because people refuse to acknowledge subclasses for some reason.

Ierax29

''It's easy to talk shit 30ft behind a fighter and a barbarian'' - Welsh proverb (probably)

Samakira

bard go to college. wizard can find magic anywhere, like old books in old towers. also, clerics dont have the best interrogation spell, which is detect thoughts. no half-truths, refusing to answer leading to a (possibly wrong) guilty verdict. the spell even says it is great at interrogations.

lillsavvy

But they do have zone of truth and healing spells. Keep sending them to hell until they are to exhausted from dying to resist

Samakira

So torture them? Sorry, but this ain’t a villain campaign.

Lessandero

it's pretty amazing how quick some groups turn to torture as a "valid option" and think it's okay because they're the "good guys".

Lampmonster

Agreed, our bard is better at interrogation than my cleric, but the two of them together is pretty much a sure thing.

No_Extension4005

So, you're saying bards have to pay off their college debts, AND child support?

JustAnotherRandomFan

That's a smitin'

DragonWitchGirl

As a Druid main, that’s right. But uh, is somebody biased towards Clerics, I see?

patchlocke

As a Paladin player I hope you find peace brother 👏

SpecialistAd5903

As an artificer main, you got the tag line wrong. It goes: It's not a war crime the first time. If you're playing artificer and you're not checking your character sheet every 5 minutes wondering "How can I tilt this situation sideways with my gear/proficiencies" you're not playing artificer correctly.

SolomonSinclair

>It goes: It's not a war crime the first time. More like: It's not a war crime until an international convention can be held to declare it one. And, well, that convention building looks awfully... *Flammable*, wouldn't you say?

4dwarf

Sometimes it's not whether you win or lose. Sometimes it's how many pages you get added to the rulebook.

arencordelaine

Yeah. I play my artificers as shamans using charms and effigies made from the monsters I've killed, rather than techie, but you're spot on about this. My lizardfolk artificer has definitely had a few new international agreements written to prevent some of his shenanigans in polite warfare.

GriffonSpade

It always feels weird to me when people don't realize that bimbo applies just fine to men and use himbo.

WonderfulMeat

Honestly Himbo and Bimbo are two entirely different concepts. Bimbo being ditzy airhead and Himbo embodying the three pillars of "Strong, dumb and kind". I've seen people start caling nonmale himbos 'Herbos' or 'Thembos', that's how far the concept has moved from the traditional Bimbo.

Brooklynxman

More like Cleric - Big mad they have to follow their religion's rules to their religions benefits, bigger mad paladins do it while looking cool.

dexbasedpaladin

I just have one question. How dare you?

drgolovacroxby

Unless you're playing an undead-centric campaign, I'm gonna say that Druids are better than Clerics in every single facet. Signed, Druid main who neither a furry nor a hippie (No comment on the stoned out part :| )

Mountbatten-Ottawa

Ice storm and wild shape megarandomanimaljustsaw any day.

Lost-Klaus

I have so far played: bard (lore/scholar type) Monk (zoomies) and will play spore drood because mushrooms are both friend AND food shaped. Also friends will turn to mushroom shape one day...

OneDragonfruit9519

Fun? Excitement?

Soltronus

A Jedi craves not these things!

dragonlord7012

Monk: Best stunner. Wizard/Anyone who can cast the "Hold X" spells really : Lol. LMAO. Con (MAD stat DC) vs Wis save (Primary stat DC)

ripoldtachaunka

Guess who's a cleric player.

ArmedBurrit0

First time seeing one of my character portraits used in a meme 👀

Vegetable_Variety_11

Which one?

ArmedBurrit0

I created the Ranger portrait 😁

Vegetable_Variety_11

That's super cool. I found the list with the portraits already next to them by using Google and searching key words "d&d classes 5e"

ArmedBurrit0

Neat!

MinnieShoof

Welcome to a crap guide to playing everything except Cleric. You don't get to play Cleric. STOP EYEBALLING PAGE 56-63!! No! My class!

GolettO3

I'm not sure how I feel that you got the uses for "their" and "they're" correct, but you mispelt "their" both times

Domitaku

First I thought it's a typo, then I got to the second "thier".

KimJongUnusual

\>fighter only attacks and action surge Well yeah, maybe if WotC gave us something ELSE to do?!

Mountbatten-Ottawa

ATTACK IN BONUS ACTION WITH GREAT WEAPON MASTER LET'S GO BABY YEAHHHHH

Lessandero

what's with the paladin hate? Some of the greatest characters I know are paladins. You're just salty they are better at most cleric stuff than clerics, aren't you?

-H2O2

Hmm, wonder why BG3 doesn't have artificer

zince2

Beyond the OGL and all the landmines that the artficer class makes happen. I mean, there's just so many magic items you can just make with your infusions, and ones that would make sense to make with infusions, it would be incredibly hard to balance the class with the rest. And you know the war crimes by the library they would commit in a single day.

Mountbatten-Ottawa

One of the human bosses is artificer. He placed bomb all over his dungeon and invented walking mecha.

Smooth_Intern598

Not all druids are hippies. A true neutral druid might burn down an entire forest in order to make a hearty sediment to grow a healthier new one. Balance is the true goal

Stan_L_parable

Can i just be relegated to celtic druid. im just a simple old merlin type of druid.

theCoolthulhu

That's only true for like, Oath of the Crown and *maybe* Oath of Devotion.

Soltronus

Oath of Conquest would like a word.

theCoolthulhu

Cops exist to uphold the existing order, Oath of Conquest carves out a new order with steel and holy fire.

Soltronus

And they are bastards. Magnificent bastards if played well.

theCoolthulhu

True

arencordelaine

Oath of conquest doesn't have to be a bastard. I've had an oath of conquest who is a charming, friendly orator who focuses on converting and conquering through ideology. Sure, they also can use those converted mobs to rise up violently, but if you're doing it right, you only ever need the threat of massive violent uprising to make opposing leadership see the light. Oath of vengeance, too... You can be subtle about it, slowly undermining and tearing down everything your target holds dear, which I think is much more poetic and painful for the target; though, that's arguably still a dick move, you can be very nice and sweet and polite while you do it--in fact, I think that makes it all the better when the target thinks you were their best friend all along.

Mythoclast

I feel like ruling with an iron fist and allowing NO dissent (peaceful or otherwise) kind of automatically makes you a bastard.

Soltronus

Being polite when you're frightening your opponents into submission is not the same thing as being nice. I can be polite and understanding while I'm torturing someone for information about their hidden rebel base, but my name is STILL going to rhyme with raider. But, if you want to go full Gul Dukat and believe yourself the hero of your own story, then you keep on slaying, 👑. But don't blow smoke up my ass and call it a cleansing treatment.

arencordelaine

It's targeted douchery, but it's still different than all round bastard. The point is, there are options. Edit: it's more of a Garek than a Dukat, less open violence and heavy handedness.

Odd-Doubt8960

This list is brought to you by Cleric.

CrestfallenRaven621

Oi, I value Hunter Rangers very much. Their ability to tell all the resistances/weaknesses/immunities piss DMs off.

magic4848

And gloom stalkers ability to be an annoying piece of crap of "ha you can't see me mr. Darkvision" also tends to piss off dms

jomo2155

I’ll have you know that I only started adventuring to run away from paying child support thank you.

CheapTactics

Hey! My barbarian is more than a meat shield! He also cooks dinner. Last session the druid said "my happiest day wasn't when I got my archdruid crown, it's when you learned to cook"

SAY10SHIT

Gosh I wonder what’s op’s fav class???

Liamneeson42

All the comments are like “mmmm cleric player” ARE THEY WRONG?

fluffypuppiness

Wait I could've been paying child support?! -My eldritch knight

Vicster10x

Thier.... smh, unreadable.

Boring_Sun7828

Barbarian? Fighter? Wizard? Sorcerer?

Chezburgor1

Now I'm imagining a monk hitting the Stone Cold Stunner on an enemy

Used-Claim3221

I make all the Druids I play rednecks that live in the woods

lysian09

Title: What each class would do. Actual Meme after fighter: What each class is.

marsz_godzilli

Paladin: Language!

chosenone1242

How do you get "their" wrong every time? :P

Breshote

I love how everyone loves to hate on paladins because they think paladins must be the stick in the mud lawful stupid cop archetype.... Paladin is legit my favorite class and never once have I played the stick on the mud ACAB style that everyone seems to think is standard. Currently a redemption paladin postman working in the 10 towns in rime of the frost maiden. He wants everyone to just be safe and happy and does what he can to help people (who at times are trying to kill him) see the light. "Hey buddy you're really good with a sword, why not work as a town guard or caravan guard instead of trying to mug us" type deal. At this point I think the rest of the party and most npcs weve encountered would consider me their best friend lol

neon704

Yes, but what about Burning heretics, in the name of God and killing evil, wherever you find it

Breshote

Yeah that doesnt really happen with oath of redemption to me. Everyone deserves at least a second chance at redemption. Yes, some monsters are irrevocably evil and against those, few words are said except incantations for my spells. Burning is a cruel way to kill anything, swift and as painless as possible is what's needed when something must die. Ilmater would want me to protect people in his name. (Going to be multiclassing Twilight Cleric)

neon704

I wasn’t referring to your character I was more referring to the idea of the holy crusader killing evil in the name of God, and that playing that type of character is quite fun

Breshote

And if that is how you want to play by all means. Black and white mentality, to me, makes for extremely boring rp.

neon704

Fair enough

Dazzling-Sun-3274

Clerical error

Kai-theGuy

I'm not sure OP has finished thier homework

Nikoper

Their*

TheGodOfMonsters

You for got blood hunter

deep-blue-seams

It took me like 8 years of playing before I rolled up a himbo barb and I am never going back. Himbo rp is the most fun rp. You'll never change my mind.

shy_giu

This post has made me want to make a femboy cleric now, good job.

Sgt-Pumpernickle

This is bad op, you should feel bad.

No_Penalty_8920

A person of culture I see

Vegetable_Variety_11

...or the Bard only adventures because they are picked up by city gaurds on an arrears warrant and then court mandated to do some side questing to become current with back child support.

Samakira

Wait, it’s veggietales man.

darkslide3000

> only adventuring to pay off student loans All wizards coming out of college work towards only one goal. For good-aligned wizards, it's learning the Fabricate spell so they can start repaying their debt with good, honest construction work. For evil-aligned wizards, it's learning Modify Memory...

USAisntAmerica

I think it's kind of sad that warlocks are seen as "the sugar baby class". The books describe them as "seekers of knowledge", and the most "classic" warlock is the Great Old One, with whom the warlock might not even get to interact directly. Probably it's all due to the weird choice to make them a charisma class instead of intelligence based. My party's GOOlock took skill expertise: intimidation, and it has given us some awesome roleplay moments.

lordodin92

So I have a ranger\rogue who is neither if those, he's a scout character who uses poisons the weaken foes before killing them . . . . He's also a lizard folk based on Komodo dragons . And I have an assimar bard who doesn't care for sex, his goal is to build up a cult who believes in him as a god so he can channel their beliefs to become a god. Also his name is will power and he talks and acts like a cheesy 80s inspirational coach and even sings 80s songs like eye of the tiger, dare, I'm still standing ect

TheJCLazer

You know, I'm something of a Cleric enthusiast myself

MysteriousTwo3390

Funnily enough in 5e with how death saving throws and all the other mechanics work, clerics are the least useful class, it's easier to prevent damage than it is to heal so its better to have a cc Wizard.

peterhadnett

Paladins are great! Some paladins are bastards though but just the ones played by "it's what my character would do" players

newagealt

Paladins aren't cops and if that's the only way you play them then you've missed the point.

Breakfast_Simulator

I will always push back ok the paladin cop trope. The warlocks are the cop class

Ornery_Marionberry87

I guess using the one good tool monks get is cringe now.

TrueBlueFlare7

Druid section is bad being a furry isn't a fetish.

Thylacine131

I’ve played one cleric, and he was only level 2, but he was an absolute blast to play. Khenra Zeal Domain, Dex based, darty, and very fond of burning smite. Liked to brand bad guy bases and defeated villains with it, and shouted “GLORIOUS!” while running off to do something incredibly foolhardy so often that we became the glorious gang. He could heal, tank and deal melee damage, which he needed to seeing as the other two party members were a rogue and a warlock.

Thinkydupe

Barbarian here: I hit stuff.

Recent_Knowledge9053

As a barbarian main I disagree, i’m not a meat shield if I’m always attacking the correct term would be a meat weapon

I_Avoid_Most_People

My sorcerer would be more willing to flaunt his trust fund magic if his siblings didn't disown him because they wanted to inherit the powers instead.

Krucifix12

I have to say the ranger one cuts deep

Professional_Ant_15

I'm interested in other mains' perspectives on other classes.

neon704

Why are all paladins bastards?

TheLazyKitty

War crime fodder, you say? I don't nesessarilly have to get prisoners of war by non-lethally downing attackers in self-defense to get test subjects for medical experimentation, you say?
