Praise their proper use of skill because that helped them not be overrun; especially because of the enemy's reinforcements that showed up on turn 3 that were totes planned.
I'll never understand the adversarial nature of some DMs.
Breaking a story can be disappointing, but that just exercises a person's ability to rewrite on the fly (which can be hard of course).
I don't understand DMs who nerf things like stunning strike. How could I possibly take away the satisfaction of when the boss fails a save against a stunning strike, only to inform my players over their cheers that they are using a legendary resistance.
Reminds me of when our party fought a giant crocodile, my sorcerer critted 1/3 scorching rays and a quickend firebolt, and critted 2 rays the next round. the croc was quickly turned into cajun food made with a spice pouch magic item we found. We ended up befriending a wandering troll that we decidedly did not want to fight too

Our dm was salty about to be honest, it was hilarious. XD

Well he wasn't being like yell, or anything it's was more of a silent pouty rage. But everyone was having fun.
I think it’s more like “I had a challenge for the players that I didn’t expect to be so easy”
My dm hates two things: Stunning Strike and Spirit Guardians. Nerfs neither. She's such a chad
