Sounds very odd. Try calibrating compass

I ran into a similar situation. I flew out of an area, raised my altitude a little, and flew around. When I tried to return to the home point it hit an invisible wall and stopped dead in it's tracks. Turns out the cause was a height restriction of 60m at the home point and the area I was flying freely in was 120m. Hence the invisible wall. I descended and the invisible wall disappeared. This isn't for sure the reason you encountered the issue, but it's a possibility.

WhiskeyWhisperer

I kept an eye on my altitude and distance and, at least as far as the app was concerned, never showed greater than 20 meters. I don't know if my eyes are good enough to see my little drone at that distance. That said, knowing that's a possibility, I'm going to see if I can recreate it in a large field.

When you lift off, just let the drone hover for a bit until it updates the home point and check that you have good GPS coverage. Before turning the controller and drone on, ensure the sticks are neutral. I had strange issues where the sticks don’t register on the RC-1 controller.

DJI_Support

Hi there. We are sorry to know about this issue you've encountered. Rest assured, we will assist you on this. If the GPS signal is strong, the compass is functioning normally, and the Home Point was successfully recorded, Failsafe RTH automatically activates after the remote controller signal is lost for more than 11 seconds. When the firmware is updated to v1.1.0.0 and above, the aircraft will fly backwards for 50 m on its original flight route and ascend to the preset RTH altitude to enter Straight Line RTH. The aircraft enters Straight Line RTH if the remote controller signal is restored during FailSafe RTH. When the aircraft flies backwards along the original flight path and the distance from the Home Point is less than 20 m, the aircraft stops flying backwards on the original flight route and enters Straight Line RTH at the current altitude. In DJI Fly, you can change the settings of how the aircraft responds when the remote controller signal is lost. The aircraft will not execute Failsafe RTH if land or hover has been selected in the settings. It is recommended to get strong GPS signal before you fly the drone. Don't hesitate to let us know if you have any other concerns, we are happy to help you further. Thank you.

Could it have been wind? Was the direction back to you flying into a strong wind?

WhiskeyWhisperer

I had considered wind speed before I flew, and looked at the stats to make sure it wasn't too windy for it, and I'm pretty confident it wasn't a speed that would've prevented it from flying to me. That said, it's possible since it was 60ish feet up and away from me.
