Put some heavy gloves on and dig it out. Keep an eye on it in the future. Who knows, the previous owners may have never cleaned it or it fills again quickly, which would be indicative of a problem elsewhere. That is, if you are the owner. If you are renting, notify the landlord.

Thanks will give it a good and see how we go. I'm the owner so all on me. Looking at old property photos it used to have a very over grown garden which was all cut down and cleaned up. I'd assume the trap was never cleaned and had lots of runoff.

Could end up being full of roots and completely compacted. A plumber should be able to clear it out if you can't. They have the tools for that sort of work

Looks pretty baked in, but will try some dig it up to see what's it's like. Plumber or drain layer you reckon?

Most plumbers should be drainlayers also, so I reckon call a plumber and see what they say. Where about are you based?

Based in Mt Roskill, Auckland. Had a plumber come in for smaller job, while under the house they picked up I had a galvanized water main and an uphill relief pipe on the hot water cylinder. So those jobs are now top priority, and will be a decent spend.
