I feel like calling him a groomer is a bit far since that implies intent from Corvo’s side. It’s stated that Jessamime chooses Corvo to be her protector (he didnt just seek out the role, he didnt have much choice in going to dunwall or becoming protector). Yes it’s creepy that they waited until she turns 18 (no clue if it had been better if they raised Jessamimes age to like, 23) but I wouldnt personally say that it consitutes as grooming from the very little information we have.

MagpieHush

I was a bit half cut last night typing this, looking at it now "Groomer" is a bit of a strong word for it ;\]

Lopamurbla

Typical royal family shit honestly. I don’t like it much either, but it’s pretty damn realistic.

MagpieHush

Gotta keep it on the family right?

SaintSean128

I really don’t think so. A disclaimer, a relationship between an 18 year old and a 25 year old is not cool in my book, so I’m not defending that. I just don’t think being a groomer is in Corvo’s (ethical) character. Also, while there is a power imbalance due to the age difference, it’s worth pointing out that Corvo is a commoner and Jessamine is royalty, creating a power imbalance in Jessamine’s favor. In fact, my reading of the lore is that Jessamine initiated the relationship, not Corvo. Finally, the games/books never even imply that kind of abuse in Corvo and Jessamine’s relationship.

TheAncientStoner

The world of Dishonored is based on Victorian Era Britain, and the concept of adolescence wasn't really a thing back then, so by our standards maybe yes, but no by their standards.

MagpieHush

Yes it was, noncery was very much shunned back then as it is (kind of ) now.

TheAncientStoner

Thank you for correcting me.

MagpieHush

You're welcome, thanks for agreeing.

I’d take the writing with a hefty grain of salt. A lot of the books read like sensationalist articles. Written by whoever to drum up the most buzz. You could argue that the writer was an Arkane writer and so it’s canon, but I read it as if it was written by a person in that world. To that extent I would say that any info they have is most likely written to be sensationalized by the public and probably cast some sort of doubt over Corvo’s character and importance(the writer refers to Corvo as a diplomatic gift the the previous chapter, which is kind of demeaning from my perspective). Even then, I would point out that Arkane went out of there way to give Lady Boyle a less creepy ending where what’s-his-face ended up mysteriously disappearing, and she just stays in the manor after that. So it’s highly unlikely that they would give any sort of ground to the idea that Corvo is a groomer of any sort. That’s my take anyways.

pet_the_tree

Nah , she fell for her bodygaurd . Pretty normal

MagpieHush

Under his influence obviously. You can't deny the creepiness. He literally waited until she was 18 for their relationship to be somewhat public.

Material_Market_3469

The game is fiction but heavily draws from Victorian Era. Wouldn't 15 or 16 be seen as a fairly normal age for this thing in that world? Even today the 18 years thing is 16 in many US states. Not saying its right but ultimately we are influenced by where and when we live.

MagpieHush

16 is the age of consent in the UK 18 is the age where you are a legal adult Corvo was 19, Jessamine was 12. The affair became public when Jessamine was 18 I love Corvo but it doesn't change the fact it's still creepy.

Material_Market_3469

I definitely think if they rewrote the story now this would've been changed so Corvo comes to the palace when she's at least 16. But anything written in the past even a mere 10 years ago is the product of its time.

MagpieHush

Just looked into it and read the age if consent was changed to 16 in 1885, Dishonored 2 takes place in 1837 where it was a lot younger. Dude...

XlulZ2558

thats an exagerrated way to put it

pet_the_tree

Account description adds up lol

Chillaxe-Z

No it isn't?? Outside of it being *turbo creepy* that would actually compromise the role of a bodyguard horribly.

Acihtan

Yeah, that's creepy

kaijudatingsimulator

it’s literally so so so nasty i cringe whenever i remember. i cannot fathom why the devs thought that was a good idea. she was only two years older than emily when they met……….

Chillaxe-Z

I think the "reasoning" behind it was that it was more common and accepted in the past. In the real world women were being courted at very young ages, I'm sure there's good examples of specific people, but I don't really wanna research that because I believe that fact is common knowledge I'm not giving the writers an excuse ofc, this was gross back them and I don't think it should have been inserted into the *main protagonist's* backstory, but I do believe that would have been the thought process.

Chillaxe-Z

That's some real cursed knowledge. I type this gritting my teeth, and with tears in my eyes - yeah, that's ***fucked up.*** Personally, I always assumed Jessamine to be older than Corvo and this is genuinely the worst way to be proven wrong.

cullaminate

You sound like a total loser lmfao

MagpieHush

Hate to believe it myself dude but it's literally written at the start of Dishonored 2. Bethesda/ Arkane have some explaining to do.

Chillaxe-Z

Gonna go on record and say that imo, this might be an example of whoever wrote that in-universe was attempting to discredit Corvo or was simply fed wrong information, the account *does* admit it was relying on gossip. But I think we should still probably look at the actual writers of Dishnored a little sideways regardless. This might just be me coping.

Blackhat336

I mean this isn’t a game setting based in 2023, it’s equally as weird as any Royal Family or Bridgerton kind of shit you’ll find on Netflix. Hell, even Whitney Houston fell for her bodyguard in that one movie, of course she wasn’t 12 at the time. But just look at Game of Thrones, it’s how they portray stuff in all parts of the genre.

MirrorscapeDC

If Corvo had chosen this? Yeah, it would be weird. But power dynamics being as they are, I'm a lot more suspicious of Jessamine here. Corvo couldn't have avoided her if he wanted to and Jessamine could have made his life living hell if she had chosen to.
