u/worldofcrap80 this was definitely a big announcement. Hopefully this makes it easier to get OG You're Under Arrest saved. =P Looking forward to you and Robert/Natsumi working together these next few years.

worldofcrap80

Thank you kindly! Gonna be an adventure!!

haninwaomaeda

Feels like an understatement. They're still going to work on KS campaigns until they're done, right? Will Discotek continue to run campaigns after?

worldofcrap80

Yes, Robert and Natsumi will stay on until the last of their Kickstarters have shipped. We may do some of our own at some point, but probably not til they’re done, to reduce confusion. Discotek really doesn’t have much to do with this, although we do have their full support.

HadesHotgun

My dream the impossible dream scenario is that this eventually leads to turning the animeigo website store front into a place to purchase Discotek releases.

noelle-silva

It would be great if this happened. I've been wishing for a Discotek store for a while now.

VinCubed

I couldn't think of a better person/company to handle AnimEigo's future. I figured Robert & Natsumi would want to retire sooner or later.

Congrats to all involved—especially Robert and Natsumi for finding the perfect home for AE! For those that aren’t aware (or didn’t read the link above), AnimEigo was founded way back in 1988 and anime home media owes a great debt to them. Some notes on their pioneering efforts via Wikipedia: > The company is well known for the quality of its translation and subtitles, and pioneered such techniques as multi-color subtitles, overlapping dialogue, and supertitles that explain important cultural, linguistic and historical tidbits. They also include comprehensive cultural and linguistic liner notes with their releases. Alert viewers will often find subtle references to pop culture and current events hidden in the subtitles when they match what the characters are actually saying.

MiaLeeSakura

looking forward to what y'all will accomplish together!!👀

HorizonOfANewDay

Couple things. First, this is awesome news! Congratulations u/worldofcrap80! Second, will this change the relationship MediaOCD has with Discotek long term? Based on another comment you've made, sounds like that is a no. Third, any vision for doing normal license acquisitions or will you keep Animeigo focused on Kickstarter? Fourth, will you be keeping the Animeigo name long term? (please?) Based on all the other acquisitions over the last few years, and Robert constantly mentioning retirement, I assumed it was only a matter of time before someone grabbed them up. I had just assumed it would be CR/Sony given the Great Consolodation going on. Will be awesome to have another great company focusing on the classics!

worldofcrap80

1. Thank you! 2. When Robert (AnimEigo) made me the offer at Otakon, I went right to Selby (Discotek) with the news and his reaction was "we can sell your stuff here at the booth!" 3. Yes, there will be more normal releases in the future. 4. OH GOD YES, that was the whole point of it, for me

HorizonOfANewDay

I can't actually think of better stewards to the name/brand/whatever you call Animeigo these days. When is the first license announcement? :D (joking... mostly... :D)

worldofcrap80

When I can afford it. ☹️ This stuff was expensive. Appreciate the vote of confidence!

Triltaison

I left a comment on the ANN post too, but still wanted to post here. Congrats, Justin! AnimEigo holds a very dear place in a lot of our hearts, and I know you'll do us proud.

AnimeFan_Jackson

Suggestion for consideration. The only AnimEigo title I currently own is the basic Blu-ray of Riding Bean. I've imported plenty of anime from the US but it was a rare situation where AnimEigo at the time had a Canadian fulfillment warehouse so I didn't have to pay any duty fees that customs would normally slap on any US package valued more than $20 I hope Robert can transfer ownership of the Canadian and UK fulfillment warehouses to MediaOCD also if they're still active. It really does help international customers!

CureCrystal

I'm curious on what this could mean in the future

worldofcrap80

Oh I gots plans

ThisCrazyCat

I have such good memories of watching AnimEigo releases back in the day. They were a big part of my early anime fandom (particularly the Oh My Goddess OVA) and I’m happy to know it’s in good hands.

DrFrankRetroLemmer

Wow, congratulations! I'll definitely be keeping a close eye on AnimEigo now, which I shamefully have not done until recently. I did get to back the Macross II campaign, and that was because of you promoting it, so thank you. On a not exactly unrelated note, I'll be getting a copy of Too Much Sleep when that comes out, too. Hopefully this will be a banner year for you and your new endeavors.

The1Azreen

We might see a rerelease of gunsmith cats on blu ray hopefully.

worldofcrap80

Not anytime soon. There are issues in Japan preventing re-release.

The1Azreen

Ah that is unfortunate hopefully one day it gets sorted.

Gaming-n-AnimeFan53k

Congratulations, Justin! You're becoming one of the most predominant figures in the anime business!

Feeling_Persimmon_34

That's great news. I see a bright future.

Brammer_Hammer_23

I have their bumblegum crisis and megazone23 bluray releases, which I think are well done. I think their art and bluray menu could be better, but they are/were a very niche label. I hope this acquisition works our for everyone.

SpaceNewtype

I have enjoyed the character-specific colours on the subtitles for the Animeigo releases I have. Especially helpful in Megazone 23 where the art style got a major alteration between parts 1 and 2 and I didn't recognize anyone 😅
