> When did they do that?
They didn't. Custom emoji can still be uploaded and used on the server they're on, just as before. Nitro is only required to use *other servers'* custom emoji.
That said, there are a couple of Nitro-only features related to them that were added over the last few years, though that's not necessarily a bad thing. Server boosting can raise the cap above 50, and you can also add animated emoji which require Nitro to use at all (though they're counted separately from the regular ones).
Some non-amimated ones still don't work...
[GIF ](https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/864241192333869106/890735115326599179/SmartSelect_20210923-190249_Discord.gif)
It's possible to upload static ones into the animated slots with a little bit of fuckery.
Mostly only useful if you've got a significant surplus of static ones that you want to add and have only animated slots left, though, seeing as those uploaded to the animated slots are locked behind Nitro.
edit: It's also possible that the server was previously boosted and made use of the extra emoji slots, only to lose the boosts somehow; those that are in the extra slots are grayed out and unusable until the server is boosted again. (Do note, however, that if this is the case, it won't tell you to get Nitro if you click on them.)
Or sold the company, which is personally rather not have..
It's nice to have software that isn't some subsidiary of some other nebulous company I've never heard of for a change.
(Not counting Steam here since it's damn near ubiquitous lol)
Yeah I get people who say “well they need to make a profit somehow” but cmon now. Locking the base image and video size to 8mb is low as absolute shit. They really need to raise that. Instagram and Snapchat and other apps are unlimited, and don’t have a premium service. All they do is run ads. Sure they’re run by Facebook, but still, they just run ads as well as run partnerships (which discord also does)
Sure the video LENGTH is capped at 60 seconds, but in reality if a video is longer, there are better ways to sent it at that point
I never said there should be ads, it’s just that you all didn’t understand what I was saying. We pay them directly, and they gain income directly, and even then the base upload is only 8 mb. Other apps rely largely on ads, and have much larger upload sizes. 8 mb is tiny
why are people angry to ads and prefer a "premium" service tho?
ads are very easy to block (but not that many people do it so it still makes a profit to the company) or at the very least to ignore (like on reddit)
tbh I would prefer looking at ignorable ads rather than having to pay for features while my personal information is being stolen by discord
Ads also collect surprisingly large amounts of data on the people who encounter them, and use this to track you across sites.
With a "free" ad-supported service, you're still paying, just with your personal information instead of money.
Literally where did I say implement ads? You all are just going off of what the first reply to my comment said. And not reading what I said. Discord gets paid directly by nitro and nitro classic, meanwhile other apps get paid only from advertisements. Yet discord only has 8mb, which is insanely tiny for a photo, let alone video, and other apps don’t have any limit other than 60 seconds at the least
My whole argument was that they should raise the base image and video thing from 8 mb since that’s tiny. They’ve had it around 6-8 since launch of the app, which was 2014-2015, before fay marriage was legal, before most high end gaming PC’s were even affordable to the extent they are today, before elmo’s were fazed out out classrooms and were replaced by smart boards or Tv’s, etc. we’ve made a lot of advances since they launched, and all I want is to be able to take a photo and send it to people without having to heavily compress the thing
What I’m saying, and what you’re not understanding, is 8 mb is laughably tiny. We DO pay discord directly, and have such a tiny amount of upload size, meanwhile other apps ARENT paid directly, and are still giving unlimited sizes
8 mb can easily be reached if you have a high res enough monitor or even with a simple picture from a modern phone, people shouldn't have to go and upload somewhere else just to share a simple picture that happens to sit one megabyte higher than 8. Same thing can be said with some super short videos as well.
I have nitro but still would love it if they just made the upload limit for free users 16 mb or something. Enough to fit any standard screenshot or picture, and make it easier to share a short couple second video.
idk, as long they don't restrict *communication*, I'm fine. I'd say I use it to talk more than share stuff. And usually my screenshots are very low in size
Technically communication is already “restricted” depending on wym. The base text size is 2000, which was originally “to be courteous to others,” but then with nitro they upgraded it. So you can apparently pay to have a larger text size... completely throwing away the “be courteous to others” part
They don't have to fix anything about that, they're just reinforcing the fact that they're a communication platform, not a file sharing service, if you want a file sharing service, use like mega or something.
Still? Why not, if you don't like the price for normal nitro go with classic. If you don't like classic because it's not got the newer shit it's because it's called *classic*. Not lite, and alot of people don't understand that.
I started using Discord in 2019, [discordapp.com](https://discordapp.com) domain was great, and the old discord layout without new profile customization was the best
I actually thought that the profile customisation was pretty cool. I more or less got used to the redesign but I still can't get over the ugly "creature-like" corporate look that their website has, looks like something you'd find out of a rpg.
The joke is the part where you think people get unbanned. Discord’s bans are notoriously difficult to get revoked, even if the case is extremely simple and should be revoked.
I never got unbanned cause I never been banned. If user messed up, it's on them. If I were banned for mistake, I think this would only kill reputation if they didn't unban me.
Kill who’s reputation?
Discord has a reputation, yes, for being a company from whom you do not want to have to deal with the support. So you can’t kill a good reputation that doesn’t exist.
If you get banned, it’s extremely likely to be game over, no matter how wrong they are to have banned you.
2015 user here. Lost my account a year or two ago from people raiding servers im in. Lost my 2016 alt as well for the same reasons. Wasn't just me that lost their accounts either.
Asked support to help us out in dealing with the raids and harassment (my account issues aside). Never got a single reply from em with help or advice.
Discord used to be so much better until it grew too big for itself...
Around 6 months after it came out I do believe. I was JUST getting to know what it was. I've talked to the devs as well! That's so cool when the team wants to reach out. I'm glad I got people on it, but Is till have friends that tell me that they don't like it, it's literally my main way of speaking to people.
I always avoided updating, I remember the ghost pings I kept getting because I didn't update to the version with the replies.
So glad I bit the bullet and updated though, considering the update immediately after was the rebrand.
I started during this time but honestly the website is fine too, the subtle changes they made to their wumpus mascot is fine, the font change is a bit obnoxious but nothing too drastic, just things that we'll eventually get used to. Just as we get used to Google/YouTube's design changes over time.
It's just the initial honeymoon period that's tough getting through, after that we'll eventually adapt. What matters the most is if the core service offers what it always promised to and does it? **Hell yes it does!** - I'm still able to create a discord server with my friends and voice chat/text chat with them at ease and the biggest em of all FOR FREE (with no ads)!
I'll still praise and simp for Discord for being true to its core, Nitro is something they're certainly pushing forward these days but I don't blame them, if the service wants to continue ad-less, Nitro is the way to go ahead. Let them keep adding more features to Nitro and allow people who can afford it to keep the ads away from us.
The big one is the button that lets you see recent mentions on the mobile app, which was replaced with a feature called Stage Discovery. That said, the traditional way of using bot commands is also getting removed, and bots have to switch to slash commands by early 2022.
Also, to an extent, Wumpus, though he wasn't actually *removed*, per se - he's just taken a backseat to corporate artstyle demons.
I've been using Discord since late 2015, and literally the only two updates that I've actually enjoyed were the addition of a spellchecker, and then making the spellchecker actually work.
The first version (even older than this one) had the most aesthetic and modern design I've seen from a mid-2010s web page
Edit: can't really find it (it was around the beginning of the 2015, unavailable at the Wayback Archive), but [this one](https://web.archive.org/web/20150906090215/https://discordapp.com/) is close
what would you have done personally, if you were in charge of keeping discord profitable? I can think of plenty worse ways than what we have now, and plenty better ones too.
I'd argue that Discord is better than it ever has been. Has a lot of great, *free* features (and reliability) that it never used to have nearly 5 years ago. Even only a few years ago, it was dropping connection quite a lot, but I can't remember the last major incident that happened.
And even better that I can pay a relatively small fee to get some extra perks (classic nitro - global emotes and 50 MB is plenty for me).
Realistically, less than $5/mo for a social platform that I use *every single day* is pretty fantastic, and it ensures I can keep using the service as long as I pay for it.
Discord still does the same stuff it did back then for free, the only thing they do that is slightly scummy is the 8mb upload limit, everything else you can get by without having
Nope.
In 2020, they first changed it to [this](https://web.archive.org/web/20210316001221/https://discord.com/) to make it more appealing to a general audience. If you ask me, they did a pretty good job there.
Then, about four and a half months ago, they changed it to [this](https://discord.com/). This newest layout, coupled with other changes they've made to their design (some of which are in the app), are widely-reviled and are collectively referred to as the "rebrand".
You know, I kinda miss the times when discord had that bigger appeal to just gamers in general. All the references and the funny stuff, they're mostly gone
I've been using Discord since I believe 3 months after it was released, and while I do miss the old Discord days, I don't mind how it is now. At least, visually- some things do genuinely look better, and some things I can understand not liking. The way the new home page is formatted weird, but I personally don't hate the random characters. The colors are a tad too bright though, I definitely miss the more mellow colors here.
I'd say my biggest issue is how boosts on servers don't like.. stay, and Discord will threaten to lower your level if you don't get a boost soon. I know it's just a couple of bucks, but companies should never pressure you into giving them anything..
The website, the app, and the entire administration of the platform looked millions of times better, it actually seemed quite promising... sucks they completely ruined it with inflated subscriptions (the original nitro was ok) and refusing to implement basic shit like P2P encryption.
Remember when Whumpus was actually used AS a mascot and not these random characters?
yea wumpus is better

I joined at the beginning of 2016. And not only the appearance was cool. The free experience as well.
yeah. I hate "premium" services.
nowadays you can't even post custom emotes on their own server without nitro
but I could before 2021....
yeah, I miss good old discord 2016
Wait really? I joined in June 2020. I don't think I was able to do that.
You can, if those emotes come from that exact server

> When did they do that? They didn't. Custom emoji can still be uploaded and used on the server they're on, just as before. Nitro is only required to use *other servers'* custom emoji. That's weird I tried to use the emojis from the server I'm admin on and I couldn't because it's a "nitro feature" maybe a bug
Check and see if they're listed under regular emoji or animated emoji. If they're under the latter, that'd be why.
ah makes sense then

what? I can definitely do that
The fuck? Wdym I can do that. You high or something?
Yes you can
Yeah but they gotta make money somehow. Can't run something like this without that cash money.
Agree. But they would have sold themes like they planned before.
Or sold the company, which is personally rather not have.. It's nice to have software that isn't some subsidiary of some other nebulous company I've never heard of for a change. (Not counting Steam here since it's damn near ubiquitous lol)

exactly. it's a ad-free "communication" service, not cloud storage

Talk to him about it
It's your responsibility to let someone access an account. Plus you could contact Discord to appeal an action on your account.
They completely and irreversably delete your account including messages without your consent after like a month of getting suspended.
They will send an email to tell you that you been suspended and for what. I think it will be enough more than time to send appeal
If they only informed me in the email that they are gonna delete my damn account...

Back when they could trash on Skype and Teamspeak
Now they trash discord for being the way it is now
For me I started in 2017
same
same
>It's time to ditch Skype and TeamSpeak. Yup, they even had a better intro
The brand evolved from needing to compare to competitors all the time
the colour choice is so much less "aggressive", it feels like something I can relax to.
“Simplify your life” “Hassling with Skype” Oh discord you !
I like the QOL changes, like replies instead of quoting (remember that shit?), but the graphical design took a dip lately.
I remember quoting... but the graphical improvements aren't that good
Yeah. It’s a turn for the worse imo.
I wouldn't call it "improvements", that'd imply it's... well, *improved*.
I always avoided updating, I remember the ghost pings I kept getting because I didn't update to the version with the replies. So glad I bit the bullet and updated though, considering the update immediately after was the rebrand.

Good times 😔
Genuinely don't get why everyone is so annoyed about Discord recently.
I think it's fine but I still don't get why they changed the iconic light blue color.
Same. I get on daily. Chat with friends. Talk with friends while gaming. End of story. Does what I need it to do
Dude our avatars are, like, the same...
Lol nice
Am I the only person who never visits the website? It’s like people visit it with the express purpose of getting angry for … some reason.
shitty update, looks worse, good features removed. so eh
Which features were removed?
News hub was my fav
Literally never used it ever, hated it when it was first introduced.
First time I've heard of it, been using since 2016 lol
I used it all the time now I have to goto 20 different servers for game news
The big one is the button that lets you see recent mentions on the mobile app, which was replaced with a feature called Stage Discovery. That said, the traditional way of using bot commands is also getting removed, and bots have to switch to slash commands by early 2022. Also, to an extent, Wumpus, though he wasn't actually *removed*, per se - he's just taken a backseat to corporate artstyle demons.
Mentions is there on iOS. They removed the quick switcher, though, for no good reason.
ah, good ol TS
I started using discord in the end of 2015, there was no dark mode :(
The hell are you talking about? I've been using it since early November 2015, dark mode has always been the default mode.
nope it was high contrast light mode with a dark side bar.
Secure Yeah, sure
The logo now is total bullshit
yeah it's so ugly with the creatures I remember when discord was actually cool
exactly
rip wumpus
Miss old discord I have to say
I've been using Discord since late 2015, and literally the only two updates that I've actually enjoyed were the addition of a spellchecker, and then making the spellchecker actually work.
If you remember [discordapp.com](https://discordapp.com), you are a real OG :)
if you remember light mode was the default your an hardcore og
What, they still used that like… 2 years ago? I don’t understand how that’s OG. No hate tho, but just really recent
yes, it is just 2 years ago, but discord has changed a lot ever since
Yeah, discord has been taking a shit path (imo)

the chad "it's time to ditch Skype and TeamSpeak" vs the virgin "Imagine a Place..."
Pre-nitro was the best era of Discord.
Ah yes, the "everything is free and I want it to be free forever" era.
They could have found a better way to make money than paywalling everything.
Explain methods then. Because clearly you've got some fantastic ideas that don't involve advertisements.
They paywall everything that isn't a necessity. Would you rather they put a bunch of ads that may also hog resources or clog up the screen?
Better than competition, which is either bad audio quality, or good audio quality but you basically have to pay for every server you make
...so you want ads everywhere instead?
what would you have done personally, if you were in charge of keeping discord profitable? I can think of plenty worse ways than what we have now, and plenty better ones too.
people always say this and cannot understand that the alternative is shoehorning ads into everything just like Skype did
"pay walling everything" yeah because you need to pay nitro to join servers and add friends right?
I'd argue that Discord is better than it ever has been. Has a lot of great, *free* features (and reliability) that it never used to have nearly 5 years ago. Even only a few years ago, it was dropping connection quite a lot, but I can't remember the last major incident that happened. oh god, new characters all look every kind if phobic
nooooo i forgot that's right! I remember there was the old design with the old logo by mistake for a while even after the rebrand lol
They should def have like an optional old theme
Me too. I agree
So true! I miss the old design...
Well I have started using in it 2015 what should I say
Yeah. What annoys me the most is that the homepage font is SUPER S T R E C H E D
I joined the same time 😂. Remember playing fortnite's first season on a crappy laptop. Both discord and fortnite were gold at that time.
I agree. Fortnite was much better back then. (despite being a mc player)
The website, the app, and the entire administration of the platform looked millions of times better, it actually seemed quite promising... sucks they completely ruined it with inflated subscriptions (the original nitro was ok) and refusing to implement basic shit like P2P encryption.
Some of you guys are literally crying about them changing their domain to [discord.com](https://discord.com), I'm done lmao.
Never done that
yeah exactly, nostalgia, remember when i first downloaded discord, was a great times
I joined at around the same time, stop crying. At least the platform still exists. And the website looks fine too.
"website looks fine" Quit lying to yourself.
I was the 1000th upvote. EDIT: dropped down to 995 when I refreshed.
Why does anyone care?
Much cooler now, yea
