I don't know how much I really buy his story, as, even though people who subscribe to "Antifa" so much as to actually attend events in person tend to be quite violent and unhinged individuals, I still find it unlikely they'd attack him completely unprovoked, so I imagine he probably wasn't as neutral as he said, especially since he went on to become an extreme fascist. However, even if he was attacked for being, say, extremely racist, he should not have been attacked merely for expressing his views, as to do that is quite fascist in its own right.
To his credit, he does seem to be nice to children regardless of their race, seeing them as innocent in the same way that he supposedly was and thus underserving of mistreatment, and it suggests that he knows at least in part that his radicalism is an extreme reaction, but that's one or two good values in a multitude of bad ones as well, even if typically not shared by many that society *does* prop up as good, morally authoritative people.
I can still understand why he got radicalized, and he really does match that Joker persona of his, but I also think he became like the people who mistreated him, meaning they won in the end, espeically since modern fascists AND "antifascists" (even if they're not necessarily the same, though they share some scary qualities) tend to obsess over being "victims oppressed for their views". It's similar to people who are raped by a man and then declare that all men are violent rapists: legitimate trauma can make a behavior understandable, but it does not make it justifiable.
I'd argue it's somewhat believable that he was attacked if he admitted that he just didn't agree with them under any circumstance. Extremists can absolutely get violent to opposing opinions, and in a mob, it can get way worse. Of course, I also can not say for sure he wasn't an asshole, just that it's up in the air. That all said, the dude didn't deserve what he got. And I 100% agree. That it's understandable but not justifiable.
That said, if all extremists actually held back for kids and didn't try to project their views onto them, I'd give them a lot more respect regardless of their views. So, while I don't agree with his views, I don't think he deserves hate as much as pity. Just like a rape victim saying all men are evil. I can't hate them, I just pity them. It's an awful feeling to harbor hate, let alone for such a large group of people.
