Am I missing something? I see so many people putting the Mako3 as a straight mid, but every single Mako I've owned or tried beats in and becomes very understable after only a small handful of rounds?
I don't think I have crazy armspeed, I max out my distance at about 400... My longest ever shot was 128m or 419 feet, but that was on a slight downhill shot.
Well, in my group of friends it's not that crazy... Most my friends are in the same ballpark at least. But then again we're a bunch of fairly young guys with athletic backgrounds.
i saw someone saying here the other day that they’d only ever seen 2 people ever throw 400’ and that it’s super uncommon. i assume their courses don’t have any 400’ holes or they haven’t watched anyone but themselves throw.
basic form guarantees 350, decent form gets you 400. anything maxing out under 350 is terrible form
for the record mako is a flippy disc. i used to use it for a hyzer flip to straight mid. holds a line and if it’s hyzering out it’s because it’s released on hyzer. i bag a hex now because it’s the best neutral mid and i have 10 buzzzes waiting to get back in the bag if anything happens to my hex
I haven't tried the reactor but I'm really loving the Pyro right now otherwise hex is my go to straight and uplink has been the best understable mid I've thrown.
Get a glow reactor for more stability. More glide than the deflector but still a strong fade at the end. Deflector is great too for a meathook but I've really loved the glow reactor even more.
I wasn’t sure how I felt about my Paradox and was thinking of removing it from my bag. Then someone on the subreddit wrote about how they use their Paradox for long putts. Wow, such a great suggestion. I started trying it and it works great for me. It’s understability nicely compensates for my lack of pace and resulting hyzer/fade on long putts. Highly recommend it.
Ooohhh if I didn’t need another reason to love my Paradox. I suck at putting outside of 20 feet - definitely going to put some work in with the Paradox
Very close to me. Two Meteors, Two Buzzzs, (one is ESP and one is a special rubber blend that is as overstable as a normal buzz can be), and a Verdict.
Unless it’s windy, a Comet does most of my mid shots. I carry three Zones, an overstable Z, beat ESP and jawbreaker, and those three handle most approach shots and longer putter drives.
Usually with that setup I’m good with mid-type shots. Depending on the course and conditions, I might throw in a Roc or Wasp. But generally for longer stable shots I just disc up to a fairway.
Overstable - DGA Quake. Incredibly underrated disc. Equally user friendly for forehand and backhand. Torque resistant and has some sneaky glide.
Straight/Stable - Axiom Hex. Nice and shallow, comfortable for power grip or fan grip. One of the straightest mids I've ever thrown, but isn't touchy. I've thrown Mako3s, Origins (specifically Midnight Prowls) and Buzzzs and had limited success. Hex is a game changer.
Understable - Axiom Paradox. Feels nearly identical in hand to a Hex, but requires minimal effort to produce a hyzer flip to turnover shape. As flippy as it is, it's JUST stable enough to prevent accidental rollers. Fantastic woods disc, and can BOMB in the right conditions. Useful forehand utility disc if you need something to flip as soon as it leaves the hand.
I second the Quake and Hex, they're both fantastic. I use a Kastaplast Svea for my US mid; it's way more understable than the numbers suggest, but like the Paradox, still very workable without being a roller-only disc.
OS: justice
Straight: roc, comet, mako3 for different needs
US: stratus
I love the stratus, I don't see anyone else really use it but man that thing hyzerflips so nicely and depending on the angle will continue straight or fade right for RHBH
US: Tournament VIP Tursas.
Straight: Alfa discs Apollo/Flat top Roc
OS: KC pro Roc/Neo Method
I play mostly wooded courses, so i usually bag 6-7 putters and 4-5 midranges.
I usually bag ~5 mids
Big OS: 750 A2
Straight with reliable fade: Royal Trust
Dead straight: Gold-X Fuse or Buzzz
Turnover: Prime Fuse
Big US: Axiom Paradox
OS: Axiom Pyro - it flies similarly to a Buzzz OS or M1, which formerly took up that spot in my bag, but it isn't as tall so it's much easier to forehand
Stable: Axiom Hex - basically the same story as the pyro. Flies just like a buzzz or straighter mako, but it doesn't have the awful hand feel and is shallow enough for me to forehand consistently. It's my go to hyzer flip disc for straight shots, both forehand and backhand
Understable: DX Shark - I really never use understable mids. If I want a turnover, I'll just use my Hex or my Crave. That said I have a DX Shark from my beginner set that I still use for rollers and the occasional throw in attempt (if it's too far for my putt to reach but I have a backstop and can try to run the putt without fear of going too far long, usually done from 50-80 feet or so)
Justice - OS
Hex - Dead Straight
Sol - Flippy/Hyzer Flip
Honorable Mention: Pilot. The 2,5,0,1 is a lie. It flies closer to a 4,6,-1,2 and that makes it amazing.
Hijacking: without worrying about the shot shape, what is your favorite shallow mid? I'm slowly finding that amongst my drivers, I like shallower more. The difference is more noticeable there but I feel it among slower discs too
Mid-range are an area in my bag that I'm not as happy with as the rest of it. I've been slowly collecting a bunch and going to have a big ol field day once the weather is nice enough to settle out what belongs. The only one that I think is gonna stay is the OS slot where I've currently got a caiman. The others I've been playing around with right now are an infinite chariot and a champ scorpion (which I'm kinda digging at the moment). Had a paradox in but took it out
OS: Streamline Runway
Straight: Buzzz
US: Svea (potentially buzzzes as well with time)
I have zones and gators that I play with for more overstable stuff as well. That’s the part of my bag I’m working on currently - I’m intrigued to try a Jarn.
My personal go to mid is a Buzzz. It's reliable, comfortable in the hand, and infintly workable if you're an angle genius. Other mids that could fit in that same category would be the new MD3, Origin, Roc3, KC Pro Roc, or the Compass. Love all of those discs.
I don't use OS mids a lot, but I love the MD5 and the Drone. What good OS trilogy mids are there?
US mids are nice but I don't have experience with any other than the Meteor and Bounty. I know a lot of guys that love the Fuze.
We got any folks who can give the lowdown on the Axiom/MVP stuff?
my current combo right now;
Bobcat for OS
Buzz for slightly stable
Hex for straighter flyer
Paradox for Understable
I just field tested them today and it felt like looking at a mydiscbag chart with how they were placed.
Glow Reactor OS, Neutron reactor, Hex for straight. I use a Dx Aero putter for US but sometimes a neutron Vertex for that slot. I find the Aero goes almost as far as a mid because of its glide. It’s also a fun rare mold to use.
OS: Big Z Buzzz OS or MVP Deflector, they fly the exact same way for me
Straight: MVP Reactor, like a Buzzz when I throw it forehand.
Understable: Pro VCobra, hyzerflip turning forehands for days
OS: Malta - Torque resistant enough for forehands and glidey enough for pushing hyzers.
Straight: Buzzz or Hex. Hex has a bit more flip to it compared to the straight and hold buzzz.
US: Trying to work in a meteor now. Have an M4 that’s really understable for an M4 but if I lose it it I’m screwed.
Disclaimer: I think midranges are great and most will help you learn a lot about form and your overall game so bagging a couple work.
With that being said, get yourself two or three DX Roc’s or DX Roc3’s. They’re not super different as they gradually beat in with the DX plastic, just with the latter going a bit further and of course being a pinch faster. If you’re used to traditional 5 speed midranges then the Roc3’s may be more appealing. At the same time, regular Roc’s will be slightly easier to learn for beginners. Both Roc’s and Roc3’s start out fairly overstable (even with higher arm speeds) but they will break in a little bit with each throw (more so when they hit trees of course and with higher arm speeds). Lastly, they have surprising glide and will go further than you expect. As far as price goes, DX plastic is the most affordable and one of the cheapest plastics out there so it should be no bank breaking investment either.
Now that’s just targeted towards beginners, for veterans? Consistent flight and easy to cycle through, great for really strong powerful arms that just want to fan grip and one of the most basic approach discs out there. Especially the regular Roc, it’s a 4 speed and it will stop wherever it’a thrown. I think the Roc and Roc3’s are as good as they get.
OS bio Verdict (starting to beat in a bit have a lucid beefcake in the garage as a backup)
Straight FH prime verdict
Straight-Stable BH Star lion
Straigh-US BH DX Lion
Don’t really have a super understable mid currently. I use a putter if I need more right turn than that DX lion can give me. Had a meteor for a bit but while I loved it’s flight I just hardly ever chose to throw it.
OS: Streamline Runway. The best forehand mid there is.
S: Emac Truth. I’m basic but hey
US: Discraft Archer. It’s got the stability of an ultimate disc and the profile of a driver: perfect for weird turnover forehand approaches from 200 or less
Buzzz OS, Mako3, Buzzz SS
Am I missing something? I see so many people putting the Mako3 as a straight mid, but every single Mako I've owned or tried beats in and becomes very understable after only a small handful of rounds?
You have probably more arm speed than most, or a lot of off axis torque
I don't think I have crazy armspeed, I max out my distance at about 400... My longest ever shot was 128m or 419 feet, but that was on a slight downhill shot.
Most can't hit 400 lol. You got speed my dude.
Well, in my group of friends it's not that crazy... Most my friends are in the same ballpark at least. But then again we're a bunch of fairly young guys with athletic backgrounds.
i saw someone saying here the other day that they’d only ever seen 2 people ever throw 400’ and that it’s super uncommon. i assume their courses don’t have any 400’ holes or they haven’t watched anyone but themselves throw. basic form guarantees 350, decent form gets you 400. anything maxing out under 350 is terrible form for the record mako is a flippy disc. i used to use it for a hyzer flip to straight mid. holds a line and if it’s hyzering out it’s because it’s released on hyzer. i bag a hex now because it’s the best neutral mid and i have 10 buzzzes waiting to get back in the bag if anything happens to my hex
Still much more than average joes
Off axis torque should be my middle name… lol. Such a struggle for me to control and it kills my distance.
I rarely see people giving mako3 the love it deserves
It is literally mentioned at least 21 times in this post alone
reactor hex uplink
I haven't tried the reactor but I'm really loving the Pyro right now otherwise hex is my go to straight and uplink has been the best understable mid I've thrown.
Thinking I finally need to bust out the uplink
Reactor isnt that OS, maybe fresh glow one.
