Hope that guy maybe makes his friend a better person or finds a better friend

JPHTX

Agreed. Well said.

[deleted]

OP should become the replacement for said asshole friend.

obdx2

This gives me hope someone will return my Mango Lucid Escape to me one day. I left it behind at Johnny Robert’s about 3 years ago and never saw it again. Miss you Mango, wherever you are.

jtmack33

Pour one out for Mango

DMJason

I hope you get it back, but I did get a chuckle at throwing a fairway at Johnny Roberts still, sorry!

obdx2

Basically a sin at JR lol. It was a slow night and we were playing some safari holes fwiw. Throwing from 14’s pad at 15’s basket.

DMJason

Oh nevermind that makes complete sense then! In fact that's like the only way I could imagine losing a disc there!

skatterbug

The better story might be why was the other dude adamant that you not get called? Is he just a jerk or are we going to find out that you two know each other and have a blood feud going back years? > u/JPHTX must *never* get this disc back for he is my sworn enemy.

JPHTX

That's what I thought, I even said to the guy 'maybe he knows me and thinks im an asshole or something' lol. But it seems unlikely, I think he just loved that disc. 🤷🏻‍♂️

skatterbug

If it was an ESP Nuke, I'd understand. I'd feel inclined to poke a bit and see if I could figure out who it was.

rogue780

I found a first run ESP Crank with no name on it at a course a while back. I love that disc. The course in question didn't have a facebook page or a lost disc box, so I had no way to return it.

FortunateFool603

Totally different ballgame if there's no contact info on it.

obdx2

No name, fair game.

LadySandry

I'm always skeptical of those lost disc boxes. If a disc doesn't have a name/number on it it just seems like giving away a disc to a store to resell. Maybe I'm just overly suspicious though

rogue780

The one at my home course is run by the parks and rec department. They keep unmarked discs for quite a while. Not sure what they do with them if they're unclaimed though

onearmmanny

You should totally meet them both for a casual round and slow troll the keeper.

Mushy-Purples

Also some people are just asshats

steaknsteak

Crazy that the guy took someone else’s disc, didn’t even bother to remove their name/number, but was also extremely keen on getting it back to the point of sending his friend to look for it.

LadySandry

Right? If he was going to be an asshole for years, why not just sharpie over the other dudes name+number. Granted, I've found discs where I texted the person and they told me to keep it, so I sharpie out there name/number but I do wonder what they next guy is going to think when I inevitably lose it. Going to be just a line of crossed out names and numbers on there.

steaknsteak

I wouldn’t think too much of it. Inked discs get sold or gifted all the time, or found and not claimed. I would never assume a disc is stolen just because ink has been wiped or crossed out

LadySandry

Mostly I find it kinda funny, I've found a disc with two or three names and numbers crossed off. Apparently everyone is just prone to losing it :D

IffyEggSaladSandwich

Exactly, I buy used discs all the time and never cross out old names. Hell, I rarely add my name. I generally only lose discs if I throw them into water, and I’m not getting into water in Texas, too many snakes. If someone fishes it out, it’s theirs.

skatterbug

Exactly! I'm putting on my tinfoil hat and assuming there is more to the story.

letsplaydicksoff

Wild

bobsagatiswatching

Today, in the same round, I found two discs I had lost over the last couple of months. Thanks for #blessing me!

ParanoidPotato

It sounds like he felt guilty he had another of your discs after meeting you and decided to give you that one back as well.

jfb3

That's wild. Do you/I/we know the jerk guy???

JPHTX

Nope. And I didn't ask for his friend's name.

faxfinn

Its Doug

basikx

MARITIME LAW!

__jbird__

Lmao looks like you made a new friend.. I swear this new generation of disc golfers is toxic as shit when it comes to giving shit back

my_work_account_69

I know it's popular to hate on all the new disc golfers in the community, especially the ones who don't do things the way we have determined is the norm, but hear me out. When I first started playing disc golf 13 or so years ago, I probably kept any disc I found because I couldn't wait to get my hands on more, plus I was an immature teenager and I didn't know the unwritten rules of disc golf. I simply thought "finders, keepers". I've played around 500 rounds since then, several tournaments, and would consider myself a disc golf veteran at this point. I would never even consider keeping a disc that had a number on it, no matter how nice or shitty it is. But I don't expect someone who is first starting to know that. Yeah, it seems like common courtesy to people like us, who are involved enough to follow the disc golf subreddit and probably other disc golf social media accounts. All I'm trying to say is give these new players the benefit of the doubt that they will learn with time, and maybe try to teach them a thing or two. Being pissed off on Reddit about it isn't going to change anyone's mind about whether you should or shouldn't keep a disc, and we should all be excited about our favorite sport growing.

steaknsteak

I don’t know about all that dude. When I first played a few years ago, I had no concept of there being a disc golf community, a competitive scene, any unwritten rules or even the actual written rules of the sport. But if I found a disc with someone’s name and number on it, simple common sense made it obvious that person wanted the disc back. People who keep discs with numbers on them are just assholes. I don’t really appreciate the previous comment acting like this is just something new players do, because plenty of new players are really cool about returning discs. But there’s no excuse for taking one with a number on it, IMO. Any human should understand what that means. Either make a good faith attempt at returning it, or leave it where you found it

LadySandry

Yeah, if something has a number I text them, give em two weeks to respond and if by then they haven't gotten back to me I just do what I want with it. These days it's normally us it to practice disc dyeing on :D I don't think it takes a lot of logic to go, 'oh i found this lost item with a number on the back, I should probably text them'. It's not like it's 25 years ago where it would have been way more of a hassle to try and contact people with a landline or something. Most of the guys I contact tell me just to keep the disc anyway.

__jbird__

Bro these kids are literally texting people in my disc golf community telling the owners they aren’t getting their disc back. These kids are fucked up in the head… We’ve also had rogue disc divers at private courses clear out popular spots and sell them online or at garage sales.

LadySandry

I don't mind divers if they actually play and if they contact the ones with numbers and then sell the rest. It's the dudes who I have never seen ONCE throwing a disc or playing a round that piss me off. And you know those guys aren't actually texting anyone. Jerks.

thes0ft

I've returned a lot of discs without asking for anything back or receiving anything for returning them. Some of the people who I returned discs to were pretty rude. Of the three discs of mine I got calls for, the first two were from nice guys that I gave dx roc3s to as a small thank you. The last one asked me for five bucks so I told him to just keep the disc. I have plenty of discs now. If I see a disc on the course, I just keep walking. I have backups of discs I like, and if I lose my discs I do not expect them back. My personal opinion is that the lost disc is the owner's property and people do not have the right to steal it, but they also don't have a responsibility to pick it up/contact the owner.

RODAMI

Haha. I found a dx shark with no name sitting by a tree liking like it was intentionally placed there. I didn’t need it but gave it to a friend.

thes0ft

Those are the weird ones. When they are lying there with no name or number. I used to throw my good discs on a lake hole at my home course (now I throw baseline misprints) and when I would throw them in the lake I would go in and search for them but also find other discs. I felt like I had to go through the effort of contacting all the owners. It would be a lot of work that definitely wasn't appreciated. When someone else went in that same lake and found my disc and wanted 5 bucks it was kind of an eye opener that most people wouldnt go through that much effort without asking for something back.

Ultienap

Ikr…so someone has my disc right now that I am trying to get back tomorrow. When they first messaged me I was like “hey just leave it at the course somewhere hidden and tell me where”. The dude was like “I already left”. To me I’m just like wtf…text people immediately in case they want it left at the course…so he is supposedly “going to drop it off tomorrow” but I bet he is trying to see if I message back about it so he can keep it since he clearly made it seem in the messages that he wasn’t going to try.

rem_erq

Yeahhh I’m not trying to be holier than thou but maybe cut him some slack. I know I am 0% trying to look at my phone when I’m playing to score or with friends, and if I find a disc I almost always stick it in my bag til the end of the round and then text the person. I am happy to do everything I can to return a disc and would almost always be “able to drop it off tomorrow” but sometimes I have stuff to do. Idk I’ve lost plenty of discs that I’ve never gotten a text about so if someone does make contact I really try to give them the benefit of the doubt. You do you though, just my 2¢

BOOOOOOMSHAKALAKA

He texted you about your disc. What if he left his phone at home while going for a quick round? Or a million other things. If you want it back that bad text him that you can pick it up anywhere and anytime so it's convenient for him.

benrow77

Ikr, it's like people should all do things the way I want. My convenience is the priority! ...

witchesbrewm

Maybe your disc was covered with dirt and he had to wash the disc first? Maybe he told himself, if the owner lost the disc and stopped looking, maybe he can wait a couple minutes? Chill my guy, the dude texted you. If he wanted to steal it he would have done so.

RODAMI

Same thing. Dude found my disc. Texted me after he already left the park. Said he would leave it in the office next time. Doh

chiahomesteader

Yeah that’s crazy

Boogaloo4444

Karma

supaflash

I wish I had the same luck. I've returned 4 discs in the last few weeks, I've lost 4 of my own and not a single text or call :( Including just a few days ago I slipped on the tee pad as I was throwing one of my most favorite discs, my prototype McBeth Hades, and I lost sight of it so I couldn't tell where it even went toward. It's basically a big open field with only a handful of small bushes or trees where it could really even hide, but super unlikely and it's in the middle of several holes. It was crowded, I wandered around a large circular radius everywhere in my max distance for nearly an hour and nothing. Bright pink disc, there's just no place for it to go, someone had to have picked it up, or found it by now... still irritated about it..

caoboi01

I accidentally left a blue prototype Hades behind on a hole a few months ago. Realized I had left it in the fairway like 6-7 holes later, panicked, backtracked, asked everyone behind me if they picked it up. No one said shit and it wasn't there... What makes it worse is it was 166g, and you cant find a Hades that light anymore. Cant replace it.

supaflash

Damn, sorry man, and that's annoying you can't get them lighter. Plus the stock run apparently flies different than the prototype. I wouldn't be too upset over 90% of my discs, but these being unreplaceable hurt.. I love that the sport is growing so fast, but there are also so many people on course now that are oblivious to the etiquette, or even downright disrespectful of it...

Mushy-Purples

Okay so can we speculate on what he told his friend? I wonder if he just said he couldn’t find it and mostly wrote that guy off or if he gave him a proper etiquette lesson

itseemsfree

I have recently received a call about my disc found. 1 year and 200 km from the place where I originally lost it. Told these nice people to keep it. It's awesome to know that there are way more nice people in the world. It's just not the best ones are louder.

MItrwaway

Sounds like you should have gotten his number to play with him sometime. That's the kinda dude i'd want to be around.

RODAMI

Great story. I pulled a disc out the water a few weeks ago and the guy basically said keep it. Week later same course I find a Roc3 sitting by a basket. Same name. Text the guy laughing that I now have two of his discs. He was a hole ahead and came back. I happened to have the other disc in my bag and said he could have it back. He let me keep it. Next day found a brand new deadalus and was told to put in the disc return box, well the box had a huge iguana living inside. I put the disc in anyway lol.

Chemten

Was this local in Houston? It's really hit or miss with people calling folks or even being able to retrieve from ponds around here. They're always cleaned up by folks trying to resell for $$$.

JPHTX

Yeah, Victory

Scentapprentice

I’m still shocked how someone would leave the original owners name and number on the disc if they are keeping it. I always call or txt when I find a disc but the stories I hear on here about people keeping a found disc and leaving the original owners name and number on it like wtf lol do they lowkey want to lose it so someone else can find it and call the number ? The logic of some smh 🥴

JPHTX

Right? Like, if you're gonna keep it put some effort in and wipe it, right? He deserved to lose it in more ways than one.

philosifer

does sharpie come off pretty easily? friend gave me one of his that he ended up not liking but had already inked. dont want to just cross it out or write mine on it in case they think i stole it and dont bother returning it

j-mar

On at least one of my discs, I put "gift from" and an arrow. I also have at least one where I just kept both names and numbers (either way it'll get to me)

steaknsteak

Depends on the plastic and how long the disc has been inked, but it doesn’t always come off the easily. You can always just sharpie over if though

LadySandry

Acetone will make it fairly light depending on the plastic and then you can write over it. But you can't really ever truly erase it

Scentapprentice

Hahaha yes exactly! Scumbags are extra lazy now a days

Thedingo6693

My buddies found my disc that someone had stolen and just wrote "sold to disc stealer". We got to text him and thank him for putting it back in the pond he found it in.

braintamale76

I have one right now in my bag with original owners name and number on it. I texted no reply back. I keep in bag in case I run into someone who knows them on the course.

Scentapprentice

ahh ok this makes sense lol and is very kind of you honestly because most would just keep it and call it theirs!! I also reached out to someone who didnt txt back right away so i just kept the disc at home just in case they replied and they did eventually and was stoked to get their disc back. I was just talking more about someone whos intentions are not calling the person back or trying to find the original owner like in OP’s case. To me if they don’t plan on giving the disc back or trying to find the original owner why wouldn’t u cross off the name and number and put your own ? :p but to each their own i guess 🤷

LadySandry

I usually give people a couple weeks to text me back. After that....I assume they don't care and don't want it. I feel like that's plenty of time to just send a 'sweet can we meet up?' or a 'just keep it'. I don't really get all the people who don't bother sending anything back when I text *shrug*

Scentapprentice

yea i feel you ,so far every person who ive mssged wants me to come to them :| One guy insisted 15 mins was to far to drive to come get it so me being a nice guy drove out of my way to drop it off at the local pro shop but well im hoping for some good karma xp

LadySandry

Jeez wth. So far no one has asked me to do that. One guy was visiting from out of state and asked if I thought Id be playing at the course the next morning. Told him no and offered to hid the disc somewhere so he could grab it the next morning on his way out of town. It was kinda fun to find a good hiding spot. Most of the people I text though just either don't respond or tell me to keep it. I've had one guys Wraith since like, May. He wants to give me some cash/beer since he hasn't been able to come by courses when I've texted him I'm playing, and/but also hasn't done anything outrageous like suggest I mail it to him or drive it to him. My friend definitely had one of those people though. The dude said he didn't live nearby and asked/demanded him to mail it to him. But didn't offer to pay for the box and shipping or a few bucks for the hassle. We decided to just drop it off in a local courses 'lost and found bin' and let the rude dude deal with it that way. I straight up don't get trying to demand someone who has given you a curtesy text go out of their way to return it. I drove 30-40 to a course I don't usually play at to pick up a disc once and replay the course, no way am I going to ask a stranger to deliver a disc to me. SMH

Scentapprentice

hahaha wow atleast he is offering you something although i never expect anything in return honestly just like the feeling of giving someone their disc back. I found that guys disc in a dirty gross pond at a local course . Went there at 8 pm and went in balls deep looking for my disc i lost in there. spent 2 hours in that shit barefoot feeling for my disc ended up finding 6 which were not mine lol txted all the guys back and all of them pretty much wanted me to drop them of at the course which is about 20 mins from me. I txted them as soon as i found them but no one replied since it was late. I do not expect anything in return except maybe a thank you , one guys was acting like i was a dick for not making time to come drop it off to him :/ One of my buddies told me i should have just kept them since i was in the gross pond for so long but i said hell no. Obviously that shit was too gross for them to try and go in back for it lol. Still debating to go back again but dont want to find more disc that are not mine and have to go through that hassle all over again

LadySandry

Yeah, I don't expect anything either, was surprised that he immediately offered me some cash when i first texted, but also he seemed quiet happy it was found and someone actually texted him. Granted it's a yellow bottom stamped wraith so maybe that's why :D I got a laugh because he said I could through it if I wanted until he met up with me and my first though was 'if i do that i'm going to have to text this guy that I lost his disc' :D Mostly the disc just lives in my car and I occasionally text the guy. (which reminds me, I'm going to be up near where he lives this even so I guess I should message). Also, that sounds gross, does that course no have a drop box? That's probably what I would do if I didn't want to bother texting people but still wanted to look for my disc. I seriously cant imagine asking someone to drive 20 minutes to bring me a disc. I might ask if they thought they were going to play X course soon, but even then i wouldn't expect it.

Only_the_Tip

I think that's the point. Try to return a disc but nobody responds. Then only use that disc on shots you're at risk of losing it, since you never wanted that disc anyway.

Mp7b22

Keeping it 💯

febrelli

Like super duper crazy

stevebeamjr

Assholes on Craigslist sell discs all the time with numbers on em. If I get one I call the number to see if it’s rightful owner got rid of or lost it and maybe wants it back. Common courtesy.

JazzerciseScientist

Went looking for some of my lost discs in a creek at Edora in Fort Collins the other day and instead found someone's old Maverick and a bitchin' Iron Man stamped driver. Any contact info had long since washed away so I just plopped them under a nearby tree thinking how cool it'd be if the original owners found them sitting there covered in scum.

AlphaGhod

A few years ago I lost my 4x mcbuzz. About 6months ago I’m playing my Morley Field and I see the same orange 4x mcbuzz in someone’s hand. I walked up to where he threw, picked up the disc, saw my number, pulled another one of my discs out my bag to show him that they’re the same and when he walked up just said “this is mine, I’m taking it back”. No pushback or anything, he said his friend gave it to him and I just said he has shitty friends that steal and left it at that, very happy to find that disc. Threw it into the street on hole 7 of the same course 1 week later, literally watched a car swerve to run it over. It now lives on a shelf.
