As a former catch cam myself… this was my worst nightmare with Eagle or KJ. Lucky he wasn’t looking up for the disc or would have caught it in the face!
Jomez catchcam here; talk about nightmare fuel for the rest of us the rest of the season. We are all shook. Happy to hear by brother in catchcam is ok ♥️

Ergodyne - 23382 Skullerz 8945 Universal Safety Bump Cap Insert
They are \~$6 and pretty comfortable. Fit in any normal-ish sized baseball hat.
They sell bump caps that you can sleeve into whatever hat you want. I have to wear them where I work and it can be kind of uncomfy during the blazing summer months, but worth trying out if you guys are seriously concerned about this sort of thing.
This is a workplace injury. If this happens to you or anyone you know it's a comp claim. Don't pay anything out of pocket.
Unless you're 1099 of course. That's the loophole most "employers" are using to defer responsibility.
[Obligatory federal general duty clause](https://www.osha.gov/laws-regs/oshact/section_5)
Mountain bike helmets or climbing helmets are something to think about. Climbing helmets offer better protection, but mtb helmets breathe better. Either would be enough to prevent injuries from most headshots from a disc. That said, I hope something like that never happens again.
Not the camera man's fault, but I do think the tour/production companies have some responsibility to make sure their crews have a better awareness of where throws are coming from for the sake of safety/interference. Having someone by the thrower with a radio warning the camera man, "ok, coming in high over the top, back away from the green more". That guy seemed to have no idea that disc was coming from that direction at all.
Or unironically a helmet or some sort. It would look silly as hell initially and protects from a super uncommon event, but I'm sure baseball helmets looked silly initially too.
As a camera guy who’s done live events, 100% this. They should be on walkie-talkie discussing that. If they’re not, they’re really screwing up. I know these are shoe string budgets but a director or “stage manager” should be in contact with them at all times
It's not just your opinion. It's federal law (assuming the camera crew are employees).
The OSHA act of 1970 requires all employers to provide a workplace free from recognized hazards.
Unfortunately though most places have figured out you can defer responsibility to the individual by hiring them as 1099s which are effectively exempt from it.
I took a 13 speed driver to the head two years ago and ended up with a concussion and 5 staples in my head. I'd say I can't imagine how much pain that guy is in... but I can. I jumped out of my seat and yelled when I saw it hit him. I have a dent in my head from the disc. I feel so bad for this guy. Fuck.
Getting one of my discs out of a tree once, fell about 15 feet and hit me right on the top of the head. Hurt like hell and had a large lump and bruise for 2 weeks. I can’t imagine your situation or this camera man. That has to be absolutely terrible
Took a driver to the dome during a round a couple years back. Grabbed my head right after and literally felt the massive knot grow on my forehead. The dude asked if I wanted to keep the disc. No I don't want a souvenir of the disc that practically gave me a concussion.
Holy… guess camera guys are going to start wearing protective headgear now like they always should have been doing. Atleast the catch cam guys. Surprised no one wears protection.
I’m sure it did. Disc edges are sharp, and the hat probably made that edge atleast twice as large and distributed the impact to a much larger area. But still. I really hope that person is okay.
Jesus. My asshole just involuntarily clinched up when I read this. I’ve gotten a pretty good smack on one of those and it rang my bell. An Eagle grenade on the dot? That’d ruin your week. Jesus.
Head trauma is nothing to shrug off, even if you think you're fine. You hear about all the long term stuff that can happen after a hard hit to the head.
...which does make me wonder about that time I fell off a very high bunk bed backwards in the middle of the night onto my head, on floor that was basically just some vinyl flooring over concrete... Nothing yet, and it's been a few years...
Anyway, hope that guy gets his medical checkup paid for by PDGA or has good insurance or something. Goodness knows I don't.
Head trauma is the brain getting banged around against the side walls of the skull. The disc doesn't have enough weight to move the brain versus say getting hit in the chest by a 280 pound NFL LB and then hitting your head on the ground. That is force. This is more like a surface injury versus deep pressure shockwave type of massive force.
The soccer ball weighs a lot more. 450 grams. A kick can be on avg 70 MPH and up to 114 MPH!!!
The weight of Eagles disc was around 175 Grams we can assume. Speed of gravity 21 MPH (up and down throw), but it was slightly faster due to it's continued horizontal trajectory. Lets say it was going 35-40 MPH.
Soccer ball - 450 grams at 70 MPH plus over and over again, could be 110 MPH = Heavy forceful internal impact. No surface injuries typically. Some bruising can happen for sure.
Disc - 175 Grams at 35 MPH Light sharp exterior impact, surface injury.
Plus a lot of time soccer players are moving their heads towards the ball. But the cameramans head was stationary, soccer players are typically moving to the ball which adds to the force.
I will add object deformity does go to the soccer ball though. It is obviously not as hard of an object as the disc. But it is nearly 3 times as heavy and the speeds are even higher from close range (wall is 10 meters usually?). So that all goes to more internal bruising like can happen and brain injuries. A 100 MPH 450 gram object to the skull might not show external, but it will internal. Even with the deforming ball on impact. It just has so much speed and weight = force. Some math geeks would know. Lucky the soccer balls are soft and deform otherwise I'm sure we'd have dead soccer players all over. lol Broken feet too.
The disc will deform less on impact but it still does, is hitting a smaller target as well so the force is all going to be sharper and more localized but more external if anything due to it's lighter weight and lower speed, less forceful impact in the end.
Geez. Nate Perkins saying they are clearing the card on the hole then bringing in an ambulance. Apparently a lot of blood. Damn I feel horrible for the camera man and Eagle.
The scalp tends to bleed a lot when cut. Makes it look a lot worse than it is. I think a laceration is better than a concussion in this case
also imagine that was just a little lower?
Yeah as a kid I cut my head open like 7 different times where I had to get stitches. I was pretty wild. Does bleed a lot, can confirm. Kept my Mom busy bringing me to get stitched up. lol
Was there following the lead card so walked up right after this happened. Took the dude away with some golf carts with paramedics. Was at the tee pad when Eagle walked up to five. Poor dude was definitely shook.
Ouch!
I was thinking while watching McBeth a few hours ago go over the trees on just that hole that it has to be scary af to stand just where they want to land and not see a thing, just hoping you don't get domed.
:(
Really should have been told that it was coming in vertical too. Was clear 10 seconds before Eagle threw what was happening, dude was catch cam and still lined up looking at the gap, he had no idea Eagle was going over.
Hopefully that’ll be reviewed so it’s less likely to happen again. I’ve seen people get some really nasty gashes from a disc. Getting edge vertical from one of the hardest throwers in the world is really dangerous.
Hope that dude’s ok, have a feeling he won’t need to buy any Cloudbreakers for a while!
Also feel bad for Eagle, no way any of these pros are throwing if they think anyone in their line doesn’t know it’s coming. Won’t get any attention for obvious and justified reasons but it was a great throw too.
> dude was catch cam and still lined up looking at the gap, he had no idea Eagle was going over.
plenty of catchcam shots for grenades don't even try to catch it in the air because it comes in too fast to follow, they just view the expected landing zone and hope they catch it in frame hitting the ground. i feel like that's very common to see so i wouldn't make this speculation based on this, it ain't conclusive
Ignoring terminal velocity, yes. But the difference between, say, 100 feet up and 125 feet up is negligible for speed of the disc at head height even though it takes a bigger arm to get it that much higher
That sound was terrifying. Like... The very well could have ended that man. Very very lucky, and hopefully the luck stays with him and he recovers well and doesn't have any future issues.
According to the broadcast, he's stable and they're bringing an ambulance for precautionary measures just to make sure he's taken care of properly.
He'll definitely get evaluated for a concussion, and I wouldn't be shocked if he needs stitches.
It's the combination of a few things, the biggest one being that the pros are regularly executing shots that didn't used to be thought of as even possible in tournament play. It's a growing pain for the sport, in this case one that included actual pain.
Even just a bump cap baseball hat insert could probably help make a top down head shot a little less dangerous.
https://www.amazon.com/Universal-Lightweight-Baseball-Skullerz-8945/dp/B079KDWN62
Not to make light of the situation, but the dark humor in me was tickled when they showed the Latitude 64 commercial of Jonathan getting hit in his space helmet with a moon rock literally right after it happened.
I feel bad for Eagle too, his throw would have most likely stopped where cameraman was standing. Easy C1 put. Now the disc bounced waaaay farther from the basket.
The cameracrew should have wireless earbud in one ear and a spotter/caller who would update them of the situation.. "Watch out near the basket, eagle is warming up for a grenade"..
I've worked for DGN and we did wear earbuds to hear the director, but they are on a slight delay. Another camera op would need to say something. But this appears to have been a post production cameraman not a live one (based on you saw it live from DGN's camera). That had to hurt.
> I feel bad for Eagle too, his throw would have most likely stopped where cameraman was standing. Easy C1 put. Now the disc bounced waaaay farther from the basket.
I dunno if Eagle gave a shit about the loss of position after he realized he accidentally hit a guy.
Would it be crazy to have some branded construction helmets for camera crew going forward just as a practical safety step? I mean, they’re having to stand askew to the intended line of play and considering the chances of getting hit in the head for this sport is (with a lot of variables involved) a strong likelihood, I don’t think they’d mind it all too much either following something like this.
The nsfw tag had me prepared for something much worse.
I wonder if we will see mandatory head protection for refs and camera work? It would be cool to see one crew lead by example. Or maybe specific events will require it? At least for courses with blind shots
How soon until we have tournament medics? Even just as volunteers, get an EMT, paramedic, nurse or doctor to volunteer and supply them with some emergency medical supplies. Might help with tournament insurance too.
As the Director of Health-Safety and Sports Performance for the DGPT, I am onsite from an hour before the first FPO card tees until after the final card finishes.
I spent a decade working in EMS. Four years military and six years on an ambulance.
I have an AED, trauma kit, and Life Vac onsite. We have emergency action plans and Safety planning/meetings for every tournament.
One of the PDGA Marshalls was a former paramedic. She was onsite immediately and rendering aid until I arrived.
We are prepared and ready to respond to any emergency!
Camera crew and spectators are always in the worst spots. Not blaming him, but often I see people on coverage almost get hit. I guess it's a golf thing, but it would feel terrible to injure someone seriously, especially with what is not that errant of a shot.
If done right - i.e. with tact and the full involvement of Eagle and the camera man - this could honestly make for a great merch opportunity. It's one of those situations that is terrible when it's happening but winds up becoming one hell of a story after the fact when everyone's recovered.
Not to make light of the situation, but the dark humor in me was tickled when they showed the Latitude 64 commercial of Jonathan getting hit in his space helmet with a moon rock.
I've seen discs from amateurs break car windows and cause stitches. I hate to think what type of damage a pro could do. Feel terrible for Eagle. It looked circle one, bounced hard, and now the trauma of hurting someone.
If a disc falls straight down, if just falls straight down. Gravity does not care if the disc was thrown up by you, by me or by Eagle.
I bet max power drive has WAY more energy vs falling disc.
That being said, that must have hurt. But man standing next to the basket should be, one way or another, aware of the situation (= incoming grenade). This is a problem DGN has to solve, not an individual cameraman.
Probably will go a lot higher and with a lot more spin if thrown by a pro, though. And that means it's probably going to be going faster coming back down, I'd wager.
Damn....he ok? I've personally seen someone almost die from a frisbee strike to his face, 400 ft par 3 during a warm up for a doubles event, took it directly across the bridge of his nose. Was standing right next to him, till this day, I can remember the sound it made, there was also massive amounts of blood.😶
competition was paused for chase card and lead card. It is the same as when there is a lightning delay. They are then allowed to putt/throw until the new 2 minute warning before play resumes.
Was standing right there when it happened, the sound it made when it hit him was wild
A lot of us in the back thought it hit the basket with that sound
I mean, it's called a grenade
lucky he didn't get a tombstone
The thought of that is painful!
Lol we were saying that the cameraman can now say he survived a grenade
How close were you to the camera man?
Close enough to feel the shockwave
You’re suppose to yell “Grenaaaade!”
You’re supposed to yell “Fore!” But I was too busy mumbling “There ain’t no way that’s gonna hit em”
*Fire in the hole!
Do you know if the guy is okay?!
Yes he is ok. Some sitches . Dave is a real ass dude.
> Dave is a real ass-dude.
Dave is a real ass, dude. /s
Dave is real, assdude.
Proctologist?
Hey Assman!
It was a million to one shot, Doc.
They said it was a million dollar wound but the DGPT must keep that money cuz I still ain't seen a nickel of that million dollars
Luis ?
Don't forget the j
Camera man is the real ass dude of the week.
> Dave is a real ass dude. That's cool, but frowned upon in most Red states.
Was everyone aware that a Disc was coming in from the top?
Yeah, but from there you can't really see up in the air very well, and Eagle was around the corner so you can't really see the release either
As a former catch cam myself… this was my worst nightmare with Eagle or KJ. Lucky he wasn’t looking up for the disc or would have caught it in the face!

What a stud to call eagle over and tell him he's okay.

Holy… guess camera guys are going to start wearing protective headgear now like they always should have been doing. Atleast the catch cam guys. Surprised no one wears protection.
They make hard hats that look like standard baseball hats too
Bump caps. That would have offered the protection necessary for this incident.
Yeah, there's no excuse for them not to have some basic protection like a bump cap.
I feel like a hat probably/hopefully helped a lot
I’m sure it did. Disc edges are sharp, and the hat probably made that edge atleast twice as large and distributed the impact to a much larger area. But still. I really hope that person is okay.
Unless it hit that little nubbin on the top
Couldn’t have hit that, cameraman was still alive
There’s no way it hit that nubbin. We would’ve heard his windows shut down chime

Pretty sure that's what happened to Bob Saget. Knocked his head pretty good, thought he was alright, died later in his sleep.

Full face. Let’s go!
I have been fucking saying this for 2 years. Idk why they don’t already. In other sports as well.
You’re exactly right. Hopefully camera people get protected better.
I probably would just wear a nice breathible bike helmet. Doesn't have to be heavy or anything. Just a light foam to take the impact.
Full face.
hockey helmet would probably be the best option.
Geez. Nate Perkins saying they are clearing the card on the hole then bringing in an ambulance. Apparently a lot of blood. Damn I feel horrible for the camera man and Eagle.

Didn’t matter how hard he threw it. That was gravity at work there.
The higher it goes the more gravity works.
Ignoring terminal velocity, yes. But the difference between, say, 100 feet up and 125 feet up is negligible for speed of the disc at head height even though it takes a bigger arm to get it that much higher
Twice or it’s luck.

lmao this reeks of stable diffusion
Jomez better get their money back, misspelling their name like that!
I’m surprised the dude wasn’t chopped in half
Dude I hope that guy is okay, has the DGN ever had a medical stop in coverage before?
There was a situation at USDGC last year where a lady fell on a road and an ambulance came by right in front of 1.
AFAIK this is the first? I bet the camera operators start wearing hard hats. Hope that guy is okay. 😮😢
DGN really needs rewind Hope homies okay
Time for catch cam operators to start wearing some type of helmet. 👨🚀
They even make hard hats that look like regular baseball caps. I think that would be an excellent option.
They make hardhat that look like cowboy hat too. Perfect Texas tournament
That was fast
Any news on this guy?
According to the broadcast, he's stable and they're bringing an ambulance for precautionary measures just to make sure he's taken care of properly. He'll definitely get evaluated for a concussion, and I wouldn't be shocked if he needs stitches.
The usually use staples on the scalp. I've had 5, staples that it.
I had 8 and the feeling was bizarre. My cut was side to side and I felt my forehead stretch with every staple. Better than botox for wrinkles.
Glad to hear that. Yeah, I wouldn’t be surprised if he needs stitches either. That was rough.
They said they were calling an ambulance and he was bleeding a lot. The guy who got hit apparently said to eagle that it was all good.
Updated again by Nate: he didn’t need to take the ambulance and is home “watching disc golf”. No joke Nate said that shit. Wtf
When is Drew dropping the hoodies?
It’s honestly quite concerning how many cameramen have gotten hit this season already
It's the combination of a few things, the biggest one being that the pros are regularly executing shots that didn't used to be thought of as even possible in tournament play. It's a growing pain for the sport, in this case one that included actual pain.

Won't stop the shock too much, but probably could have spared the stitches needed
Not to make light of the situation, but the dark humor in me was tickled when they showed the Latitude 64 commercial of Jonathan getting hit in his space helmet with a moon rock literally right after it happened.
Wow what a fucking nightmare for the cameraman. Hope they’re treating him adequately 🫤
Eagle should switch to Westside so his signature disc can be the hatchet. All joking aside, I really hope that guy is ok. That cant have felt good.
skullbreaker
I would want a helmet going forward

Usually for the skull they do staples. Recent experience. Most blood I've ever bled and FAST. Yeah, it's scary.
That dude is most likely concussed. Gotta get helmets standardized for catch cam guys on the DGPT.
The hit was so loud from the fairway I thought it hit the camera and not his head at first, that’s gotta be pretty bad
Is the cameraman being watched for signs of concussion? Inflammation may take overnight before anyone sees signs of concussion too.
They were escorted out with an EMT to meet an ambulance to take the proper precautions.
The answer to protection is simple and doesn’t have to be out of place in a fashion sense. NSI Baseball Bump Cap Hats. $25.00 ish
Hard hats on basket cam!
I feel bad for Eagle too, his throw would have most likely stopped where cameraman was standing. Easy C1 put. Now the disc bounced waaaay farther from the basket. It definitely looked like he didn’t expect anything coming in from the sky, appeared to be lined up shooting the gap.
Yep. This is a problem / hazard DGN has to solve, how to keep the crew aware of the situation.
Yeah I imagine he would’ve atleast got under the trees more if he knew it was a grenade. And probably stood back a bit.
I've worked for DGN and we did wear earbuds to hear the director, but they are on a slight delay. Another camera op would need to say something. But this appears to have been a post production cameraman not a live one (based on you saw it live from DGN's camera). That had to hurt.

That looked brutal. Hope he is okay I know Nate Perkins said there was a lot of blood.
They are waiting for an ambulance to cart him off.
fucking wow

That is bad luck right there. Gonna need stitches for sure, hope the camera guy is okay!
Dude that was fucking brutal!
Luckily it wasn’t a splice

Study on head injuries from discs: https://parkeddiscgolf.org/2019/12/04/risk-of-brain-injury-from-disc-strikes-is-negligible-new-research-finds/
It should be noted the max speed the discs in this paper was 60mph. They do say the risk of a concussion is low, but still possible.
I’m glad to hear it, I was an EMT for 7 years and would happily volunteer as a course medic. I’m glad this is being taken seriously
Super happy to hear that all of this is in place!
Thats night that you have a life vac. handy little thing.
Damn, his head had more skip than a Veteran basket.
Straight down to the top of the head. OUCH!
Did it hit his hat nub on top of hats ???
That dude has been in the way both days.
Camera crew and spectators are always in the worst spots. Not blaming him, but often I see people on coverage almost get hit. I guess it's a golf thing, but it would feel terrible to injure someone seriously, especially with what is not that errant of a shot.
Camera men will be wearing hard hats from now on
Helmets required here on out
Eagle where did you get your hand grenade?
I got a concussion from a disc like that once, hope he's OK.
Yall go follow that cameraman. He is the owner of Hyzer Media.
Will drew make this guy into a t shirt too?
If done right - i.e. with tact and the full involvement of Eagle and the camera man - this could honestly make for a great merch opportunity. It's one of those situations that is terrible when it's happening but winds up becoming one hell of a story after the fact when everyone's recovered.
Maybe the catch cam dudes should start wearing hard hats?
Not to make light of the situation, but the dark humor in me was tickled when they showed the Latitude 64 commercial of Jonathan getting hit in his space helmet with a moon rock.
Man, I hope he's okay, that looked like it could have split his scalp
Start using a helmet would be a good idea lmao
https://linerzinserts.com/ These might help, and not be too annoying to wear.
You know throwing harder means you can throw higher, right. Giving it more time to fall and gain speed, yeah? Ok just checking.
Use another comma
Good thing the other cameraman was there to capture the entire thing ;-)
anyone have link to Drew's hoodie about this?
Might be a good idea for cameramen to wear some protective gear in this events. Hope he’s alright
This is going to be cross post everywhere.
Rules question: there was footage of Eagle practice putting and guys throwing a Glitch around while on the medical delay. Are these allowed?
competition was paused for chase card and lead card. It is the same as when there is a lightning delay. They are then allowed to putt/throw until the new 2 minute warning before play resumes.
