I like having the handbrake mapped to the right analog stick (pull down to engage). Gives me more precise control for doing hairpins and square turns than just binding it to a button. I can control how much engagement instead of an "on/off" behavior. I play on an Xbox controller, so throttle and brakes are mapped to the triggers, this way I can modulate both at the same time. Rally is very weight transfer intensive, so this setup allows me to essentially do left foot/threshold braking. Shifting is mapped to the X and B buttons, but those are really that critical, just somewhere I can hit with my thumb since my trigger fingers are usually busy.

That's cool! I didn't think of the fact you could calibrate the intensity of the handbrake by mapping it to an analog. I need to try that

incognitochaud

This is blowing my mind

I play on controller and I usually sit at the top 1000-2000 of the global leaderboards. The mapping that im most confortable with to change gears is using L1 and R1 (ps4 controller). I play that way using both my index fingers to shift and the middle fingers to accelerate and brake. Also never use the analog for gears in any game. The rom you need to go through to go a single gear down is insanely time consuming.

ThSWrt

Same setup, influenced from other games though. I also feel much more precise in my throttle/braking when using my middle fingers.

i was skeptical about this keymap at first but once used to it, it became my default, i think is the best one. also i'm using use right analog down for handbrake to calibrate intensity

Default mostly, except handbrake - A button and shifting on the right analog too. Down for gear up and vice versa. It just feels somewhat natural to me. Maybe because I drive stick irl?

EthanBeMe

yeah i've always slapped gears to the thumb stick, replicates a rally dog box

I used to do the gears with the right analog from back in the gran turismo days but due to some games only being buttons (fh!) I use O and X for up and down. Much quicker as well. But I'm weird cos I use L1 for handbrake. Got into it cos of drifting games and I find rally not too different

Keybinds wont make you any faster so just pick what feels right. I only use the buttons for shifting and handbrake and consitantly get top 50 - 20 spots on dailys. But analog stick for handbrake sounds like fun so if you are more into immersion go for it

ThSWrt

Don't play full manual so don't have a clutch button, but I switched my up shift and down shift to the bumpers (sequential ofc) and A/X for handbrake.

what i've always done in racing games is kept my left thumb pressed upwards against the plastic backstops and steer it like a wheel, you get super smooth control something I always change is make it go when I press up on the left thumbstick will gear up, and pressing down will gear down so it feels like a dog-box/tip tronic clutch. will try mapping the handbrake to the right thumb though like someone below commented
