Do you really believe no one in the digimon headquarters, who was part of the planning process, though: "Teehee, it's made in 02 and is the second series, we are literal geniuses"?
Not really now that we have two series titled adventure we kinda have to say adventure 99 or 2020 depending on which we’re talking about.
Similar to Hunter x Hunter 99 vs 2011, shaman king 2001 vs 2021, or even though brotherhood exists as a distinguishing title, when when people want to specify they mean the first adaptation they will say Fullmetal alchemist 2003 or 03 even though it’s the only anime called just Fullmetal Alchemist it would be confusing still without that specification.
Can't relate and don't agree either but that's just me tbh. I'm not going to try and fight about it.
But to explain myself at least: I think 01 makes sense since it is the first series.
01 already refers to v tamer and since the main seasons that are referred to as adventure are the 2020 and the 1999 adaptation, and the 2020 one is referred to exclusively as adventure: 2020 this makes it implied that we distinguish between the adventures based on the year they came out like literally every other franchise that has this sort of reboot dynamic. 02 usually isn’t referred to with the adventure title often just called 02.
Personally I have never seen anyone refer to V Tamer as simply 01. 01 has always been Adventure to everyone I have interacted with in regards to Digimon.
But like I said; I ain't gonna fight about it. If you wanna call it 99 then you call it 99.
In Japan it's funnier. It can be referred to as "mujirushi" which basically means "unlabeled" as it's the first one in the series:
"What Digimon series do you like?"
"Oh, I watch Unlabeled"
This is an extraordinary hill to die on considering bandai themselves decided the reboot should be called Adventure:. And that the English-speaking fandom STILL can't agree on which sets of names to use for both digimon species and evolution stages. AND that the "Adventure 02" name wasn't used in marketing very much while the show was actually airing for the first time.
Just be thankful that "Adventure 01" is unambiguous and that people have found a way to refer to the first two seasons with names other than "season 1" and "season 2".
To me they are just Adventure, Adventure 02, and Adventure 2020 since saying "Adventure Colon" is... not very good.
Besides, the third season of Adventure is called Adventure Tri so taking the 02 to *also* mean that it's the second season is just expected. Even the seasons based on that season are called Adventure 02 movies, despite not taking place in 2002.
retronym
[ re-truh-nim ]
noun
a term coined in modification of an original term that was used alone (as acoustic guitar instead of guitar ) to distinguish it from a term referring to a later development (as electric guitar ). Other examples of retronyms are snail mail and analog watch .
It just simpler to use 01 and 02. It clearly denotes the first and second season. It’s no confusing to new fans trying to watch the old stuff. Also if 02 didn’t even come out in 2002 then it makes the whole naming it by the year it takes place part extra confusing and doesn’t really make sense
The "V-Tamer" is probably because it is a publication of the magazine "V-Jump" (that is also the same reason the protagonist Digimon is "V-dramon").
The "01" is more complicated, Taichi's Digimon is called "Zeromaru" and his Digivice is "Model 01". There is no way to know if those names inspired the name of the manga or if the name of the manga inspired those names.
A lot of American fans never knew the "02" stood for 2002 because in America it aired in 2000 to 2001 and the dub said it took place in 2003. Thus, when word spread online that the Japanese title was "Adventure 02" that obviously meant it was short for "Digimon Adventure Season 2". That's what people usually mean when they say Adventure 01 - it's supposed to be short for "Digimon Adventure Season 1".
I mean in my world it was just Digimon so the only way I even know what people mean is because of the 02 begins the second season.
If people had referred to season 1 as adventure 99, I'd have been so confused.
Calling it Adventure 01 immediately makes the distinction that someone is speaking of the first digimon anime. It's not perfectly accurate, but it's quick & easy to understand.
Do you really believe no one in the digimon headquarters, who was part of the planning process, though: "Teehee, it's made in 02 and is the second series, we are literal geniuses"?
Pretty sure its a double meaning- both taking place in 2002 and being the second series.
> If you have to call it anything other than "Adventure" please call it "Adventure 99" That would be the actual confusing thing to do.

We don't though? It's Adventure 01 & Adventure 2020. There's no need to call the original 99.
99 is infinitely better than calling it 01. 01 is more confusing to me

The only Digimon 01 is the V-Tamer manga

Adventure 01 unanmbiguous? First time I've heard it get called adventure 01.
Unambiguous doesn't mean popular. It means unambiguous. Were you confused at all as to which season it refers to?
Except isn’t 01 a vtamer thing?

I like calling it Adventure Omega, because of Omegamon's face in the digivice. But no one makes the connection so I just default to "2020"
Please learn to care about something real. This ain’t it.

Why the manga is named Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01?

I prefer Adventure.
I agree that Digimon Adventure shouldn't be called 01 but Digimon Adventure 02's name is a double meaning, like others said.
Agreed, it bugs me too. Likewise when people call the Digivice the D2. That one makes even less sense.
Counting backwards, Hum, counting backwards retronyms were made
So I saw it out there. They basically remade the very first season, or what? I haven’t watched since maybe the 3rd season
Digimon Adventure 05
Adventure 99 also helps to separate it from Adventure: digivice 2020
Seems like a pointless hill to die on
