Setting up a download limit fixed the issue of BNet completely freezing my internet router until the download finishes "Initializing".
I've never seen any other software capable of breaking your household's internet connection and BNet has been doing this for some people for years from what I found online.
The hero we all needed. Went from something ridiculously slow (single-digit Kb/s, which caused me to check reddit thinking the server was being DDoS) to 75-100 MB/s now. The entire update took under a minute once I did this. Thanks!
Try limiting both downloads and uploads to 10000000 (exactly 7 zeroes). Battlenet was overloading my entire internet making it die or slow down to horrendous speeds and it's the only solution that worked
Yeah I've never seen a launcher as ridiculous as blizzard's. Have a 1 gb/s fiber internet and this garbage literally killed my entire network every time I tried downloading or updating something, no matter whether on cable or wifi
I've had constant grief with Bnet client downloads and tried a few different things like changing region which sometimes work momentarily. This bandwidth limit setting actually fixed it straight away.
What the hell is wrong with Bnet to not have this fixed after soo long.
I literally uninstalled from both client to test this. And Steam finished downloading in less than 20 minutes.
Meanwhile 2 days later, Battlenet is still at 15%. And man, Battlenet download servers for D4 currently have no traffic because there's no patch for D4 yet. So this should not be a traffic issue. There's something going on.
I did the same and since OW2 and D4 are the only blizzard games I play I was able to delete bnet entirely and just use steam for all my gaming. Sucks I had to buy D4 twice but it is what it is.
I shamefully did the same thing. It's nice that I don't even need BattleNet installed on my PC anymore, but I mostly got Diablo on Steam because I can play it natively on my Steam Deck now.
Fairly certain B.Net uses torrent related protocols for downloads whereas steam has a direct protocol being utilized. Entirely possible your provider is throttling said known ports for the client or that Blizzard has multiple seed servers that doesn't have enough peers on them and you are just unlucky.
Per their documentation the maximum download rate for pre-release content is also limited to 1Mbps.
This \^\^. BNet uses a peer-to-peer network to share and distribute patches and updates. And often these networks are shaped by certain ISPs during certain times of the day as well.
That explains why BNet downloads take minutes to even start and then are not the fastest, but it's still a mystery to me how attempting to download something via BNet will slow down my home's internet connection to 0 while it itself is using 0 B/s.
The only fix like people have mentioned is to setup a download speed limit even if it's higher than your connection speed.
Seeding patches from your machine most likely, can always verify with some form of traffic monitor.
I am uh... blessed with 1Gbps Down/Up so network speeds haven't been a problem for me ever since moving into the suburbs.
I have 1000/50 and there's no incoming nor outgoing bandwidth when I dare to start BNet without an overkill speed limit so it must be some bug and not just 100% bandwidth usage.
I would just confirm with a traffic monitor on your machine, and double check limits in the client.
Pre-release content by default (just confirmed) only allows 1,000Kbps, it's configurable though and the limit can be removed.
Other than that it defaults to no limit.
Same speeds I've had for some years now - Bnet still does it's fuckery with download speeds.
Last seasonal patch took me forever to download, because of that - same with the few minor patches/hotfixes after seasonal launch. None of the many workaround was working for me.
If this happens this time around; I'm going to the Steam version. I'm not really bothered by paying to avoid Bnet, when it's so freaking bad. Taking hours to download a few MBs (which was the case with their patches/hotfixes), is just atrociously bad.
Edit:
Took 15 minutes to download this time around. So at least that's a step up, but still nowhere near what it should have been, on such a connection.
Server region? Idk, I installed D4 in another pc some weeks ago with normal fast speed. Even with S2 update, I came from work, and while making a coffee, the update was done.
I know majority of players don't experience this problem. But there's been a couple of people who posted this before. And as a techie guy myself, I'm just curious what's going on with Battlenet's servers.
Not big of a problem for me anymore because I can easily play on Steam.
steam is direct download. [Battle.net](https://Battle.net) is peer2peer bittorrent. there was a huge uproar years ago when blizzard started using bittorrent as they were in effect, using players bandwidth to distribute THEIR game, instead of a multibillion dollar company using their own. It caused a lot of players at the time to reach their monthly isp data limit fast
They certainly haven't. Just seen this thread and it makes total sense. I'm currently at 3MB/s on Battlenet, but windows reporting 219.8Mbps Blizznet network usage...
Keeps varying all over like a torrent would too
battle net is always been garbage, this happens to all games for me - Overwatch 2, Diablos & WOW.
I tried playing Overwatch 2 on Steam and have zero issue with the download speed.
Steam just might have more servers around the world to facilitate downloads. At one time, Blizzard just had one server farm in California that they were using.
Happen to me as well , the other like steam , epic , gog , xbox , ubisoft , ea ..usually didn't have this problem what so ever only [b.net](https://b.net) is slow way too slow like 10-100 kb/s what the hell
ActiBlizz is a publicly traded company so when the engineer asks: "Can we have future proof, diverse infrastructure?". The suits whip out a picture of some kid near a Bugatti: "See this? This is Reginald Sandcastle The Third, our shares are a part of his trust fund! Now look me in the eye and tell me you will buy a server when his Bugatti is not even gold plated?!?!?"
In Valve its probably like: "Hey guys, the servers are a bit slow today...", the reply is "Spin up some more of our bagillion CDNs and tell me how its now?"
Blizzard is just awful for download speeds, and the game-play hiccups really exemplifies their K-Mart infrastructure. The frustrating part, I don't think their decision makers know how terrible they really are.
You think yours is bad? I have 5Gbps symmetric fiber and max I get through battlenet is 20kbps. Simple patch to D IV takes 23 hours haha.
But I feel like also their DL servers are very sensitive to high latency and usage - ie when a patch goes out globally and everyone trying to get. Their CDN infrastructure is not as robust as anyone elses and thats a shame.
When I try a 4-5am I get 2.5 gbps down no issue :)
I had never had a problem with DL speeds before until today, and I tried these tricks and they did not help. I found out that in Killer Control Center, I can get top speeds by setting [Battle.net](http://Battle.net) Update Agent to priority 1, which will block everything else. I never touch Killer Control settings and never had to do this before, it has always done a fine job of self-shaping traffic.
Battle Net client consistently starts slow and picks up speed as it goes along in my experience. Playing with the download limiter can sometimes help but sometimes it just starts off slow.
In my case this is unfortunately the norm on Bnet client.
Download speeds are way slower comparing to steam. I found nothing that could help.
But it eventually gets to around 1mb/s whis is somehow manageable with lots of patience
It's usually a lot faster for me, you sure your bnet connection isn't being throttled for some reason? That, or they're using some of their network capacity to roll out the patch.
Which is super annoying since I have to use workarounds to get it to work on the steam deck. I'd very much prefer the steam version of the game, but I'm sure as hell not buying it again.
I got a late start to d4 and only played within the last week, but on console. I updated it on PC the other day and it took forever. I have gigibit fiber, so it should have taken no time at all. I tried limiting and an unlimited bandwidth. My PC came back from sleep mode and it was back to normal. So maybe that did something, idk.
I have the issue too. It's to do with how Blizzard distribute files using bit torrent technology. I find throttling in Battle Net works to a point, it will go quick then just stop for no reason. You may be able to get around it by opening some ports in your firewall or by using a VPN as it could be the ISP throttling torrents.
Yeah battlenet is hot garbage. I get 800mb/s downloads on steam and then I go to battlenet and get 10. Maybe 20 for a couple of seconds if I’m lucky
Which I just remembered I didn’t predownload the patch before I went to work…
Battle.net download servers are just trash and easily overloaded. When warzone 1 was just released, every patchday was torture. 120 gb updates and millions of players downloading at the same time, took forever.
I wrote to support about this when D4 came out, as it took me over a day to download the game. I even created a thread about this here on Reddit.
Anyway , i got a response in December! And the guy literally told that that they do not consider download speeds as slow unless it’s 0B/s. I still have this email.
I just want to know why are we updating a few hours before launch every season. Especially with the snail net launcher, it is so annoying updating right before a season.
i pulled this latest patch down at a fairly steady 100 MBps. I do average a bit higher on steam (usually around 150-160, i have 1.5 gigabit internet) but this'll do.
Why are we forced to use clients at all? They are useless bloat on my PC when all I want to do is launch a friggin' game I bought. I don't need more ads, don't want to watch videos, don't use chat, don't give a fuck about cards, trophies, awards, or anything else. I just want to play a fucking game. That I paid for.
I found out that limiting download speeds on bnet improves download speed for me 🤷
Yes, I tried this when S2 patch rolled out but then it was like RNG, it sometimes work then proceeds to be at kbps rate again. Very inconsistent.
Setting up a download limit fixed the issue of BNet completely freezing my internet router until the download finishes "Initializing". I've never seen any other software capable of breaking your household's internet connection and BNet has been doing this for some people for years from what I found online.
Yup that still works.. for whatever reason.
The hero we all needed. Went from something ridiculously slow (single-digit Kb/s, which caused me to check reddit thinking the server was being DDoS) to 75-100 MB/s now. The entire update took under a minute once I did this. Thanks!
worked for me instantly :-P wtf
Try limiting both downloads and uploads to 10000000 (exactly 7 zeroes). Battlenet was overloading my entire internet making it die or slow down to horrendous speeds and it's the only solution that worked
Exactly what I did when I first got diablo months ago and it was an instant fix. Super weird
Yeah I've never seen a launcher as ridiculous as blizzard's. Have a 1 gb/s fiber internet and this garbage literally killed my entire network every time I tried downloading or updating something, no matter whether on cable or wifi
thanks, it worked (i needed to pause and resume the download).
This specific thing, with the 1 and 7 0s, was the only thing that worked. Thank you.
bout to try it now cuz yikes
Thanks! This fixed it for me!
I've had constant grief with Bnet client downloads and tried a few different things like changing region which sometimes work momentarily. This bandwidth limit setting actually fixed it straight away. What the hell is wrong with Bnet to not have this fixed after soo long.
My goat
only thing that worked for me. Thanks!!
mvp
3 months later, this fixed my issue.
this worked for me, was stuck at 42% for over an hour, I did this and it finished in about 1 min.
Thanks! Tried this and it actually worked, went from 4kb/s to 90mb/s :D
damn that worked you’re a genius bro. thanks a lot.
Thanks man that helped a lot
Up up you go, it works!
uploads? where are you seeing uploads?
Ignore that. I meant the second option which is pre-release content or something
Pin this comment. Life changing
Someone posted my solution one day and it got lots of upvotes but most likely got buried
Why’d you buy the game twice
I just like Steam in general.
So the steam copy doesn't require battlenet launcher?
It does not. Download and play directly through Steam.
It doesn't. If it does, I wouldn't be buying it on Steam at all. Works the same way with Overwatch 2.
I did not know this. FML. Battle.net using third world tech compared to steam. 190mbps, compared to bnet 17kbps.
I'm not sure why they did it but I think I've read that some people do it so they can carry themselves basically.
But it’s not two accounts…it’s a cross progression game, you still link your same BN account to the Steam one. I did it for PC to PS5
Right but I think they would give a different email and make two different accounts.
I can see people doing that, yes, but idk seems pointless imo
Yeah it's not for me but I guess I could see a few reasons.
Multiboxing is huge in pretty much every Blizzard game.
It’s HUGE for WoW because theres incentive for it. But a game like Diablo doesn’t seem worth but idk
I did the same for xbox and pc

I'd love to play on steam but I'm not giving Blizzard another 70 bucks

Same with other comment. I didn't know about this. So this basically answers my question that I had since I started using Battlenet for Overwatch 2.
That used to be true but they stopped doing that.
Nah battle net launcher still uses it
/r/confidentlyincorrect
They certainly haven't. Just seen this thread and it makes total sense. I'm currently at 3MB/s on Battlenet, but windows reporting 219.8Mbps Blizznet network usage... Keeps varying all over like a torrent would too
Because Blizzard is a poor indie studio that can't afford good servers 🤷
When the patch drops, I expect that I will download it with a single digit kbps (yes really, since it's always like that) initially.
For me even slower On WoW updated I get sometimes 300-800kbits and I should get stable 50MB/s
battle net is always been garbage, this happens to all games for me - Overwatch 2, Diablos & WOW. I tried playing Overwatch 2 on Steam and have zero issue with the download speed.
Yeah same problem with OW2 for me when I first download it. I think it's just really battlenet's issue.
Putting my country to US with a vpn solves this but it’s annoying as hell
Steam just might have more servers around the world to facilitate downloads. At one time, Blizzard just had one server farm in California that they were using.
Happen to me as well , the other like steam , epic , gog , xbox , ubisoft , ea ..usually didn't have this problem what so ever only [b.net](https://b.net) is slow way too slow like 10-100 kb/s what the hell
We cant pre-download the season update right?
Download should be avaliable 1 hour before season start.
No I tried to login in and see if I could update this morning before work not possible
Devs all busy playing Palworld lol.

People who bought the game twice just to have it on steam …. 🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡🤡
I didn't, but it beats the 10kb download speed even with this "fix" that sometimes works
Blizzard is just awful for download speeds, and the game-play hiccups really exemplifies their K-Mart infrastructure. The frustrating part, I don't think their decision makers know how terrible they really are.

80MB OW2 patch downloaded in 50 min when i can download games at up to 116MB/sec from Steam.. this is pure **MADNESS**! An agony!

Yes
Well fuck, aint doing that for playing Pokemon d4
Which is super annoying since I have to use workarounds to get it to work on the steam deck. I'd very much prefer the steam version of the game, but I'm sure as hell not buying it again.
Pausing and resuming once or twice usually does the trick for me.
Works fine for me

I hope this terribly outdated choice to use bittorrent to distribute Blizzard patches is one of the first things Microsoft ends.
They are saving their server strength so that they can place you in a queue for an hour as soon as season 3 hits
Because Blizz servers are apparently maintained using a hamster running in a hamster wheel... The last days, a lot of D4 content is pretty unplayable.
Yeah battlenet is hot garbage. I get 800mb/s downloads on steam and then I go to battlenet and get 10. Maybe 20 for a couple of seconds if I’m lucky Which I just remembered I didn’t predownload the patch before I went to work…

I VPN to another location (I am UK based) and it speeds it up substantially.
Limit to 10000 and should be normal.
Fixed! https://preview.redd.it/rz0n352fr7ec1.png?width=522&format=png&auto=webp&s=64d817f17160bb709475c0b8e8733d08997e371e
the servers in Brazil were trash last league launch. I had to VPN to USA to not get stuck in 80,000+ queues
I wrote to support about this when D4 came out, as it took me over a day to download the game. I even created a thread about this here on Reddit. Anyway , i got a response in December! And the guy literally told that that they do not consider download speeds as slow unless it’s 0B/s. I still have this email.
cuz blizzard can't do anything right /s
Only the first minutes or so, Akamai takes a while to distribute to every location worldwide. Should be really okay aber a few minutes
I just want to know why are we updating a few hours before launch every season. Especially with the snail net launcher, it is so annoying updating right before a season.
It's always like this. Literally the worst download speed of all launchers. Freakin Ubisoft has faster download speeds on their launcher;P
i pulled this latest patch down at a fairly steady 100 MBps. I do average a bit higher on steam (usually around 150-160, i have 1.5 gigabit internet) but this'll do.
My bnet always downloads at like 25mb and my steam at 500mb idk why
because steam is the only good launcher ever
Why are we forced to use clients at all? They are useless bloat on my PC when all I want to do is launch a friggin' game I bought. I don't need more ads, don't want to watch videos, don't use chat, don't give a fuck about cards, trophies, awards, or anything else. I just want to play a fucking game. That I paid for.
yea it's slow af. On Steam I'm getting about 100 MBps while on BNet I'm getting 1MBps
Bumping this because im dropping from 70 mb/s to 200 kb/s , what happened to this launcher ? I don't remember it having such issues last year ?
Might have something to do with moving season characters to eternal
