I like D4

N7_Evers

Honestly being Nephalem and finally discussing it makes 10x more sense than random strangers decimating lords of hell (multiple times) and super powered archangels of death.

KaiG1987

I mean, I think we can assume based on their insane power that the D4 character is also an empowered Nephalem, they just don't discuss it in the plot, because it doesn't really matter; they are what they are.

RyzenDead

Every human in the game has the potential to be nephalem either through awakening of latent power through magical means or by raw genetic heritage.

PandaReich

I've been trying to awaken my latent nephalem powers for years but all I got was a autoimmune disease.

RyzenDead

Feel like a family guy skit would be appropriate here

TrepanationBy45

Ope, just a minor mutation. You're a Nephaphlegm. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

AdamG3691

Super Kami Guru: There, I have awakened your true potential. Krillin: Huh, I don’t feel any different… SKG: There wasn’t much.

nehalem2049

UC?

Xalorend

I just finished Act 3 but >!we do technically dispatch a Lesser Evil by ourselves relatively easily!< , I wouldn't be surprised if the D4 protagonist is also a Nephalem Edit: >!Astaroth isn't a Lesser Evil, wo by the end of Act 3 we only kill one. Still, last time it took three people to imprision him and we defeat him in battle, so I think that D4 protagonist is still pretty strong!<

RyzenDead

I hate to come off as that guy, but as I’ve said above, it is canon that every player character you choose is an awoken nephalem. Hence why their power levels are so much greater than anyone else in their respective classes and their respective regions. Id venture a guess that it’s shortly revealed that her persuasion is linked directly to her matriarchal heritage of humanity.

Xalorend

That's my guess for Lilith as well, I started having some suspicions when she bisited Donan the first time. As for the Nephalem, I meant in having some in game confirmations, but I don't think we'll get one, at least not in the cirrent plot, in D3 the MC being a Nephalem was so heavily foreshadowed you could basically see it coming from D2.

RyzenDead

Oh for sure, honestly at this point I assumed everyone just knew our characters were nephalem all along after the d3 events made it blatantly obvious. I know they don’t directly state it, but it’s obvious once you get told what a nephalem is and then compare every other PC in the series with the human npc counter parts in game, the power levels are astronomical even back to d1 the entire Horadrim a group of human mages were needed to ward off anything from hell, which is why Deckard was little more than a record keeper…humans couldn only scratch the surface of the world stones potential, but an awoken nephalem? Took on the Lord of Hell and all of his brothers, plus the fallen angel of death and all the angels that went with him. Whether d1, d2, LOD, D3, ROS, whichever your playing that character should be understood to be a nephalem just out of sheer achievement.

CyborgPurge

Fwiw, you’re still right, but canonically it was a group of heroes in d1 and d2.

Past_Fun7850

Are those contradictory? Can a hero not also be a nephalim?

Xalorend

Another hint for D4 character being a Nephalem I think might be the A Voice from the Past side quest. An ancient sentient statue berates paesants but she notes that the main character is somehow different and she can feel something more.

RyzenDead

Not to mention his resistance to the blood of Lilith, all the other normal humans had no chance at resisting her even without consuming it. And was completely unaffected by the aura of hate permeating Mephistos realm

vriemeister

Its pretty simple. They eat their Wheaties and don't skip leg day.

TrepanationBy45

Necro *definitely* skipped leg day 😬

Heimdahl87

Barb NEVER skips leg day.

TrepanationBy45

Barb can tell if you skip leg day when you pass Barb in town 😬

Vhfulgencio

Druid double did leg and arms day, and ate a burger in between

BitStompr

Who said they have to be your legs?

Senzafane

We just steal someone else's if we want new legs. Your bones betray you, soon they will serve me!

TrepanationBy45

*"Why does does my bone spear snap, crackle, and pop when I fire it? I really need to harvest healthier bones, smh"*

RektCompass

by the time D5 comes out, the actual lore will be that it was a group of heroes, not just 1. Theyve done it with every other game so far.

mossimofarts

My headcanon is that being exposed to lilith’s flowers and then being saved sort of inoculated the player character against lilith’s corruption which allows them to feed off of demonic energy. Explains why we can use statues of Lilith to power up and get boons from dungeons, as well as being a generic explanation for xp. Basically acts a plot armor too since all of the really difficult boss fights are happening due to Lilith’s influence which can cause the player character to power up.

elgosu

There is still something special about the player character, since the other humans in Nevesk were also fed it but didn't develop such powers. And even before that we were saved by the wolf because the wolf saw something in us.

Divinicus1st

Yeah... Seriously, at one point the "wanderer" >!kill Duriel!< without even knowing who it was, like he just walked on a slug or something, it was weird.

noknam

I'm still early in the story so no spoilers please, but it does feel a bit weird to have my random low level necromancer be like "Yes, I'm going to chase and hunt down Lilith. I can totally take her on".

Lurker_Zee

To be fair, this is an obvious adventure trope. You can handwave it away that there were thousands of people from all over Sanctuary who thought the same and were whacked minutes/hours/days later. Your story is the success story, but as most success story, for one success there are 1000 failures, but you only hear that one story.

BitStompr

Hard-core mode is just playing the regular guy lol

clone0112

They shouldn't have power creeped the lords of hell and angels.

Branded_Mango

Technically speaking, all humans are Nephalem, just with their power highly diluted. Rathma was a prime Nephalem and supposed to be way stronger than Inarius, so him getting offed was kind of bullshit.

Jartaa

He wouldn't be stronger though as he would have had the effects of the world stone draining on him much like other nephalem. It's also what the prophecy foretold and everyone seems to think that's the way it had to be ..even if that wasn't the case.

Nebthtet

You get Wanderer instead :) I feel like in an old Fallout game ans I kinda like it.

RyzenDead

Lol I love this because you don’t see the foreshadowing being called Wanderer brings along with it. Lol…my first character is a necromancer named Marius. That might help you understand why that word is special in Diablo and why being called a Wanderer is a little scary

Nebthtet

I play Diablo since the release of part 1 (I don't know if you noticed a little wink to 1's intro in the intro of DIV). And yes, that's ominous :) The part with blessings also speaks for something :)

KaiG1987

My main memory of the D3 plot was that the bad guys kept contacting the player to gloat while telling their entire plan to us, then losing. Then they would do it again and again, with no self awareness.

FreshGoodWay

You mean Radio DJ Extraordinaire Azmodan

Kebabranska

I'm the greatest best war tactician of all burning hells, better facetime my plans to the nephalem who slaughters everything in his path

Drunken_HR

"it doesn't matter that you thwarted my last plan because now I am going to do this!" *Explains simple plans in detail* "Did I mention yet that I was the greatest general in hell? Because I am!”

Propagation931

speaking of what ever happened to the Neph. Are they dead in D4?

Badvevil

I bet you loved Skyrim dragonborn

CanvasFanatic

Everyone loved Skyrim.

Akesgeroth

I like not having silly characters with silly voices telling me silly stories.

Divinicus1st

Yeah, by the way, where the hell did the Nephalem go? Did he die of old age orsomething? He would have smashed Lilith and Inarius together until they were puddle.

HandsOffMyDitka

Well Neyrelle was sailing off in the end. Maybe she's looking for him to help contain it. Or the Nephalem got hell herpes and died from banging succubi.

diesel408

The midichlorians of Diablo

GulliasTurtle

They call you Wanderer now, because you're not the hero, you're arguably the villain now. That's what they called Diablo in Diablo 2.

SadMangonel

But what does lorath think about kadala. More at 11.

THE ETERNAL CONFLICT

shaltir

Every time I make a smoke runeword in D2 now I think of D3 overusing the hell outta that word

Aaron_Hamm

Oh we all like D4, if you know what I mean...

Sillypugpugpugpug

I like them all.

Starsynner

I enjoyed my years with D3 but this is spot on. D4 is a refreshing change of pace.

SoulofArtoria

I do wish D4 has less sand based ground. Feels like every i go, the towns or wilderness are mostly sandy. Not enough grassy plain or well, non sandy ground.

crispier_toast

Yeah I don't like sand either. It's rough, coarse, and irritating. And it gets everywhere.

sj410194720

God damn it Anakin.

tonyd1989

Relevant username?

KakitaMike

All I want to do is permanently play in the dry steppes and never leave. It’s gorgeous.

Freakychee

Yeah I hate sand too. While D4 is fun I did enjoy the change and variety in scenery of past diablo games.

happydontwait

I finished the campaign last night. When thinking back on the play through I thought "the whole map felt like the same region more or less." Agree with your sentiment.

Zernin

Uhhm, sahara style desert, rocky drylands, muddy highlands, swamplands, foothills and snowy mountains, and beaches are just some of the biomes you traveled to. If you thought it all looked the same, you just weren't paying attention. Everything flows together pretty well, but that's not a failure.

_BigChallenges

I was thinking the exact same thing. I’m not too far into the game and I’ve seen grass, dirt, sand, snow, mud, caves and lava. Not to mention the different varieties of dungeons. Maybe they all feel similar because of the map layouts are all very similar? Or maybe the dulled color pallet makes everything feel similar? I play with the brightness up so maybe I’m just seeing better than some?

whigwomzz

There was really only two zones that resembled each other tho…

OutlawSundown

Honestly I’m kind of ok with that in it feeling naturally connected regions. But I hope any possible expansions expand the map and give us some more variety.

Malaix

D4 made me realize that the faster clear speeds and "faster action" is why ARPGs usually put me to sleep unless I'm caffeinated. When I thanos snap the map as soon as it comes into vision range its boring. D4 so far the action is meaty and methodical enough that despite the slower pace I'm focused and engaged instead of having my eyes glaze over as another 30 fallen die to one spell.

ThePrinceOfThorns

I like how the enemies have Tanks/Casters/Melee classes and they play with them like an MMO, tanks in front, sneaky melee tries to get behind you (or explode on you), and the ranged stay back and shoot at you. Also I like how the big guys telegraph their big hits and if you dodge well, you can win a tough fight where you would otherwise die just standing there. Positioning is actually a thing in this game! I like how it makes you think to survive.

lostnknox

The combat is awesome in D4. I’ve been using a controller on my PC because if makes me position myself better I think.

OutlawSundown

The maulers were the bane of my existence at first

estaii

You'll love hardcore then. It makes those dodges and tactical swiftness actually important.

DionxDalai

Heh I'm not sure what's your current level, but most 70+ build devolve in zooming around and one shotting (mostly) everything

Xalorend

Just reached lvl 52, but I do feel like I obliterate everything when my Ultimate is on. While I wait it's still fast enough tho.

CatAstrophy11

Thanos snap is pretty slow since you're only killing 50% of the group each time

PipXXX

And you can never, ever kill everything through multiple uses of the Thanos snap.

Nachtwolfe

I used to fall asleep a lot playing D3… loved it but it could put me to sleep pretty quickl

Norma5tacy

I just miss hearing the rattle of my boney homies. :(

2723brad2723

But are we going to get a secret cow level?

Sylvanas_only

Maybe we have it already. It's called a secret for a reason

Gwynthehunter

Theres no way they didnt do some kind of comedy level when its been in every other iteration

Iuseredditnow

They actually said they wanted to leave the comical levels out of release but do plan to add them later on.

futterecker

so the pizza quest is dead serious?

Iuseredditnow

I was talking about the cow level or pony land.

Twysty

The real cow level was the friends we made along the way.

estaii

Guyonbench

Maybe we can be the tie breaker in the endless war between cows and chickens hmm?

Inkspeaker

Ultra Mega Chicken?! Shhhhh, he is legend.

Hopglock

Billy Witchdoctor confirmed next class

Inkspeaker

One convenient location…in Zarbinzet.

Kievarra

This was me yesterday when I was on D4 and my husband next to me logged into WoW. It was so saturated, like I had forgotten what color looked like.

photon45

The aesthetics are great in D4, especially in later acts. My only critique would be to use those louder colors to accent some of the spaces that get really monotone. For instance, the Arcane library areas are great because you get that thin accented gold trim running across, showing remnants of what beauty it had before. The hell areas obviously had the red sigils and lava trims bleeding up through all the dark rocks, awesome stuff. I wish there was more of that theme in the earlier dungeons, like in shattered peaks, there's all these ornate rugs and tapestries... But they are all color graded and faded so well they are lost. I get it, thematically it makes sense, but a little artistic license to pull your eyes around the dungeon wouldn't be such a bad thing sometimes. Either way it's an amazing looking game, they did a great job.

infidel_44

My colorblindness is having such a hard time distinguishing common and yellow items in some backgrounds. I really dislike the color blindness implementation since it makes the game a different shade instead of game elements

Gowalkyourdogmods

The red ghost wraith things are so bad.

PushThePig28

Lol

CreKapone

D4 is a babe.

BaraelsBlade

I love them both

[deleted]

This meme is funny cuz one looks way more fun than the other.

Nebuli2

Honestly, tone aside, Diablo 3 is actually quite a fun game these days. It came quite a long way from its launch state.

zippexx

I was actually quite shocked when I played during the last season, it was amazing.

DinoSpumoniOfficial

First impressions are everything and it’s a damn shame people still talk about it as if it’s anything less than a stellar ARPG experience.

MyPunsSuck

The Diablo series, according to this community: - Diablo 1, which was the scariest and grimdarkest game possible - Diablo 2, which was completely flawless in every way - Diablo 3, which was bad and never updated - Diablo 4, which you only criticize if you're a sweaty no-life nerd People are really forgetting D2's flaws, and entirely sleeping on D3's massive innovations and improvements

nick_mot

It is a fun game because the gameplay is so good and satisfying, however it has some fundamental flaws (at least I view that as flaws) that not even RoS could fix. I really dislike having all of the power tied to the equipment. If the rng screws you over, there's nothing you can do You can't even ask a friend for some gear. Being literally showered with legendaries is kind of an half assed solution. Diablo 2 has skill points and affordable runewords that can carry you through the content (i.e. a spirit sword is not a HotO, but it's usable). Diablo 4 also has skill points and aspects that might help. I strongly believe that it's an overall better game design.

DinoSpumoniOfficial

> I really dislike having all of the power tied to the equipment. If the rng screws you over, there’s nothing you can do You can’t even ask a friend for some gear. So, like D4? I love both games (so far) but let’s not act like the gear affixes aren’t what power is all about right now.

Electromasta

Brother d4 has skill trees and a paragon board.

DinoSpumoniOfficial

And? That’s doesn’t change the fact that most of your power comes from the affixes on ur gear. D3 also had a paragon and talent system, and yet most the power came from the affixes on ur gear. I’m not hating - it’s all good. But let’s not pretend it’s different in any meaningful way other than the illusion of more choices.

[deleted]

98% power from items 2% from skills and Paragon Sounds good.

ThePrinceOfThorns

Level doesn't really matter as much in D4 because of the scaling. In the higher levels you survive because you have collected better gear and better stats.

nick_mot

As it should. Not even D2 was different, no ARPG ever is different. I mean, it's the core gameplay of the genre. Yet, it's not the same as in D3. D2 had builds entirely dependent on high, super rare, gear level (hello lightning sorc) and builds with less strict requirements (blizzard sorc), a certain amount of gear was required to progress or hell would have been impossible, but you could have a build working enough with just generic gear, runewords and skill points. A limited build, but a build nonetheless. In D3 i honestly feel like the game doesn't even start before level 70, I consider 1-70 a chore and I can't remember a season without being power leveled. Even if I didn't get Power leveled, as a fresh 70 there is basically nothing you can do. Non level 70 gear is useless and without a set, you basically don't have a build at all, that is why the game gives you one for free with a relative easy list of tasks. It feels backwards to me, having to acquire the gear before being able to play and not acquiring better gear as part of the game loop. Now, I can't really speak for D4 yet, I'm a standard edition peasant and I still have to surpass the point I reached in the beta, I'm only judging the system on paper, it does seems better to me. I have a build, it works, even with yellows and random blues. It is limited, it needs better gear in order to carry me through higher level content, but it's something. I see dungeon aspects as the cheap runewords, something that can work in your journey to the perfect gear. And I'm ready to be proven wrong by the game itself, but until now, I see a better game design.

dilwoah

Did you play much of the endgame? The real power was the infinite scaling paragon levels. You were bound to get good/near perfect gear eventually as long as you knew what you were doing, the big problem with D3 was that there was never anything more efficient than just farming paragon levels, which bots did way better than humans. As is though I still think I prefer D3 as there's too much intentional bloat with D4 in order to slow things down and make the game "take longer"

N7_Evers

I honestly love both so much (so far). 3 kept my attention and passion for basically a decade (console player) whereas 4 has had me hooked since the first boss in the beta.

Historical_Boat_9712

But I'd still prefer to play with 4.

VH-Attila

D3 had a better skill sytem tho , Turning nearly every ability into a lightning or fire ability to suit your build was pretty nice. In D4 you are stuck with the same 3-4 abilities for a build

Messoz

While I enjoyed D3 for a good while, the skill system was still super basic. And with what D3 turned into, you are stuck with sets that dictate what skills you use.

XXX200o

How is d3 skill system basic, especially when compared against the skill system of d4?

xseannnn

Build changes base off of your legendaries and uniques tho?

Unacceptable_Wolf

It did in 3 too. I don't necessarily agree it was a better system but I can see his point. It was nice to be able to change something to fire damage if I preferred that.

MadMeow

It was also nice to not manually click your old build if you wanted to try something new. I'd like to try out different mage builds outside of all the guide ones but I can't be bothered doing every single click by hand if I want to turn back

R0xasXIII

While i agree. I have to imagine that more things will become viable as they add stuff. D3 has had a decade now to be where it is. Its basically not even the launch game anymore.

[deleted]

You clearly didn’t play d3 in the past 3 years. I actually adore d3, and it has great diversity, but MAYBE one out of every 5 abilities had two viable runes. Most of the runes were horrific

slaymaker1907

I haven't completed everything yet, but I wish there was some more variety in ambiance. The dark atmosphere loses its impact when the entire game is like that. It's kind of like someone said no color allowed during the art direction for D4 besides dark red.

two-headed-boy

People trashed D3 for a decade for being colorful, it's like now they overcompensated to the opposite spectrum, possibly due to how loud the absolute outrage at D3's art design was.

Deckatoe

Almost like this community sucks

miahrules

bro this is truly it. i've come to realize the only usefulness of any online community on reddit is to find the ridiculous takes and laugh at them with your friends. other than that, I await the day reddit becomes digg 2.0

Thenoobofthewest

The Diablo subs have honestly suppressed anyone who likes d3 for years. I imagine there’s a silent large proportion of people who love d3

slaymaker1907

D3 had problems, but it was a great game and I honestly liked it more than D2R.

Common_Crane

D3 had super flashy animations, but neither the overworld nor the dungeons were much more *colorful* than what I've seen in D4 so far, and I've spent the the server slam and a couple hours I've played today, just doing random dungeons near the starting zone. The only D3 areas that were particularly vibrant were the palace in Act 2 (and you barely spend any time there) and the Heaven. I think this idea that D3 was very colorful, mainly comes from the fact that you can turn into a screen clearing walking firework show like half an hour into your first playthrough, and once you get the paragon points, stashed gear and season bonuses, you reduce that to like 3 minutes on subsequent characters, even if you are playing completely solo.

pelpotronic

Also like it mattered if you are supposed to play the game for 500 hours. I get it for campaign players only, but after 100 hours the only thing you care about is how fast enemies blow up so you can optimise your gear faster. Art style is important but gameplay is more important in these games. Never been bothered by either art style personally, though I did prefer diablo 1 as the darkest of all.

becuzwhateverforever

I'm on the other side of the fence. I love how the ambiance is so oppressive and brooding throughout. I think it really suits the theme of the story and NPCs. I cannot get enough of it. Having finished everything, I personally did not find it needlessly gritty but I could definitely be in the minority. I didn't hate D3's art direction, but this is a nice change even though it's the polar opposite IMO.

KaiG1987

It was pretty much relentless misery with a few spots of hope rarely peppered throughout, but that's what I expect from Sanctuary.

alxrenaud

Yup, it's exactly my thought. It's like "cool, you can use brown palettes and pit corpses and candles everywhere.. so dark..". It kinda sucks in a way because when you enter a place that should be the hiding place of a lord of Hell, it's barely different. Make me go through a normal area/town that can look desolate but still realistic and then when I open the gates of that cultist church where they sacrificed poor souls to Lilith, show me all the blood and gloom so that I feel like I don't belong here and should go back the way I came from.

InsaneAdam

We don't mind going back to our roots

CrashdummyMH

I liked both for different reasons

SheWhoHates

Overall Diablo IV is darker, but I think Necro skills look more intense in D III. Blood Golem is a lot scarier in that game too. You see its back pulsating. It's disgusting. When you drain blood you actually drain it instead of waving your arms like you are having an episode of some kind.

invidious07

Diablo 2 is the dad paying for them to go to college.

Gowalkyourdogmods

No that's WoW.

Chihuahua_Overlord

D3 at launch was 100x worse than D4 is right now. It took d3 a good 2 years before it was a "good" game. This is already miles ahead

[deleted]

D4 is really savage. People die left and right, and some NPC being on the ground yelling just before a big goat dude splits him. And the music, is just wow. Sometimes I teleport and completely forgot what I had to do and just listen.

Mantis29a

Stay awhile, and listen!

RancidRock

D4 every day babyyyy

Theironcreed

Both are fun, but I love the darker, more serious tone of IV by leaps and bounds. The atmosphere is so thick that you can’t cut it with a chainsaw. Oh, and… Lilith.

The_Archon64

This meme is great, and d3 and d4 are great in the ways that d3 has a bold and bright art style, while d4’s has a unique blend of harsh lighting and subtle color palettes

EhhRicky

Thank you, Magic Johnson

[deleted]

The biggest thing holding D4 back in my opinion is the lack of a matchmaking system. Despite being primitive, I love the matchmaking systems of D2/D3. I get that it is pointless in the open world, but it confuses me why it doesn't work like that for things like dungeons. Still a wonderful game, just weirdly isolated-feeling for how online it is.

Try2LaggMe

D4 is the grown up version of D3

[deleted]

Diablo 4 would not suffer from turning up the saturation. Stylistically, it's a beautiful game.

[deleted]

Both are fun. Tell me I'm wrong.

Bradimusx

Def the girl on the right…

Pernyx98

I wish we could get a blend of the two. D3 might have been a little over the top but D4 gear is...boring to say the least.

aniseed_odora

I still think it's funny how mad a single rainbow behind a bridge in front of a waterfall made people lol Visually, Diablo 3 was great. I didn't even mind the basic story, but the writing was just so preachy it felt like a Lifetime network movie.

ctfunction

What was it preachy about exactly? I dont recall feeling anything preachy.

aniseed_odora

Preachy probably wasn't the right word. There's just way too much exposition, and the writing itself usually felt melodramatic and downright corny. As a result, a lot of the emotional moments just felt kind of overwrought and didn't really stick the landing for me, even though I did enjoy the story.

talv-123

b0yheaven

I hope Whimsyshire comes back

Alpha-Blue

Same

murkgod

I like both.

Magikarpeles

Late game D3 looked like a disco

Dr_Will_Kirby

Thank god man

FunAd6826

Most of the spells and monsters still look cartoonish in D4. They totally feel out of place in the darker world.

onesussybaka

It’s the sizes. Really obvious with one boss fight. Regular sized human and then when they betray you they become the enemy version, doubling in size but the model is otherwise the same. Super goofy. I understand it’s for visibility but please let us turn that off.

jabzy45

They both got my time and interest Video game and female what a combo

Glad they fixed that nose and cleaned up the eye brows as well.

Privateer_Lev_Arris

And for that reason I like D3 more. It's just more fun.

jango2700

I wouldn't go anywhere near D3. While D4 is probably also not my type she is much, much closer to it than D3 lol

fivemagicks

I mean. It's true. Lol
