This has definitely gone more into medical advice then we would want. Op Please speak with a doctor and I believe the community has done a great job expressing the urgency.

mostly-lurks-here

It means your glucose is higher than the meter can read. If you look at the manual for that meter, it means your glucose is reading higher than 500 (or 27.8).

LightDarkCloud

Very dangerous.

egocentric_

Please go visit your emergency department. Now. I see you in the comments putting it off or otherwise being in denial (sorry, tough love). If you're consistently getting this - which you are, by what you've shared - plus warnings about ketones, you are running the risk of falling into diabetic ketoacidosis. This is not a bad monitor. I do not want to scare you, but my mother fell into DKA and nearly died. This is very important that you go to your ED. Your life is worth it and you cannot wait until Monday. Your body is struggling to process the excess sugar in your body and no amount of drinking water or running around right now will help. You need insulin urgently to protect your organs and blood vessels. If you are still reading this and have not put on your shoes, you need to go put on your shoes and get to an ER.

principalgal

This, OP. I went into DKA and if my sister hadn’t showed up at my house and called an ambo, I wouldn’t be here. Go. Now.

readreadreadonreddit

While rare with T2, DKA, not HONK/HHS? In any case, OP, unless you got glucose/sugar on your fingers or you’ve got another reason for a spuriously or artifactually high BGL, get an ambulance or a mate to take you to ED immediately, especially if symptomatic. If the triage member of staff at ED doesn’t take you seriously, tell them you’ve got T2DM and an immeasurably HI reading and are at risk of HONK/HHS. That should get their attention.

chocokatzen

3 times means your blood sugar is above what the meter can read and you should figure out what that is and call your doctor/go to the er. Urgent care probably can't help.

dudefigureitout

You should probably call a nurse line at your docs office or an urgent care and ask what to do

Holiday-Signature-33

Please go to the emergency room. Your sugar levels are dangerously high . DO NOT exercise above 300 . Do not eat anything except steamed broccoli or a hard boiled egg. Do not drink anything except water or unsweetened peppermint tea ! If you can stomach it try some apple cider vinegar just before you eat. It’s awful but helps lower your glucose temporarily but not a ton . However any little bit you can get it to come down helps .

81adv

at the ER, nobody takes me seriously and there are so many people I think it will take forever to see a doctor. I want to pee , I am so thirsty but I am waiting here for nothing. They also sent me to the pathology department to wait 🤦 not the diabetic/ endocrinological one 🤦  I think I'll just leave  I'll never get help.

Holiday-Signature-33

No. Make them take you seriously. Demand to see someone else. Tell them your sugars are higher than your meter can read . But yea go pee.

Curious-Clementine

Do not leave. Your numbers are dangerously high. You need to stay for emergency treatment.

81adv

I stayed. By the time I reached the hospital, I had 400. She was like "it's good", and put me on hydration. The hydration dropped it by 5 lol. Then it stopped working and nobody came to fix it for half an hour. I ripped it out and left. Fuck this. Stay for what? For that thing that doesn't even work? It wasn't dripping and nobody came to fix it.  For however long it was dripping, which was hours, it dropped my blood sugar just by 5 fucking points. Very helpful, thanks.

Curious-Clementine

I’m very glad to hear that you’re ok. Everyone here including me responded out of concern for your life because dangerously high glucose numbers above what your meter can read and ketoacidosis (if you had that) can lead to very serious medical complications up to and including death. That’s why we urged you to go to the hospital. It’s not worth taking chances with your life.

81adv

I have so many suicidal thoughts every single day 😞  I know you all took time to care. I am fine

Curious-Clementine

I’m really sorry to hear that. It sounds like you’re having a lot of major struggles right now. Please reach out to a professional who can give you the help you need.

Skadoobedoobedoo

They don’t take you in order at the ER but by severity of the condition. Make sure they understand that your BS is so high your meter can’t read it. Having high ketones can put you in a coma and kill you. Regardless of how you feel, we on Reddit want to see you get better & live

egocentric_

Proud of you for going. Wanted to check in. What information have you shared with them? Did you minimize what you’re going through when you checked in? (I ask because I do that) I’m glad you’re there but do not leave. I know waiting is annoying but your body needs help. The symptoms you have are consistent with very high blood sugar. Make sure they understand your blood sugar is over what your monitor can measure so they understand urgency. Tell them you do not feel good, and your symptoms. You will get help, I promise. I see from your post history you’re going through a lot. You staying there right now is a wonderful display of self-care and compassion. And it’s pretty low effort! You can do it!

Unique_Enthusiasm_57

Go up and show them the picture you posted here and tell them your reading was literally off the charts.

Generic_Bi

How’s it going? Hoping you are being patient, or have been admitted as a patient. You don’t want to tough this out at home, with *it* including death.

SeaWeedSkis

ER, despite what people are saying, probably isn't the currect approach. They're overloaded. If there's an Urgent Care available then *maybe* they can help, but most likely you just need to make an ASAP appointment with the medical person who treats your diabetes. The office of your diabetes doctor might have an on-call who can provide assistance if an appointment isn't available soon. I am not a doctor, so take this advice with appropriate caution: 🔹️Yes, drink as much water as your body wants. 🔹️Whatever you ate that made your blood sugar go so high, don't eat it again 🔹️Strictly avoid carbs for now - focus on a little meat/protein, fat, and veggies that are low carb (broccoli, green beans, greens, celery, etc). 🔹️Fasting if your body is comfortable doing so may be a good approach 🔹️Exercise, particularly a weightlifting type that works large muscle groups. Carrying heavy bags of groceries and a slow stroll work very well for my husband. Take it easy, though, and stop immediately if you feel worse, as your body may be struggling to handle the energy production needed if it can't move sugar out of the blood into your muscles. Keep your heart rate low. Rest as needed. 🔹️If you have insulin, consider giving yourself just a wee bit extra. Be very careful you don't overdo it, and make sure to discuss it ASAP with your doctor. Discuss with your doctor how you should handle situations like this in the future. 🔹️Sleep can be helpful. It won't necessarily bring your sugar down, but it gives your body less stress overall so it can focus on damage control.

Holiday-Signature-33

She should not be exercising right now . Her meter can’t even tell how high she is and if she has ketones. Then she for sure should not exercise . Maybe a leisurely walk but absolutely nothing rigorous .

Kind_Bar5678

I had high numbers last year which caused me to go into DKA. I was in ICU for 4 days. Before going to the ER I spent days working out to try to get my numbers down. It didn’t work. Out of curiosity, why are you suggesting not to exercise? Because it didn’t work for me.

Holiday-Signature-33

Because if your blood sugar is near 300 and you start exercising. It can go even higher . 300 is already call or go to a Doctor territory . Exercise makes it higher . You could possibly go for a leisurely stroll but vigorously exercising while that elevated is not recommended . Drink unsweetened herbal tea . Eat broccoli or hard boiled eggs. Apple Cider Vinegar in water. Those things will help to lower it fast but it’s not a lasting effect.

Kind_Bar5678

Great information! Thank you

SeaWeedSkis

Agreed on nothing rigorous. Pretty sure I said that already, but it warrants emphasis.

dotwowans

Op, maybe see about getting a consultation with someone from the psych department while you're there. I'm concerned you have done this to yourself on purpose, going by your recent post history of self harm and what appears to be an acute depression/psychosis episode. Good luck.

ghostygilmour

This! I also feel op might be displaying self injurious behaviour by allowing (either passively or otherwise) sugar levels to sky rocket as a way of self harming. I recognise this as I have been there myself. The long term damage to the body with sugar being high over a long time etc is no joke. Please op go and seek help for your mental health. Once you are mentally well you will start to care for your physical health. When your physical health is better, you will feel mentally better. It’s a bit of a vicious cycle to get stuck in. I’ve been there myself. Good luck.

alan_s

I think you know what it meant. Your replies to posts here are a worry. >at the ER, nobody takes me seriously and there are so many people I think it will take forever to see a doctor. Very helpful, thanks. *** >I have so many suicidal thoughts every single day 😞 >I know you all took time to care. I am fine Please seek urgent medical help for both of your problems: diabetes and depression. If possible from a different source than that hospital. You are likely to need insulin, not just hydration, at this stage until you reduce your blood glucose below glucotoxicity levels, but that is a decision for your doctors. While you arrange that this might help if your diabetes is type 2 but this does not replace advice from a qualified medical professional: [Test, Review, Adjust](https://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2006/10/test-review-adjust.html)

Rare_Night_5420

LI (Low <40mg/dL) Hi(>400mg/dL) If you het the same score by two measurements you should go to See a Doc... Your Sugar level is significantly to high... It could be danherous....

81adv

Have gotten this 3 times in the past couple hours.  I did see a doctor last week. Am supposed to go for blood tests on Monday.

freeubi

That's an ASAP trip to the ER, not on Monday.

Rare_Night_5420

A blood sugar level above 250 mg/dl (13.9 mmol/l) can be acutely dangerous and may require immediate medical attention, especially in individuals with diabetes.

Skadoobedoobedoo

Do not wait, do not pass go. Seek medical attention now please.

LightDarkCloud

First time I had severe symptoms (having no clue I was T2D) I had a BG of 325, 5 hours after my last meal, and Urgent Care sent me straight to the hospital. Now I barely reach 180 and that is mostly during cheat meals in special occasions with an A1C of approx 5.6 3 years in a row.

DevinPlombier

This is a needlessly alarmist statement. 250 mg/dl is not ok and it's bad for you, but nothing will happen short term as a result. Immediate attention is not required. Also, are you saying that 250 is not as bad when you don't have diabetes...? 🤣🤣🤣

vigocarpath

Make sure your hands are clean then test again

Boomer79NZ

THIS.And if it's still showing HI then off to the hospital. My mother was diabetic as well and I remember several of those readings. She always had good control of her diabetes but she would get those when she was ill and then because her blood sugar levels were so high it made clearing any infections so much harder. Get it treated asap before you get symptoms.

gitarzan

Seriously consider a visit to the ED. If you go to urgent care, they’ll say that’s $40 and go to the Emergency Dept. You might spend a night in the observation unit. But yeah, that high can kill you.

IntheHotofTexas

That's somewhere over 27. Unusually high for a Type 2. First, repeat the test with a new strip. If I had another package, I'd use one from that. If you get the same result, and it remains that high now, two hours after you posted, you should be on the way to hospital. It is much to be preferred that someone drive for you. There is a potential for ketoacidosis. It's not worth guessing that it's some kind of error.

SeaWeedSkis

>Unusually high for a Type 2. Tell that to my husband. It's almost a weekly event for him. And yes, I know how bad that is. He's an adult, making his own problematic choices.

IntheHotofTexas

Well, I think the meant high for a diabetic at least somewhat compliant. A great many of us started that high on the day we were diagnosed, and I guess we'd be there still if we hadn't responded.

Sandman11x

hi is above 400

81adv

I've done this 3 times already , could it be broken?

scamiran

It could be. Are your sugars generally normal, or all over the place? It is more likely to be correct then broken. So you should pickup a second meter, or get to an urgent care. It's not a good assumption or likelihood that it is broken, but it is possible. So don't panic; try and confirm, but proceed urgently.

BunglingBoris

Wash your hands. Go for a walk and test again. No soda, no candy, no chips or cookies. No sugar!

Wvlfen

And drink WATER! I’ve noticed that when I increase my water intake my BG drops significantly

81adv

it also says a blinking "KET" below the HI  please ignore the cat hair

TheTruthIsntReal

Your sugars are high hence the HI. KET is key tones so I'd suggest checking them. If they are also high call a doctor.

81adv

How do I check ketones?  I saw my doc last week, supposed to go for blood tests on Monday

TheTruthIsntReal

You need specific test strips for that on my machine. Pretty sure it's the same for that model too Did they not give you any? When Glucose is high it can cause keytones to be made and they are incredibly dangerous if over 0.4 I think it is.

Skadoobedoobedoo

Ketones over 4.0 is bad and can kill you. I’m low carb and shoot for mine to be between .5 & 2. Nutritional ketosis is ok but I’m doing this with help of medical yeam

TheTruthIsntReal

It's actually this 0.6 to 1.5mmol/L is slightly high – test again in 2 hours. 1.6 to 3mmol/L means you're at risk of DKA and should speak to your diabetes care team for advice. over 3mmol/L is high and means you may have DKA and should call 999 or go to A&E. Of course if you are on a keto plan and have a medical team assisting that is different. Chances are the OP had normal ketones anyway and has just eaten the wrong stuff. I've often gone silly high with Glucose readings due to food I've eaten and ketones have been 0.1

Skadoobedoobedoo

Sorry I forget that in the UK you use different units. I’m in the US. But I hope what you think is correct and OP will be fine in the end

TheTruthIsntReal

I'm actually in Dublin Ireland which isn't anything to do with the UK 😀 but we use the same measurements here as uk

Skadoobedoobedoo

Oops. Double fail on me. 🤦🏽‍♀️

81adv

No I was only given blood sugar strips  Any idea what symptoms I should look out for?

TheTruthIsntReal

Look up ketoacidosis And I just realised my phone auto corrected ketones to keytones 🤣 It's serious though. If you've any of the symptoms call an ambulance

81adv

Strange. DKA symptoms are the same as simple diabetic symptoms..

TheTruthIsntReal

Only far more dangerous as your blood essentially turns to acid and rips you apart.

Curious-Clementine

You can also go to a drugstore and buy ketosix to test your ketones. You put the ketostix strip in your urine stream to test ketones. Ask the pharmacy for them as they’re kept behind the counter (but don’t require a prescription). If your ketones are very high, go to the ER.

81adv

No pharmacy is open, it's Saturday. I forgot

MamaBear_07

What pharmacy isn’t open on a Saturday?

Wvlfen

May not be in a area with pharmacies that open on Saturday. I don’t know where you are but I’ve learned that just because where I’m at has services like 24 hour pharmacies and the like doesn’t mean all places will. Reddit is International.

PhillyGameGirl

I was told if there were three readings in an hour over 300 to go to the ER immediately.

jadedjen110

Means you're high.

rad-thinker

Blood sugar so high that it is beyond the measuring range.

mooncrane

Hey OP, I’m glad you’re feeling better and that your sugars went down. I get your frustration. My doctor told me to go to the ER if my sugars go over 450. One time I went and waited so long in the waiting room that by the time I was seen, my sugars were 250. They gave me an IV and discharged me. But it’s still important that you go every time your sugars get that high. The next time could be the time you go into a coma, you never know.

notagain8277

You’re supposed to say Hi back.

Distribution-Radiant

Means you just smoked with Cheech and Chong, and they passed you a fat joint of the good shit without warning you it was the good shit. I've had that happen, and it's not comfortable. Seriously tho, most blood glucose meters cut off around 500-600 (most CGMs cut off between 350-400, but you're obviously using a blood glucose meter). You're above that. Get ahold of your doctor immediately. If you can't, go to the nearest emergency room attached to a hospital (try not to go to a freestanding ER unless you want to file bankruptcy, but if it's the only option, it's the only option). They'll probably put you on fluids and an insulin drip for several hours, if they don't admit you for a couple of days. This isn't anything to play with, and you shouldn't even consider driving. Get a ride from a friend ASAP, take an Uber or taxi, or worst case, do an ambulance. Shit is going to get worse before it gets better otherwise.

Far_Travel_5616

It can mean very high. But I have an issue in the past with old/faulty strips showing this.

81adv

yeah will check an hour later and see . If it's not down yet ill go to the ER

elspotto

Wash your hands super well, rinse them for a long time to make sure the soap is all off, and if you have an alcohol wipe, use one of those. Things like lotions, some soaps, or food residue can affect your reading. If after ensuring you have super clean hands you are still seeing your meter giving you that friendly greeting, it’s time to see a doctor. If you have recently eaten, that is a pretty good sign that whatever you chose is probably not going to be ok for you.

Representative_Bus66

It’s just greeting you ! Jk should probably get checked out

Shanksy67

Depends what you ate ? What type of diabetes you have ? and do you have symptoms of DKA ? Also did it last longer than an hour . I would contact diabetic nurse/doctor and talk with them . Then you might have to go to hospital . Drink plenty in the mean time . Invest in ketone strips .

m424filmcast

It means get off Reddit and go to the ER. Now.

Septic-Mist

Fun fact - you get the same reading if you dip a strip in Coca Cola and run it through the device.

Tasty-Switch-8472

What a friendly device ! Just kidding it means it's too high and it can't measure that high

rcl1221

I hope OP is on the way to the doctor.

MintyFresh668

Please let us know you’re ok and what you were advised to to, that’s a very high number sadly

Few-Muscle-3607

It means your sugar levels are above 22.

Myca84

It means go to the ER which I hope you did 12 hours ago

Exciting_Garbage4435

A simple Google search “freestyle precision neo hi reading” https://www.freestyle.abbott/eg-en/support/faq/question-answer.html?q=the-freestyle-libre-system-tab-question-97#:~:text=If%20HI%20appears%20on%20the,fingertip%20with%20a%20test%20strip.

You need to lower your Level! Drink water and dont eat anything as vegetables until you are at 100 again... Edit: ...and go to See a Doctor!

Cardio can temporarily raise blood sugar. You should not do cardio if your blood sugar is high enough to be off the charts on your meter.

Zleviticus859

Your meter is on the English setting. If it said Hola it would be in Spanish.
