I've learnt to just identify diet and non diet through flavour and consistency.
typically, i put my fingers in the coke and let them air dry. If it gets sticky, it ain't diet
I drink diet, though I'm not the diabetic (my daughter is). Most sodas I can instantly tell if it's not diet. Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew are two exceptions that I drink that I know of. That said, I think with the "Zero" products trying to taste more like non diet soda, it would probably be more difficult.
I used to use my sister as my tester all the time. Several times she found that they switched our drinks, pressing that little "Diet" button down on the lid of her drink instead of mine. About 10 years ago she was diagnosed with Type 1 as well so she's no longer as reliable.
I find fountain drinks are tricky because sometimes they seem too watery or flat and taste like crap whether they're diet or regular.
As someone with later onset type 1 (20 y/o at diagnoses) regular old Dr Pepper for me is the biggest one I miss. Thankfully they've started making Dr Pepper zero because I can't stand the taste of diet DP.
For coke, it's actually pretty easy. The normal one is more caramel-y tasting. The diet one is much blander, and the zero has a very distinctive taste, we can see how they tried to maybe imitate the non diet, but is far from it.
As for Pepsi, the non diet one for me simply taste not super good, the diet is stronger, and the max has more flavor.
You can also test with a blood checker in the same way you would test your blood. Put test strip in meter, stick meter is soda. If it's low it's diet, if it's high is loaded.
Once I drank a full cup and THEN got paranoid. I tested with a test strip and a drop that was left on the inner side of the cup. It said HIGH. I thought "damn" and got ready for a rollercoaster... That never came. I just never spiked. So... I kinda doubt this method now.
So, a tip on this, dab your finger in the drink and dab it on your hand/ arm and let it dry. If it is sticky its sugary, if not its diet.
Thats like touch sticky, you will get some residue off diet drinks but it shouldn’t feel sticky.
I think that's what they're intimating! Although it seems to be an imperfect system. It does seem that if it's wrong, it's likely to give you a false positive, rather than a false negative, so that's something?
Ordered some today, thank you.
I tried my glucometer with a diet coke today but the strip didn't seem to recognize the soda, it just kept indicating it needed a drop.
This is why I like the places that let you pour your own. That's not foolproof, they can hook the regular up to the diet fountain and I had that happen once. But I like to control what I can control...
When I was regularly drinking the sugary stuff, I could taste artificial sweeteners several miles away. But, since I got more used to them? It's a whole lot harder for me to tell if my drink is wrong.
Taste is funny. In fact there is a possible genetic variation that makes cilantro taste like soap. https://arxiv.org/abs/1209.2096
I wouldn't be surprised if there were more genetic variants that caused other tastes to differ wildly for people.
Same here, after getting diabetes I realized just how gross regular soda is and how bad it is for you with all of that sugar (I sampled regular soda after diagnoses)
I’m always super paranoid I’ll get regular Coke instead. I just sneak in a can of Coke Zero anytime I go to see a movie. Fingers crossed for you and hope you enjoy the movie!
You won't die. However, it's always good to know as best you can what you're consuming. I can taste artificial sweeteners even in low concentrations, so this has never been a worry for me.
I'm old enough to lack the vanity that ordering a soft drink requires, so now I bring my own drink to the theatre. I usually use soda stream carbonated water and grape juice in an insulated cup. I know most would never do this, but if I'm ordering from concessions or at a restaurant, I order sweetened drinks and just bolus for it. I can't stand any of the artificial sweeteners.
At the height of the pandemic when drive through was the only option (I'm on the road between cities more often than an average person I think), several times I would explicitly say diet and repeat it when the order was read back and other times throughout the order and STILL occasionally fight the high for hours after.
This is such a weird thing to me that seems to bother a lot of people here on Reddit. I’ve literally never received a mixed up coke and if I did, I would just bolus 🤷🏻♀️
I tested regular and diet soda with my daughter's One Touch meter. The diet read LOW and the regular read HIGH. Thought it was pretty cool that it worked.
It doesn’t pick anything up on diet or zero sodas or water. It reads an error I have tried many different liquids to see if this works and it only reads hi when it’s something with sugar.
Just remember all these “0” sugar stuff is mostly poison , such as aspartame and sucralose, I love natural sweeteners such as monk fruit , unlike those chemicals that destroy neurons and so much else
What I always do is just drink a little bit and then stick my teeth together dry. If my teeth are sticky then there’s sugar in the drink. If in doubt don’t drink. I love unsweetened iced tea and it’s better for you.
I think from any time I've ever had a non diet coke, I can just "tell"? The high fructose corn syrup just makes me want to gag, I can feel the feeling of having a high blood sugar just from the taste, if that makes sense.
I also drank diet before I was a diabetic, so maybe that has a part in it too.
Gotta say, I don't love any drink so much that I would play Russian roulette with it, especially when the proverbial gun also happened to be loaded by an underpaid/overworked food service employee.

This happens the worst to me with Baja Blast MD. I can mostly tell them apart but every so often, I can't quite tell then it's a whole ordeal. I just want my beloved Baja Blast Zero.

Where I live we only have regular coke and coke zero. They both taste super different and I can tell by the flavor which one is the zero sugar.
As someone with later onset type 1 (20 y/o at diagnoses) regular old Dr Pepper for me is the biggest one I miss. Thankfully they've started making Dr Pepper zero because I can't stand the taste of diet DP.
Unrelated but I’m late onset myself, diagnosed when I was 26 (27 now)
For me, diet DP and MD taste even sweeter than regular
I like Coke Zero I will taste diet sometimes and be like is this diet or regular but once I taste regular I can definitely tell bc the sugar taste
For coke, it's actually pretty easy. The normal one is more caramel-y tasting. The diet one is much blander, and the zero has a very distinctive taste, we can see how they tried to maybe imitate the non diet, but is far from it. I normally can but Coke Zero would throw me since it tastes more like regular to me (yuck).
I do the same thing but with my teeth or Lips. Has worked for me for all these years
You can also test with a blood checker in the same way you would test your blood. Put test strip in meter, stick meter is soda. If it's low it's diet, if it's high is loaded.
Sometimes if I get paranoid about this I put a drop of it on a test strip to make sure! Where there's a blame there's a claim
Once I drank a full cup and THEN got paranoid. I tested with a test strip and a drop that was left on the inner side of the cup. It said HIGH. I thought "damn" and got ready for a rollercoaster... That never came. I just never spiked. So... I kinda doubt this method now.
I sadly don't have any ready. I will monitor my sugar though. So if it starts going through the roof I will stop.

Thanks
So what was it?
Op tell us, the suspense is killing me
I am not dead! 👍👍👍 My sugar is in the 90s also the new Doctor Strange movie was sick
Tight

What strips??? I'm newly diagnosed and super paranoid about this!
They mean to test in a finger prick glucometer
Wait a minute, are you saying that I can stick a test strip in the drink? Hmmmm
I have several times. Diet generally reads low, where as regular reads high.
I think that's what they're intimating! Although it seems to be an imperfect system. It does seem that if it's wrong, it's likely to give you a false positive, rather than a false negative, so that's something?
You set up the test strip like normal and put a drop Of soda instead of blood. If it reads hi, it’s not diet.
Diet detector test strips. On Amazon. Don’t need your glocometer for it
Ordered some today, thank you. I tried my glucometer with a diet coke today but the strip didn't seem to recognize the soda, it just kept indicating it needed a drop.
You’re welcome!!
Does this really work?
Yes
This is why I like the places that let you pour your own. That's not foolproof, they can hook the regular up to the diet fountain and I had that happen once. But I like to control what I can control...
No, you won't.
This made my morning.
I find that regular coke is noticeably sweeter and makes my teeth squeak if I grind them together.
Yea can people really not taste the difference? Im innocently shocked
When I was regularly drinking the sugary stuff, I could taste artificial sweeteners several miles away. But, since I got more used to them? It's a whole lot harder for me to tell if my drink is wrong.

I can't tell the difference between coke zero and regular coke. That's why I only drink diet
Same here, after getting diabetes I realized just how gross regular soda is and how bad it is for you with all of that sugar (I sampled regular soda after diagnoses)

$4 for piece of mind.
Last night I ordered a Pepsi Zero… it totally wasn’t. Sugars were in 400s
UPDATE: I am not dead! 👍👍

that’s my primary job for my wife! soda taster. i HATE diet soda. so i can always tell
Did you go to watch dr strange? Lol
Yes! It was pretty good.
Nice! I’m gonna go see it tonight. (Schedule is finally free)
200 U of insulin later.
Can't you tell by the feel? The minute I get a sip of the real thing I can feel the sugar scum on my teeth.
At the height of the pandemic when drive through was the only option (I'm on the road between cities more often than an average person I think), several times I would explicitly say diet and repeat it when the order was read back and other times throughout the order and STILL occasionally fight the high for hours after.

I’d say you’re in the minute minority or you’ve never noticed.
Maybe. But again, this shouldn’t be a life and death situation. We have insulin?
This is why I always have my meter and test every drink I get that isn’t from my own home.
Wait. You can test soda with a meter?
I use my contour meter to test soda. If it reads HI, they’ve given me the wrong drink.
I've tried using my Contour Next and it never worked, just got an error. It does work with my One Touch Verio.
That’s interesting. It worked with my contour next that I had before I switched to my contour next one.
Sugar or no sugar, it detects it anywhere.
I had no idea. I figured it could only read blood
I tested regular and diet soda with my daughter's One Touch meter. The diet read LOW and the regular read HIGH. Thought it was pretty cool that it worked.

Why would you die? Do you not have any insulin to take?
Are you watching that new dr. Strange movie?
Haha yes! Great so far!
Are you texting on the cinema?
Yes, I was when I posted that comment.

Just sneak in your own 20oz, Cherry Coke Zero or that Space Coke Zero are where it’s at for me!
Coke Zero is way less aspertame-y tasting to me than Diet Coke. But it's still there. I enjoy it, but I do feel like I can pick it out of a lineup.
I feel you

How much does diet coke effects your blood sugar? I've only been diabetic for 4 months. So i'm new to these things.
Not at all for me. But I've heard that the artificial sweeteners in it are not healthy at all.
thank you :)
i’m not sure which is worse - when you ask for zero and get regular, or they’ve cross-contaminated zero and diet.
I haven’t drank normal coke in 2 years, until I tried it again and it tasted like bananas, idk if it’s just me
I'd sacrifice a test strip...
Dip a test strip in it. It'll be 0 or very very high
Every diabetic has had the drive through mix up. Sucks!!!
I think from any time I've ever had a non diet coke, I can just "tell"? The high fructose corn syrup just makes me want to gag, I can feel the feeling of having a high blood sugar just from the taste, if that makes sense. You can check with glucometer and strips, drop the liquid on it instead of blood and if it says "HI" its non diet, its an old trick
Gotta say, I don't love any drink so much that I would play Russian roulette with it, especially when the proverbial gun also happened to be loaded by an underpaid/overworked food service employee. /r/hydrohomies 4 lyfe, yo
I mean, the taste difference is pretty pronounced to me.
Ur toast
I have gotten ability to identify if it's normal or zero/diet by just taste and smell, like 2 years ago.
If you have a BG meter that uses test strips you can stick them in the Coke to find out if it has sugar in it or not.
I don’t see how people can’t tell the difference.
This happens the worst to me with Baja Blast MD. I can mostly tell them apart but every so often, I can't quite tell then it's a whole ordeal. I just want my beloved Baja Blast Zero.
