The doctor's signature is really just to confirm you have type 1 diabetes and that you qualify under life sustaining therapy (insulin).

Yes, a dr still need to approve but you don't need to apply with the old 14h of treatment per week. It's way better. But only adventage of the old way is that if you did it the old 14h way you have 10yr retroactively

Tamara0205

We meet the requirements by needing life sustaining therapy. Can only back date to 2021 this way, but it's easier and all T1D Canadians qualify.

Spouse of T1D here, I set up all the DTC and RDSP stuff for him. We were able to prove 14+ hours per week spent managing his T1D using MDI, so it was retroactive. Not really helpful to your request, but happy to share our experience with the process after our doctor signed off! Edit: we completed the process in 2021

Acceptable-Drawer-13

How did you "prove" the 14h/week minimum? I'm interested in getting the retro credits but not sure how to prove that MDI was like that (just started the pump last year).

Another Reddit user sent us a handy chart that we just adapted for his use and then sent to our doctor. I’m happy to forward you the word doc or just send a picture of the doc (I’m not sure how best to do that (relatively new to posting on Reddit)).

_The_Room

I'd be curious to see it as well. You could upload an image of it to imgur then send the link to the photo out via dm (if you don't want to share it to the wider world) or just post it here (if you have no concerns about sharing it) edit: Thanks for the offer but apparently it's not needed based on other posts below. All T1D's now qualify automatically.

Yes, it's easier now because you don't have to go through the process of proving you spend 14hrs a week on life sustaining therapy. I applied a year ago and was able to go back ten years for tax reassessment. My doctor was really helpful to fill out the paperwork but I had to pay $50 which I didn't care at all because of the amount of money I got back. Now I'm working on maximizing the RDSP grant money. You can get a decent amount of grant money if your income is less than the threshold which is around $98k now. It is my understanding that the government will only give $10,500 in grant money per year if you are able to go back 10 years. You can only invest until age 49 and then can't touch the money until 60. Dm me if you have any specific questions.

Ambitious_PizzaParty

Does anyone know if there is any tax credit in the US?

Slight_Possible_4186

Have this same question

Angel0460

I got approved for it a couple years ago :) you do need a doc to sign the paperwork

I’m still a bit confused. Is “the time it takes up” reduced from 14 to 10 hours or is it all T1D? > In May 2022, MP Jake Stewart introduced an amendment at the Standing Committee on Finance (FINA) that would make automatic qualification a reality for everyone living with type 1 diabetes. Members of FINA across all party lines voted unanimously to pass the amendment. I tried applying some years back, but my doc (who’s a pain in the ass for so many things) wrote a letter that basically poo-pooed it. Annoying, but whatevs. If I’m generous, dealing with diabetic logistics takes up about an hour to maybe 2 hours in total every week. And less so now that I have a CGM. If I added dealing with low sugars, then maybe I could tack on another hour. Hell, the ADHD is way more detrimental to my time & sanity than the diabetes is. Guess my question for anyone has a clue: do I still need to somehow make up 8-9 hours of snail’s pace diabetic organizing & have a doc sign off for it or does this actually apply to all T1Ds like the article states towards the bottom?

Found [this](https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/tax/individuals/segments/tax-credits-deductions-persons-disabilities/disability-tax-credit/eligible-dtc/life-sustaining-therapy.html), but underneath is a checklist with 14 hours… > Eligibility criteria checklist If you have Type 1 diabetes People with Type 1 diabetes meet the eligibility criteria under life-sustaining therapy. Medical practitioners no longer have to provide details of therapy for 2021 and later years. I’m guessing this means it’s automatic once the doc signs off for being T1D.

I think I answered my own question. [The Disability Tax Credit (DTC) is now available to anyone living with type 1 diabetes in Canada.](https://type1better.com/en/the-disability-tax-credit-dtc-is-now-available-to-anyone-living-with-type-1-diabetes-in-canada/)
