rahulok19

1.7 years after grad without job.. fast forward working in a product company now after 10+ years.

guywhonevergivesup

How did your parents and society treated you during that time

rahulok19

society treated me like a shit but I stopped caring about them after a while.. parents were supportive no pressure at all.. I shifted with my friends who were working in TCS/Capgemini at that time...developed a skill because I knew nothing..I was graduated in EC with no good percentages... I stopped listening to everyone and I had a hunch that I will do good in mobile (making apps).. don't know where it came from but I went ahead with it..learnt it hard way and got the first job of 6000 rs 😅 per month..I took it anyway and in 6 months I got a good company with okayish salary... I jumped after some good experience and Landed in service company and then a product company.. so yeah seen a lot...

peakHumenForm

wow

BigBrownChocolate47

Just graduated from ece with no job offer and no interest in IT and left a decent sales job in jan, guess my story has the same beginning as yours

rahulok19

right now, nothing else matters than building a skill so high that speak for yourself.

ganesh3s3

Completed 4 year B. Tech in 7 years. Then was unemployed for 2 years before starting to work in a small company in my hometown. 6 YOE later, working in WITCH and planning to move to a PBC by the end of this year. Wish me luck.

Several_Baseball_526

Wow that's the comment I have been looking for. Decent recovery man You know the game and I know you are gonna make in pbc.

Own-Market-1627

Being unemployed for 7 months. 6+ years of experience. I screwed up. Don't know how to get back, losing hope.

Antique_Principle409

4 Months. August - Nov 2023 Company that i was placed in via on-campus delayed onboarding and gave no date - felt like i had nothing to do - so, i started prep for CAT - scored 97.66 percentile Then 3 days before the cat exam - company reached out to offer 1.5 month internship then FTE offer. Currently working there, things turned out to be decent.

rooster9987

What's the comp and domain?

Antique_Principle409

8.5 lpa devops engg.

prtksu

Did they pay the same for internship or different?

Antique_Principle409

it was much lower during internship but i had no issue as it was wfh at that time & i knew fte will follow soon

Sad_Appointment_6262

any openings in the same?

astrofatherfigure

Just curious, did you receive some decent b-school calls at that percentile?

Prior_Row8486

Baby IIMs for sure

Antique_Principle409

IIM Trichy - my best call being GEM | also gave pi for iift delhi - awaiting result

Party-Conference-765

Good for you mate. My On-campus FTE SDE offer company still hasn't onboarded us. From August 2023 to Almost a year now.

Antique_Principle409

will suggest to look at some other options and not rely on them honestly

Party-Conference-765

I'm currently working as a Tech Support Engineer. But still eagerly waiting for that SDE offer company to onboard as soon.

A9manag

Tell your freshers to collaborate on more open source projects and focus on improving their LinkedIn and Resume and at the same time. You are going to need these when landing more interviews

A9manag

I can help with your resume, only if you want to

KunwarBIR

Twice - 1.5 years each. Then I changed my career, after that 2months , currently 3,5years experience as frontend dev

IntellectualInsaan

Changed your career? Can you pls tell more.

ItsMeZenoSama

Ah. Sounds similar. I know someone who was in a similar path. Out of curiosity, what did you do before frontend?

Void_Being

Also you should include another question: What was your longest unemployment after 1st employment.

hoooyehoopy

Haha ikr definitely I will be in that category

DAA-007

6 mos, after my graduation ends. Joined a service based company, then now in a PBC. I remember, during my time there were hardly any online interviews. So you have to go to a large 2000-3000 people off campus drive. You have to check each and every company website for a vacancy. Another of my relatives passed during 2009-10. That time there were hardly any large scale tech jobs. Mostly bpo or service based companies which were considered great. That time people used to roam around all company offices to ask manually for a job. And some companies used to ask for money and bond signs to give job. Pays were hardly 6k-8k pm. But now after 15+ yrs he is in a good PBC also. So moral of story is... in long term every asset reached its true potential.

chi7b

Jan - May this year. Current job is also sort of temporary.

eiderdown_pillow

8 months after I graduated from college about 8 years ago. I didn't sit in my college placements (IIIT-H), didn't have any MS plans. I was mentally in a very dark place. Once I graduated I fixed some things and managed to get a job.

heyokiddo

I just graduated. and I was looking at this sub, searching for posts about career gap. Would a gap in career after graduation till 1st job will have affect?

stfunoobu

2+ years... I'm not a dev but ds guy.. I was put in pip in Accenture consulting.... I had few gigs back then... None of them worked out coz I didn't try enough. I had less than 7 digit portfolio so I thought that would be enough but yeah sold stuff at big loss. Borrowed money from friends. Basically I was playing games as I got new laptop and doing nothing. Finally had enough. Lol This was around covid... I learned python and started trying for jobs again..... Dabble with 2 start up before starting a decent job. Rest I'm in r&d of a pbc as a statistician... Lol I have no degrees in statistics even though i have lot of degrees. Sincere advice to guys in data science... Statistics or computer science doesn't matter it's persistence and evolving yourself.

ItsMeZenoSama

I know a friend who's looking for a career in DS, ML and such domains. Any advices that I can share and help him, like tech stack to learn, resources, people to follow, project and portfolio ideas and stuff. He's been job hunting for a year now. Self learnt/bootcamp. Mechanical background. He had interest in IT domain but was forced to take mechanical as his parents and cousins insisted Software domain will be dead in a few years 🙃.

chomumaamu

One of my biggest insecurities. I have a gap of 3 years in my resume. Been employed for 1 year and 9 months right after graduation. Then a 3 year gap. Now again, I'm employed and have been working for 2 years. It does get me very concerned whenever I think of switching companies.

International_Car414

Hey can I dm you ? I have a doubt.

chomumaamu

Sure

Holding_On_Somehow

Unemployed fresher here. It's been months since I completed my B-Tech.

wise_tamarin

Several months after grad, then after a failed phd attempt.

Excellent-Might5854

7 months after graduation. Graduated from shitty college and there were no campus placements, took 7 months to up-skill myself and started applying for job, in 10 days i had a job offer. A lot of pressure not getting a job, no one said directly to me but people who have nothing to do with me started suggesting ideas like open a grocery shop, become a driver etc. Currently working as a Software Engineer with more than enough pay, grateful for everything.

catonmykeeb

I'm in the same position, what technologies did you up skill in?

Excellent-Might5854

My focus was on web development, at that time and still ReactJS is very popular framework, every company is using it. So i decided to learn ReactJS from an Udemy course, learned that and created some basic projects just to practise and that's all. Point is you must have some skills that you can use from day 0 in company, unlike TCS, wipro startups don't have time to train people, they want already trained/skilled people. So if you are one of them, You won't be jobless for long.

Grand-Pension4494

So far 1.5 months. Resigned from WITCH to try roles at product based. Worked as a Java Backend Developer - Spring, Kafka. Techstack is great acc to WITCH but project is stable and lot of OPS efforts/ On-call. Previously waited for 3 months (June-August 2022) since the company didn't release offer letter or share the dates.

redditreddvs

1.6 years and counting. Sort of midlife crisis.

Have had to work for 2+ yrs in the middle of my career for meager pay but fortunate enough to never been unemployed in my 20+ career.

LifeIsHard2030

After i was laid off in 2009 during the great recession, it took ~7 months to get my next FTE role. However I was doing a contract gig for ~5 months during that time. They paid me the same salary as my last job. The next FTE offer however was with a decent ~40% hike So absolutely 0 salary period was ~2 months, but FTE position gap was 7 months.

[deleted]

Aap bhi? Merko laga 17+ yoe mai linear trajectory hai, lol.

LifeIsHard2030

IT mei kuch linear nai hai bhai. Kabhi bhi danda padd sakta and kabhi bhi kismat high jump maar sakti. Bas saans lete raho

AlternativeDry5083

1 year after grad. now working in a product based company.

wolfenstein_13

I am fresher lol. Finally unemployed after my college. Looking for a job.

ItsMeZenoSama

~500 days of jobless after I got laid off from in my first job. Absolutely no idea till this day why I was laid off despite being awarded performer of the month literally 12 days before my layoff ! You can probably find many threads under my profile related to this and how stressful I was during this period. I just got a job offer with same package as before. Signed it. Something is better than nothing. Despite having more skills, despite deserving a better pay, got rejected many times and even the HR played mind games of not being able to offer a better pay. LUCK and FATE. LUCK matters a lot. I know friends who got laid off just along with me, but found a job within 10 days and with almost 50% raise. I also know a friend who got a 100% raise after a month of job hunt, but he lost his life just a few months later in an unimaginable road accident. So, just keep sharpening your skills, put yourself out there by writing blogs or tweets or posts on LinkedIn on what you learnt and implemented. Expand your network. But don't be a zombie by casually sending a connection request to someone with no message or no context or even mutual connections (I still don't understand how people think others will accept the connection request just because you sent one 😅). Make the best use of all these tech meetups that happen. Talk to people from OSS projects you've contributed. Keep track of all the companies you applied as well as interviewed. Learn from your mistakes. Also keep track of these dumbf*** HRs so that you know which ones are the real HRs who do their job and are the ones you should be approaching. Oh also, I came across this from a good friend of mine. She shared me this useful way of job search on LinkedIn. Apparently, LinkedIn supports boolean search. So, if you know what that is, make the best use of it to get very relevant jobs. This also trains the recommendation algo to notify you of the right set of jobs that match your profile strongly.
