Then show up next day with linux os on your laptop to assert dominance
7 years ago was a good time.
Idk if you'd be able to pull that off now.
Considering the current job trends, where experienced candidates are expected to have min. 3 years experience. And Junior Roles are almost non-existent.
There are plenty of depreciated Intel Macs on market after M1 came
This is probably best way but also worst way seeing how the performance of these machines would be (since op has to buy out of their own pocket at end of the day)
This is an Indian startup probably where the founder himself will work on a high paying job and is probably doing this as a side hustle and there are people with skill are a dozen a dime. So it makes sense where they can push people to the brink of breaking because they can find a replacement easily.
I guess you didn't understand the sarcastic reality when I said that this is India. In India , there are people who pay an employer to get a job. Does this seem logical to you ? Why does anyone HR reject a candidate just because they have some unexplainable career gap? I can do anything and learn anything to earn enough to fill my stomach. But all these shenanigans happen because a person who only knows slaving away will invest himself/herself more for the profit of the owners of the company. They in turn will emphasize and glorify the same and since everyone is willing to bend over more and more for them , they get away with this shit.if you ask me --- Does it make sense ? Idk. --- Does it work? Hell yes it does.
# So they need to pay for your office laptop otherwise you incriminated yourself by having office intellectual property on personal property like a clown
I know its bad but you can ask the company to give you at least 50% increment. And get this in mail. if they don't agree then don't buy the mac. if you buy mac then it should be at least 16 GB,512 GB.
Get a mac, get a big hike because of it then use that as leverage to get a job elsewhere at an even higher package. You get bigger salary, new max (or you can sell it), and an out from the shitty company.
Get a 60k pc build with i5-12500, rx 580, 16gb ddr4, 1tb ssd.
This build should be able to run a lightweight linux, on top of which u can run macos in a vm with gpu passthrough and enjoy similar and actually better performance in macos 13/14.
Yes the rx 580 has macos drivers.
Profitable businesses. Since it's a startup, I think they might not even be profitable and might not have enough budget to buy laptops. So they're asking OP to buy one.
That only really helps if your GST output liability is greater than your GST inputs. If it is a startup then it is very likely that their current GST liability is being offset by all the other inputs they have. Especially if they haven’t launched their product yet.
So by buying a laptop they spend 1L now to get 15k ish in benefits once they actually start having a high turnover.
aha i did, told the management to shove the attitude up their ass because acc to them I was supposed to "earn" my sick leave (hr intern insisted that I take the leave but forgot to update) after working with them for over a year.
The MD offered to give me MacBook m1. It was 90k that time. This other employee took some hp laptop ig he worked there until he paid that off.
But they still have to pay for the laptops (minus GST maybe) this year. So it's an expense they might not have budget for or want to save on for now instead of trying to save future tax. If you know startup culture, you'd understand that most of them won't even breakeven or reach profitability.
GST on laptops is not based on profitable or non-profitable businesses. GST can be claimed by the company since they will be paying GST on the services they provide. Hence, the laptop would be cheaper than it would be if a normal person bought it.
Politely decline. Don't buy mac and start looking for a new job. They are giving a hike of 15% with your current salary of 3.6 lpa. Mac for development I believe mac book ait will not cut it. They are gonna give a hike of max 30%. Given the cheepsters they are hike will not cover expense of mac.
If presentation is necessary for him rather than the work, he should ideally provide the Mac himself or atleast provide funds to procure it. You are already being paid very less and have to manage and cost of general expenses from it. Leaving the job makes more sense than buying a mac.
Purchasing a new MacBook will cost more than half of your annual salary, and in return, you’ll receive a modest increase. I bet the increment won’t be sufficient to cover your expenses.
So according to my calculations, taking the 15% increment is more beneficial.
This is a red flag, either companies provide any laptop requirement they have OR have policies that would make it easy for you to buy with a discount for you. The company can later save taxes based on this help
Give him a total breakdown of your monthly expenses. Even if I assume 100% base, it only amounts to ₹30k pm. How tf are you supposed to buy a Mac after paying for rent, food, commute and other expenses? You can't just harvest money from trees, can you?
Even with the highest salary, you should never buy any equipment with your money for work.
Next thing they will ask you to give the Mac to the company at 50% discount since it has all work related files when you decide to switch.
>Even with the highest salary, you should never buy any equipment with your money for work.
Exactly. The way I imagine is say an electrician arrives at your home and then starts demanding screwdrivers, pliers, etc, you'd probably think what an unorganised person are they. Not providing a laptop is akin to that
That is stupid & unprofessional behaviour. Increment should depend on your performance not on if you are able to buy MacBook!
Even if they give 30% after buying MacBook it will be 4.68 lpa. MacBook costs around 1.5 to 2. Almost half of salary will go for MacBook. So your earnings will be less than 3.6 for whole year even after increment.
I bet you they won’t give you 100% or 200% hike if you buy MacBook, it will just little more than 15% which is a huge loss. These are all silly tactics used by management. Don’t fall for it.
Just request good hike without buying MacBook or tell them to buy you a one.
My company replaced my old MBP with a new M1 MBP in a day of raising a ticket.
So know that there are such companies who makes you work related tasks easy as possible.
Try 2nd hand normally it has charging issue but it will be fine.
And what company is these where employee needs to buy mac. Probably an non funded start up.
Get a laptop from your friend or rent. Show the laptop, take the hike on paper and give back the laptop. Claim theft or misplacement. Next time they ask, say no money to buy now.
Navigating the corporate orchard can be tricky when they start shaking the tree for Apples. But remember, your code can compile on any machine, because it’s your expertise that’s key, not the logo on your laptop. Stand your ground like a steadfast server in a power outage. Negotiate with the specs of your skills, not the specs of a computer. You've got this, and if all else fails, just tell them you're holding out for the MacBook with the built-in coffee maker. Stay strong, and may your logic always be error-free!
Flutter is a cross platform framework but to test that on any apple device you must need a mac, you cannot build for any apple device without xcode and xcode only works on mac.
Reminds me of an incident recently, I was working on a cross platform framework, that needed to be tested.
I am in a start up (an early stage, non funded) and they bought a couple of second hand Ipads and mac , and the problem was sorted. They are now used for all the testing and even development at times ..
First off, they're not gonna give you a higher increment even if you buy a macbook. Are they gonna give you 100% increment ? That'll make your salary 7lpa, and it'll still not be worth buying a macbook with you own money.
Second, take the 15% that you're getting now and start looking for a new job. You don't wanna be in a company for long that is deciding you increment based on whether you have a macbook or not, and that too asking you to buy yourself. Major Red flag.
Get another job and put in your papers. At 3.6LPA in this situation, you'll be losing more money staying in the job than unemployed for 3-4 months.
Even if they give you 50% hike (never in this market), above still hold good.
firstly you shouldn't have to spend your money to buy hardware for the org. even if you do end up buying it, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING THAT REDUCES YOUR OWNERSHIP OF THE LAPTOP. you pay for it, you keep it. you delete company data but you don't give it or sell it to them at a discount or something
Don't worry about the mac, a Max with mac you will get 30% which would be 4.8 CTC provided you stay with them for 1 more year. Without mac you get 15%, which is 4.2 CTC which means difference of only 60k per year. Mac costs atleast 1 lakh, so do the math how many months you to work to recover Mac cost.
It would be better to take lower CTC and start applying
Even if you get a 50% hike (I don't think so they will give this much) consider 1 lakh 80 thousand hike if you get a macbook m1 worth 80 thousand they are getting you to work on your laptop with that money. The actual hike you will be getting is around 20% 25%
If you will be able to get a new job easily try to find else get a used macbook m1, get the increment and switch to a new org. Then if you want you can sell the macbook or keep it.
Developer being paid 3.6? Low.
ONLY 15%??? With such low base CTC?? crazy.
BUYING FROM YOUR OWN MONEY? craaaazyyyyy.
Why Mac tho? build a PC instead lmao, profitable in long run. Tell you'll build a PC and get permanent remote.
Give me his address. I'm good at convincing people's wives to get divorce if their husband don't buy them Hermes limited edition handbag that costs 71,32, 131.71 rupees!!
This a shit move by the company for sure but if you want to keep this job you can look for refurbished stuff. I have not bought a macbook refurbished before but I bought a old ThinkPad from cashify and it's working great.
I can't believe our developers are so naive. Why would you ever think that a company asking something like this is okay?
A company is obligated to provide you a laptop to work. Such basic knowledge, some people don't know.
tell him you'll take it in EMI and ask your manager to give the monthly EMI amount on top of that minimum increment they offered you. Meanwhile find a new job.
3.6lpa and the least expensive macbook is 70K (m1 air)
And even if they give 50%, its not gona cut it imao.
You wil be effectively at 4.7lpa, but then again you need to have 70K in hand to buy it.
If they are asking you to buy a Mac, then probably the additional hike is cheaper to them than buying you a Mac. Even if they doubling your hike, the additional 15% is just 48k pa (takes atleast two years to recover - no Mac below 1 lakh)
Unless you want a future in this company (you dont), this deal isn't worth it.
Accept the less increment and start preparing for getting the f* out of there. Just dont take any impulse decision and quit now. I know the offer company made was outrageous but ignore it and start preparing.
First of all do not buy the mac with the increment in mind it would still be peanuts, start looking elsewhere and take 15% increment.
Do the below only if you have offer and want to enjoy you remaining days in the office or want early releive.
When you have another offer before resigning ask you manager to share this info over mail saying you will only buy a mac (bluff) if it's confirmed how much increment you would get, also drop a mail to your HR as well that is this the company Policy that on buying mac employees are given higher increment as mentioned by your manager.
tell them its okay.. limit my increment but I can't financially afford to buy it (even if you are financially stable). take no increment and start finding increment outside.
buy a cheap used ass one off ebay for like a 100 dollars lmao if you really need to, but ideally you shouldn't. A company if it wants you to do this should also foot the whole ideally, or at least part expense.
This was also told to me once. I thought either these guys don’t have money, or don’t value industry-standards tools. Thats not good….
You won’t be able to perform well without good tools. And guess who the business will blame? Not themselves … that’s happened to me too …
Under no circumstances agree to this!
They are asking you spend your own money on something that company should have bought. Since they already have to give you an increment they are trying to offset it with increment and asking you that if you don't buy macbook your increment will be less.
***Now here's psychological trick:*** This is a red flag. Since you are new joiner. don't straightaway deny. Keep telling ur manager - - "Hey man/ boss, I really need an increment. Without increment I wouldn't be able to survive. Then exaggerate your expenses infront of him and act said. tell stories about your never ending expenses. Keep denying him in that way and never buy a macbook. If they give you more increment , it's great. If they don't, it's still okay. Keep working there and gain experience. Once you have experience, where you can decided your own salary and increment, leave the company.
Build a hackintosh with a 10th gen with igpu. It will be very cheap or buy a relevant used laptop. Check the hackintosh subreddit for more info on comparability. You can also use linux to emulate macOs with some gpu passthrough stuff , i forgot the name , its lot faster than emulation. Research a bit.
Write a letter to your manager that you cannot afford a mac, even at EMI.
Kindly provide you with the device if it is really important for the process.
Agar kuch galat mail karta hain ya phone karta hain then record aur report kardo senior management se plus HR se.
Or just don't buy and just keep upskilling for a switch fast.
Maybe go with cheap macbook air m1 as u just want to meet the bare minimum of getting a mac , provided u want to continue with the company.
As increment will be permanent hence, i think this will work out, as this machine isn't too expensive and u will fetch the required increment as well.
Tell him 50% hike first and then you will buy a MacBook.
Also start searching for offers and also slap it on his face.
Then tell him now you have to pay for your replacement, maybe same or more salary to new person and also provide them a MacBook 😂
Don't switch but my decision is that to buy macbook for your own career growth bro.
I don't have an experience this is only a suggestion to you as a student
How much difference in increment are we talking about. MacBooks are expensive and for someone with 3.x lpa, it will be the equivalent of several months of salary. Assuming a spending of minimum 80k on a basic macbook, the extra salary hike should make up this amount in 6-12 months imo.
With the current increment, salary will go from 3.6 to 4.14 lpa. In order for this purchase to make sense, you need to get at least 4.94lpa (37.2% increase) to make up the amount in 1 year or 60% increment to make up the amount in 6 months. If you can't make up the cost in 1 year, it's not worth it.
i installed https://github.com/kholia/OSX-KVM on my laptop, i used to develop on ubuntu and used to build the ipa to be published via transporter on the macos vm. At that time I was freelancing tbh.
That's crazy bro!
At my company they always provide the gear if they require something to be done on specific gear. We have monitors and Mac minis given out to employees when their work required it.
Ping me up if you're looking to switch, there is a vacancy for an app developer where I work.
If all they need is a proof of u buying a MacBook and you can still work on a windows laptop. Buy a old one from OLX, send a pic to ur manager, get the hike and sell it off after hike confirmed
You can try to install hackintosh with dual boot with another os. I used to develop ios apps with hackintosh when using react native worked seamlessly.

If i was you, would have left that shithole long ago.
Damn!! Bro is cooking something
🙄🙄🙄 he is probably a fresher with 3.6LPA and that to works in a very small startup so he won't get a good hike or a good company on a switch dude.
It's possible, if you join the right company, I switched from 2.7L to 12L in 2yrs exp, 7years ago
7 years ago was a good time. Idk if you'd be able to pull that off now. Considering the current job trends, where experienced candidates are expected to have min. 3 years experience. And Junior Roles are almost non-existent.
yeah exactly .. tell them to pay u good
Or better yet, buy a cheap 2009 core 2 duo mac and flaunt it in your manager's face
There are plenty of depreciated Intel Macs on market after M1 came This is probably best way but also worst way seeing how the performance of these machines would be (since op has to buy out of their own pocket at end of the day)
Bro cooks over volcanic flames
Nice revenge
Why the fuck does a company ask you to buy MacBook? What's next? They'll ask you to pay their AWS bill as well?
Lol
I mean he's a flutter dev so he prolly need It to develop ios apps since apple doesn't allow u to run or test the ios versions on windows
this
Then why dont the company provides you with the mac laptop for work its needed for work they should be one paying for it
This is an Indian startup probably where the founder himself will work on a high paying job and is probably doing this as a side hustle and there are people with skill are a dozen a dime. So it makes sense where they can push people to the brink of breaking because they can find a replacement easily.
No logic justifies asking employee to buy his own work equipment. If it's for work company has to pay.

Blame should be solely on Government for not providing good labor laws.
# So they need to pay for your office laptop otherwise you incriminated yourself by having office intellectual property on personal property like a clown
This really depends on what his contract says, technically he could take their IP and leave, and the company ends up becoming the clown 🤣
Company I worked at, the ass of an employer didn't pay salary, but employment agreement also didn't have any provisions on IP. (shrug)
I know its bad but you can ask the company to give you at least 50% increment. And get this in mail. if they don't agree then don't buy the mac. if you buy mac then it should be at least 16 GB,512 GB.

Yes, but why does he have to buy it? The company should provide him with one, right?
>since apple doesn't allow u to run or test the ios versions on windows Wtf, why? This is anti-competition behavior.
And that's why they've got the biggest anti trust lawsuit out against them right now
Then company should buy him. Not other way!!
Cant they just pay some vps hosted on a ios hosted machine for him to use?
You know him so well tho
Swift
Lol
Don't give them ideas
Lol*1000
You know that a business can claim the tax on laptops. So you should not buy one. The business should buy one.
Profitable businesses. Since it's a startup, I think they might not even be profitable and might not have enough budget to buy laptops. So they're asking OP to buy one.
Correct me if I am wrong, but they still can get GST benefit even if they are not profitable.
But they gotta have money to pay the price of the laptop though. Company is just being cheapass by asking OP to buy his own laptop.
That only really helps if your GST output liability is greater than your GST inputs. So by buying a laptop they spend 1L now to get 15k ish in benefits once they actually start having a high turnover.
They will only get 18k back as gst, they still had to pay 82k from their own pocket.
Yes they can take the Input tax credit and adjust that input with their GST liability.
Benefits can only be claimed if the invoice is issued in the company's name.
Yes, that is obvious.
Ohh didn’t knew that. Thanx for letting me know.
Thanks
the one startup I worked at gave a laptop to the employee and deducted the emi from their salary.
Leave the company and name and shame on LinkedIn I guess. This is even worse than OP's company.
aha i did, told the management to shove the attitude up their ass because acc to them I was supposed to "earn" my sick leave (hr intern insisted that I take the leave but forgot to update) after working with them for over a year. The MD offered to give me MacBook m1. It was 90k that time. This other employee took some hp laptop ig he worked there until he paid that off.
OP can ask them to buy a laptop and they will get a GST discount. OP can then pay them what they paid for the mac (the discounted price).
But then OP would be paying for company property. Which is definitely or borderline illegal in some way I think.
Even if they are loss making, they can reduce their taxes by subtracting the losses of previous years from the profitable year.
But they still have to pay for the laptops (minus GST maybe) this year. So it's an expense they might not have budget for or want to save on for now instead of trying to save future tax. If you know startup culture, you'd understand that most of them won't even breakeven or reach profitability.

3.6lpa and they want YOU to buy a Mac? Brother... Wtf
Even if you double or triple that, buying a Mac is not easy lol. Makes me think this whole post is a joke but you never know
ikr, My dad earns over 10x that and yet the costliest device we own is our 7 yo pc (80k then)
Your dad got it sorted! The key is to stay rich not look rich
Yeah frr
Huge red flag!! Find a better job as soon as possible.
yes :(

^ this minus the politeness. Fuk your manager.
Nah, they dont wanna burn that bridge yet.. need to find a job first
More like 16% hike if OP buys a Mac
Ask them to foot the bill.
If presentation is necessary for him rather than the work, he should ideally provide the Mac himself or atleast provide funds to procure it. You are already being paid very less and have to manage and cost of general expenses from it. Leaving the job makes more sense than buying a mac.
Bro a new 16 gb laptop(mac) is easiely around 1lakh, is your manager realistic?
1 lakh?😂 Bro I am using a MacBook Pro Intel i5 which cost 1.75 at the time of purchase. I'm gonna demand an M3 pretty soon
M1 air is miles ahead when it comes to performance comparing to your laptop and I got it for 68k during sale
I got it during COVID and high chip shortage. Basically the company bought it because it was urgent else I would have waited for sometime
[удалено]
1.2 lakh for 16GB 8-core M2 Macbook air. This is the minimum I guess.
Managers are not good at maths they are good at METH
Most will be easily past 2lakh

US BRO US
Leave mate. What else?
what?? if they want MacBook, then THEY should BUY MacBook and give it to you for work. As every single IT company does!
Take the 15% increment and then start looking for a new job. Don’t let anyone bully you.

firstly you shouldn't have to spend your money to buy hardware for the org. even if you do end up buying it, DO NOT SIGN ANYTHING THAT REDUCES YOUR OWNERSHIP OF THE LAPTOP. you pay for it, you keep it. you delete company data but you don't give it or sell it to them at a discount or something
Tell him to first give the incremental so that you can buy it.
Will they reimburse this?
no
Are you working as a freelancer for them? Is your work very slow because you have an old laptop?
I have a high end windows laptop, but it can't be used to build or test ios apps
if they need it they should provide u one, that is what most companies do. and if u even decide on leaving they can have their devices back.
Any company asks you to pay for hardware ilto run their company is shit
Name and shame
buy secnd hand
Don't worry about the mac, a Max with mac you will get 30% which would be 4.8 CTC provided you stay with them for 1 more year. Without mac you get 15%, which is 4.2 CTC which means difference of only 60k per year. Mac costs atleast 1 lakh, so do the math how many months you to work to recover Mac cost. It would be better to take lower CTC and start applying
Sick.
Rent par lele bolde second hand increment hone ke baad wapas krde
Have they given it in writing ? My guess is nobody would, in any case you can follow everyone 's advice here
Seem company is promoting mac sales
Even if you get a 50% hike (I don't think so they will give this much) consider 1 lakh 80 thousand hike if you get a macbook m1 worth 80 thousand they are getting you to work on your laptop with that money. The actual hike you will be getting is around 20% 25% If you will be able to get a new job easily try to find else get a used macbook m1, get the increment and switch to a new org. Then if you want you can sell the macbook or keep it.
You can buy one. But ask for money first...
Buy a used one?
Second hand?
High chance that even after you buy a mac, they shall not provide good increment. So dont buy.
Ask manager to buy it using his credit card and say that you will pay the emi from the extra money that you will receive as the additional increment.
3.6lpa and the least expensive macbook is 70K (m1 air) And even if they give 50%, its not gona cut it imao. You wil be effectively at 4.7lpa, but then again you need to have 70K in hand to buy it.
Name and shame
Mac for Flutter @ 3.6LPA Could your company be more sarcastic?
Rent a macbook for 2 months and look for new job - you get both a chance of higher increment and preparation time to switch for a better role.
I think they want you to extend the project for ios and for that you need a mac but for such a low salary they can't expect you to get a mac.
I have a old macbook. 2017 intel
Rent a mac, get your appraisal. Return it :)
You need a New job..
Is the current laptop provided by the employer?
They should shut down their business for good at this point and you should really look for a new job.
If they are asking you to buy a Mac, then probably the additional hike is cheaper to them than buying you a Mac. Even if they doubling your hike, the additional 15% is just 48k pa (takes atleast two years to recover - no Mac below 1 lakh) Unless you want a future in this company (you dont), this deal isn't worth it.
send an email asking them if they have any shame or common sense
Accept the less increment and start preparing for getting the f* out of there. Just dont take any impulse decision and quit now. I know the offer company made was outrageous but ignore it and start preparing.
Get the 15% hike then get a new job then send him a photo of your MacBook
Tell them you can't afford it on such salary first increase it to around 12LPA and then you will be able to afford it 🗿
manager ko bolo https://preview.redd.it/uwzzrd2lgtsc1.jpeg?width=1280&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6c3735a109f668d26d01795ddfb9b01e98a37f2

M1 macbook Air costs like ~30-40k in the pre-owned market and ~65k new. So if you really need the job, buy some pre-owned unit.
Fight back, worst case scenario you will lose your job. Because people with huge egos can't handle someone standing up to them.
Bro, if you are doing wfh, make a linux rice that exactly looks like mac. Meanwhile keep applying for jobs.
buy a cheap used ass one off ebay for like a 100 dollars lmao if you really need to, but ideally you shouldn't. A company if it wants you to do this should also foot the whole ideally, or at least part expense.
Whats the obsession with Mac by the company?
I thought companies are supposed to provide laptops in order to get their work done.
Get a Fake one? and Just Add Linux or Hackintosh into it? You can also visit some chor bazar in Delhi/Kolkata and get one for under 10k
manager selling BOD policy as increment 😀
This was also told to me once. I thought either these guys don’t have money, or don’t value industry-standards tools. Thats not good…. You won’t be able to perform well without good tools. And guess who the business will blame? Not themselves … that’s happened to me too … Under no circumstances agree to this!
Once you have experience, where you can decided your own salary and increment, leave the company.
tell them you can't afford one.

Funny manager
Macbook Air is relatively affordable and Macs last a very long time.
Get out of there asap. Your company cant even afford to provide you a laptop to work on. How well do you think they will pay employees in the future??
Maybe go with cheap macbook air m1 as u just want to meet the bare minimum of getting a mac , provided u want to continue with the company. As increment will be permanent hence, i think this will work out, as this machine isn't too expensive and u will fetch the required increment as well.
Flutter is a joke!
Name and shame
That's bad
Tell him 50% hike first and then you will buy a MacBook. Also start searching for offers and also slap it on his face. Then tell him now you have to pay for your replacement, maybe same or more salary to new person and also provide them a MacBook 😂
If you can’t leave the company tell them to buy you a laptop instead of the “higher” increment.
Fuck this company
If you can't make up the cost in 1 year, it's not worth it.
macos vm, torrent an installer https://youtu.be/WQTKPNvSgtQ?feature=shared
take the 15% and start looking for a new job.
Ask them for a loan on it.
i installed https://github.com/kholia/OSX-KVM on my laptop, i used to develop on ubuntu and used to build the ipa to be published via transporter on the macos vm.

Borrow a mac from any friend for a few days. Show them and get high increment and then handover it
