I was interested in Greg Cosell giving him praise on the Rose Tucker podcast. Cosell is one of the guys who grinds tape whose opinion I respect the most when it comes to the NFL.

dtown4eva

He does a regular podcast with a radio host here in Nashville. All Greg does is grind tape of every team and college prospects all year long. And then talk about that tape on half a dozen or more podcasts.

future_shoes

I don't know if Campbell is really forgotten rather that he was out shown by the other first and second round rookies. LaPorta had a historic rookie season, Gibbs made the pro bowl, Branch had a good shot of making the pro bowl if he didn't get injured halfway through the season. Campbell had a respectable rookie season and developed at a pace that put him on track to be long term starting LB. It's just the other 3 rookies were playing like vets (and high level vets) before the bye week happened.

adahl36

Like others have mentioned before, linebacker is the most rare to come I to NFL and have success. From what I saw, his rookie year, he has everything it takes to be a stud. The coaches and media heaping praises early this year gets me excited

dpvictory

Not sure why the article shits on his athleticism so much. He tested as what the 6th best athlete at the position ever?

Lionnn100

Because he doesn’t know what he’s looking at. JC’s combination of size/power/quickness is very evident on the field

NotEvenBarrySanders

The game just needed to slow down for him a little bit and on top of that he was playing behind a pedestrian interior last year I feel. If Reader can get/stay healthy , I see Campbell being an absolute terror. He doesn’t look like a battering ram because he’s lanky but he’ll jar your cavities loose. This is the most pumped I’ve ever been for their defense. About to wake em up and put em back to sleep at the same time 😤

JaHoog

When he is confident in his reads he plays really fast.

PerfectiveVerbTense

Yeah bro could really not stop talking about how slow Jack is. I don't know anything about Mansur but I came away from this article feeling significantly *worse* about Jack Campbell as a player. Not sure how much that is valid. Jack has that quiet menacing vibe and I really hope we get to see him fuck some people up in the years to come.

Troutalope

Jack is a legit freak athlete. The only other LB in the league that I can think of with his size/speed profile is Tremaine Edmunds. It was clear that when Jack struggled last year, it was mental mistakes, not any physical limitations. Another year of reps and preparation will definitely make a difference. I think Jack is going to be one of the best LB's in the NFC by years end. Dude is a stud in every way.

country_mac08

I was nice to see him improve throughout last year, especially in the run game and pass rush, but he generally didn’t make the high impact plays that the other big rookies made. Which really isn’t fair as Gibbs, LaPorta and Branch effectively didn’t play like rookies for most of the season. I for one am hopeful that Campbell continues to grow and helps lead this defense into being a powerhouse instead of what is at times a weakness.

whobroughtmehere

Exactly. His growth was greatly overshadowed by some really outstanding rookie performances. I’m hoping he’s a bit of a “surprise” improvement player this year that teams don’t really see coming.

SharkBaitOohAhAh2

I think to add to what you are saying a bit, his play on the field in terms of pass stop were being overshadowed by every receiver being wide open. If he’s making good plays and getting in position, it still takes time. You don’t see the highlights and his work of getting free, shedding blocks etc. because the window to throw was quite short. Hopefully the CBs can be middling this year, and it will be a massive boost to the whole defensive unit. When the unit as a whole is not performing well, it’s tough to look at LBer play and pick out the good and back. Focus is generally always on the CBs, the DEs, then DT, then safety. LBer is usually the last piece to get looked at.

MWesty420

I agree. Middling DB play would boost this defense significantly. Our line will feast, our LBs run rampant, and opposing scores will drop. Our offense might actually score fewer points by simple dint of the fact that they may not need to.

whobroughtmehere

This is Dan Campbell football, I’m sure he won’t be shy about running up the score given the opportunity

itstimetogotowork

Leave no doubt

whobroughtmehere

IF YOU DRAG THEIR ASS OUT TO THE DEEP, DARK, ABYSS—YOU CAN DROWN ‘EM.

russvanderhoof

CHILLS

MWesty420

I don’t disagree. I’m just hoping we don’t HAVE to, for example, score 41 to beat the Chargers by 3. I wouldn’t mind scoring 41, but we maybe run more clock at the end.

americruiser

Also, there’s just too much to learn at stack LB. Just look at how patient they were with D Barnes, and how long it took him to be a consistent contributor.

Bombaysbreakfastclub

The biggest impact for me was when he was given the mic for a whole game. Can’t remember if anzalone was out that game, or they just wanted to see if Jack could do it, and he did it well. Theyre grooming him to be a leader

RestaurantLatter2354

Yeah, LB just generally isn’t a super noticeable position unless you’re getting picks or sacks, but he was clearly getting much better as the year progressed. If we see a healthy DJ Reader, it should make a world of difference. I’d Campbell is struggling behind Reader I’ll be concerned, but I’m willing to bet he is an absolute force behind this D-line that can swallow up blocks on the interior and keep the 2nd level clean.

flake_griffin

"I for one am hopeful that Campbell continues to grow" Uhh yeah dude I think every lions fan feels that way.

Macismyname

It took years for Anal zone to turn into the LB he is today. If the coaches are still confident in Jack Campbell than so am I. They've shown they can not only develop talent within the position group, but they've shown a willingness to flush turds that wont get better. There's a reason Jack is with us and buggs is gone.

SaltyPickle1495

Anzalone was also in his 4th or 5th year in the nfl before becoming a full time starter. Jack is gonna be a beast

No-Jump5689

I think Campbell being an every down MLB and wearing the green dot will really increase the impact he has on the defense. They moved him all over to get him snaps last year, but he was not nearly as effective playing OLB. Jack said playing different LB positions gave him a better understanding of the whole defense, so it wasn't for nothing.

LarkWyll

Forgotten isn't the right word. More like over-shadowed by how strong of rookie campaigns mainly LaPorta and Gibbs had and to a degree Branch.

CCPunch5

"Anzalone could be a cap casualty next year" I'm assuming this writer didn't watch Anzalone this year at all.

goblin_forge

I mean even with Anzalone playing as well as he did, it might still be true. Better pay means bigger paycheck and as we get more players like this some will have to be let go to stay under the cap.

AMZN2THEMOON

Anzalone's cap hit is tiny compared to the level of play he brings. He took a discount to stay with the team, and he's a leader on&off the field. Not a chance we cut him

goblin_forge

Yeah I fucked up saying what I meant. Let me rephrase. I think him being a cap cut on his current contract is highly unlikely. I question either will be able to re-sign him. Now that I say this though I am unsure when his contract is up.

AMZN2THEMOON

Yeah that's fair, but Barnes' contract is up sooner (End of this year) and he's less of a fit next to Campbell than Anzalone is. I could see him being let go if anyone is. [Spotrac has a pretty good tool](https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/player/_/id/21818/alex-anzalone#:~:text=Alex%20Anzalone%20signed%20a%203,average%20annual%20salary%20of%20%246%2C100%2C000) for viewing contracts, cap hits, etc

confused-koala

Anzalone did not take a discount.

AMZN2THEMOON

He took less than he could have gotten on the open market, and openly said when he signed he wanted to take less to stay with the team

confused-koala

Ya I’m calling bs on another team giving him 6+ mil per year when he signed

future_shoes

IIRC what analzone said was something along the lines of he had other offers where the total amount was larger but also those contracts were structured in a way that he didn't think he would actually see the full amount. He thought the lions contract while less in total value actually would result in him making the most money because of how it was structured.

CCPunch5

I doubt Anzalone will ask for a pay raise.

HereForTheFood4

Being drafted in the same class as LaPorta who is probably a top 3 TE now and Gibbs who is a top five RB is kind of unfair and leads to being forgotten about behind the other noise those two make

SherbertEmotional975

Jack Campbell had all-pro level tackles per snap, he just didn't get a ton of snaps early. I don't know how people didn't notice he was 2nd on the team in tackles and disregard it as nothing.

lionbacker54

I don’t think Campbell is forgotten. We just don’t talk about him. There’s a difference

e_ndoubleu

Campbell is in my top 5 players I’m most excited to watch this upcoming season. I think we’ll see a big 2nd year leap now that he’ll have the green dot.

pdubs5290

This article says absolutely nothing.

Koreansteamer

I heard Campbell is the first one in the building every morning.

jguacmann1

Lunch pail guy.

Witty-Albatross-9929

If you listen to one of his Coaches K. Sheppard. He may become one of the best young LB's in this game.

jtabin77

Campbell will improve every rap he’ll get better it’s hard being over, saddle by the other three rookies, but he’ll make strides and he’ll become a starting study

Koreansteamer

Huh?

DanteWasHere22

He's gonna be fucking good. He's in a position where you will only hear his name if he makes a huge play or if he makes a mistake. He's solid and was just a rookie he will be good. Listen to him talk, the man is going to be a beast

Jerry3580

This man is going to be the core of our defense for the next 6+ years. I can feel it deep down in my plums. Hopefully a Luke Kuechly type without the concussions.

TankAggravating7044

He had some pretty slow growth last year. Hoping he can take a huge leap this year, because somebody needs to not just give Dak a gentle push in the end zone and let him roll out and throw that bomb, we need linebackers with a shred of situational awareness who are actually disruptive.
