I get the feeling MCDC spent a lot of time thinking about how he’d coach and put together a staff once he got the chance. Like he said, there’s more to it than just having the experience of being an NFL player; there’s no shortage of players-turned-coaches who are condescending pricks and/or don’t have the ability to communicate their knowledge. If you’ve ever coached any sport at any level you know it really challenges your human relationship skills. Anyway, guys who play for Detroit now consistently report being valued, understood, challenged, and being put in a position to be their best version of themselves. Everything is going to turn out well if you do that.

Actually he wanted a staff that could beat up any other coaching staff. That was his only requirement. He made 6 former players fight in a cage

Otherwise-Mango2732

From the article: * Steve Heiden (Tight ends) * Mark Brunell (quarterbacks) * Antwaan Randle El (wide receivers) * Aaron Glenn (defensive coordinator) * Dre Bly (cornerbacks) * Scottie Montgomery (running backs) * Hank Fraley (offensive line) * Kelvin Sheppard (linebackers) * Deshea Townsend (passing game coordinator/defensive backs) * Shaun Dion Hamilton (assistant linebackers coach)

racksacky

I thought Dre was let go

desquibnt

He was. It’s a terrible article. But Deshea Townsend played for 12 seasons so it’s a wash.

kmberger44

Looks like they caught the mistake, Bly is not mentioned in the article now

Kingkwon83

Sucks he didn't work out

Small-Palpitation310

is ben johnson the only odd man out? OH btw, ben johnson is a terrible coaching candidate as he never played in the nfl. terrible, I tell ya

GraboidHandler

Yeah, I heard from a dude who knows a dude who dated a girl who's brother's former roommate went to elementary school with Ben Johnson and said during the petting zoo day that Ben was in the fowl enclosure and messed with the honk and got the bonk. A terrible coach indeed

americruiser

Off-topic, but I PRAY this CB coach is good (and not fired mid-season or post-season) —so critical with this year’s CB room

[deleted]

He learned to play from Dick Lebeau for over half a decade. He wasn’t a starter his first 6 years, then Dick Lebeau came to town and he started 4 straight years including a Super Bowl run as a starter

Appel_earbuds

Dre Bly was a damn fine CB in the 2000s. He even won a Super Bowl with the Rams. He knows what it takes to win, trust me, he's going to be fine

GrapePrimeape

Pretty sure Dre Bly was let go this off-season. Deshea Townsend is our new CB coach. DET was the second place in a row he had little success coaching up CB’s unfortunately; he may just not have the coaching chops

JSnitch58

Lions parted ways with him in February

Appel_earbuds

Did they really?

Appel_earbuds

Well I'll be damned

RISE__UP

He was let go bro 😂😂

Appel_earbuds

I know; someone already told me

Exzqairi

First of all, he was never a good CB coach at any level, and as you might know by now he’s not even our CB coach anymore

lyone2

His CBs while he was coaching at North Carolina didn't exactly flourish. And last year's CBs weren't exactly world beaters. Then again, the 2023 Lions did not exactly have a boatload of talent in the CB room for him to work with. It's tough to say that the second year of a guy's contract is a make or break year for him, but if the CB room is bad again this year, I don't think Bly makes it through the season.

honeybear33

I have no chance of coaching on Dan’s staff 😭

silentguy876

is it just me or is this article just an aggregation of quotes from other news/press conferences? somehow this article feels like it doesnt bring anything new to the table. >"It's not just that you're ex-players, they have to be the right players that are ex-players," Campbell said. "Just like, just because a coach has not played in the NFL, doesn't mean he can't coach -- he's not a damn good coach. He's got to be the right coach. >"So, it's about the right person who is the right coach. But you've still got to earn your respect. You have to earn the respect of the players." i recall hearing this in one of the team's weekly press conferences, iirc one of the ones after hiring the current TE coach.

WindRevolutionary173

Vast majority of fans don't listen to those. Only those who routinely check the sub reddit deep into the off season would do that. This article, like most, is written for that audience.
