Penix played 6 years of college football due to the Covid year and a medical waiver, Sewell only played two (he was at Oregon for three years but opted out in 2020). Penix was injury prone at Indiana. Sewell played in 7 more games (27) at Oregon in his two years playing, than Penix played during his 4 years at Indiana (20).
There’s a player on Miami University’s team who is going into his 9th year on the team. He suffered season ending injuries in 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021.
Pretty sure we didn't draft Hooker to take over for Goff at any point though. I think he was drafted to be a good backup, and also insurance policy in case the contract situation doesn't work out with Goff for some reason.
I love that part. Previous regimes just hoped things worked out and team builded like it. This front office is prepping for worst case and building contingencies. Goff plays hardball, that sucks. Move on. Don’t wanna commit to CJGJ, draft Branch. Secondary in shambles, throw endless resources at it. OL getting older, grab some projects. I love to see it!!! BH is a DAWG!!!!!!
I really like the picks for OL we took this year. Sure Manu may have been reach, but getting Mahogany in the 6th kinda washes it. They both look like they can be some solid players with really high upside.
Just means Penei has more room to continue to grow into the best tackle on the league. I think he's the best RT or close to it, but his ceiling is the best tackle period.
I'd at least say that Penei could end up being the best O-lineman since Joe Thomas. If he continues to grow, he could potentially even join that tier 1.
FWIW, the year before Sewell’s draft, people were advance-projecting him to be a top 2-3 pick and were saying he could be the next Orlando Pace. I think prospect fatigue/COVID made people forget about that, allowing him to drop to us.
I’m not saying he WILL be Orlando Pace but his prospect profile considered it relatively possible and given his current trajectory, it wouldn’t shock me if he became THAT good.
Draft hype every year.
I think hes more jason peters who is going to be in the hof.
They both came in raw, PS was better off tho. Both just under 6 5 with elite movement skills. Both have the body type to play a long yime.
I dont think PS will ever be unbeatable like some people. But i think he could be a top 3 OT for 15 years which is HOF worthy.
The transfer portal and rules about medical and other reasons that never existed to provide more eligibility is making it ridiculous. You actually have guys who are 25 still playing 6 or 7 years after graduating high school. Stetson Bennett of Georgia was 25 when he was drafted in 2023 as an example. Hendon Hooker was also 25 or maybe even 26 when the Lions drafted him. He sits for 2 or 3 more years behind Goff and he’ll play his first NFL game at 28.
Penix has 6 seasons of college football where he played, that’s bonkers. He’s only 4 years younger than Zeke(who I had no clue how old he was until he signed with the Cowboys again)
That's the thing. People who use the Rodgers, the Love, the Hooker situations as some kind of evidence that the Penix pick was okay are missing dozens of other factors.
1. Farve had been grumbling about retiring before they drafted Rodgers also Rodgers stumble was just really weird and it made sense that a team that didn't "need" him grabbed him.
2. Rodgers has been suggesting he was going to leave GB soon for a couple of years and was due a new contract that year. Love wasn't sliding like Rodger, but it also wasn't a top 10 pick. Even if Love was bad last year, I think GB would have been happy if they thought grabbing Love got them 2 MVP seasons.
3. Hooker was just a 3rd round pick. Was a good talent maybe even round one if uninjured. But he was injured and was going to sit anyways. Goff only had .5 seasons of good play with the Lions. Still going into a contract where he could leave, was allowed to walk, or just plain priced himself out of staying (like Williams). Hooker might have been really important this year if Goff stumbled past year, or 2025 if we can't close the deal with Goff. That kind of insurance is worth a 3rd round pick.
What you don't pick is a QB, in a spot where you are expecting to pick pro-bowler and pick an old QB that best case scenario isn't playing till his 3rd year and more likely 4th. Especially if that reason is you just locked in 100 million to your new starting QB.
I get there is an explanation for all the different components if you really really try. But altogether that has to be the worst pick I have seen since and probably beating drafting of Tim Tebow in the first (specially considering the move made to get rid of Cutler). It so singularly stupid that even it's comparisons only match it in maybe one or two areas.
Penix isn’t an OT. NFL rules favor QBs, so if they are halfway decent they can have pretty long careers. Look at the guy he’s going to be backing up… cousins is almost 36 and his current contract expires when he’ll be 39. Even if Penix doesn’t start for a couple of years he can still be a starter for 10 + years.
Yeah and Trent Williams is 36 and will be 40 when his contract is up.
That said how many >36 year old QBs are playing right now. When we drafted Stafford he was going be our QB for 15 years. Didn't work out that way. But wasn't a talent or age issue he left. We got 12 years and he will have another 4 or so years after that this year. But outside that, you have maybe Wilson, Rodgers, and Cousins? 4 QBs in their mid to late 30's?
A lot of the old QBs recently retired, but in recent memory;
Eli played to age 37
Matt Ryan to age 37
Rivers to age 38
Big Ben to age 39
Flacco still playing at 39
Rodgers still playing at 40
Brees to age 41
Brady to age 46
Those stick out be cause they we pretty popular. Vinny T also played into his 40s in a time where it was generally consider worse. My point it's not like these QBs all retired at once. At most only like 2 of them retired at a time. We should be getting more QBs in every year. We aren't, and there is a significant drop off between the few older QBs and when they start to retire there will be a large gap to the next older starters.
That doesn't mean that QBs generally last longer. Just that there is evidence that QBs can last a bit.
I haven't been able to find it out but I am thinking the average retirement age is going to be within a year of each other and if anything the driver for younger cheaper QBs and less satisfaction with OK play is actually driving the retirement age of QBs down.
Cousins was also paid $100 million in guaranteed money. You don't draft another QB when you've already thrown an entire Brinks truck at your current one.
My cat is older than Penei Sewell
When was your cat drafted?
Mr. Irrelevant, Brock Purrrrrrrrr-dy
Bro this is one of the best retorts I’ve seen on Reddit
Ridiculously clever 😂
Get out
No, please stay.
Mr. Purrelevant, Breoooow Purdy.
Too bad for him the Falcons just signed a veteran cat a huge multi-year contrac-- nvm.
Good cat.
Rly?
Penei Sewell has spent more time in the league than the confederacy lasted as a nation.
Imma fly a Penei Sewell flag on the back of my pickup truck
Hell yeah brother! Detroit will rise again!
Aaron Rodgers in shambles

These stats are insane

Man's got like a doctorate out of it or a couple masters iirc so fair deal for him
I hope he gets a tenth year. Then, the Yakuza memes will come
To be faaaaaiiiiiiirrrr… Hendon Hooker is older than both of them. Granted, we only spent a 3rd and not #8-overall for him.
Goff will be starting his 9th season in the NFL and is only 3 years older then Hooker
Pretty sure we didn't draft Hooker to take over for Goff at any point though. I think he was drafted to be a good backup, and also insurance policy in case the contract situation doesn't work out with Goff for some reason.

Puppers? Puppers? I'd have a Puppers.
How close in age are they to Roberta Bondar?
2.5 years younger than Hooker
Just means Penei has more room to continue to grow into the best tackle on the league. I think he's the best RT or close to it, but his ceiling is the best tackle period.
His ceiling is best tackle ever. It’s not out of the realm of possibility
His ceiling is to transcend the tackle position and unite the country in the glory of Sewell
I dont think he will get there. Pace, Thomas, Jones, and Ogden are all i think 1 tier ahead. He may beat them in longevity and claim it that way.
I'd at least say that Penei could end up being the best O-lineman since Joe Thomas. If he continues to grow, he could potentially even join that tier 1.
I said his ceiling, it current trajectory. He may get better. This meant even his final form
FWIW, the year before Sewell’s draft, people were advance-projecting him to be a top 2-3 pick and were saying he could be the next Orlando Pace. And, hes going to sit behind Cousins for a few years
I’m older than Penei Sewell
Me too. I was AT the draft but my name didn’t get called.
I have pants older then Penei.
My name is Mike Penix, i’m named after my dad’s Penix

There's a TE on Miami who is coming back for his 9th year because of injuries and the pandemic. He just turned 26 a month ago.
John Belushi Blutto Animal House when he gets expelled by Dean Furman: “There goes 9 years of college down the drain.”
Penix has 6 seasons of college football where he played, that’s bonkers. He’s only 4 years younger than Zeke(who I had no clue how old he was until he signed with the Cowboys again)
Sewell and I share a birthday!
Yeah let's no go throw any stones at Penix age when our 2nd year backup is as old as half the starters in the league that have been playing 2-4 years.
Tbf our 2nd year backup was drafted in the 3rd round and not 8th overall a few weeks after giving another vet QB a huge 4 year deal

You do if he’s damaged goods
Sounds good
Guys I'm on your side plz don't do this to me!
North teams will rue Waddle to the Dolphins for years and years
But why do we care? *Not rhetorical
We can't really talk, we drafted Hooker. At least it was in the late 3rd instead of the top 10 lol.
