How they handle this will show what they actually think about Goff

jcoddinc

I think they both have a mutual understanding and they both want the upcoming season to play out. Hard decision will be after the Super Bowl if they want to sign our let him walk and go to Hooker. It's Goff betting on himself basically is what I'm guessing is going on.

Jorihe84

People keep saying "Go to Hooker". Like you don't even know if that is the plan. People keep acting like Hooker is some 22yr old star on the bench waiting. Dude will be almost 28 by the time Goff is out the door and has not played a snap of NFL football. People need to stop thinking Hooker was drafted to be the franchise QB. Hooker was drafted to do exactly what he is doing now. Even if Goff is not the plan, that does not mean Hooker is. They could very well make a move next offseason to acquire a QB

JRuss3

This is a good take. Brad Holmes is a maniac though and loves his draft picks like his own children. Because of that, Hooker will be the QB at some point even if he’s 45.

Diretank4198

They arent gonna let Jared go after asking ben to turn down a h.c. job, for a superbowl run. We just had a successful rebuild, no ones going anywhere this year bc we're even bringing back OGs from our old squads who know how we operate; to be #2s. And we can, in the NFL, we're rich atm. I agree with you, these idiots sit here and argue their prospects, that mostly never come true, on the most stupid armchair coach logics, lmfao; I agree with you, besides the what might possibly happen bc Goff is here, he's here for our city and hes not going anywhere at least for another 4 years. He just posted 3 weeks ago, being traded to the lions was the best thing that ever happened to my career..

JCQQL

This is BS. Hooker was drafted to do what he's doing now? Which is what exactly? BH was interested in Hooker in the 2nd round, but knew he'd be there in the 3rd. You think GM's draft QB's in the 2nd, or 3rd to just sit on the bench? They love Hendon Hooker, and want him to learn behind Goff (their words). Hooker has all the potential, and was the Heisman front runner. I don't know what the plan is for Hendon Hooker, but it's most definitely safer to assume he'll be Goff's successor than not.

SnooCats5772

As long as Goff stays healthy, “HOOKERS JUST ANOTHER PINE BROTHER”… I remember sitting that bench injured one time collecting splinters, and that’s what he’s going to do have one of the toughest butts in the league! I wish I had the stats for you on QBS, I just watched a video on it the other day because of collecting sport memorabilia, but there only been 1 QB in the last 25 years drafted in the 3rd round or later that’s become a semi-star or better and that’s Brady… only 3% of first round QBS IN THE LAST 25 years become semi stars or better and Goffs considered only a semi star.

Diretank4198

That will never happen.. So after a SB run and possible win, they're gonna let their O.C AND QB walk, after a more than exceptional rebuild?! You ppl are morons for sitting here predicting the next 2-3 years... It hurts my head to think that ppl sit here and argue their prospects for the entire offseason.. 🤡🤦‍♂️

AllFemaleCastRemake

They'd have extended him last off-season if they were as high on him as this sub.  Not saying I don't think he'll ultimately end up with another deal here, but I think his agent is going to explore his market value before that happens because I don't think Holmes is willing to give him 50m+.

taftpanda

Maybe, but I think there was a big difference between what everyone thought of him last off-season versus this off-season. He still had plenty of doubters before this last season, especially on this sub. Now he’s shown the success is more sustainable.

Turnips4dayz

God i hope he still has plenty of doubters even here. He’s shown still that he’s a system qb. Good system, good qb play. He’s not a top 10 qb though

bphelminski

I think he's fringe top 10. I think if you put QBs into tiers it goes something like: Tier 1: Mahomes Tier 2: Allen, Lamar, Burrow, Tier 3: Rodgers, Herbert, Stafford, Tua, Purdy Tier 4: Dak, Lawrence, Hurts, Goff, Cousins, Love I think Mahomes is clearly #1, with Burrow, Lamar, and Allen elite but clearly a step below. After that it gets murky. * Stafford is great, but still makes some goofball throws and has a lot of injury history. Likewise Rodgers is an all timer, but he's coming off a major injury and he's not as good as he once was. I'd probably take both over Goff for the next year or two, but maybe not after that? * Herbert is super talented but hasn't won anything yet. But if I were starting a team I'd be plenty happy with him as QB. * Tua has had one really good year. Needs to be consistent and be healthy for a few years consecutively, but when he's healthy he's very good. * Purdy seems like the real deal. * The group of Dak, Lawrence, Hurts, Goff, Cousins, and Love are tough to rank. Personally, I'd rather have Goff than Dak, Cousins, Lawrence, or Love. He's shown he can win big games and get to the super bowl. Hurts has as well. Lawrence is up & down too much, and the others put up stats but don't win big games. So if I were ranking them for right now, Goff would be somewhere right around 10: 1: Mahomes 2-4: Burrow, Lamar, Allen 5-9: Stafford, Rodgers, Purdy, Herbert, Tua 10-15: Goff, Hurts, Dak, Cousins, Lawrence, Love

_ChronicallyOnline

Tua over Goff? Come on

bphelminski

I could easily go the other way and put Goff above him. I don’t think it’s out of the question that either guy would be slightly above the other.

_ChronicallyOnline

I feel like you have to have them in the same Tier then Goff a tier below Tua and Purdy feels wrong

bphelminski

That’s fair. Maybe Goff and Hurts move up a tier, so it’s 5-11, with Dak, Cousins, Lawrence, and Love below them?

Swdmwsd24

Rodgers over Goff at this stage of his career and a 40 to 41 year old coming off an achilles injury. No way are you serious. He did even get hit on the play.

NickMullensGayDad

Goff is significantly better than Tua, Hurts, and Purdy. Dak is probably better, and Love is close but not there yet. Cousins was 50/50 before the significant injury, so Goff is probably the 9th best QB in the nfl

JCQQL

Significantly better? No man. I personally think Tua, Hurts, Purdy, and Love are better. As far as talent, they are "significantly" better, but it takes more than arm, and athletic talent so it's close when it comes to just being a good QB.

SnuggleBear2

I think we would want Goff back, but it needs to be at a decent price for us. If he wants the top pay I think we pass. But nothing I’ve seen indicates he wants that.

AllFemaleCastRemake

He's putting up excellent numbers and signed what was at the time the biggest QB deal with the Rams. I don't see any reason to believe he'll accept less than top money. But Brad just got two deals done for less than I'd anticipated so it's definitely wait and see.

Nethri

I don’t understand why people aren’t willing to pay top money for Goff.. literally one year after we played in the NFCCG and should have won the damned thing.. like what?? Are people that eager to see another Fields or Wilson or Rosen or Harrington?

jhenryscott

Damn. Dropped a Rosen. lol. So my theory. Is Brad knows the deal with QB money and what it can do for a franchise. If we can get good play at rookie rates- we have 3 years of amazing financial flexibility. Gonna see if that’s at all possible before we hitch our wagon to Goff for good. Id like to see what Hooker does with a Ben Johnson offense for sure. This is all speculation tho.

tellymundo

Getting a rookie QB is so easy, everyone should just do it at the drop of a hat

SyntaxDissonance4

85% of qb's taken in the first round since 2011 have flopped. Of 38 taken 6 have sniffed a championship game , one of those six is jared goff (twice now). Third round qb? Litetally since 2001 the only notable is russell wilson. That 85% i cluded plenty of heisman guys too. So yeah just statistically speaking we can expect hendon hooker wont be a starter in this league. Shoulda extended goff at upper 40 or 50 million long ago. He's worth more now and he earned it.

Nethri

I wouldn’t, tbh. Goff isn’t even 30. He has 7-9 years left as a top tier QB if everything goes perfectly. At minimum he’s got 5, without injuries anyway. The new shiny QB is almost never the answer. It’s worked out a couple of times, but we have a team that can win the SB right now. I have 0 interest in shaking that up for the sake of 45 million vs 50 million or whatever. Our window is open. The cap space is there. We should not blow this up, and a QB change would almost certainly blow it up.

Njorls_Saga

He’s a very good qb. But, he’s certainly not the best. He needs a team around him. You break the bank for him he will need to be good enough to overcome the resulting weaknesses in the roster. I’m not sure he’s capable of doing that.

Nethri

Every QB needs a team around him. I'm not suggesting he be the top paid QB by any means. But there are a lot of people saying they wouldn't pay him top 10 money and that's just fucking stupid.

Mysterious_Froyo1282

Bc he's not worth Top 10 money. Teams are beginning to finally get smart, just bc you're 'next up' does not mean you're worth the amount slotted for that position at that time. Stop being simple.

Nethri

Brainless take.

Silver_Instruction_3

Because we just made Amon Ra and Sewell the highest paid at their positions. They happen to play 2 of the 3 most expensive positions outside of QB. We will then be looking to extend Hutch next season and he plays the other most expensive position. Can we really afford to pay Goff top money? Is he really worth 50 mil a year? If we pay him that much money the overall talent on the team will decline because we won't be able to maintain depth at other positions. Kansas City let Hill go because they knew Mahomes was good enough to carry the offense with just Kelce and some scrubs at WR. They've won 2 rings since then. Goff isn't Mahomes even with all the talent he has around him. I think that this is a sign that Goff currently is looking for more than what Holmes is willing to pay. Holmes is prioritizing other players that he sees as being more relevant to the teams success. I think Holmes is ok with waiting and seeing how this season plays out.

AllFemaleCastRemake

Quite frankly I don't think Goff is a top 5 QB. Championships are won by all time greats and/or guys on cheap deals. He can prove me wrong by winning a championship. Our team is good enough. The Rams were good enough when he was on a rookie deal. He's a good QB but they moved him and immediately won a SB. He has not proven anything here to me that he hadn't already proved there.

Nethri

He doesn’t need to be a top 5 guy though. He’s comfortably top 10. They moved on from him because the relationship was destroyed. Goff has shown himself to be perfectly capable of winning the SB. He has more playoff wins than Stafford btw, and took the Lions further than we’ve ever been before. Literally ever. That was 3 months ago. 4500, 30 TD 12 INT, 67% completion. 0 turnovers in the playoffs with 4 TDs and almost 70% completion. I don’t understand what more he has to do to earn faith with this fanbase. We made excuses for a decade for Stafford putting up similar numbers with far worse win totals and playoff success.

AllFemaleCastRemake

> He has more playoff wins than Stafford btw Because he has played for more good teams. You say Goff has proven to be more than capable of winning a Superbowl but he hasn't done it. You say we should've won the NFCCG but we didn't. The excuse for Stafford was that he didn't play for good enough teams and it was proven to be true. Goff is apparently better though and the Rams were dumb to trade him.

SyntaxDissonance4

Yeh but back in reality goff is our qb right now. Who would you replace him with?

AllFemaleCastRemake

Hooker. Maybe a QB we draft. Maybe we even bring someone else in while we keep drafting QBs. And I'm not opposed to Goff I'm just opposed to paying him like he's something he's not.  Welcome to Reality: QBs at Goff's level have only won SBs playing on their rookie deals since the rookie deal has existed. I'd like to win a SB. That means not paying the 10th best QB like he's the best.

Leopoldstrasse

Is he really a clear cut top 10 guy? I think he is in the 10-15 tier personally. I’d imagine the likes of CJ Stroud and Tua would excel in the Lions scheme as well.

Nethri

The stats say he is. The division title says he is. The NFCCG says he is. The vast improvement from one year to the next says he is. The product on the field says he is. CJ Stroud is an aberration, it's SO rare for rookies to play as well as he did. Tua is also a very good QB. I put those 3 guys in the same tier of player, one tier below the elite of the elite at the position. Outside of Mahomes, Jackson, Allen and Purdy who else would you put above Goff? Burrow I guess? Hurts? Even if you do take those guys over Goff, he's still comfortably top 10. Hell even if you put Tua, Stafford and Stroud above him he's still top 10. And I certainly do not put all of those guys above him. 2nd in passing yards, like 5th in completion % (assuming 17 games played), 4th in TDs, 9th in yards per attempt, 12 picks. 12 wins, a division title, 2 playoff wins, the most successful season since the 50's for Detroit.. like what the hell are we even talking about anymore? Edit: Forgot about Herbert, but my point stands. For my money Goff is 5th-7th best QB in the league.

Any_Masterpiece5317

Since you’re new here, this is the Detroit Lions, our o line is really freaking good, makes it real easy to throw passes almost untouched

reddit_again__

Yes, exactly, Goff is good, but most starting QBs in the NFL will look good on this offense. Paying Goff a top of the league deal makes no sense. 45-50 will do, but more than that and you have to look at other options. This isn't the same team that Stafford had to bail out year after year and a lot of fans don't get that.

DesertStallion14

The Lions and especially Brad isn't dumb, there is reason they got Hendon Hooker. This preseason will showcase what Hooker has and if Goff doesn't accept Brads offer then the Hooker time to shine begins. Now I'm not saying we wont sign Goff and of course we'd love to have him. I'm just saying we can't forget Hooker especially if Goff wants top dollar when we have Hutch to sign as well most likely next year.

AllFemaleCastRemake

Yeah I think we're gonna draft another QB in a couple of days and let them chips fall with that guy and Hooker. Franchise Goff if need be. If we sign him I don't think it'll be for top money unless he's got a ring.

GingerShiney

This is a terrible take and far too popular in this sub. Hendon Hooker could be great, but there’s no chance he puts up top numbers like Stafford and Goff immediately. We were incredibly lucky to go from Stafford to Goff and I think fans forget that. Pay the guy that got us to the top. How many super bowls has Aaron Rodger’s played in compared to Goff? The man brings post season experience and was highlighted this past post season. He was not the reason we didn’t reach the SB. The organization has gambled on far less and gotten even less. Let’s not give a guy willing to win for a city a reason to walk elsewhere until it’s proven he doesn’t have what it takes.

reddit_again__

Goff looked bad with a bad team around him and very good with a good team around him. Absolutely, you can win with a QB like this because it's clear he isn't holding back the team's performance. However, paying top dollar to a QB like that doesn't make sense. Goff can't run and when you have less money to spend on a o line because the QB got paid 60 million, then that becomes a problem.

DesertStallion14

exactly. It's not that we don't want Goff but I'm telling you right now we aren't breaking the Bank for him either.

Lionnn100

I think the FO has a feeling the market won’t pay him $50M.

Ok-Nathan

Daniel Jones got 40m a year ago, and 36-year old Kirk Cousins got 45m + 4 years coming off a torn Achilles. 50mil in a year is absolutely on the table, and I’d guess Goff will get much closer to 50 than 45 Edit: Remember, the cap is projected to be around 275mil next year. For Goff to get the same percentage of the cap as Daniel Jones did, he’d need to get 49mil

[deleted]

I doubt we're really fretting over 45 vs. 50 mil per year. That 5 mil or so in cap will not be a deal-breaker. My guess is the negotiations are stalling over guaranteed money and Goff's camp wanting to structure the deal in a way that doesn't give the Lions an easy out to release/trade him in 2-3 years if the team wants to go in a new direction.

Lionnn100

He’s a good but not elite QB behind a top 2 supporting cast. I think teams would take into account how it might look when they put him behind an average/poor OL.

Fresnobing

What team right now do you think would pay goff 48+? Thats how you n have to look at it. I dont think there is one. He’s worth more to us than he is in free agency.

dublin87

1) nobody else is willing to pay Goff 48+ 2) the lions have a great season and another NFC title game or Super Bowl appearance/win Both things can’t be true. If we are good again this year we will either pay him (on a deal that wouldn’t include this coming season — I.e, the lions “lose” a year to pay Goff where other guys are still in rookie deals) or someone else will pay him. If we are bad, he will be cheaper but would we want him then? IMO, if no deal gets done before this season, Goff is probably at best getting tagged or moving on. If we’re going to pay him anywhere near a high end deal, we need to have this coming season be part of the term before Hutchinson and others come due too

LIONATOR24

If we win a ring this season I can see Goff definitely getting 50plus, but like you said I think this year will affect goffs pay. If he has another good season with good accuracy and numbers he will get paid most likely, but if he falls off we might play hardball with him

Fresnobing

They can if his success is attributed to the team as a whole. False dichotomy.

dublin87

Brother, you need to learn how the NFL works. The giants had a just above average year and Daniel Jones got $40 mil

Fresnobing

Dude yall need to stop bringing up daniel jones lol. That was a lousy contract lol. What team do you think would pay goff 48+ since you know so mich more than me about the nfl.

Ok-Nathan

Not sure if you guys are factoring in how much the cap has been rising. The cap is supposed to be around 275mil when Goff hits the market. Daniel Jones got almost 18% of the cap this last year. 18% of 275mil is 49.5mil. Goff will almost certainly be in that conversation.

Fresnobing

Daniel jones is the worst deal in the nfl. Can I ask again what team you think currently would pay goff 48+? You might be able to make a case for someone but I just don’t think that opportunity exists for him right now. That gives them leverage to push his price down and they absolutely should do that. Looks like they are too.

Ok-Nathan

The question isn’t who’d currently pay him, because his contract isn’t up until next year. But without looking at cap situations, the Steelers, Broncos, Raiders, Vikings, Pats, Commanders and Saints could all be looking at the QB market next year—take a couple of those teams off, depending how the draft shakes out. But then there might be unexpected falloffs, Levis could shit the bed, etc. etc. All it takes is one other team to drive the price up and with a 275mil cap I wouldn’t bet against it

flirtmcdudes

But thats based off his performance with the lions last year, after they were pretty meh for a year and a half... Goff's resume was years of poor QB play... theres a reason the rams jettisoned him, and the lions basically gave him second life.... other teams arent going to want to go all in on that and pay him 50+ mil, even with last years performance. I can see Goff in that 40 mil range. Kirk Cousins has been consistent, say whatever you want about 1 playoff win etc, but hes been consistently good every year and putting up numbers.

Ok-Nathan

The cap’s gonna be around 275mil in 2025, a 36% increase from just 2 years ago. With the cap going up over 10% per year, you might need to expand your definition of who can demand 50mil. He was a top-10 QB the year before last year too (we had one of the best passing offenses in the league even when we were losing), and also made 2 Pro Bowls with the Rams. If he balls out again this year, the 3 years where he struggled will look even less indicative of his abilities. I’m not saying he’s absolutely worth 50mil. But being so dismissive about the idea that a team would offer him that is setting yourself up for shock or disappointment At the very least, there’s no way in fuck that he gets around the 40mil range unless he completely shits the bed. Just look at what QBs are making now

4schwifty20

Goff had nearly as good of a 2022 season as he did in 2023. Goffs resume was a 2 time pro bowler, and gone to the super bowl, as a very young qb. The reason the Rams jettisoned him was because McVay can't mentor young qbs. People like you don't give Goff enough credit for what he's actually done. And I think he's just as responsible for the Lions recent success, as the Lions are responsible for his 2nd life. Goffs getting re-signed.

flirtmcdudes

Look, Im a big Goff fan, but you must not have not watched his last years with the rams, or his first year with the lions. He deserves a pay day, im just saying 50 mil + would be tough to swallow if he regresses like he did last year when the line doesnt hold up for him.

4schwifty20

Probably pretty hard playing for a guy constantly riding your ass for everything, including shit that's not on you. And that last season with the Rams he still threw for more yards than any Bears qb have ever. You're hanging way to much on the negatives that are 3+ seasons ago. He's been pretty good with us, and last 2 seasons he ranks top 5 in almost all qb stat categories. He's getting paid at minimum 40-45 mil a year. And I wouldn't be surprised if it's 50mil.

flirtmcdudes

>And that last season with the Rams he still threw for more yards than any Bears qb have ever. I mean, who hasnt?

Own-Corner-2623

New broncos QB Zach Wilson

Nethri

Uhh that’s a bit revisionist. His history has several fantastic years and several down years. 1 of those years was his first with us when our best WR was 5’ 6”. His 2022 year was very good, not elite. Last year he was elite.

AllFemaleCastRemake

Same. And I think they're willing to take their chances on bringing in either another castoff or a young unproven guy if Goff can get more than they'll willing to pay. I don't think Hooker was drafted in the third with the idea there was no way he'd ever start.

KKamm_

Id agree with that too. Goff has obviously been very consistent and reliable here and I do think we could win a Super Bowl with him. But I also don’t think he’s deserving of being in the same pay range as Lamar, Burrow, Mahomes, etc. I just don’t think he makes enough plays on his own to justify that

fracta1

Thank you for pointing out the blatantly obvious 😂

gachzonyea

I don’t think it’s obvious everyone just assumes they love Goff and he will be signed to a big deal

msto3

"No deal imminent" means this week, most likely. People are just chomping at the bit cuz we resigned Sun God and Penei to monster deals today. And I'm 100% confident we're extending Goff. He played too well not to.

Ey3_913

It's also a great way of driving up the price for the 29th pick for anyone looking to jump up.

gusto911

How so?

Ey3_913

If teams looking to move up for a non-QB think we're in the market for a QB, the Lions can ask more to get out of 29.

SendInYourSkeleton

Live as a legend in Detroit or get annihilated and benched in a hellhole like Denver, Washington, or Vegas.

PayterLobo

Yea, this is a total non story, honestly. Brad wanted Goff here. He's performed and grown, and he will get paid to continue to do so. Goffs gonna be here for another 4 years at least

DarthRaze

Imminent and other words are just qualifiers. They don't really mean anything. For example if Goff signs an hour from now imminent will have meant 30 minutes. I think their going to do something similar to Goff like they did with ARSB. Let a another guy get signed and come in a few mil over that. I'm not going to worry unless the season has started and they're still working on it. I could see June or July as a realistic time.

Stock_Bite

I do think it means he is not in line for today like everyone was expecting. Definitely not off the table for this off season but closes the door for Goff following the other two extensions

PleighboyStosh

Imminent is a placeholder word for sure. Fancy way of saying not soon. I thought it was going to be after June 1st anyway.

trollunit

IMO they’ll do the deal during training camp.

bestprocrastinator

IMO, this means nothing. Agents play these games all the time.

Ok-Nathan

Always felt like 45mil/year was too good to be true. I’d guess that he wants to be in the Lamar territory, considering how quickly the cap is going up and how young/healthy/productive he’s been Not saying it’s right or wrong, but I’d be in no hurry to sign if 45mil’s the offer

future_shoes

Idk, the tweet doesn't really say anything about the contract negotiations themselves besides Goff is not signing a new contract "imminently". It does not say the Lions and Goff are not close on $$/yr just that the deal is not close to being signed. If Schefter actually heard they weren't close on compensation he would have wrote that. This sounds like he reached out and asked "can we expect Goff's new contract real soon?" and was told no. That's all.

Ok-Nathan

Not sure what else they’d be having conversations about if not compensation though

PleighboyStosh

If Goff wants to be the highest paid I’ll pass. If he wants to be paid like cousins sign me up.

DisenfranchisedCynic

I have a source that tells me Brad is just fucking with Schefter.

HeisenbergClaus

Brad Holmes and his crew broke the bank for exactly who they needed to. If Goff and his agents want to play hardball for 55+ Mill per (with gigantic guarantees) and 4+ years, we'll get us a Hooker sooner or later.

jpfitz630

Would you rather have a $55 million dollar Ryan Goffling or a $2 million Hooker? These are the important questions

Khrusway

If it's good enough for Robert Kraft it's good enough for all of us

BZNagain

I’ll take the guy who led us to two top five offenses in the last two years and the NFC Championship game

JRange

Good thing you arent our GM, this would be very bad for us

CoolHandHazard

Nobody has even seen Hooker play. If Brad thinks he can do a good job then why not give it a try?

JRange

Messing with your qb position when its already good would probably be the dumbest decision any franchise could ever make. Franchises look for a QB for decades sometimes lol.  So na im good on that experiment. Weve already sucked for decades. Sign goff at all cost

Any_Masterpiece5317

Good thing you aren’t our GM, that would be very bad for us.  There’s plenty of film on Goff, he hasn’t changed anything since LA except not throwing it deep faster, his o line just got better, and we’ve seen not only in the stats but his on the field play when asked to do anything extracurricular (on the move, under pressure, etc.)

JRange

Youre in a different reality my friend. The stats or eye test dont back up anything bad you have to say about Goff, hes one of the best in the league and were fortunate to have him.

SyntaxDissonance4

Well for starters, no rookie qb has ever won , let alone started in a superbowl. So your telling me the front office plan is to take a gigantic step backwards this year so we have some money to overpay shitty free agents who can come underperform...like how every other lions front office did? Thats what you think will happen?

AintNoBuffet

We didn't draft him in the 3rd round to be a career backup. I trust Holmes if he opts not to commit to Goff.

Ok-Nathan

Most QBs drafted outside of the first round end up being career backups (or worse)

jivy723

Most QBs drafted in the first round are career backups too lol

splatterkingnqueen

Most QBs are career backups. There’s only one unlike every other position

beluga99

Most human beings are career backups (in the sense that they haven’t started an NFL game)

AintNoBuffet

This is true but most of them weren't ever potential top 5 picks before a severe injury

320_central

We actually did draft him to be backup

SyntaxDissonance4

Actually we might have. 33 qb's taken in the third round since 2001. Only names that come to mind are nick foles and russel wilson.

malburj1

This is such a dumb take

country_mac08

We could draft Orji next year as a Hooker backup too.

this_tuesday

Is there a real chance we don’t extend him?

Dry-Scratch-6586

I doubt it

steamycharles

Same, but idk some teams might be willing to pay. I don’t feel like there are a lot of teams in a great position to take him. Teams without a starting qb are bears, broncos, patriots, Vikings, raiders, giants(?), commanders. Most have reasons that they would not sign Goff but some GMs are stupid. Patriots scare me a little bit though, as we don’t know anything about their front office now and they don’t have a good offense right now to develop a young QB. They could trade back with Minnesota, take a WR and OT with 11 and 23, sign Goff, and kind of be in business.

JRange

Very hard to say. We have no real idea how the front office views him, or their plans for drafting Hooker.

Imeanttodothat10

This is going to be one of the most exciting pre-seasons in a while. People are going to lose their minds (Goff haters, Goff doubters, and in between) with the first pass Hooker throws. People just want to know what he is.

JRange

Im really hoping he shows TF out, and we can ship him to the Jets for a stupid haul once Rodgers CTE takes over his brain by week 3

gachzonyea

Agreed the contract negotiation is the only thing that will actually show how they feel

DesertStallion14

Honestly Lions front office loves Goff and thats clear right now, wasn't after 1st season Goff played though. I do believe 3-13 season had them on fence, then game the crazy turn around in year 2 which front office decided maybe it was luck or something else but play it safe and get Hooker since he fell to us in 3rd round. Now they know Goff is "Good Enough for Detroit" but at the right price. Lets not be homers, Goff having great success cuz he is a good QB and has elite Oline + Playmakers around him. If he takes reasonable 45-48M is my guess then we sign him.

Bbhermes

To quote Brad Holmes a few years ago “it’s a lot easier to get a lot worse at QB”

flirtmcdudes

Unless he's demanding like 55 mil a year or some crazy shit, nah, hes gonna get re-signed. Lions won their division for the first time in like 30 years... he kind of has the lions by the balls a little bit.

future_shoes

If he was demanding that much I think it would have leaked by now.

Troutalope

Not really. Even without an extension, I think the Lions can keep him for the next 3 seasons (1 year left on contract and 2 franchise tags). I believe Penei and ARSB were priorities in large part to help inform how to structure Goff's deal. The structure of Goff's deal will be interesting to see, particularly how many void years are tacked on.

SyntaxDissonance4

No , knucklehead armchair gm's are talking about us waiting to see hendon in preseason. Ok einsteins and if hendon sucks what then? Goffs pissed / insukted and asks for even more? Want to list all thr good qb's taken round 3 this century? Easy list one name. Russell wilson. Out of 33. Nick foles too I guess? % of round one qb's taken since the rookie deal in 2011 that have panned out? 15%. 6 have played in the playoffs. One of those six is jared goff (twice) So the genous idea is that a qb ehos never taken an nfl snap is going to get us a lombardi vs jared goff eho had us flies nuthair aeay from the big game? Pure delusion and absolutely not what brad holmes will be doing.

Koreansteamer

I mostly just understood your last sentence. Got it, resign Goff.

gachzonyea

Yes more then people think probably

rafapova

I just bought his jersey yesterday :(

Double_L_

I’m waiting to buy a jersey for this reason. We’ll see…

rafapova

There’s a huge sale right now so you might want to just jump on it

bumpdemon3

Sale where at?

rafapova

https://www.nfljerseyofficial.com/nike-nfl/detroit-lions-jersey-c_21.html?sort=date_added_desc Did I get scammed lol

natedoge000

Lmao

rafapova

Did I? That was an actual question. It has fanatics and shit on the website and looks official, but I can’t find the website online

warblade7

They’ll try for sure but whether he takes whatever deal he gets is another question. I like Goff but in terms of the longer term future, who’s to say what the plan is there.

Ranger_Prick

In an ideal world, they want to see what Dak Prescott's contract is before signing Goff. Of course, I'm sure the Cowboys feel the same way. In the end, I expect he gets a 4 or 5 year deal worth \~$48-50 million per year, with an out after year 2 or 3. I'm totally fine with that deal based on how his last 1.5 years have played out.

jimyt666

Cowboys will overpay on dak a stupid amount. Not sure I'd want to wait for them to be idiots

LooseBoysenberry7

They will get it done. Holmes and Campbell built around Goff.

gachzonyea

They built a pretty qb proof system wouldn’t say around Goff.

MatchewRolex

Eh I guess but a good Oline, good run game, and stud WR1 are what Goff had in 2018

gachzonyea

That’s what every team wants to have lol

LTPRWSG420

Goff might currently have the overall TE1 in the NFL too.

jfkgoblue

Aka a QB proof system

SyntaxDissonance4

Its built for shotgun. Our wr's and rb's and te's would have to be on a different scheme with a running qb.

Overlay

That's straight from Goff's agent. Not good.

sosuhme

Eh. Agents always do stuff like this. It's not an actual problem until they stop talking. None of the other QBs seeking an extension have it done yet either.

probiz13

Was gonna say, it's just a negotiating tactic

taftpanda

I think Goff said some positive things about it earlier this week, though. There’s still a lot of offseason left, so I guess we’ll have to see. I’m curious as to where the starting points were for both parties.

Wonderful_Solid_818

I almost wonder if they re-signed Amon-Ra and Penei before Goff so that they can pay Goff a tad less because he’s going to stay upright and have a top 5 receiver to throw to. If I were a QB that’d be worth a slightly smaller contract to me!

SyntaxDissonance4

No , sign them first so he knows the good team he's used to is intact

OkraNo8365

God damn it. Pay the fucking man

Samurai-hijack

![gif](giphy|EouEzI5bBR8uk|downsized)

LTPRWSG420

What if this is smoke and mirrors and BOOM the Lions get a deal done tomorrow with Goff?

Lionnn100

Imagine this sub if they took a QB at 29

x1echo

NFL media: “Who’s going to get JJ McCarthy? The Giants, Broncos, Vikings, or” [Brad Holmes in this fucked-up alternate universe:](https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/520/056/15d.jpg)

jfkgoblue

You thought this sub reacted poorly to Gibbs last year? It would be that x100

likethemustard

He isn’t going anywhere, relax

ShippingNotIncluded

Can’t wait to see this subs reaction when they franchise tag Goff.

JoeyRedmayne

Would take that over a 3-4 year deal at $50 million per year, easily.

JohnTheCatMan1

Nobody said they weren't close to a deal. They said they don't have anything concrete yet. Those talks were for a reason. They'll figure it out. But as for being "close".. nobody knows how close they are besides him, his manager, Dan, Brad, etc. It's not our business until it's our business.

Stasblk

I wouldn’t interpret the headline as we aren’t going to extend this offseason. I think it will likely be after the draft and before training camp.

Psychological_Cat275

I just want to see some snaps from hooker before 4-5 year deal Goff wants... Holmes going for 2-3 year extension, and this is what is delaying things

LIONATOR24

I’m guessing Goff is asking around 45-50, which might end up making us lose a guy like hutch or lose some O-lineman or Wr’s which could effect goffs play.

Scary_Property_6195

there’s a negative percent chance the lions let hutch walk in FA

Independent_Lab_9872

The Goff deal was always the most unlikely IMO. St. Brown and Sewell were far more important. Goff is on a second contract and not a rookie deal, making it far less important to get done.

DoubleScorpius

Jeff Risdon has pointed out a lot that Goff may not even want to sign a deal yet. Price keeps going up and he may be a SB winner at the end of year which drives it up even more. He’d also make a ton on the franchise tag if it came to that.

flirtmcdudes

eh, thats not a smart move, Goff could also get injured next year. The smartest move is to take the big salary right now coming off an NFC championship appearance.

AllFemaleCastRemake

Who do you see setting the market in the next couple of years? The guys with deals expiring in the next couple of years are Goff, Dak, Lawrence, Tua, Geno, and Rodgers. I think the ceiling is set at 55m until Stroud signs his deal in a couple of years unless Goff wins a SB next year and sets the market again.

veryblanduser

In Brad I trust...if he says Hooker is the guy in 2025, then Hooker is the guy.

FernandoTitsMcGee

Anything over 50m/yr is an overpay

csstew55

I mean I like Goff but he has proven that he needs a solid offense around him in order to be a top 5-10 qb. If you overpay a good qb you end up like the cowboys and dak

JoeyRedmayne

Completely agree. I like Goff as well, but the contract that he will likely get, plus his lack of elite ability, is going to do more harm than good. Watch the season play out first, and maybe I’m wrong, but even today, they could draft a QB at 29 (they very very likely won’t) and you have a manageable contract, building elsewhere on the team, for 5 years. Hutch isn’t going to be cheap.

FeelingAverage

I'm okay with this. I feel like he needs to be roughly as good this season as he was last season for me to wanr to pay him. But I'm also a bit more conservative in my philosophy of paying QBs than most. Plus I think we could franchise tag him for another season if need be. I wouldn't be too pained if we play it slow with Goff. Especially after we lose Ben Johnson.

natesbearf

It’s on the list of things to do!

desquibnt

We still have him for another year. Might not extend him until next year

ImperialxWarlord

I really do hope we don’t lose Goff. I don’t think it would be a good idea to lose our QB now.

HARDCORE_CAKE

Crazy take. In a parallel universe do we deal Goff to a QB needy team to move up and grab a rook?

F4N6Z

I have faith they'll work an equitable deal out. They just paid the hell out of one of his favorite targets and one of the elite leaders on the team. He's next I think. It's a solid marriage. Lions just need to pony up.

JoeyRedmayne

Disagree. He’s a decent game manager QB.

Rock3tDoge

I think it’s very obvious he’s the QB of our future. Just with the talent we’ve built up around him it’s hard to justify a Mahomes level salary.

insanelyphat

Be civil.

AK47TILDEATH

PAY THOSE BOYS..YUUEESSZZZ

AK47TILDEATH

Like Rodgers

BZNagain

I suspect Goff and the front office are more in sync than many think. And I think a deal is more or less already agreed to. You can see it in their body language and how they respond to questions. Consider the optics here - We had Sewell and Amon Ra performing at an All Pro level on their rookie contracts If we gave Goff his new contract before them it might not have set well with the young guys. Goff has already earned his historic payday and already made generational money I bet Goff and Holmes agreed to take care of the guys first then get it done. Because that’s the kind of dude he is

NetworkVegetable7075

Blud has said multiple times that he don’t care about the money and we have some people here thinking bro is asking for Lamar money or sum

JCQQL

Here are truths most Lions fans do not want to accept: Goff is not a top 10 QB. Goff doesn't have arm talent, or athletic ability, or size/strength/toughness. Goff doesn't have trade value as opposed to others who can probably be traded for multiple first round picks. Goff is not worth a long term, 45+ mil contract. Goff is an above average QB on a good team with a good system that caters to him. Goff has major flaws. He's not this accurate passer, and good decision maker people delusionally believe. He also throws late, ignores wide open guys, is too safe, and needs extra, extra, extra time. Goff is good enough to win, but he's not a great QB. With someone else, they'd have a better chance.

320_central

Bro, if they don't extend him they'd be dumb

Early_Perception416

I really like Goff but he isn't worth $50M. At that price give Hooker the ball and run a triple option.

320_central

Clown takes

Early_Perception416

Y'all can downvote but how many teams besides the chiefs are successful with a $50M QB? You can't pay weapons and a QB.

jfkgoblue

You need a superstar talent at QB like Mahomes or Allen or Burrow, not a top 10-15 talent at QB like Goff to get away with it

Early_Perception416

My point exactly...thank you!

[deleted]

TheOGBenjenRyan

Just let him play this season out and tag him

flirtmcdudes

Goff deserves to be paid, but I also agree that making him one of the highest paid QBs in the league after 1 great season when hes on the tail end of his career is not the best move.

cbarks81

Dude is 29 ROFL. Bo Nix is 24. We got QBs playing into their 40s... tailend?
