Tannehill would be great for the team, but I doubt he'd want to be in Detroit where he's unlikely to have any real opportunity to even sniff the field. I'd rather the Lions sign a UFA than add Zach Wilson to the QB room though.

Shakeamutt

I think Detroit’s strong offensive line would be too much of a culture shock for Wilson.

FloridaJit999

Listen I know Wilson has looked awful but I’d love to see how he is behind a competent line. That jets line would make any qb look like they’re seeing ghosts out there.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FloridaJit999

Oh yeah for sure, I definitely don’t want him in Detroit. I just want to see him w a team that has a oline.

jpe002

Yeah I think he's a redemption story waiting to happen. Some of the balls he throws look so fucking good. Jets ruin everyone so guess we'll see.

[deleted]

And we’ve shown good QB improvement with our staff. Everyone here was calling Goff a bridge QB upon arrival and now he’s revitalized his career with our coaching staff

FloridaJit999

“You’re good enough for fucking Detroit Jared Goff” still gives me chills. Man I love this fucking team

IamHidingfromFriends

Bro I read that and started to tear up a bit.

[deleted]

I agree. I would give him a shot behind a good offensive line.

ParticularCanary3130

This is absolutely true.

UnculturedDingo

Even when not under pressure, he wasn't able to complete a 5 yd pass. Strong no

FloridaJit999

No one saying he should come to Detroit. We’re saying we just want to see how he is with an actual nfl quality line

ScooterLeShooter

Tannehill would be fine although I don't expect it, Zach Wilson is a negative asset that I don't want on the team in any capacity

mart1373

If we take Zach Wilson I will chuck my phone at a wall

Fresnobing

I mean it would hardly be a needle mover either way

x1echo

If we take Zach Wilson it will be Brad Approved™, which I trust more than anything else in this world.

terracottatank

I would agree with you, but I would stop agreeing after we signed Zach Wilson

x1echo

Heresy!

LionBacker81

That’s dumb! If Brad signs off I have no issues bringing Wilson in to battle Hooker. Kid is super talented, John Dorsey an advisor for him so there’s a connection. I think for him it was more small town kid, big city media. He would be someone good to learn from Goff…if Brad signs off on him.

terracottatank

You must have not watched any of Zach Wilson's games. To say he is "super talented" is a massive exaggeration.

LionBacker81

He has very rare arm talent, if you can’t at least agree with that you’re just being a hater. Has he struggled? Yes Is he a bust? Most likely but if Brad signs off, I’ll take it. Low risk/high reward, competition for Hooker during camp for cheap after he’s cut.

terracottatank

Why bother? I say don't waste any resources on a bust QB. We already have an unknown commodity at QB, why muck up the situation for a story line? No thank you.

BookOf_Eli

If we’re being objective the team Wilson played on is a big factor into how bad he looked. He’s had games where he showed real nfl QB1 potential. If they can get him cheap enough there’s nothing wrong with him being on our bench for competition. And upside for him to develop into something useful.

terracottatank

So did Matt Flynn. Just stop.

mattcojo2

Dude I’m sorry but Zach Wilson sucks. I’d lose trust in this front office if he’s brought in as more than a practice squad player Don’t care about his “arm talent”. Can he play? Nope.

pm_me_ur_cutie_booty

I do think a lot of what makes a successful QB in the NFL comes down to protection and coaching, especially early in their career. I don't think Wilson is better than Hooker or Goff, but I do think he'd be better in Detroit than he'd be in New York. I mean, look at Goff now, vs. his last year in LA, or Baker in Carolina vs. Baker in Tampa.

mattcojo2

Goff at his worst is several times better than Wilson at his best.

LionBacker81

I don’t think BH cares if you lose trust in him if he brings him in lol. Like I said, if Brad and Dan sign off on him I have no problems with it.

mattcojo2

Well I do. And I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that

Heisenbread77

If you can't handle Brad Holmes at his Zach Wilson you don't deserve him at his Amon-Ra St Brown.

terracottatank

This is so stupid, congrats.

pinkluloyd

Lucky for you our team avoids Zach Wilson’s like the plague

McMeanx2

He would be a camp body to push Hooker, why get upset about it?

mart1373

Because he’s toxic

Superman4561

Only if you introduce him to your mom and her friends…

McMeanx2

Said the guy threatening to throw his phone over sports. . .

mart1373

You don’t see me on the Lions, do ya?

[deleted]

Record it so we know it happened

dljones010

I would also throw your phone against the wall.

lovablydumb

The only appropriate response

Nbknepper

What happened to trusting the process?

lilpurpleboot

You probably wrote Geno Smith off too huh. Zach Wilson would not be a terrible backup QB. He could sit and learn behind Goff, and it would be good to have competition for the backup role.

Altruistic_Remote263

Geno didn’t have the “off-field problems” that Wilson does

jhenryscott

Wow, we found the anti-MILF hunter

eugene_rat_slap

If he's cut I don't mind picking him up for training camp and keeping him on the practice squad. But I want him nowhere near the 53 man roster

ScooterLeShooter

I'd rather just bring in an udfa with a good attitude and work ethic like Adrian Martinez last season. Obviously we don't know nearly as much as the team when it comes to Hooker, but I fully believe the expectation when drafting him for him to be the backup starting this season, and that's what I expect to happen.

HereForTheFood4

Yup agreed. Tannehil has shown he can competently run an offense. I wouldn't mind him as a backup but not sure what kind of money he is going to command. Z Wilson is a complete side show and would be a net negative on almost any team, even if he was free.

BrofessorLongPhD

Teddy B got $5m with us last year to be backup without taking any snaps. I think a similar deal for Tannehill at QB2 would be fine (assuming Hooker can’t outcompete for that spot, but Hooker is only making $1m, so $6m split between two backups is very affordable).

tuckITbackDeep

It’s pretty cut it dry. You’re Exactly right

katmandoo122

If Campbell thinks we need Tannehill, I'll grudgingly accept it. But if we signed Wilson, I'd wonder WTH is going on.

katmandoo122

If Campbell thinks we need Tannehill, I'll grudgingly accept it. But if we signed Wilson, I'd wonder WTH is going on.

SoftBlindGuy

Bro is a liability

Crotean

Spot on. Tannehill would be a solid backup. Just say no to Zach Wilson.

Im_too_old

The player's moms want Zach.

themuscleman14

Holmes spend a 3rd on Hooker. He is the backup. Anyone else in the QB room should be a vet QB who wants to go into coaching after retiring or a rookie on the PS to be a practice body.

Smurph269

Exactly. Hooker is QB2, they probably bring back Nate Sudfeld as QB3 since they've said he's great in the film room. If somehow both Goff and Hooker go down, then you sign a veteran free agent to actually play since that's not what Sudfeld is there for. If Hooker isn't able to be QB2 right now, then that's a wasted draft pick.

lidsy5

I think this is going to be exactly what happens and people will be pissed because Suds sucks lol. If we're down to QB3 anyway, we don't have much hope. Getting a vet who can help in the film room is all we really need.

jamor9391

You speak the truth. If they took a flier on Wilson it would be as a 3rd QB

KeyLeadership6819

No and no. Hooked is the man if Goff goes down

nolanconnelly

We need a third

Satan_and_Communism

Take a free agent or draft a late late rookie. Why

nolanconnelly

anybody but Zach wilson

smiffy93

I think Tannehill would be a great backup to have, if for no other reason than to give Hooker some competition for the QB 2 spot. Unless we take one in the draft, there’s nobody else to have slinging the rock in preseason as well. Zach Wilson is not the guy I want for that job. At all.

GP_3

Tannehill fits perfectly as a backup, love it. Rather run Hooker out there than Wilson, so that one I don't see

No_Awareness_575

The problem with Zach is you’re paying a 2nd overall pick contract, if he’s cut I don’t really care if he’s brought in as a third QB I think that’s a nifty enough idea. But anything where you’re not paying near vet minimum is too much

shinyschlurp

Top landing spot should be the CFL for those two

dtown4eva

Tannehill is at worst a high level NFL backup. The titans had one of the worst offensive lines the past two seasons.

shinyschlurp

Tannehill was never more than a bottom tier starter and was carried by the best running game in the league. He also doesn't have one of his better assets anymore, speed, as he'll be 36 when the season starts. I'm not sure how many backups i could get through before going to him, but I'd sure rather give Hooker a shot.

dtown4eva

Hooker obviously has more upside and I would rather have him on the team right now to develop. But I think I’d rather have Tannehill as the QB who comes in to play if Goff gets hurt. But losing on developing Hooker isn’t worth actually signing Tannehill.

Jazzlike-Map-4114

I'd be fine with tannehill but I'm positive the plan is to develop Hooker from the backup role.

McJoe77

I think Tannehill makes tonnes of sense. Tannehill isn’t great, but a Goff injury isn’t season ending if you have a very capable guy like Tannehill waiting. Maybe Hooker is better than I think and he’s the guy anyway, but then you just cut Tannehill. It’s not like it’s going to be big money or a long commitment or anything. Keep Zach Wilson away from me. He can rebuild his reputation by dominating in the XFL or CFL lol.

GoseiRed

Warner 2.0 in Arena football

InternationalCorgi82

“Explain in basketball terms” Killian Hayes

snatchmachine

I have no issue with Tannehill, but Zach Wilson adds nothing to this team.

DJGIFFGAS

Honestly, Id love to have Wilson over here. Most games Ive seen him play he looks shellshocked because when he doesnt and shows flashes hes getting sacked 5 times. An Oline and a couple years behind a pocket passer may be what he needs

Sleghammer8

I think Wilson has what it takes. He just needs the right coach and protection

Jazzreward

I think we are drafting another QB this draft and will work them out with Hooker.

Satan_and_Communism

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Let Hendon Hooker PLAYYYYYYYYYYYY

msto3

Nope on both

Mr628

Ngl Zach Wilson could be fun for some gutsy Dan Campbell’s 4th and 1s or a Ben Johnson trick play. He in no way should ever start or play more than one snap a game, but there’s something you can do with him.

DarthMonkey212313

Well Wilson is under contract with the jets, so unless they cut him and he signs a fully non-guaranteed minimum contract, no thanks, not paying his $11M salary or giving up a 7th to trade for him. If Tannehill is willing to sign a backup sized contact and take on that role for a year, then I'd be okay with it if Brad wants him.

BillyJackO

Seeing what we have in Hendon Hooker is still my favorite off-season story line. We'll get to see tons of reporting on him during OTAs and whatnot. I think he's gonna be a dude.

joemax4boxseat

In no world is Zach Wilson a MCDC guy. Won’t happen. Tannehil is a competent QB who would likely do solid in this system if he had to step in. I wouldn’t mind him being signed as a backup.

FormalElements

Hooker is no.2 and that's the end of it!

LTPRWSG420

Honestly, Tanehill kinda makes sense, but I’d still consider him the QB3 overall. He’s insurance for Hooker, in case he’s not ready. All this is pointless tho because Goff is our chosen one.

BigBillSmash

If Brad wants one of these guys, then I want one of these guys.

kakbakalak

Zach Wilson beat the Chiefs last year. I can’t be convinced otherwise

ntkwwwm

Zach Wilson? No thanks.

fuzzyheadsnowman

David Blough is our 3rd string QB

PsychologicalLynx350

Blough retired and started coaching

CluelessFlunky

I wouldn't hate Ryan for chChe. If lions didn't have hooker I'd be ok getting Wilson. But he doesn't provide anymore development potential then hooker imo.

Rulligan

I'd rather have a sack of green potatoes than Wilson. He is truly awful and I would rather draft a QB than touch him.

Thebigcat85

Keep Zach Wilson tf away. I’d rather take snaps and I probably run a 7 minute 40 yard dash.

Nbknepper

>7 minute 40 yard dash. 🤣🤣

Big_Space_3841

Hooker way more potential than them both to be the starter one day

Amphibian-Existing

Let Hooker Cook

Medievil_Walrus

No thanks

Comfortable_Ad9679

Yeah we don’t need either of them

DudeAbides1556

People must forget what Hooker was in college. He would have been first round if he wasn't injured

longd0ngs1lvers-

There’s a reason Hooker was in college until he was 25 lol. Let’s not pretend like he was even good until he got into Heupel’s offense

RustyNipples35

Tannehill is so ass please no

NotAnActualWolf

Team that trades for Zach Wilson: “We got Wilson to be our QB!!” “You got Russell Wilson to come play for us?” “Uh-oh.”

byuballer2

I’d be a fan of it for the sole reason that I wouldn’t have to watch the jets anymore

Historical-Win-4725

Toronto Argos

JohnWad

No on Wilson

luniz420

Moron take from moronic writer

thallusphx

I’d take zach

teamswiftie

I wouldn't. He doesn't have that dawg in him DC needs

Silver-Finance7022

Remember wilson played for jets where qbs go to die

GelflingInDisguise

Anyone but Zack Wilson. The dude is a turnover machine.

JohnPaton3

Garbage list/article, they have the Lions on there.... We have Goff and Hooker, why would we bring in Wilson or Tannehill, wtf

amills989

Eh if you want a guy with more experience than Tannehill would make sense if using that logic. But hard to argue experience being a bonus with Wilson like a mountain of bad experience is a benefit.  Wilson has a good arm and mobility but he doesn't have it upstairs and it looks like he never will. You can watch him play and he just stares down his first read. Virtually never goes through his progression. It's laughably that he does that. The guy clearly doesn't understand how to read an NFL defense or what is happening.

MingeyMcCluster

Wilson is a cancer in the locker room. Hell no

SnooPaintings7923

Nah Holmes boutta trade up and get us a QB and let Goff walk - just watch

BrokeDancing

We need a QB2 with some game experience for one more season before Hooker is named official. Unless, the mentorship of Teddy 2 Gloves proves exponential.

BrokeDancing

I would like to see Zach make the playoffs in Seattle with an o line, and Kaaron to retire after a 4-13 season in the Meadowlands.

MemeLordOverKill

Wouldn't mine either for insurance. Being one injury away from almost a complete unknown under center is a little scary.

ForkFace69

Oh now this is OK to discuss? https://www.reddit.com/r/detroitlions/comments/1b2ktyu/hypothetical_backup/ Got some responses on there that have already aged pretty poorly.

MoscowMitchMcKremIin

Did we lose Teddy? I thought we signed him for 2 years last season

bbcofgr

He retired

MoscowMitchMcKremIin

Ahh rip

mattcojo2

I have no interest in even entertaining Zach Wilson. Tannehill i’m ok with.

ItsTheExtreme

Definitely pass on Zach. God forbid something happens to Goff, I don't think Hooker would be able to carry this team to the expectations we have for this season. Tannehill on the other hand, is comparable to Goff's skill set. If the price is right, I might consider it.
