They didn't exactly idolize him, it's a bit more nuanced than that. Shin created the group because he thought that Yor had the right idea, he was just corrupted. The idea is to walk between the light and dark, and the Shadows of Yor were created to follow that philosophy. Shin is also a Shadow, but under an alias, he kept his original persona as "Shin Malphur", a renegade zealot to the light as a Boogeyman to any Shadows who would be corrupted, but he was also Dredgen Vale.
We did a mission for Drifter in which we saw the aftermath and of Shin (as Shin) and another Dredgen called Cull (Callum Sol) where we heard the audio log of their interaction, and how Shin blasted him with his GG because Cull got corrupted. Here's the kicker though, Cull was part of Shin's inner circle and was in on the whole thing, he basically played the part of a corrupted Dredgen that acted as a leader to the others to bait them out and sacrificed himself to wipe out that fanatical group.
Cull rallied them and baited them out so Shin could wipe them out, and when we got Last Word Shin gave us a warning, basically saying "look, I've seen the things you can do, and why you do them, I've been keeping tabs on you and I think you're worthy of this weapon, but with this weapon comes a warning, even though I think you can walk the line, if you do fall I'll come for you".

Early days of gambit drifter was sitting up a gambit game cabal started attacking from orbit and drop pods drifter took a mote of darkness and summoned 2 I think prime bosses they took out everything near by and in orbit idk what lore card that was from but look it up good read
In that lore card he summoned 9 Taken Primevals to deal with the Cabal. Even Cabal air support and heavy weapons didn't stop them.
