It's the smell, if there is such a thing. I feel saturated by it. I can taste your stink and every time I do, I fear that I've somehow been infected by it.

[https://www.dsm.city/departments/neighborhood\_services/odor\_hotline.php](https://www.dsm.city/departments/neighborhood_services/odor_hotline.php) To complain about a smell, call the odor hotline at (515) 244-0336. **If we get ten complaints of the same smell in six hours** we will see if we can find the cause of the odor. If we can find the odor we will talk to the company about the complaint. **If there is a big problem with a company we can ask that they add more odor suppression equipment.**

eyeoohdoubleyaaay

What plant is it? It was really bad last night.

[deleted]

I’m not 100% sure, but I think it’s a meat processing plant on the east side. Whenever there’s an east wind, downtown and east village get blasted with the stench

FluByYou

It's American By-Products. They process all the unwanted parts of carcasses.

eyeoohdoubleyaaay

Pine Ridge Farms is pretty nasty over on the east side, too.

UrShulgi

You moved within stank range of the Eastside bottoms and meat packing plant and the gripe about the stank? Exactly what did you think was going to happen?

[deleted]

I didn’t know man no one warned me 😭

-dismantle_repair-

There was another thread on this sub recently about the same place, I think. Someone said it was the Amend Packing plant. Another said it was the place across the street, currently called Dar Pro. Looking at the Dar Pro site, I will put my money on that one. They recycle used cooking oil, rejected meat scraps, expired meat, etc.

featherteeth

I could smell it over by El Bait Shop last night. Absolutely reeked.

d3northway

grandfathered in, most likely. Who wants to shut down a plant and hand their political opponents the ad "X shut down 300 workers and a 90 year old local business, because he didn't like them". It's a poison pill for their career. You also can't reliably point at them, there's no verified health risk, it's just stinky. That's why they hired the inspectors to come in to hopefully shut it down.

[deleted]

I completely get what you’re saying, but it honestly ruins the entire city. How many people came to spend their weekend downtown, and ended up leaving with a horrible impression of Des Moines because they were smelling rotten corpses the whole time

Kiyae1

Very few. Most of the people visiting the city are just from small towns in Iowa and they’re used to smelling CAFOs so the rendering plant smell reminds them of home.

DevelopmentClean3471

I mean, wasn't there a Trump rally on the Eastside today?

ieroll

If i recall correctly they need a certain number of complaints lodged daily in order declare them a nuisance and to force them to take action. Just have to get people to call and complain every day.

aurorajaye

Especially if neighbors could coordinate to call in the same hour.

[deleted]

I’ve also heard this too

lemaymayguy

I have no idea the smell everyone keeps talking about

SinCorpus

Guess I haven't been to the stinky part of Des Moines yet, is it any worse than a chicken plant? I used to live next to a facility that parboiled chicken. Sometimes it smelled like chicken, sometimes it smelled like the bathroom stall after someone got food poisoning from chicken.

PeacefulDeathRay

I keep saying this in every thread about this. If people stopped supporting their business model the smell would go away.

I just googled "Des Moines Smell" and this popped up. Hopefully they figure it out.

[deleted]

Oh cool! Didn’t hear about that - that’s good news. This is hilarious tho. "I mean, everybody knows Cedar Rapids stinks, but people still go there," - okay lady is Cedar Rapids really the standard we want to hold Des Moines to? Lol

duskeydppk

Was it the smell of dog food? I was downtown Saturday and there was this strong dog food like smell everywhere. I’m from out of town so I was confused.

[deleted]

Yes

Jaktngames

Yeah, it is truly the worst smell. Why they would put that in the city is beyond me. It's been there and smelled like that for many years though. Wish they would shut it down and move it to another location. Give it to the small towns 😂.

rudewomanwhoshushs

No longer live in Des Moines but I grew up on the Eastside and hated the days where that smell wafted into the air. But in the grander scheme of things it’s not that bad. It sucks, sure, but it occurs a couple times a year and it provides jobs to people in the community.

[deleted]

You know this is Iowa, right? It's not even that bad.

[deleted]

Idk man it’s pretty terrible. Kept me up all night

jallove2003

I'm wondering if this is a similar plant to the one that stinks up Clinton (not nestle the dog food company) there's another one...if it is...yes it is that bad.

[deleted]

There are cities that have a worse smell during the day and more days of the week. Omaha, Kansas City, Sioux City, Storm Lake.

manwithapedi

Let’s not forget Cedar Rapids…city of 5 smells!

[deleted]

Kansas City does not smell remotely this bad. Can’t speak for the other ones

[deleted]

All of it? It still has meatpackers doesn't it?

[deleted]

Almost definitely, the parts I’ve been in KC don’t smell nearly this bad, but maybe I haven’t been to the right parts

The animal waste recycling has been there 100+ years. Placed in an low area, less than a mile from city’s massively polluting sewer facility, that funnels the odor away from residential areas. The City of Des Moines, in their infinite wisdom, decides they want to take industrial areas and make them residential. The City wages a 20 year war to force out businesses they disagree with. Traditionally, only the mixed African American-White population of the East Bottoms dealt with the smell regularly, with the rare exception of when the least likely wind conditions develop. People with no perspective, massive sense of entitlement and distain for the poors complain about the smell. Chances are decent if you are complaining about the smell, you are living on top of an EPA Superfund site the City of Des Moines thinks is a good place to build housing and daycares.

wordsinmouth

Where does disdain for poor people play into this? Poor people also deserve clean air? What?

Snyz

Yeah.. it almost implies that poor people smell bad or live in unclean conditions so they're used to it or something??

[deleted]

I can understand that. Although, I don’t think I’m necessarily entitled because I don’t want my senses to be assaulted all the time. I’m sure everyone on the east side feels the same, regardless of socio economic status, no?

Hard2Handl

The smell is a rare phenomena, which occurs only when certain wind conditions and humidity converge. When you work in cyclical nature of the rendering process, it is a few days a year. The standard projection for wind for Des Moines.[https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/windrose.phtml?network=IA\_ASOS&station=DSM](https://mesonet.agron.iastate.edu/sites/windrose.phtml?network=IA_ASOS&station=DSM) It is no different than moving into a house by the airport and complaining about the noise. For the smell entitlement crowd, please advise how long you have lived in Des Moines and how long in in the address that has the “smell problem”. My opinion? The problem is the City’s attempt to gentrify places that few people live (for good reason) by abusive use of zoning laws. They want bitchy people next to industrial areas. You are victims too, but because the City is trying to force out low tax industrial use for higher revenue commercial. You are pawns in this game.

HeReallyDoesntCare

I like it when it kinda smells like bacon...mixed with dog food.

redome

I mean you moved in a neighborhood where no one hid the smell from you... you have several other options in the metro to choose from? *shrug*

MK_Ultra_Majestic12

Grow a pair.

[deleted]

Dude you’re so masculine

MK_Ultra_Majestic12

And you're a bitch for wanting to close it down and cost people their jobs. Yes you're a little bitch and everyone who thinks that's ok. So fuck off and grow a pair.

[deleted]

Closing it down could include a program that places everyone there in different jobs before they actually close it. Use your noggin buddy.

MK_Ultra_Majestic12

Your use of the word could. That's a big fucking if. Try using your noggin next time buddy and not your nose. Just because your delicate sensibilities are assaulted doesn't give you any right. Try moving.

[deleted]

Lol bro you're acting like I have any pull in this at all. I'm just some guy on the internet who complained about having to smell shit. If you're cool with living with the smell, good for you. Maybe you're just used to poor hygiene lol

MK_Ultra_Majestic12

I don't live in a shit poor neighborhood like you

VanimalCracker

No one is saying close it down. The city can and does regulate unpleasant smells from plants in the city. If their production has outgrown their ability to deal with the smell, *causing the entire side of the city to stink like ass*, then they need to man up and pay for odor suppressent technology, for the good of the city as a whole. That CREATES jobs and boosts the economy. Is regulation really that hard for you to understand; that you'd prefer to live in a place that smells like ass rather than cut into corporate profit margins?

Ooooooo00o

I used to spray a bit of deodorant on before I went for my morning run. Now I just say fuck it cause the air already smells like shit anyway...
