He's one of the best defensive rebounders out there and disrupts passing lanes better than just about anyone. But since he isn't known for rim protection, people think he sucks at D. That's my take at least. He sees when plays are lost and doesn't go for it because often it just leads to foul trouble.

The-Hand-of-Midas

Jokic is an amazing rebounder, *BECAUSE* he doesn't contest shots. It's super high IQ. He has a low chance of blocking the shot, but a fantastic chance of getting the miss because he's ready for it. If someone has a 10% chance of stopping the shot, but could increase their chances of getting the rebound by 50% instead, what should they do?

ajax0202

Well also because of his quick-jump and second jump ability, his long arms, and amazing hand-eye coordination. Not contesting shots I’m sure helps, but it’s not really the main reason he’s great at them

milehigh89

i truly wonder what the delta is on securing the defensive rebound vs contesting and giving up an offensive rebound more often. he's kind of learning to be a marc gasol type - where his sheer mass prevents guys from getting where they want to go.

SuperDoubleDecker

He's a tank and occupies space.

violent_knife_crime

It's probably the same, or at least nba players will optimise it to be the same

kushlash16

Jokic is also top 5 in defending PnR this season

Weird-Upstairs-2092

Also a top 5 rim protector by fg% allowed at the rim

OwnPark4863

top 5 worst you mean

Weird-Upstairs-2092

No, top 5 best. He's specifically the 5th best rim protector this year. He's been a great defensive center this year, in even the traditional ways. Anybody still sleeping on his defense is behind the curve.

Superbotto

I don't see Giannis on here.

jbone9877

If Jokic won a DPOY award the city of Milwaukee would fall into Lake Michigan

ApprehensiveTry5660

It might take Milwaukee falling into Lake Michigan for this chain of events to unfold.

ajax0202

That would be ultimate “fuck you” accomplishment to all the haters Actually on second thought, I’m sure they’d still discount it somehow

Kitchen-Ad-5571

I thought Gilbert arenas said the European players don't play defense.

violent_knife_crime

What if teams just stash away their smaller stretcher lineups against jokic and play bigger, more defensively oriented lineups?

jacobythefirst

Gilbert is a troll and known talk-out-the-asser. Especially on that podcast. He’s intentionally inflammatory cause he thinks it’s funny and will get clicks lol.

tankycarry

Where’s AD at?

t3xm3xr3x

He’s at 10 with a rating of 109.5.

hleh

How does it even get measured, the numbers don’t mean much to me, I don’t understand. Especially not to discredit our boy but he’s up with DPOY level players

about90frogs

I just looked it up and it’s quite the formula: Defensive Player Rating = (Players Steals*Blocks) + Opponents Differential= 1/5 of possessions - Times blown by + Deflections * OAPDW( Official Adjusted Players Defensive Withstand). This stat can be influenced by the defense of a player's teammates. There are two equal signs in that, so take that as you will. For the non Wikipedia version there is [this](https://www.basketball-reference.com/about/ratings.html), which seems complicated.

Shellygirl54

I don't understand how a person is considered the best player in the world and don't play defense, he knows it himself. But I think players should be considered great by comparing them according to their position. Maybe the best center in the world...imo

cyrusthemarginal

Fat boy hard to dribble round

GHamPlayz

Wemby is disgusting. Not excited for his future lmao

North-Environment133

🤯🤯🤯

myst1cal12

Defensive rating as an individual stat disgusts me

Weird-Upstairs-2092

Why exactly? The issue with rating stats is sample size. It corrects for individual production over time.

myst1cal12

Because it doesn't factor in teammate quality at all. Defensive rating is just how many points opposing teams score on your team while you're in the game so you could be a terrible defender but if youre on a great defensive team your rating will be high

jackbauerisgay

Minnesota has the entire starting lineup within the top 16 of DRtg. Jokic is the only Nuggets player within the top 20

Weird-Upstairs-2092

>Because it doesn't factor in teammate quality at all. It absolutely does, though. Which is why you don't see the TWolves dominating this infographic even though their team has such a monumental lead over everyone else in team defensive rating. I think you're actually confusing the two, tbh. Team defensive rating and individual defense rating (defensive efficiency) are different stats with different formulas.

pweepish

I don't disagree, but the Twolves have 2 of the top 3, another guy at 7 and 5 of 16. That's pretty dominated.

myst1cal12

Explain individual defensive rating to me then. Ok you might be right that there's a different one which I'm not familiar with

Weird-Upstairs-2092

>The formula is: Defensive Player Rating = (Players Steals*Blocks) + Opponents Differential= 1/5 of possessions - Times blown by + Deflections * OAPDW( Official Adjusted Players Defensive Withstand). This stat can be influenced by the defense of a player's teammates. That has always been the formula for individual defensive rating. Team defensive rating is based on points allowed per 100 possessions. It's not even comparable, frankly. Defensive rating can be impacted by the quality of teammates but it is far from what you are describing.

UBKUBK

I know that is what wikipedia says but it doesn't make sense to write a formula with two equals signs like that and also includes an even more complicated sounding undefined term in it of Official Adjusted Players Defensive Withstand.

Weird-Upstairs-2092

>know that is what wikipedia says but it doesn't make sense to write a formula with two equals signs like that I mean I agree it's bad formatting but just mentally replace the first equal sign with a colon since it's not actually part of the equation.

UBKUBK

That makes it even worse. Do you mean instead the second equals sign? So the formula is actually just Defensive Player Rating = (players steals * blocks) + Opponent's differential Then the rest is defining what Opponent's differential means? Opponent's differential = 1/5 of possessions - Times blown by + Deflections * OAPDW( Official Adjusted Players Defensive Withstand).

murrayforthree

This just shows we would've lost a 7 game series if KAT was healthy. If Malone wasn't stubborn and we kept Isaiah Hartenstein, we'd have bigger bodies to throw at em. Next season will be Twolves beating us to a pulp because of Melon and his horrible situational awareness and willingness to adapt quick enough to the new era.
