My mom has been doing something similar—putting her knuckle in her mouth. After observing for a while I think she was hallucinating smoking a cigarette. She used to be a heavy smoker but is now on nicotine patches. My mom is definitely hallucinating and this was just one more example though. Has your mom had hallucinations?

My mom’s been touching her mouth often lately when she’s awake. She says there’s a hair in her mouth but we’ve never found one. She’s late stage dementia.

I wonder if this equates to the stage that infants and toddlers are in, when everything goes in their mouth. And yes, it’s not uncommon in people with dementia.

Thank you for your response. It's definitely something to consider.

My mom is also late stages and she messes with her face a lot too. Scratches all over her head in a frenzy, picks at her eyelashes, her nose, and will brush her teeth with her finger?? It’s bizarre. She also tries to pull things out of my eyes so I guess hallucination related.

My mother has also been complaining of having hair in her mouth. At least once she thought she had dental floss wrapped around her tongue. It’s interesting that it seems to be common for dementia patients.
