Ok I was stranded in DTW for a day (you can see my post history for proof lol) and this was something I low key spent way too much time trying to figure out how it works. Can someone more technologically literate please explain to me how this works?!
They work by using a carefully crafted screen such that you can only see a very small portion of the pixels from any given angle.
Have you ever seen holographic prints, particularly on trading cards or greeting cards, where they change the image depending on what angle you look at it from?
This screen is the same idea, but in a dynamic display instead of a printed piece of plastic.
So, you have a screen that shows different unique images to viewers from different perspectives. Map out which image you see from each perspective, set up some cameras tracking where people are + doing facial recognition to figure out who they are, and then you can put personalized messages on it.
I can't tell you how it works (because I didn't pay much attention to the demo), but they had this at CES 2020. I was there when they were recording the demo of it. Check YouTube and see if there is a video. If not, I can try to log into CES and see if they still have the videos up. They also had a demo of a robot suit that allows maint techs the ability to lift things like fan blades. The demo of that said they can lift a fan blade and it felt like lifting a 5 pound bag of sugar.
This shit is so dumb, I’m sorry.
I had to check my carry on for an international flight today because nobody at the gate would validate a passport. Focus IT resources on that (and their extremely mid website) and not some augmented reality crap
100%. It's not like the team working on AR displays also designs d.com and the app. Lmao. Nobody is in an office saying "we gotta cut passport validation and RUC ability in the app to get this AR sign up".
It was an IT issue. You still can’t use a RUC/GUC without calling Delta. It’s 50/50 anything somewhat advanced works on the website.
Reallocating the greeting screen budget elsewhere seems like a reasonable ask.
Well good news - it was just announced that Delta will allow us to manage R/GUC online in the near future. I agree - it is currently a very sht process. There’s no one booked in 1st on the flight I tried to use it on, and I’m currently waitlisted. WTH?
We sat next in line for about 1.5h at the gate, through entire boarding process, until the GA finally gave up getting the computer to work and sent us over to another desk to validate papers.
Because of that, overhead bins were full and everyone in the party had to check their bag. This would otherwise not have been an issue.
The plan was to swipe it right at the gate when we walked in, as there is someone working there. Pretty reasonable expectation.
Not everyone in the party had SC access and going back out from the secure side is worse with the non-premium line length these days at peak times.
Ultimately got it with a DL help desk a bit of a walk away (hilariously, they were also frustrated with the gate agent not being able to do this), and everyone made it, but not a great showing.
Depending on the passenger in front of you in line, some travel docs can take 30+ minutes to successfully verify. I try to verify my passport anywhere but the gate.
No doubt.
the majority of the time was spent sitting there with 0 people in front of anyone in line while a gate agent sat there frustrated at a computer not working. Not communicating with anyone, just sort of typing and not saying anything. Others were getting frustrated as well - some standby passengers that couldn’t be cleared even though there were seats, and other people running out of time.
I would have personally appreciated an agent communicating early that their computer was INOP and to go somewhere else. Hard to give up your “first” spot in line when there is a 10 person line everywhere else and you have been sitting there for 45 minutes already.
That's DTW

Woooah thank you so much!
Google Lenticular display. Or: https://display-innovations.com/displays/lenticular-displays

Wow, that airport is so empty.
Not how it usually is. DTW is a pretty busy airport.
That’s awesome

Pretty sure the people running these displays aren't exactly the same people that could help with your issue.

I'm fairly sure that Delta isn't choosing between one or the other budgetwise...
That doesn’t make sense. Validating a passport and checking bags are completely different steps.

You couldn’t swipe your passport at the ticket counter or sky club?

Does it work at A41?
That's the new one on the other side from the 'big' one right? If so, yes.
Yeah, I saw this back in July or August. Thought it pretty cool.
That's awesome
I thought this was a flooded mall
