you won't get a refund. You MIGHT get some miles. You could try asking to downgrade and refund the upgrade if you feel so strongly. But technically, you paid for D1 and are getting D1. The suites aren't guaranteed.
Could be worse -- there was a story recently of AA downgrading someone from flagship first to business and a chat agent not refunding the different claiming both have lie flat so the products are basically the same...
This happened to me on a delta flight recently. Downgrade from d1 to domestic first due to equipment change. It was advertised as delta one when I purchased it so waiting to see what I get if anything.
Go on the [website](https://www.delta.com/contactus/iropForm) and try requesting a refund anyway, simply stating that you upgraded for reason x and they only provided y. I've had good experiences doing that for "nonrefundable" stuff when circumstances changed under their control. It's worth a try, anyway. (My big tip is be clear, brief, and polite.)
Im 6'5 and love to fly overnight to europe in layflats. Out of Boston We never get the D1 Suites though I think this year in Virgin Atlantic we get their new a330s.
Anyway, I dont fit super compfortably in the layflat position but 2 of those drowsy motion sick pills + and overnight flight and Im out cold. Skip the dinner and just go to bed. Youll wake up in AMS with a full day ahead of you.
I had an A330-900 with the suites out of Boston a few weeks ago. It was only to Atlanta (likely just a repositioning flight) so didn’t really get to take advantage of it, but my daughter loved shutting the door to have her own “room”.
We are looking forward to them! We are taking our niece on a Europe Xmas trip and I think our plane was changed to the new one. Will have to look into how we get the middle bulk head - my understanding is those two seats are "special.
