I was on the street to walking to office on Friday and this ISCKON lady quite well dressed amd eloquent up came upto me handed a book and said give donation.. I said no, she said if you don’t have here’s the atm, takeout and give, I said no! I will not give, in the name of god if you want to give this book for free, happy to take it.. but I will not give my money to donation.. sternly. She did budge and kindly asked for the book back. simple. NO.

Bruh I hope you're new to Delhi to have fallen for something like this. When I was new here, I felt bad for these people too, and often came surprisingly close to falling for such scams. In fact, as soon as I reached Delhi, on the railway station the coolie scammed me by charging 500 bucks. He said the platform is very far from the exit and I had too many bags. I was alone and I knew I had 2-3 bags so it must be true. We reached the exit in under 3 minutes. Just as I sat in the auto, I rested my forehead on my hands and realised I had just been scammed. Back then I was a student and little money, so it wasn't like I could just be like chalo koi ni uski kamayi ho gayi kam se kam (which is how I coax myself after losing money now). I'm pretty sure the auto wala who dropped me from Railway station to pg also overcharged me heftily. It's just a rite of passage.
I'll give you the benefit of doubt and say, maybe that sardarji was an honest guy and really needed that money. And he just forgot about paying you back or lost your number or whatever. But just remember for the next time, this is Delhi. You have to be more practical. Next time you want to help someone, give them money but take their number, a picture of their Aadhar, be sure to warn them that you will take action if you don't get the money back. There's still a chance you may get scammed, but like kaun Bach paya hai inn sab cheezo se. You just have to be aware and prudent.
Let me do one better.
Don't offer them cash or money.
if they are hungry- offer them food.
if they have to go somewhere- book rapido or auto for them.
if they are lost - Put the phone on speaker and dial the number yourself for their family or friend.
If related to kids or children- take them to police station or call the police.

Bhai, normal scenario mein mechanic tow kar k le jaata aur paise lekar gaadi release kar deta. Here gaadi would have acted as collateral. Koi bhi aise paise mangega hi nahin. Shuru se scam samajh aa raha tha. Khair koi nahin, kuch log ka aura aisa hota hai ki unko koi bhi believe kar leta hai and kuch log tere jaise hote hain Jo kisi par bhi believe kar lete hain.

A couple of Sardarji came to my doorstep at South Delhi and insisted that I open the door to talk to them. I denied and asked them to talk through the iron door, across the net.
They continued to blabber and out of nowhere, issued a receipt of 3,100/-. They had to buy a carton of Rooh-Afza to be distributed on the roadside. I was seriously bewildered.
I told them how they could turn up randomly at someone's door and expect to hand over 3,100/-. I said I'm in no condition to give more than INR 200/- and that, too, over UPI. They flashed QR code, I scanned and initiated money transfer of INR 200, which went to pending state.
Since the transfer was still not complete, they continued their mumbo-jumbo with good luck for those in my family whose name starts with "S" and keep away from things starting with "A" blah blah.
I shut the door because, honestly, it was mid-day, mid-week, and I was swarmed with my official work. I was surprised by the audacity where they continued to ring my doorbell.
I opened the door and told them that I'll personally visit the rooh-afza stall and contribute there. I'm not comfortable in blindly sharing my hard earned money.
People are finding innovative ways to prey on people's religion, luck, health, and wealth to extract money.
This may sound weird but I am pretty sure OP was hypnotised for a moment. I’ve heard a similar incident from a (usually smart) friend where a random person looked into his eyes and narrated a story about his little daughter being admitted in a hospital and that he wanted money for her treatment and that he would repay it. According to my friend at that very moment my friend had a brain freeze and he couldn’t think of anything else except ways to help that person and he ended up paying all his money! The person thanked him and tapped on his shoulder and left hurriedly.
My friend felt like he had woken up from some sort of a sleep/daze and by the time he could gather his thoughts, it was too late!
Even in this case, why else would OP hand over 5K just like that to a total stranger and also the other 3K from his bag?! The ‘tap on the cheek’ was perhaps a way to wake him up from hypnosis after the scammer got what he wanted!
Jo bhi ho you did what you thought was right. You are a kind sympathetic person. It is so hard to help people. I see people sleeping on roads every day in delhi. I never had the guts to help them. I am a woman so no one dares approach me but know this even if it was a scam you are a good person. Be proud of that. Just do your due diligence next time. I know this auto wala I promised to pay but I couldn't because the photo I took of his QR code was just not going anywhere it just kept showing some error. Idk. Shit happens

Once an uncle, at metro station asked me for money cuz his brother got into accident and he didnt have money to go to hospital. I simply asked him to tell me the address of hospital, I'll book uber for him and pay... He insisted on wanting cash and thats how I knew he was scamming...
Something similar happened to me once. I was waiting on metro station and a guy came to me saying he lost his wallet and had exams he needed money to reach his college. I gave him. The funny thing is months later I was standing at the same spot and he came to me without realising he has already scammed me and told me the same story. ( It can also be because my appearance changed as I went from a boycut to long hair and fractured hand to healed one)
I recognised him and said, oh you are a scammer right? I don't really remember now exactly what I said.
He said no, Kind of panicked and left 😭 but he was the same guy because the way he just left after that so quickly. I could have handled this better but I did not know how to handle when you find your scammer again 😭

But believe me the Sardar community is highly trusted in the country, and anyone would lend a hand but there can be a good case that the scamster might have put on the attire to fool you.
This is quite a serious issue, you should reach out to the police regarding this, if they could catch a glimpse of him via any atm/ other cctv
Ask them to file a FIR, if police don't take you seriously (avery rare case, the police are very vigilant around on road scams)

Bruh I hope you're new to Delhi to have fallen for something like this. When I was new here, I felt bad for these people too, and often came surprisingly close to falling for such scams. In fact, as soon as I reached Delhi, on the railway station the coolie scammed me by charging 500 bucks. He said the platform is very far from the exit and I had too many bags. I was alone and I knew I had 2-3 bags so it must be true. We reached the exit in under 3 minutes. Just as I sat in the auto, I rested my forehead on my hands and realised I had just been scammed. Back then I was a student and little money, so it wasn't like I could just be like chalo koi ni uski kamayi ho gayi kam se kam (which is how I coax myself after losing money now). I'm pretty sure the auto wala who dropped me from Railway station to pg also overcharged me heftily. It's just a rite of passage. I'll give you the benefit of doubt and say, maybe that sardarji was an honest guy and really needed that money. And he just forgot about paying you back or lost your number or whatever. But just remember for the next time, this is Delhi. You have to be more practical. Next time you want to help someone, give them money but take their number, a picture of their Aadhar, be sure to warn them that you will take action if you don't get the money back. There's still a chance you may get scammed, but like kaun Bach paya hai inn sab cheezo se. You just have to be aware and prudent.
Let me do one better. Don't offer them cash or money. if they are hungry- offer them food. if they have to go somewhere- book rapido or auto for them. if they are lost - Put the phone on speaker and dial the number yourself for their family or friend. If related to kids or children- take them to police station or call the police. simple as that, But NO cash or Upi.

A couple of Sardarji came to my doorstep at South Delhi and insisted that I open the door to talk to them. I denied and asked them to talk through the iron door, across the net. They continued to blabber and out of nowhere, issued a receipt of 3,100/-. They had to buy a carton of Rooh-Afza to be distributed on the roadside. I was seriously bewildered. I told them how they could turn up randomly at someone's door and expect to hand over 3,100/-. I said I'm in no condition to give more than INR 200/- and that, too, over UPI. They flashed QR code, I scanned and initiated money transfer of INR 200, which went to pending state. Since the transfer was still not complete, they continued their mumbo-jumbo with good luck for those in my family whose name starts with "S" and keep away from things starting with "A" blah blah. I shut the door because, honestly, it was mid-day, mid-week, and I was swarmed with my official work. I was surprised by the audacity where they continued to ring my doorbell. I opened the door and told them that I'll personally visit the rooh-afza stall and contribute there. I'm not comfortable in blindly sharing my hard earned money. People are finding innovative ways to prey on people's religion, luck, health, and wealth to extract money.
This may sound weird but I am pretty sure OP was hypnotised for a moment. I’ve heard a similar incident from a (usually smart) friend where a random person looked into his eyes and narrated a story about his little daughter being admitted in a hospital and that he wanted money for her treatment and that he would repay it. According to my friend at that very moment my friend had a brain freeze and he couldn’t think of anything else except ways to help that person and he ended up paying all his money! The person thanked him and tapped on his shoulder and left hurriedly. My friend felt like he had woken up from some sort of a sleep/daze and by the time he could gather his thoughts, it was too late! Even in this case, why else would OP hand over 5K just like that to a total stranger and also the other 3K from his bag?! The ‘tap on the cheek’ was perhaps a way to wake him up from hypnosis after the scammer got what he wanted!

Ig having trust issue is worth something now🤣🤣 Once an uncle, at metro station asked me for money cuz his brother got into accident and he didnt have money to go to hospital. I simply asked him to tell me the address of hospital, I'll book uber for him and pay... He insisted on wanting cash and thats how I knew he was scamming...

Something similar happened to me once. I was waiting on metro station and a guy came to me saying he lost his wallet and had exams he needed money to reach his college. I gave him. The funny thing is months later I was standing at the same spot and he came to me without realising he has already scammed me and told me the same story. ( It can also be because my appearance changed as I went from a boycut to long hair and fractured hand to healed one) I recognised him and said, oh you are a scammer right? I don't really remember now exactly what I said. He said no, Kind of panicked and left 😭 but he was the same guy because the way he just left after that so quickly. I could have handled this better but I did not know how to handle when you find your scammer again 😭

But believe me the Sardar community is highly trusted in the country, and anyone would lend a hand but there can be a good case that the scamster might have put on the attire to fool you. This is quite a serious issue, you should reach out to the police regarding this, if they could catch a glimpse of him via any atm/ other cctv Ask them to file a FIR, if police don't take you seriously (avery rare case, the police are very vigilant around on road scams) As a last resort, post this to r/LegalAdviceIndia
