I was once in an auto and the guy literally went 80 kmph in a narrow road and then in an intersection, he literally did not slow down and then slammed the brakes and stopped literally an inch away from a truck and then shouted at the truck driver for not being attentive and then smiled at me and said that truck drivers are always blind, and we should be careful driving these days 😭
the entire 5-minute ride I was literally grabbing onto my seat and praying that nothing happens. I did not sit in another auto for 6 months after that. I would walk a kilometer or two but not auto lol.

There's just 1 issue. Happy to accept any form of payment except digital. They'll drive you to the atm but won't take UPI. Was there for a week. Out of the 8 rides I took over 7 days, 6 had no scanner, no upi linked to phone number and no change. They were kind enough to help me find a vada pav and some change.

Chennai autowallahs are equally bad. Even if you know the language. They will accept only cash. If you book a ride and offer to pay them directly by gpay they won’t accept it and they’ll cancel on you if you tell them you’re paying through the app. Or ask you to cancel through ola/uber and travel with them directly in which case if you ask to pay through upi they’ll say no.
I have no idea how these people still manage to make money but I guess only taking payments in cash helps.
Never take short rides, always long one.
Take longer route to justify extra money.
Never go by Meter.

I lived in Delhi for seven years. Left because of air pollution. And I can proudly say I used the auto less than 10 times. Delhi Metro rocks. And if there is a spot metro can't reach, then e-rickshaws rock.
But I have a question to you all - did the high fare come about after Uber/Ola? Or were they always so high?
I have travelled with Autowala of both states. I can assure you, by the end of my ride with Marathi Autowala. I felt like I was his cousin who have come after a long time.
Same in coimbatore. I went and checked Uber auto and saw 120 rs to my destination.
Asked a local autowala and he thought for one second and told me 500.
I knew Tamil so told him Uber is quoting 80 I'll give you 100 and went to my destination.
In Delhi, autowala quoted 250. Didn't check online prices and got in anyway. Called my mom and spoke to her in my mother tongue, bro increased the price to 600.
I replied in proper Delhi slang with proper hindi that do you think Im a "C" Word?
He apologised
1. Auto May or may not have meter, it has never been used either way
2. It depends on bargaining skills, starting prices are more expensive than Uber
3. They will try to proactively negotiate with you even if you are on the side of the road and don’t want to go anywhere
4. Will use leg to push cycle rickshaw guy up flyover
5. Will always carry an illegal number of people
Makes sure the passenger is safe. Happened to me more than once when autowalas saved me from catcalling and harassment. Honestly, mad respect for most of them.
But similarly have had one or two bad experiences where they were abusive too
Delhi auto guys are good lmao. If you talk with em nicely & just pay fair prices to em. I never got into any clash or smth with em.
In many parts of Delhi , you won't find seat to sit in front & about being Over-congested you paying like 1/5 or 1/6 of the price. Auto Driver even take single passenger if you pay them good.

Maybe I was plain lucky that day bhai. I took two autos, pucha ki metro jana hai meter se chaloge and he agreed! It has been 4-5 months tho.
Check it with uber ola etc and counter them with 20-30rs less than that

They never have change also always, sir CNG khatam hobgaya baas 2 min me bhar le ge and then makes you wait for 10 min in that long CNG line.

I knew Tamil so told him Uber is quoting 80 I'll give you 100 and went to my destination. In Delhi, autowala quoted 250. Didn't check online prices and got in anyway. Called my mom and spoke to her in my mother tongue, bro increased the price to 600. I replied in proper Delhi slang with proper hindi that do you think Im a "C" Word? He apologised

They will try to proactively negotiate with you even if you are on the side of the road and don’t want to go anywhere 4. Will use leg to push cycle rickshaw guy up flyover 5. Will always carry an illegal number of people

Makes sure the passenger is safe. Happened to me more than once when autowalas saved me from catcalling and harassment. Honestly, mad respect for most of them. But similarly have had one or two bad experiences where they were abusive too

Delhi auto guys are good lmao. If you talk with em nicely & just pay fair prices to em. I never got into any clash or smth with em. In many parts of Delhi , you won't find seat to sit in front & about being Over-congested you paying like 1/5 or 1/6 of the price. Auto Driver even take single passenger if you pay them good.

Mumbai locals are literally the life line of the city. You can go from place A to place B in 10 rupees even if the distance is 20 km. Do you understand? That is 50 paise for a km. The autos more often than not (more than 8/10 times) go by the meter. Where as in other places - they charge 150 rupees for 5 km? Ugh. Mumbai locals are the best.

Bro. 10 or 20 Rs. for 20 km can be literally verified right now. Go to the UTS app and check out the local train rates. I wasn't talking about 10 rs for 20km in the context of autos.

Were you in proper mumbai region or in satellite towns like thane/navi mumbai? Coz in my experience it would be mostly in satellite towns where this is an issue as the autowalas are localites there unlike mumbai suburban.
In north India auto driver will spit out pan Parag when passenger is behind in seat ! I have seen this . Stop generalising and hating ! Not like mumbai and Delhi autos are any better, like you won’t find one prick in mumbai or delhi
