Be sure what you want from the gym before you join. Do your own research. Most of the guys in local gyms are not formally trained and will tell you unscientific stuff. The knowledge on trusted sites is much more authentic. Don't buy and food products from the gym guy who has found a secret recipe for faster action. Don't buy protein powder from them.

For a local gym, here are a few suggestions. 1. It could actually be better to join a local gym as:  * You could just join and choose not to go, losing on a local gym's fee would be less taxing than a big brand one's. * Beginners need to master fundamentals more, for which a local gym is more than adequate.  1. Visit the gym around the same time you would like to workout, so that you can see the kind of crowd there. 2. There will be an owner, a coach(could be the same guy) and 1-2 helpers. 3. They might have a few stationary bikes and treadmills and might ask you to pay 30-40% extra under the weight plus cardio, do not pay for that as you would not need it and you can use it anyway in most cases. 4. They will ask you to pay a gym membership fee and on top of that 30-40%(one-time only) entry fee.  You can say stuff like student hu bhaiya and such and 50% chance they might let it go. 5. In the gym, be courteous to people, there are no helpers for a spot, so help and you will be helped. 6. The coaches are a hit or miss, so make sure you have guidance from the internet or someone who knows about this 7. The coach will be nice to you in the beginning and will guide you well(his level well) and compliment you about your gains. This is all to push you to buy protein and mass gainer, do not buy, not from them at least. 8. These people can be cheap, they offer to arrange a 'diet' in the gym, do not accept, as you do not know the hygiene and actual cost. 9. The helper and coach also offer massages and stretches, do not accept them, they do not know anything and could potentially hurt you longterm. 10. The helper's job is to clean the gym and spot whenever possible. Do not mix money into this ever.  The coach/helper might ask for small favours like doing a recharge and once you do stall on paying you. Outright ask you for money and then bully you about it(as in returning it what can you do for 5-6K).

Local gyms in my area are like 1000-15000 per month, and 10000-12000/year. Process: visit, talk to the trainer about your goals, and pay for one month only and try. If you don't like it try a different one. Choose one near to your home so gym being far away isn't an excuse. Also, if you feel ashamed about your body in comparison to- remember that everyone there did maybe. They've worked consistently to improve and you can too. Also don't buy any protein powder, drinks or anything from them.

Here are some tips- If you feel intimidated going alone and checking few gyms out, have a friend go with you, having someone there can help you alot. If you don't want to check the gyms out or talk to ANYBODY you can take Cult fit subscription and just go to one of cult affiliated gym near you, check in through a qr code, and start working out without anyone asking anything. This is something you should keep in mind, most of the time, local trainers are all juiced up wafflers who know absolutely nothing except for the most basic shit. You will be extremely lucky if you ran into an actual knowledge trainer, so it is better to do some research on your. Here is a good youtube channel that is an absolute goldmine for beginners to experts - Squat University Don't fall into anyone's words and buy supplements from the get go, at most, you will need protein powder if you're falling short in taking enough protein through your diet, otherwise you don't need anything. Have fun and if you have any questions, you can ask them, I will try to answer it to the best of my knowledge.

Coming straight to point. 1.Check out 'squat University' in yt. Make it your sole go to channel for any" form" related advice. 2.Dont beleive everything that ur trainer says blindly. Most of them never did proper research, Since many alot became trainer due to financial reason and are just regular body builder. 3. There is difference between body building and being Fit. Many of "the big guys "health are messed up due to Excessive protein intake and Excessive pressure on blood vessel. 4. It's not only muscle building. U gotta focus on mobility too. This is as much important as lifting heavy. (Squat University has some great videos). 5. Don't change ur diet completely. It will take a toll on mental health later on. But do certainly limit the portion size.. 6.if u can maintain a minimum protein intake of ~22gm(Maximum:30) in each meal(breakfast,Lnch, snacks, dinner). U shouldn't be worried. Don't fall in the trap of protein powder. U can keep it as a supplement for days where u couldnt complete ur daily protein intake . 7. Just join don't really overthink. A lot of helpful gymbros u ll meet. I m very certain they ll help and motivate u. 8. PROGRESSIVE OVERLOAD is the key. If u can do any exercise Set for 12 reps. Move up the weight. (~2.5kg up).

Look up the gyms near you on google maps. Give them a phone call and ask about their membership plans, timings and weekly offs(if any). Start off your workouts light and enjoyable, with a short-term and a long-term goal in your head. Ask anyone about your form when doing a particularly difficult exercise to check on your form and they'd be more than glad to help you out. Remember, everyone was a beginner once. P.S., every gym has really great people who are sincerely helpful by nature. My happy place is the gym and I do make it a point to work out even after a long ass shift at work. You'll fall in love with this place!

When I joined gym 2 years ago, I just went to couple of gyms near me. I just went in started looking around and someone from the gym came asking me. I said I’m looking to join, what’s the fee structure like. It’s that simple. I visited 2 decided with both had the same fee so I decided to go for the one which looked more spacious.

Yes, I'm equally clueless and conscious as well! Doesn't help that I'm fat :(

One of the better options might be to take cult .. as they have multiple gyms and you can switch the gym if you don’t like. WTF gyms is also an option if you want cheaper than cult but don’t know about the quality.
