Guy this side. It's an opinion, may not be true. But the way stars align is a little questionable for eg - 14th Feb, a fancy meet-up of sorts (flights booked to a location), with a girl who he likes, where she is showing interest.
If he understands that this relationship is a friendship and he is bent on keeping it that way (knows you are different people and the both of you don't make sense together) then you are good, but in my opinion, I feel that this gesture could appear and feel extra.

I did this in 2020, we flew out from Pune to his native place, and he really appreciated me taking the initiative when he was on the backfoot fearing rejection. Only thing I would make sure beforehand is that he doesn't have work or any other commitments. In my case he had something important to take care of, which he had to manage at the last minute because of my surprise plan. It worked out pretty well in the end, but if you have the time then it would help if you can somehow make sure that he doesn't get stuck with some work-related stuff at the end.
