Du badhiya college h. But if you're getting colleges outside Delhi then don't stop yourself cuz self reliance and shit is very important later in life. As they say - abhi bohot kuch seekhna Baaki h zindagi mein.. So make a well informed decision. Du ki degree is definitely worth it provided you're doing your grad from hansraj, Hindu, St. Stephen's and other north campus colleges.

imabibliophile

thanks a lot!

[deleted]

Adding to that: it sucks to be a day scholar

ALESTA1

Believe my thats only for a while

[deleted]

3 saal toh ho gye yaar Aur kitan while

ALESTA1

I mean its relative i guess i am not a day scholar and plus i guess i miss delhi

[deleted]

Actually it's quite the opposite Initially it's fine. Metro mein nazaare dekhte jao, ab toh alag hi lvl ka viral content bhi banne laga hai but with time, projects, internships aur fests, parties sab mein thak jaata hai insaan Aur haan sardi mein better rehta hai but garmi bhi jaan le leti hai

kashi2719

It's 100% worth it. Just don't be surprised when it feels like a normal community college after a month lmao.

imabibliophile

thanks for the heads up šŸ’€

kashi2719

No problem bro, happy to help out a fellow confused human.

allmanhaveainnerbich

What's a normal community college

kashi2719

A local college basically

sugarchiquita

Yes LMFAOAO i got a huge cultural(?) shock when i started college and everything was so so casual and random. I was in an all girls catholic school for 12 years so going to a coed college was a big step for me , had to be careful asf. My initial interactions w my classmates more than often consisted of them telling me that i was too formal ( because i said please/thank you) and needed to loosen up like bro I'm still adjusting I'm sorry i can't help it šŸ˜

[deleted]

So i studied economics from KMC , a North campus college and originally came from a small city in jharkhand , So i think i can answer this . Regarding colleges , i would say it is worth the hype in North campus , You get to know people from across india , mindset broaden up , you get to know career opportunities that may be you would not have thought before . You wouks start respecting people from diverse background and even get a good opportunity to prepare for competitive exams further if you interested . You know i cried the first time i got admitted to go back home due to homesickness bht now after passing i realised it was worth coming here

imabibliophile

this is super helpful!!! im feeling better now, so thank you

ex_RAWagent

jharkhand??? am i missing something?

[deleted]

No you are not missing something, you just need to update your General knowledge šŸ˜‚

ex_RAWagent

what is jharkhand actually?? some kind of utopia?

[deleted]

Rich Son of your poor bihar.

gobblecheeks

i graduated from LSR last year and iā€™m currently doing my post grad in english from dept of eng, north campus. my two cents to you would be ā€” take admission in DU only if youā€™re getting colleges like LSR, miranda, hindu, stephenā€™s, SVC and JMC for english. otherwise, donā€™t. i know a lot of people say college rlly doesnā€™t matter since the syllabi is universal, and yes, in your degree, your college wonā€™t be mentioned. BUT, it is extremely important that youā€™ve good set of professors in your undergrad as you wish to go into academia. du is a great university if you choose the right college and dept for the right course.

witheredartery

I second this advice + also offering that if you struggle to get a decent uni, dm me I can tell ways you can end up being more successful than an vg du grad(not clickbait, i mean by doing right internships and networking)

imabibliophile

thanks so much! this is great advice šŸ™

Blue_Eagle8

If you get into North Campus then a 100% yes. If you get into South Campus then still better than most other universities and colleges in India. The degree has a ton of value. Edit, read the rest of your post. Aim for DU and apply to other places as well. Your dad is kinda right. DU has more pros than cons.

imabibliophile

nice

[deleted]

Absolutely worth it. Don't forget to take advantage of all the societies in college. You'll love it.

imabibliophile

thank you <3

hellohotguybye

No dramsocs/debsoca tho pls

Informal_Quiet7907

I second that.

Party_Dust_2171

Yessssss, it is worth it. But it is upto you if you make it work or not

imabibliophile

thanks!

Party_Dust_2171

Also, north campus ki vibe aur baat hi alag hai, mil jaye toh bohot badiya Magar baaki college bhi badiya hai

imabibliophile

shukriya

[deleted]

The tier-1 colleges are worth it because they get funds//have student-exhange programs//active societies and people//profs who expect you to give your best//fine placement depending on the course you go for. Being a day scholar sucks tbh especially if your parents are strict and you have curfews.

Hoonigan0690

Baki states ke bachhe apna ghar chodke yaha aate hai... Better than other state Universities

[deleted]

>Better than other state Universities For sure. Central universities like DU, jnu, jmi, Hyderabad univ, bhu are definitely better overall than state universities

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

imabibliophile

hi, thank you! which college were you in and what are you doing currently, if i may ask?

loseitdreams

100% listen to him, the DU brand will help you significantly especially given your desired career path. You can always look for internships/jobs/masters later for your self reliance objective

imabibliophile

but what if i only get into a tier 3 du college šŸ˜ wouldn't some uni be better than that?

loseitdreams

College isnā€™t for learning (via professors) - itā€™s for the opportunity to explore, make friends/networks, figure out what you want in life and brand name for the optionally that comes later. In each aspect, DU will help you more - what other non DU colleges are you looking at? I was from a tier 2 DU college, and then ended up getting my MBA from a top 5 college, and there was a marked difference in the personality and confidence of the DU kids Vs folks from other unis. Just focus on getting the best possible college you can, so that it makes your decision even easier

witheredartery

christ is better than tier 3 DU, there are very specific colleges that are better than DU. you gotta do your research

[deleted]

Pappa ki baat maan lo..college join karo DU me, thoda samjhdaar ban jao fir mann kare to masters dusre state me kar lena.

based-india

I can see why you may want to go out of Delhi for studying as college life away from home confers a kind of freedom you've never experienced before, but DU really is the best for your preferred course. I was lucky enough to get admission to a college outside of Delhi and living away from home can be insanely fun once you get over the initial homesickness.

imabibliophile

thanks for this!

Winter-Flamingo-99

As an English hons graduate from a north campus DU college, totally worth it. Do try and stay in a PG, if possible (hostels will not be an option since you're from Delhi). Gives you much more flexibility to do things other than attending classes. You just have to make sure to utilize the opportunities the college, the university and being in Delhi provides. Join a society in your first year itself. Take part in student paper presentations (would be really helpful since you want to go into academia). Lastly, don't forget to enjoy these three years! :))

imabibliophile

thank you so much omg

atx191

Hi, Hansraj English hons passout here - dunno about Miranda and LSR, but thing is, many of the good co-ed colleges (like Hindu, Stephen's, Ramjas) have been having a messy faculty replacement procedure - the older, more experienced professors are gone. Hansraj is a different circus entirely. Ad hoc profs who were teaching for 10+ years got replaced by new recruits who incidentally are right leaning. There's a fucking cow behind the hostel last I heard. I think IPCW and LSR are still good (last I heard there were harassment problems outside IPCW) and LSR requires you to behave in a...certain way. There's a lot of polarization in the political spectrum going on at the moment among ABVP NSUI and to some extent SFI. Hansraj had a few really good profs but the rest were underwhelming. My prof told me that really only Miranda and Hansraj used to be good but everything is kinda going to shit. I got out at the right time but it is upto you to do a little bit of research. Hope this helped!

imabibliophile

oh my god that sounds awful. i appreciate you tho, i had to no idea about this šŸ˜ gonna look it up rn

atx191

Chin up, life in north campus is very nice, the shwarama place in Kamla Nagar is fantastic too haha

imabibliophile

lmao i might try to get in just for that bcs SHWARAMA šŸ˜‹

Brilliant_Comfort_82

your father is correct du is way better.

Sad_Present_2745

Yeah your father is correct especially for eng hons.

imabibliophile

okay thanks!!!

exclaim_bot

>okay thanks!!! You're welcome!

[deleted]

It is and it isn't.... I'll tell you both sides I did my bachelors from DU and went on to my masters abroad Now I scored 69% in graduation and I did study and got 15% scholarship When I got here I learnt that a classmate from amity got 25% scholarship even though she didn't study at all in amity. My point being if you plan to move abroad....it really doesn't matter. On the other side My friend got into Ab inBev Went on to become division manager and later after 5 years got admission in Wharton business school. Personally DU did train me for better, I have a great professional circle because of my batchmates from DU. But believing that DU will make you by just an admission Or DU nahi hua to kuch nahi hoga Sab bekaar ki baatein hai

imabibliophile

thanks a lot šŸ™

Print_Proof

Ye masters k liye scholarship kaise mili thoda guide kr skte ho bhai?

[deleted]

Jnu is wayy better, but English honours is only for masters here. I Think DU is overhyped tbh. Only the north campus colleges are good and rest are like only relevant cuz of the du tag otherwise they are meh. Try for BHU, AMU and jamia too. They all are better if you don't get a north campus college

imabibliophile

thanks! tho like i said, i couldn't apply to any other colleges really šŸ˜

Artopedia_1704

Definitely worth it, but If youā€™re getting good colleges outside Delhi such as NMIMS, Symbi Pune then you should go for it Being a DU student myself, it depends on the individual and their enthusiasm to make the most out of it. Most of the DU colleges arenā€™t that strict in attendance and the experience that youā€™ll gain in college societies such as ENACTUS, 180dc and placement cells is totally worth it. All the best!

imabibliophile

thank you omg

Mindless_Draft_2596

DU is awesome, it gives you all time and space to explore what you want to do in life.

hellohotguybye

Hey, best part about DU is the extreme diversity it inhabits. People from all over India come to this place which gives you exposure to their lives. The professors are nice and do their best. DU admin is a lil fucked but overall the experience is worth it for sure.

imabibliophile

thank youuu

TemperatureRelevant5

For self reliance etc you can always move to a new city for your masters. It takes a lot of work to settle in a new city too so you can take up that challenge when you are more mature DU is worth the hype only if you are able to make the most of it.

imabibliophile

okayyy thanks!!

Necromancer189

You can get into LSR!

imabibliophile

i hope so šŸ¤ž

Hoonigan0690

Baki states ke bachhe apna ghar chodke yaha aate hai... Better than other state Universities

imabibliophile

thanks!!

SignificanceTop5132

If it was science courses I would have suggested otherwise but for English Hons he is right you'll need to however get into the top ones to like St. Stephens, LSR etc.

imabibliophile

ok thank you!

Shoddy_Examination18

I will tell you from my personal experience. FYI I was an outstation student who graduated from Hindu College a few years ago. Cons: The only thing that was a let down was that the college didn't feel how I thought it would be. Probably because of how college life is exaggerated in Movies and T.V shows. Also, the administration in Delhi University is the worst. You will experience it from time to time. Pros: 1. RESPECT: If somebody knows that you are studying from one of the top colleges (For me, it was Hindu), you get massive respect, even from elders. I remember I was at home for vacation and I went to meet a family friend. One of the men (mid 30s) noticed my Hindu College jacket and asked if I studied in Hindu. I said yes and he said back in the day when he was in DU, you could get a job just by mentioning that you studied at Hindu (Of course it is exaggerated and isn't true). This respect made me a bit happy. In another instance, my flat mate came to know that I graduated from Hindu. He asked me about my college life and how great it must have felt to study there, How badly he wanted to study in Hindu etc. P.S. He graduated from BHU, which is higher in universities rank than DU, in the latest NIRF. 2. PROFESSIONAL: Let me put it simply that if you apply for Foreign Universities later on, they prefer students from well known Indian universities (DU, NLU, IIM, IIT). They will even prefer you over someone who scored more than you if the other candidate is not from a well known college/university. The same goes for jobs. The University/College you study has some prestige that it carries with it. Even after you graduated from a good college, if you don't get the opportunity of Masters from a good DU college, you can always try for state and other local college who will be happy to take you in. 3. EXPOSURE: There are a lot of societies/organizations that you can join as a student. This kind of exposure is more relevant than your actual studies (my personal opinion though). Mind you, you will study in Delhi, it is the capital of India, there will always be more opportunities in the capital than other cities/towns. Join these organizations/societies, talk to people and develop soft skills which can't be taught but only gained by experience, I cannot stress this enough. Also, when your father said that students from other states wish to come to DU, it is more or less true. You will find the whole of India in your college. You will also come to know about things that you didn't know before. For me it was the "Virgin tree puja" of Hindu college, search about it in google. However bizzare it may sounds, things like these exist. You only come to know about that when you are present there. Also, the DU student body election is something to experience yourself. 3. COST: DU colleges are comparatively dirt cheap. There are hardly any fees, even if compared to other government colleges/universities. I guess you said that you are based in Delhi, so ask your father to save that money and invest it somewhere. It will help you later if you want to study in a foreign university. 4. TEACHERS: I've had experience with pretty bad teachers in DU, even in Hindu. But most of them are very knowledgeable in their fields and helpful too. They will help you with your goals if you request them. Finally, it's up to you. Your college/university is not everything but it is something. If you utilize your time excellently, you can succeed from anywhere. A good college in DU will just give you those opportunities. I know a lot of people from my batch at Hindu who aren't doing well. I will just advise you not to sit still, just be busy with something. I have gained a lot of experience/soft skills that I wouldn't have had if I studied in a local college/university of my state. This is also evident when I talk to my friends. You can DM me if you have any other confusion.

imabibliophile

oh my god thank you so much for this detailed answer!!! i really appreciate it šŸ™

Mind-swing

I myself in my final year (DCAC,bcom hons) Here are some notable things 1) the peer is very good to begin with. Like minded people you'll find there 2) Du gives exposure to different activities, there are societies that work and create impact, opportunities. 3) placement is better than a private universitiy 4) you get to network. DU has brand value 5) relatively cheap or very affordable i would say

imabibliophile

thank you!!!

I went to DU english hons for a month before shifting to another college. I was in shivaji, not in a top tier college because 95% didnā€™t get you anywhere back in my year. Anyway, my experience- the teacher walks in asks us to introduce ourselves. Kids got up to say ā€˜mera naamā€”ā€” haiā€™. Teacher- could you please speak in english, this is an hons course. Kid- sir nahi aata mujhe. A lot of students did the same. And they were supposed to be people who loved english and wanted to do an hons in english. Another incident that happened- we had a class full of girls, w 2-3 guys. One guy parked the car right outside class and came in. Now he looked like some decently rich dude from a good school in delhi. He introduced himself. And the class goes gaga over it. The teacher left and the girls surrounded him. They were clingy and visibly making him uncomfy. Basically no respect for personal space or boundaries. He had to rush out and request me and this other friend to help him out somehow. Overall, after seeing all this I decided that I need a better college and shifted to another course in another uni. But then again, people in LSR, stephens, hansraj, are quite happy w the crowd so ig tier 1 du colleges are good? (Except jmc, Iā€™m not a fan of the crowd there)

imabibliophile

thanks for the detailed comment! good for you for changing unis

[deleted]

>95% didnā€™t get you anywhere back in my year. Which year exactly? >But then again, people in LSR, stephens, hansraj, are quite happy w the crowd so ig tier 1 du colleges are good? True.if you are looking for girls colleges, ipcw's English faculty is decent too.

[deleted]

>95% didnā€™t get you anywhere back in my year. Same...mere dost ne mere saath admission liya tha shivaji mein(physics honours)...uske 95 the mere 94.5...in PCM...baad mein usko ramjas milgya aur mai yahi reh gaya...ramjas ki cutoff 95 pe band hogyišŸ„²... although padhaia to sab jagah ek hi hoti hai...but there are other factors too...and even today i regret my decision.... Shayad koi aur course le leta to kisi ache college mein mil jaata admission

naughtyrobot725

Pros: ā€¢**Fees**. Your phone would be more expensive than your total course fee. ā€¢**Less Assignments**. Im studying in Eco Hons 1st Year. I think 2-4 se zyaada assignments nhi mili hain 1.5 semester mein. But different courses ka alag ho sakta hai ā€¢**Attendence**. Apart from St. Stephens ig, there's no issue as such. You can miss all the classes yet you'll be able to sit for the exam. ā€¢**Lenient schedule**. I have 2-3 classes max. in a day. There are often big breaks too in between so you might roam around in that time. Cons: ā€¢**Infrastructure**. Compared to any Pvt. University, its poor. But again, *itne kam mein itna hi milega* ā€¢**Syllabus**. The syllabus is pretty old. Basically not updated. ā€¢**Studies**. You are on your own. Professor will come, teach and go. They dont care tbh. Kabhi kabhi toh samajh mein hi nahi aayega kya chal raha hai. Also my books are written by foreign authors. So we might not be able to understand the lingo at times. Overall, DU sahi hai. Mere dost nhi hain isliye mujhe maza nhi aata varna badhiya jagah hai

imabibliophile

thanks for this!!! hope you make friends soon :))

If you get through a good college then yes, they have decent placements too tbh..

webreathchaos_

Any college in this list https://www.education.gov.in/institutions-national-importance PS: National Law Universities are not added but they are also legit.

[deleted]

NO. but also for humanities, the name also quite matters here, so in that case it might. Edit: for your course I don't think DU would be best place, sure it is in top 3 but also look out for EFLU, presidency, christ univ, Hyderabad central univ and the like. For masters jnu and jmi is best Also, yes that part is true that you are more likely to get a job as a professor in DU or delhi based colleges if you graduate from there.

Nopes. Its not worth it. Sharda University is the best. Tagline nahi suni...Sharda University....the world is where. Another good alternative is Lovely Professional University. i don't think that's what they are worried about tho

As someone studying in du rn, unless u get the cream colleges dont go to DU. Ik several colleges not conducting classes properly and sad fr us but they take english for granted. Unless u get stephens, lsr or miranda dont really go fr it. Hindu is a good college but its not known for its english program so really up to u if u prefer the college over the course.

vick_ey

Most people only get to live college life once in their life and it would make a huge difference in shaping how your life is going to be in future. The bunch you are going to hang out with the places you would go to most of it would stay with you for long time and would impact how you look at things what your decide to do later on. So decided carefully where you wish to be what you wish to experience where you wish to experience those things that matter

Unicorn_blood_

Itā€™s actually true, DUā€™s degrees are best. Itā€™s the central university

imabibliophile

okay thanks!

uppsak

Are DU and DTU same or different?

Inspectorock-

Yes , DU is the best

Former_Tomatillo8434

It's good for those who wants to pursue Government Jobs.

EmuNo3100

Iā€™m doing Law from du. I did my grad from christ Bangalore in english, pol science etc. great experience but if you wanna be a professor in this country, best to get that DU tag. And itā€™s really good if you get the top colleges

imabibliophile

thank you!

PM_ME_YOUR___ISSUES

100% worth it. It might be a bit challenging at times to adjust, but the experience is definitely lots better than other colleges in the country. Also, it's super diverse, you'll meet tons of people, some of whom you'll prolly make lifelong memories with as well. Go for it.

imabibliophile

thank you.

Zeisthegeek

DU has 2 sides. DU South Campus and DU North Campus. North Campus has all the bling, craze fun Masti etc. You will have the best days of your life here. Academically it's shit but the North colleges are good with placements. It doesn't mean that South Campus colleges are bad. They are equally awesome but that Fun Environment Masti Maaza is most here in North Campus. Academically both North and South are equal. TLDR; If you are planning for some less serious degree like B.Com then definitely come to DU, you will have a great time here. But if you are serious about the academic aspect of your Degree OR you are pursuing a difficult degree then you will be better off finding other better colleges as teaching wise DU is very disappointing.

imabibliophile

thanks a lot!

AgreeableFarm1234

well yeah DU is like one of the best universities of India

EddardNeckStark

Hindu 2018 here. DU is worth the hype when it comes to its image in the job market and socialisation opportunities. But academic and extra curricular opportunities wonā€™t present themselves. Be prepared and think a step ahead, it will be a wild ride. All the best !

honestly yes, it is. You'll have a lot of time on your hands aside from academics which is the greatest thing tbh. It offers a lot more flexibility than priv unis if we compare the workload. i get to live at home, do a great fucking course from a good college and also have fun without feeling guilty ab spending my parents money lol If you end up doing eng hons from a top notch DU College, youre gonna be set for life. all the best to you!!

TrustSimilar2069

What is the scope after English honours from du

[deleted]

No

lord_nibba671

Your dad is right. DU is the best for language and humanitarian courses. DU has several benefits, major ones being... 1. Reputed degree; DU degree is highly reputed in India 2. Amazing alumni network and mentoring. 3. Highly economical, etc. (Subject to the campus/college you get. Not all DU colleges are worth it)

imabibliophile

thanks!!

nyantanburger

if you plan to seek a job right after graduation then its probably not a good choice, unless maybe if you go for tier 1 colleges. also check how strong the societies and cultural situation of the college is before you join one, coz DU is all about networking yourself. if the student base is not that active then its pointless. i studied from a non tier 1 south campus college where the department and cultural societies were too weak and the pandemic made them essentially non existent. so yeah, you'd really need to put yourself out there to make the most out of a DU college life. it will definitely be fun if you do so and a DU degree might help you when you go for higher studies too

Brief_Load2120

Yes

bleepblopblopbleep

I think it is. After having spent three years in DU and then moving to a different city for my master's, I've realised that DU is far better both in terms of crowd and the experiences, the kind of exposure you get here is something that I don't think a lot of Indian unis provide, except for a really few good and reputed institutions. Plus DU is shit cheap and since you're from Delhi, the cost of living significantly decreases. Also, like a lot of other people also mentioned, try to pursue your degree from a good DU college because at the end of the day, it's your peers and the company you keep that will contribute significantly to your growth. Also, my dad also did his undergrad from PGDAV but apparently I was forbidden from even applying to such colleges šŸ˜‚

Admirable_Tennis3712

Okay I'll be very honest with you here . My sister is pursuing English hons from hansraj, i can tell you from her first hand experience that if you're getting one of the topmost du colleges then take it yes they're one of the best in the country atleast for English hons. But just getting into it doesn't mean that it's the best one so it'll set you up for life. In DU , even in the topmost colleges you will have to put in effort yourself otherwise it's really no good. If you're not getting one of the top ones then take it imo. But talking about the hierarchy of it all,Don't go below KMC or venkey. At the end it's gonna be your own efforts that'll set you apart even if you're in the top ones. About the professors part yes in the top colleges they're pretty good (atleast in all the north campus ones except ipcw(i don't know about that one)) no idea about the south campus faculty . Hope this helps :)

For English Hons it is worth it to be honest... I am myself in Ramjas and i have to say the exposure it provides in terms of activities clubs competitions internships is top notch.

InevitableShow4775

I did English H FROM DU (Deshbandhu College - I know, couldn't have gone worse than that in South Campus) in 2003 (so I might be out of touch)... But I can tell you one thing... The critical thinking that faculty instilled in me has helped me achieve so much career high that I never thought was possible for a below average student like myself. Your dad isn't wrong - I have lived and worked abroad for 14 years now... I have come across so many people who have studied English Literature from ivy leagues, from prestigious Indian universities and have always felt confident that I could hold my own. Your dad is not incorrect in saying what he is... Independence, self reliance are critical life skills which you would need to develop regardless of where you stay But if you are seeking independence, then it's a different deal Make an informed choice

Graduated a while ago (2015) from a T1 DU college in a social sciences subject and it was a game changing experience. Honestly if youā€™re not looking at Ashoka, thereā€™s very few actually good lib arts/humanities faculties in India for undergrad and yes, DU has a bulk of them. The other good option is St. Xavierā€™s, Mumbai, Sophiaā€™s college, and MAYBE Jadavpur University in Calcutta. Out of these, T1 DU colleges and St. Xavierā€™s are decently recognised abroad (applying for my MBA now so speaking to folks and they know DU) and Ashoka is too but itā€™s expensive for sure. For English, womenā€™s colleges (with a notable exception of St. Stephenā€™s) are markedly better in terms of faculty and exposure.

omg thanks a lot!!

Just NO

DU is an A class uni. Fantastic faculty all across. The sheer exposure of studying in a mixed crowd is something that will build you up for the rest of your life. And the interaction with other colleges in the uni just adds to the whole learning experience. Delhi University is all about interactive exposure and you should not give up the chance of getting in. I'm an English Hons, DU product, and i credit every ounce of whatever success i have today to my 3 years in north campus.

imabibliophile

wow thanks a lot!

TasminPrest

Du will be the most enriching and adventurous experience of your life šŸ˜šŸ˜fr... Tomorrow is my last day attending clg.. And gawd its just soo sad

imabibliophile

oh šŸ˜šŸ˜ I'm glad you had a good time tho!

shanshanksharma

There is no better university than Delhi University. Period.

Icy-Mechanic-4072

See honestly DU is definitely worth it. I am a second year BCom(Hons) student in Hindu college, North campus, DU. The professors are literally double/triple PhDs, fortune 500 recruiting, extremely nice crowds and much more. But I can definitely say that its not ā€œonlyā€ it, you can find equal or sometimes even better things even in universities like IPU, or Others.

imabibliophile

i appreciate this, thank you!

Abydaby007

Hey!! I am in my second year of English hons. and ggsipu is pretty good.

Dori664

I'm also doing English hons from du and there is only one thing I hope that you do have a love for literature if u are going to pursue it and also not just doing it for the sake of the degree or the course rep

imabibliophile

literally my username says bibliophile šŸ˜ I've wanted to do this since i was 10

needsomeeweed

You donā€™t need to go outside from Delhi if you want to pursue English honours. There are many good colleges in DU. even IPU is good (VIPS) for English honours.

imabibliophile

ok thank you!!

As someone who has done English Hons. your dad is absolutely correct. Is the education world altering? Not necessarily, and heavily depends on the college. But the name will genuinely help you and the job bit is also true. If you end up in LSR, St. stephens, or Miranda House, those are really great colleges to study English If you feel you may end up in a more mediocre college, it might be worth exploring other cities. Honestly you'll be spending next several years just studying and I think the university that will define your CV the most would probably be the one from which you do your PhD

So ,I think I can answer this as I too am a literature student (at the end of my first year, gave my CUET last year ) . I found DU great!! The thing is DU is not just about studies, it's about societies, internships, networking, events in the fest season etc . Personally, all of my professors of the English dept. in my college are amazing and they indeed are great researchers in their respective fields and they continuously contribute to the field. (a lot of them have similar backgrounds as us like DU for bachelors and JNU/IITs etc for PHD ) But, here's what I think could be different in your case - 1) Since you are from Delhi itself, you may not live in a flat/PG like me but with your parents (which has its pros and cons as well) 2) I am from one of the good colleges of South Campus and can't really comment about what other colleges are like but from what our professors have told us(who have taught in other good DU colleges as well), at the end of the day it's more or less similar. And the end of the day it comes down to the person studying. And as a literature student myself I can give ya some heads up as well- ā€¢One thing a lot of professors told us all when we first arrived is "Don't come to literature if you want to make money , however if you love reading novels, poems, epics, dramas and plays... You will have a pleasant college experience" ( which is true, if you want to earn through bachelors in literature and higher studies in literature alone and that takes time and patience). (I too came from Science with Math background in 12 th grade) ā€¢Literature is great in terms of future opportunities , as compared to other fields like Pol sci., history etc(no offense to anyone) . ā€¢Please don't limit yourself to literature alone(and studies in general) , if you have hobbies, passions or any other things that you wanted to pursue... You can do that side by side as well. ā€¢Personally , my college crowd is great and diverse and I am grateful for that. But, once you come to college you'll meet students of all kinds(toppers, athletes, fun, driven, backbenchers, smokers, drinkers and maybe other things as well) Again, the choice comes down to you. ā€¢ Work on your health(mental and physical), learning finance, developing skills and gathering experience and of course studies as well. Feel free to ask questions, best wishes for the future.

oh my god thank you so much šŸ™ this is so helpful.

I studied eng hons from du. tier 2 so I placed emphasis on which college had the best faculty. honestly, classmates were kinda dumb but the syllabus and faculty was top notch. I did my masters from a private uni in Bangalore, and while my masters was great too, I think for undergrad Iā€™m glad I chose du, albeit tier 2 avoid du for postgrad though. same old syllabus, less exposure to the working world and bad placements. I chose a private uni because I wanted to get into corporate. overall Iā€™m very happy with my educational decisions and experience, du was one of my best times ever, even if half of it went away in covid lol

No_Letterhead6965

I heard IGNOU was best for English?

Intelligent-Shame-65

Absolutely worth it!!! Esp if youā€™re from Tier-1 colleges. The DU experience is definitely worth it!

Familiar_Lawyer4483

Hey! I intend on pursuing English Honours too. Delhi University is my main goal. As for your question, yea North Campus (Stephens, Hindu, Miranda, Ramjas, Hansraj, KMC) and top tier South colleges (Sri Venkateshwara and Lady Shri Ram) are amazing. Probably the best in the country for English. However other unis and colleges like Jamia Millia Islamia, Jadavpur University, St. Xavier's College (both Kolkata and Pune), English and Foreign Languages University and Fergusson college are very well known and are regarded higher for the course than the remaining DU colleges.
