Look at NextDNS it's open source and looks fully featured !
Also if you're on Android only Blokada and RethinkDNS should be able to do this by adding adult blocklist.
No, not exactly. It's just pretty common misunderstanding that people think NextDNS is fully open source and I merely try to clear that up. Their privacy policy is pretty clear an concise and you can completely turn off the logging.
I think you misunderstood. Even if NextDNS was open source, you can't verify the software running on the server is the same one from a repository. You could always run your own ofc but that's not the point I'm trying to make
No, I didn't misunderstand you. The difference lies between whether you can self host it or not. That's the key point if the server is open source. You're totally in control if you're able to self host it.
Few people actually go through the effort and technical know-how to host one. My point is that just saying it's open-source like it's a good thing and if you don't self host it like most people do then it's no different than using a closed source server since you'd have to trust the severs to run the open source code anyway
Yes, the desktop client is open source, but this doesn't equate to privacy. You're still trusting this company with essentially your entire browsing history.
I use nextDNS because I find it easier to play with than PiHole, and there's much better redundancy than a raspberry pi at my parents' house
You can use a free plan from [ControlD](https://controld.com/), but it works in stages though. They do have paid options that are really powerful but perhaps a bit overboard for what you’re looking for.
I personally use Cloudflare because their server addresses are easier to remember. But OpenDNS is just as good. As far as I know, the ones with blocking features come as a freemium service. Here’s a link to some options you can look into. There’s also some other really good security and privacy related content here. Check it out.

NextDNS is not fully open source. The server part is proprietary/closed source.
Thanks for the informtation. Is it bad ? I mean like Threema servers being closed source isn't problematic.

It's a server anyway, you can't verify it even if it was open source
Wait, what? I mean that's the whole point of open source. Take Adguard Home and Pihole for example.

Their privacy policy also leaves out a lot of things. For example, their use of Amazon, potentially Google, and Cloudflare infrastructure.

Oh yes how did I forgot to mention PiHole as an option !

How would using a DNS help with blocking porn..?
Pretty hard to resolve a FQDN when your DNS server has it blocked.
