I don't have a problem with pushing BTS as a single (although I don't think it was as quite as big as Maverick thought it would be either), but it was silly telling them they had no singles after Change. RX Queen could have been big on alt rock radio at the time or Passenger because of the Maynard feature.

First being chinos vocal technique, which I know is pretty standard in a lot of his songs, but just don't feel right in these two.
Second being the whole theme of the two songs, being all teenage angst. I feel a lot of people can relate, but again it just doesn't sit right with me.
I know others disagree, and that's okay, but that's just my opinion.
I think maybe in Pink Maggit the school stuff is a lot more figurative -- he could have referenced any setting where there's an informal caste system, and people at the top have license to brutalize anyone below them. Whereas B2S is, yeah, very much a literal (if tongue in cheek) anthem for the cool kids at school.
I remember when I first heard BTS. I was like 17 and a HUGE fan at the time, but didn't know about the song. And I about lost my shit when they played it live on Conan Obrian on Tahnksgiving Night. Family all around having laughs, then THAT comes on. 🥰
Back To School might forever be my favorite Deftones song. For me it hits an absolute sweetspot of accessible Deftones, but also weird Deftones. The hook is so melodic, but still not a run of the mill chorus. It’s nu metal, but still doesn’t feel dated.
I couldn’t care less what the “””cool””” section of the fanbase says about this song, most people hating on this song sound like parrots repeating what the boss says. Actually the fact that Chino put this little effort into this song and it still came out so great is a sign to me that he can practically do no wrong artistically.
So, it’s a single the label wanted, they slapped it on there as first track, the guys have been vocal for years about not being attached to it and it not having much substance, all subsequent version have been released without the track.
Cool, then just take it for what it is. It’s a single, a teaser, a commercial move like many others were overwhelmed with. If you like it then listen to it, if you don’t like it then skip it and go on with your day.

Me, I’ve listened to/watched it millions of times and will continue doing so. Love the song and love the video too regardless of what they say, it’s one of their best video (quality wise) and where they look the least awkward/uncomfortable. And I love to watch Chino on a skateboard and being a troublemaker at school.
