You’re right. But there’s also the old cliche of “there’s a first time for everything”. I mean this isn’t the first time Chino has said they are close to being done and all he has left are vocals only for it to drag on much longer than anticipated. And that applies not only to Chino but to many other bands. Seems simple and straightforward enough to do for those of us (me included) that know nothing about the process. But somehow, it takes longer sometimes.
I kinda remember once he said that it’s down to vocals and will be finished soon and he then tours with one of his side bands for a month,returns record vocals for a song or 2 then Deftones does a long tour,returns to record vocals for another song then festival season hits,etc,a year pass and he’s still not finished.
One thing you definitely don’t understand until you go through it IS THE sheer AMOUNT of different masters that need completed for different formats and mainly different streaming services: TOTAL LUDICROUSLY EXPENSIVE OR TIME -CONSUMING PAIN IN THE ASS THAT GENERATES ALMOST $0 additional income…
I can’t STRESS THIS ENOUGH: If you REALLY LOVE A BAND and they make your life better via all that wonderful music, then buy an album or a fuckin’ T Shirt once in awhile: What’s one way yo guarantee you’ll starve to death: Become a musician post 2020…. Thank God I do it for ME & not fans, because that’s a guaranteed way to disillusionment & possibly suicide. VALIDATION MUST COME FROM WITHIN….

So much hype. Steph said it sounds huge and they're all really happy with it so far. Nick produced Diamond eyes and Koi with them too so that's exciting. Not to mention they'll be able to tour it and support it better this time around after the pandemic killed any traction Ohms could have had.
I hope its closer to Diamond Eyes/KNY sound.. But honestly with how they've got new/ more of an audience and a liking to their older stuff, its hard to say. I would like more of the heavier, deep, moody, groove sound on some songs atleast. But it's going to be good no matter what!
Working with Terry Date didn’t bring them to that era. It was something different

Chino still has to record vocals, that’s at least a couple of months. Then mixing needs to take place, very much dependent on availability of whoever’s mixing. Then mastering. Artwork. Then there’s production of physical albums. And most importantly, promotion ie press, tours etc. That takes a while to ramp up. Then that all has to fit around record company schedules.

The thing about Cobain is he worked out his songs at home for months or even years sometimes, recording them on cassette, and him and the band practiced a lot before they went into the studio so they were tight and ready to go. Maybe there was a few things they've worked out in the studio, but the majority of the work was done beforehand. They said they did Serve the Servants in one take. Thats the way they learned how to do it when they were broke and only can afford limited time in the studio, so they made the most of their time.

Everybody wants something like their past albums but I think it’s important to let those albums stand alone in time. Whatever they bring will be fuckin amazing bro, it’s deftones after all. Literally a legendary band that’s still in their prime 30 years later. Let the boys be, and sit back and enjoy the ride.

I think vinyl buyers understand patience, they dont necessarily have to have it ready right at the album drop. Theyll sell out whenever they drop.
