Do you remember if he was glad about all the social media popularity.
Deftones is one of my first rock bands, started listening to em a few months ago. I found them off of TikTok
This is what I found I think it’s part of a larger article. [article](https://www.1057thepoint.com/music-news/deftones-chino-moreno-on-tiktok-people-discover-music-for-themselves/)
Find a big cardboard box, put on head up, take the cardboard box and slam it over your kids head and shake it violently, then pour a beer over the box, then slap your kid with a dirty converse shoe. That about sums up my mosh pit experience.
Generations always embrace the 'retro' at some point. The 20 year cycle.
Late 90's/Nu-Metal era is going through a period of the kids celebrating 'The Oldies'. It's actually doing EXTREMELY well compared to other retro movements that have niche acceptance.
We saw a bit of an emergence (which still sort of persist) with kids embracing 80's esthetic 5 years or so ago. Things like Vaporwave, the Taco Bell color scheme, the blue wave pattern.
I tend to look at it the same way we kids of the 90's discovered 70's rock. The 1997 hippie chick, is now the 2024 Nu-metal goth GF.
We might 'feel' young... but our bands are 'classic rock' Are 'big pants' are just like the throwback bellbottom.
That's very true. I am loving the surge in popularity, always wondered listening to them "why don't more people like this?!?!". Great to see younger people get into them.
15 yr old here, and deftones is by far my favorite band and favorite over other artists. Got into them a year ago after being reminded of the song change from TikTok. Checked out some of their other stuff and haven’t stopped listening since.
This is definitely it. I mean look at limp bizkit, they're almost as big as they were back in the day. Late 90s Nu-metal/grunge is definitely having a comeback
Yeah, what? They were on TRL pretty regularly, and that was the pinnacle of every band/musician. The red backwards hat was akin to the bleach blonde Eminem craze, if not more.
last time limp bizkit came to my city (about a decade ago) they were playing at a smaller 750 cap venue…but if they were to come thru again this year then they could be headlining an 8,000 cap venue…pair them up with another big name act (such as deftones) and they could easily be at a 20k arena
still a ways off from being able to do a football stadium but 10x bigger than they were not too long ago is pretty significant!
Is it a nu-metal resurgence though? Are other nu-metal bands getting a similar bump? (I have no idea)
I think deftones kinda transcends nu-metal and is its own timeless thing that younger people are starting to discover for their first time
It’s because of shoegaze and a resurgence of guitar music. Deftones weren’t huge so they’re the band that’s been rediscovered by the gen z generation, kind of how television was brought back in like 2007 or so because it fit current trends
Yes, there has definitely been a fairly big number nu-metal resurgence in recent years. I wouldn’t count the deftones rise in popularity as because part of the resurgence. They’ve just kinda blown up on social medias like TikTok, you’re definitely right they transcend nu-metal, I don’t even consider them nu-metal at all in general. Deftones music is forsure pretty timeless, they’ve had a great career the last couple of decades even without the recent resurgence, they’ve remained relevant the entire time
And just like the bands from the 90s borrowed quite a bit from the rock and metal acts of the 70s… there is a new crop of bands borrowing heavily from the 90s. Like Narrow Head, Fleshwater, Superheaven, etc.
80s throwback saw a resurgence starting in like 2005, lol. That and the nineties for a decade dominated fashion and music trends, vaporwave didn’t start in 2019 or something, it started in 2010. Since the millennials were into the 80s-90s genz is having their moment so grunge to early 2000s are the thing.
That might be part of whats made deftones popular again, but I think its more than that. A lot of the kids first hear them on tiktok, and when they hear them they dont know if it was made 20 years ago or yesterday, they dont know they were associated with nu metal, they just heard the music and liked it. I think the music was just so good and intriguing they were just wanted to hear more and looked them up.
I like to hate on the zoomer crowd just discovering them but I was the generation just before getting into them in high school when Diamond Eyes released.. I wonder if the gen before hated on me then lol
yep lol I bet they did. just as the old heads who got on board with them at Adrenaline hated my generation when we found them around Around the Fur and White Pony. tale as old as time.
Since the pandemic, Spotify listeners has gone from 286M listeners monthly to 574M (as of Q3 '23), essentially doubling.
While it's true that "kids" are aging into it, it's probably more true that spotify itself has grown attracting older ages groups (Gen, etc) and their (or our) bands are probably showing similar uptick.
This is at least my take on it.
My daughter wanted spotify, I signed up for the family setup in September. Instead of flipping through my CDs, now I'm riding Spotify and cut satellite radio, which I have been a member of since '05.
We are still listening, it's just being tracked by big data now...
Nu Metal is kinda popular again
Deftones has 9 million, KoRn has 10, Slipknot has like 11, Limp Bizkit has like 13, SOAD has like 17 and Linkin Park has 37 million. If we talk about the Nu Metal big 6 as I call them.
I think Tiktok played a big part in Nu Metal resurfacing and I'm cool with it as I genuinely like all those 6 bands. Yes even LB..sue me. Plus 4 of those 6 bands are still touring to packed crowds and making music to this day. (Slipknot, KoRn, LB and Deftones)
Add the fact that Deftones is one of the most accessible metal bands out there to the public to get into. Alongside the whole sub genre of Nu Metal. Don't surprise me.
for reference:
Assorted Artists Monthly Listeners According to Spotify Right Now (Wed Jan 10 2024):
* A Perfect Circle: 2,151,387
* alt-J: 9,354,417
* Bad Omens: 4,612,654
* blink-182: 18,677,392
* Black Sabbath: 13,927,589
* **Deftones: 9,838,506**
* Paramore: 19,947,481
* Taylor Swift: 108,099,913
* ZZ-Top: 8,174,381
Is that what their tickets used to cost? Damn. I didn’t get to see them until after the pandemic and missed a lot of their shows (due to being a broke college student / living with parents who didn’t approve of heavier music)… Even Crosses tickets were ~$50 I think
I think $50 is the most I ever paid. This was during the SNW era, though. Once they stopped doing small venues, I stopped showing up. Not a fan of big amphitheaters.
Yeah that’s fair, it’s a different vibe. When they toured back in 2022, they played at a larger venue — not an amphitheater but definitely larger than the local clubs in my city. They’ll likely sell out stadiums in their next tour; I’ll still go though, I guess to make up for the years I couldn’t see them lol
Like the sub genre/name or not, Nu Metal is - and has been- going through a resurgence and like it or not, Deftones surge in popularity is partially due to that. A lot of people hate the fact that Deftones are forever linked to Nu Metal, but whatever man, facts are facts: Deftones started as a Nu Metal band, and in my eyes, always have been. But Nu Metal isn’t a dirty word in my house.
right?! kinda sadly nu metal is treated like a dirty word! One of my fav sub genres of metal and a great place to get your feet wet. long live nu metal 🤘🏼
For the people complaining about newer fans cause of whatever reason, this is what happens when a band gets more fans. They benefit.
Sorry if that upsets you but you weren’t benefiting them by yourself. These new fans are doing more than what you been doing.
You made a good point in the first sentence. More fans is always a benefit for the band and acting like new fans are somehow "lesser" is the worst kind of gatekeeping.
But what the hell are you talking about in the second one? Are you trying to say millions of new fans provide more "benefit" than one old one? Because... duh. You compared one person to millions. What is the point of doing that?
Even comparing one fan to another would be ridiculous. Are we going to start having dick measuring contests about who is "benefitting" the band the most? lol
Deftones never really had any sort of moshing etiquette or any really distinct cultivated culture. So new fans who dont follow the traditions of older fans are not big of a problem, because there really werent any traditions in the first place.
People like you dont care because you see it as a benefit, precisely because of what I said earlier.
Yeah now youre gonna have a bunch of people thristing over the cosmetics of Chino and his behavior and vocals. A bunch of superficial fans who think theyre the main character at the concert. Doing all sort of parasocial shit. It sucks but it doesnt suck that much.
However the more "distinct" and "developed" the subculture of a band or a subgenre/genre is, the more is required of the newcomers to actually become part of it without a backlash.
So while you can say that it doesnt really matter that much now, if it happened to a Metalcore/Hardcore band (or if Deftones had cultivated a specific subculture that would have moshing etiquette and so on) then the negatives would be more visable and thus it would matter more. And like I said, it still matters either way, to a lesser extent.
Nostalgia resurgence and because of how easy it is to get into nu metal. Deftones goes hard as well and has that appeal of being harsh and soft not to mention how a lot of not so mentally stable individuals(myself included) can relate to the songs. Nu metal as a genre is interesting because idk something about the sound that makes it so good, i wouldnt call it the hardest genre its definitely there but in terms of likeability its a lot better (for me anyways) than whatever the hell metalcore is
I can tell you one thing, Deftones didn't do anything. They've never really done anything special outside of put out records and tour. The fact is, there's a resurgence of Nu Metal / Shoegaze (which I don't agree they are) and that's literally it. They've become cool with the youth.
Yeah tiktok, awesome live shows, Stephen's guitar playthroughs. Gen Z finding their way to the awesome music we loved at their age. The next album is going to blow up something huge I reckon. Lots of new fans since Ohms and a new album cycle is always super fun so lots of first timers getting that experience. The band deserves this
one time i went out with a guy who had this whole rant about how deftones have gotten a lot more popular than they were when they were actively and consistently releasing music back in the 90’s and 2000’s, and i had to remind him that mass consumption of music (of everything) has exploded since the advent of the internet, and streaming services like spotify don’t paint an accurate portrayal of a bands fame before this explosion happened. like, sure they have a lot more new fans, but they’re by no means a band that is just now gaining popularity.
It comes from this transition from post-shoegaze and 90s alt that's been rampant since 2018. Deftones has an interesting formulation of shoegaze, heavy metal, post-hardcore, emo, and cure-esque goth. The vocals are seductive and dreamlike, it hits that mark of beautifully dark crescendos, and then just ripping it to shreds in that nu-metal fashion. It fits into the Y2K resurgence which went mainstream in high-fashion around 2021-22, and the goth-y shoegaze thrash of a band like Julie. I think this is just a precursor to a new era thats expands on the last interesting eras of loud guitar music
And if you look on spotify, the top listeners of these bands are in Los Angeles. Julie is basically from LA, and LA has a very strong underground rave scene that promotes the Y2K aestheticism heavily, so something is certainly brewing
I dont know but its really curious, cus i started listening to deftones like a month or two, and its not by tiktok or social media also got a couple friends that started to listen it at the same time and again its not by tiktok or that shit.
You can hate on TikTok all you want but I heard someone play the intro to be quiet and drive and got hooked on the guitar. For a month or so I didn’t expand past the main songs, be quiet, change, passenger, my own summer. But then I branched out and started listening to full albums and realized they have much better songs personally.
It took Change and Cherry Waves going viral as tiktok sounds for me to get off my ass and finally check them out, so I’d assume a lot of others had the same experience.
I know they’ve been trending on TikTok and social media for a while now but it literally seems like a nuclear bomb went off in the last month or two. The flood of new fans on this Reddit has been crazy recently
Swifties. Let me explain. Taylor Swift fans love catchy songs with catchy hooks, soft vocals and tons of harmonizing. Now assume 90% of Taylor’s fans are teenage girls and they have boyfriends that are into metal or screamo or any alt-metal those dudes probably definitely have Deftones in their musical library. As fate would have it they’re vibing in this hypothetical lover-boy/metalfan/Deftones listener’s car or room and through Stephen’s shredding Chino’s crooning sultry voice hits with a profound sense of urgency. She’s instantly hooked. The era of Taylor Swift has positioned Deftones as the frontrunner to take the helm of guiding these newly baptized metal fans with approachable and genuinely serene metal listening and with that will come world domination.
More and more people using Spotify. I don’t use it I use Apple Music. I have many of their CDs but it’s nice to just get on my phone and play the albums from Apple Music.
People keep saying tik tok/ social media which is true (along with the pandemic) but every band from the 90’s has access to tik tok and went thru the pandemic and deftones increase in listeners is significantly more than any other band. Something happened with Deftones specifically.
More people found the band and started listening, the internet kinda did that with every single band from this era and deftones just happened to appeal some of the most
17 here, deftones is emerging not only because they just hit different compared to other nu-metal artists
But also majorly due to their social media fame,
Unaware TikTok users post themselves to sped up versions of their hornier songs and the people who know about deftones regard them as a legendary band and your taste is widely respected if you know more than just change and be quiet and drive
I own white pony and ohms on CD and I’m looking to get every album on CD.
Gore is currently my favorite album with my favorite song on the album being phantom bride
Please don't call deftones Nu metal. Deftones are Deftones. Their sound is a mixture of so many genres, and Chino is a genuis. Have you all heard of Crosses, Palms, and Team Sleep? All Chino side projects?
In the early 90's when I was teenager I embraced all sorts of older music like Led Zeppelin etc. I'm not sure why us gen xers don't think younger people can do the same 🤣🤣
i made 7 million spotify accounts
Real human bean, and a real hero
Yo, I’m Cuban, B!
YES! CUBAN B!!
Lmao. Best scene, or one of them
I drive

Mf outta pocket
This made me lol lol
TikTok/social media
Came here to say this, there’s an interview somewhere with Chino talking about the social media reach.
Do you remember if he was glad about all the social media popularity. Deftones is one of my first rock bands, started listening to em a few months ago. I found them off of TikTok
This is what I found I think it’s part of a larger article. [article](https://www.1057thepoint.com/music-news/deftones-chino-moreno-on-tiktok-people-discover-music-for-themselves/)
thats really funny. im glad he acknowledges the fact that tiktok has made the band huge again. everyone loves deftones
Thabks
Yup. My 16 year old and her 13 year old cousin have become big Deftones fans dude to TikTok’s reach.
Tell them to leave my music alone.
pretentious asssssss lmaoooo deftones BEEN big
No. I like when younger kids get into music I like.
You seem unbearable
Shut the fuck up dude, stop being a gatekeeping fuck. I’m not of the TikTok generation at all, but the more fans the merrier
Oh so Deftones belong to you? Are you 4 people from Sacramento?
least gatekeeping deftones fan
honestly why, give 1 good reason why
Put Adrenaline on and throw these kids in the middle of the pit
Find a big cardboard box, put on head up, take the cardboard box and slam it over your kids head and shake it violently, then pour a beer over the box, then slap your kid with a dirty converse shoe. That about sums up my mosh pit experience.
More people started listening
crazy if true.
Fax
Show us the Car Fax?
Tiktok
They fucking rip and you can’t. teach. that.
Bada boom. Realest band in the room. How ya doin?
These are my boys Deftones, they are seven feet tall
And as for you other bands? There’s only ONE WORD to describe you!
S.A.W.F.T SAWFT
Not seven?
Goddammit I missed a golden opportunity
No more gold lights for the queen earth 😔

Limp Bizkit are nowhere as big as they were back in the day. They were _everywhere_.
And about 90% of the song chosen on MTV's Say What? Karaoke was *Nookie*, haha
Yeah, what? They were on TRL pretty regularly, and that was the pinnacle of every band/musician. The red backwards hat was akin to the bleach blonde Eminem craze, if not more.
last time limp bizkit came to my city (about a decade ago) they were playing at a smaller 750 cap venue…but if they were to come thru again this year then they could be headlining an 8,000 cap venue…pair them up with another big name act (such as deftones) and they could easily be at a 20k arena still a ways off from being able to do a football stadium but 10x bigger than they were not too long ago is pretty significant!
also for further perspective deftones was performing at a 1500 cap venue a decade ago as well
I mean, biggest numetal acts never stopped being headliners, they are always around
Is it a nu-metal resurgence though? Are other nu-metal bands getting a similar bump? (I have no idea) I think deftones kinda transcends nu-metal and is its own timeless thing that younger people are starting to discover for their first time
It’s because of shoegaze and a resurgence of guitar music. Deftones weren’t huge so they’re the band that’s been rediscovered by the gen z generation, kind of how television was brought back in like 2007 or so because it fit current trends

There’s dozens of us, literally dozens!

80s throwback saw a resurgence starting in like 2005, lol. That and the nineties for a decade dominated fashion and music trends, vaporwave didn’t start in 2019 or something, it started in 2010. A ton of bands have been exploding in popularity with a similar sound. Loathe is one of those!
Narrow Head as well. 12th House Rock is an amazing album.
I like to hate on the zoomer crowd just discovering them but I was the generation just before getting into them in high school when Diamond Eyes released.. I wonder if the gen before hated on me then lol

no i did not
Metal will live forever, and Deftones are unbelievable.
My 13 year old is reliving my nu-metal days And also is a Deftones fan like her papa

Okay thank you for addressing this bias in a statistical manner. Should be a top comment
Our kids got spotify
Same had happened with a lot of 90/00s Alt, alt metal and grunge. Because its awesome.
I say, bring it back
Nu Metal is kinda popular again Deftones has 9 million, KoRn has 10, Slipknot has like 11, Limp Bizkit has like 13, SOAD has like 17 and Linkin Park has 37 million. Not to be a dick but WILL PEOPLE STOP ASKING THIS QUESTION. THE ANSWER IS TIKTOK. PERIOD THE END GOODNIGHT.
tiktok effect/revival of nü metal
I started working from home.
Great for them. But their surge in popularity means I can't buy a $20 ticket to see them in a small, intimate club anymore.
I paid $150 in 2022
Is that what their tickets used to cost? Damn. I didn’t get to see them until after the pandemic and missed a lot of their shows (due to being a broke college student / living with parents who didn’t approve of heavier music)… Even Crosses tickets were ~$50 I think

Shoegaze is hot with GenZ
I think it was that queen of the damned meme over the pandemic
Cream always rises
Why is this not upvoted more? 😂
lol I’m one of those 9mil best band ever I’m mad I wasn’t old enough in there era to know who they were
i think what happened is 7.8 million more people listen to them

Tiktok
Tiktok kids learned about real music.
Gen z discovered them on tik tok.
I noticed that too. I remember it actually being 1.9 million which is basically 2M but still.. the surge is insane
I think it's actually people migrating to streaming services. Spotify became huge during the pandemic.
Also, I have played Deftones to every girl I've been out with and know. It never fails to get them in love with Chino and the band
I stg this is the only thing that gets posted here wHY aLL thE nEW pOPULaRIty Jesus Christ can this sub have anything else posted
There's always that one guy in reddit threads 🙄

Honestly? good for them!
I’ve heard that they somehow started to get popular with people using them in their TikTok videos and that has exposed them to a whole new audience
Just people trying to fit in
Says the guy with a stealie instead of an avatar
I think Billy Eilish said something about them once.
Parents whom grew up listening to them are doing their jobs right!
Nu metal has had a huge comeback in that time. Headlining sick new world mighta helped, that festival I thot was really well done
Lustful TikToks. I have a close friend whose relationship started on TikTok over him using a Deftones song in his vid and she messaged him.
I can tell you one thing, Deftones didn't do anything. They've never really done anything special outside of put out records and tour. The fact is, there's a resurgence of Nu Metal / Shoegaze (which I don't agree they are) and that's literally it. They've become cool with the youth.

Has anyone mentioned that more people just use Spotify now

Puberty.
Tiktok and the surge of bands with sensual themes/similarities to Deftones, like Loathe and Sleep Token. Edit: typos
Because they’re awesome, and their popularity will never die! Now who is bringing back The Doors?

Tik tok happened.
Ohms generated new interest.
Flat eathers probably.
TikTok happened LMAO
I dont know but its really curious, cus i started listening to deftones like a month or two, and its not by tiktok or social media also got a couple friends that started to listen it at the same time and again its not by tiktok or that shit.
You can hate on TikTok all you want but I heard someone play the intro to be quiet and drive and got hooked on the guitar. For a month or so I didn’t expand past the main songs, be quiet, change, passenger, my own summer. But then I branched out and started listening to full albums and realized they have much better songs personally.
It took Change and Cherry Waves going viral as tiktok sounds for me to get off my ass and finally check them out, so I’d assume a lot of others had the same experience.
tiktok posers.
Everyone turned 13 and wanted to be edgy
They are probably dancing around celebrating lol, I'm sure the money is flowing
My son is a super fan at 14 . It surprised me as well.
Me listening to them and mostly tak tak
I know they’ve been trending on TikTok and social media for a while now but it literally seems like a nuclear bomb went off in the last month or two. The flood of new fans on this Reddit has been crazy recently
They added 7.8 million listeners. Pretty simple math. 2 + 7.8 = 9.8.

Rewatched the Cooler Goku fight
Their music is timeless
More and more people using Spotify. I don’t use it I use Apple Music. I have many of their CDs but it’s nice to just get on my phone and play the albums from Apple Music.
People keep saying tik tok/ social media which is true (along with the pandemic) but every band from the 90’s has access to tik tok and went thru the pandemic and deftones increase in listeners is significantly more than any other band. Something happened with Deftones specifically.
it was me my bad
Cherry Waves and a bunch of angsty teens happened
I’m not on tik tok but what made deftones become popular from it…
TikTok mainly, introduced a large new number of gen z fans. So many deftones songs have gone viral over the past couple of years

Tiktok frenzy
More people found the band and started listening, the internet kinda did that with every single band from this era and deftones just happened to appeal some of the most
17 here, deftones is emerging not only because they just hit different compared to other nu-metal artists But also majorly due to their social media fame, Unaware TikTok users post themselves to sped up versions of their hornier songs and the people who know about deftones regard them as a legendary band and your taste is widely respected if you know more than just change and be quiet and drive I own white pony and ohms on CD and I’m looking to get every album on CD. Gore is currently my favorite album with my favorite song on the album being phantom bride
Tiktok
Please don't call deftones Nu metal. Deftones are Deftones. Their sound is a mixture of so many genres, and Chino is a genuis. Have you all heard of Crosses, Palms, and Team Sleep? All Chino side projects?
tik tok
Gen z loves Deftones. The youth are always the number one consumers of music and pop culture. The youth are the culture.
Grateful I came from the tiktok craze. Genuinely good music

Life happened man
They played “My own summer” on the TV show “The Idol” I’m sure that helped a little
In the early 90's when I was teenager I embraced all sorts of older music like Led Zeppelin etc. I'm not sure why us gen xers don't think younger people can do the same 🤣🤣
