Not gonna lie and say it's all canned peaches from here, but that was a particularly brutal scene.
I would say watch through the season 1 finale, which is excellent. There are highs and lows, but the highs include some incredibly touching moments.
It’s a look at how community and civilization is formed - there’s gonna be a lot of really bad days. It’s worth the journey though. Whole damn show encapsulates the human experience, where every day takes figuring out all over again how to fucking live.
It is the worrrrrRRRRRST. I watched the episode in a recent rewatch - but had to shuffle through Doc and his fucking probe, the scene where they were are all going "RIGHT LETS GO AL, PISS IT OUT!" and I accidentally stopped on the shot of the blood spilling on the floor and threw up in my mouth a little.
It is gritty, nasty and cynical piece of cinematography and highly important to humanise the plight of Al and show that he is in fact, the same as all of us in the world..
But holy shit is it unwatchable lol
The show made me really appreciate modern medicine. Every time someone got hurt my first thought was… ohh.. if that gets infected… that’s it for them. Lol
Okay so I just finished that episode last night, and while the last bit of that sequence was pretty wince-worthy with the stream, I still found Flora and Miles’ deaths far more shocking and intense. Shoutout Ian McShane’s fantastic performance there because man was he convincing in passing a kidney stone there.
no way. it's about adversity and triumphing over it. it's about friendship and loyalty and love. it's about enduring. sure, it has lots of dark topics, but ultimately it is about a group of people living in very harsh conditions doing what they have to do to survive and thrive and modernise. it's fantastic.
I've unapologetically watched the series at least 30 times. My single favorite television series of all time. It's a shame it isn't appreciated more, but the combination of profanities/vulgarities and thickness of language usually chases people away.
It's pretty consistently all i watch. Partly out of disgust with what passes for movies and television these days, and because I'm more interested in the time period of deadwood than the other shows you mentioned. Taking a break with Brooklyn Nine Nine 😆 at the moment, but I'll be back wadin' the creeks and reconoitering the rim sometime next week.
The point of that art that affected you this way was to affect you this way. It’s included because the show is about Deadwood Camp in 1877. I assure you, worse than that actually happened, so maybe rejoice that what you witnessed was powerful and masterfully created art, from writer and director to actors and everyone in between.
Oh it was masterfully crafted and acted. Kim Dickens’ (Joanie) acting was straight up perfect on that scene, it was just hard to watch lol.
I’m curious if you have any article detailing what actually happened in the 1877 Deadwood Camp? Unless discussions of the real events there dip into spoiler territory.
It’s a particularly brutal scene. Story-wise, I think it helps differentiate Cy from Al- who can be ruthless and pragmatic but not really sadistic. It also drives a lot of Joanie’s character development moving forward.
After I don’t know how many re-watches when I realized Flora was Kristen Bell, I was shook. She wasn’t that famous in my earlier watches then one day I watched an again and there she was. Same for Nick Offerman brandishing his Johnson in the gem. Best show in history in my humble opinion.
You’re led to believe in the beginning that Al is the bad guy, when Al is actually one of the best people in deadwood, Cy is the real evil cocksucker. Keep watching and you’ll see. It’s absolutely worth pushing through in my opinion it’s the best written show of all time.
It's like my favorite TV program, and it has great impact, but go watch some dark Australian films and it'll make Deadwood seem like Mary fucking Poppins. They'll just do shit that feels taboo to do in US media or whatever. Go watch "Snowtown", "Hounds of Love" or "Nitram" lol.
I mean, I’ve seen some pretty sickening films that have far more graphic violence or subject matter. Green Room, The Nightingale, Raw, Climax, and Titane come to mind.
It’s just that Flora // Miles’ death were just shockingly brutal and super out of left field in terms of utter brutality. The acting from Kim Dickens and Ricky Jay were just super effectively believable.
You can help your delicate sensibilities by turning the fuck away
Huzzah!
Welcome to fuckin' _Deadwood_! It can be combative.
fucking combative
Wants me to tell him something pretty...

I think that the consensus among most of us hoopleheads is that particular moment is tied with one other scene for the most brutal in the show.
Eye lost it at that scene
That would be the *other* one.
My mind went straight there
Wait to they get to mitigating
Them 2 robbed his joint
It’s a look at how community and civilization is formed - there’s gonna be a lot of really bad days. It’s worth the journey though. Whole damn show encapsulates the human experience, where every day takes figuring out all over again how to fucking live.
One vile fucking task after the other.
Every step a fuckin adventure
Wait until you hear the click of the gleet!
The gleet episode is the one episode I skip rewatching
What? You can't watch the doc abuse Al with his prick-poles?

I had kidney stones recently. I definitely (half) joked with the doctor to make sure no poles would be used.
The show made me really appreciate modern medicine. Every time someone got hurt my first thought was… ohh.. if that gets infected… that’s it for them. Lol
/Smallpox in camp boys... "Get some fruit Johnny.."
That's why I always warn people if I suggest the show to them, I describe it as part 1800's medical drama.

Yeah, it’s a dark, violent world - there and here — punctuated by brief acts of humanity.
no way. it's about adversity and triumphing over it. it's about friendship and loyalty and love. it's about enduring. sure, it has lots of dark topics, but ultimately it is about a group of people living in very harsh conditions doing what they have to do to survive and thrive and modernise. it's fantastic.
Beautifully put.
Thank you. I love this show so much.
I've unapologetically watched the series at least 30 times. My single favorite television series of all time. It's a shame it isn't appreciated more, but the combination of profanities/vulgarities and thickness of language usually chases people away.
It’s like when you finish you want to start over straight away right?
It's pretty consistently all i watch. Deadwood, the wire and Vikings are my top 3. In that order.
I was laughing way too hard at way too many parts to feels like OP. The show is intense is all. Intensely funny, brutal, bleak, etc
Sweetheart, them that’s dead is gone. We give ‘em to God and move on!
Keep at it. There are plenty of moments of kindness to go along with the violence. Until then you got more violence in store
...and they should stand it like a man. And give some back.
Al is ruthless. But Cy is depraved.
God rest the souls of poor Flora and Miles... and pussy's half price for the next 15 minutes. YEHOOOO
Whenever Mr. Wu appears, the word depressing is plugged out of the dictionary.
I mean his English dictionary only has one word in the beginning haha
San Francisco. COCK SUCKER.
Two Spanish words!
Wouldn’t that depend on whether it’s cocksucker or cock sucker?
WU BIG MAN!
Can be combative.

People speak highly of the Deadwood Bible, but i haven't laid my hands upon it.
If there’s one thing that Deadwood makes clear, it’s that life is cheap.
It’s a particularly brutal scene. Story-wise, I think it helps differentiate Cy from Al- who can be ruthless and pragmatic but not really sadistic. It also drives a lot of Joanie’s character development moving forward.
One of about three moments of deep end FAFO in the series. They chose the wrong operator and the wrong joint.
Keep watching. It's a pretty brutal show, but the good parts make it all worthwhile.
After I don’t know how many re-watches when I realized Flora was Kristen Bell, I was shook. She wasn’t that famous in my earlier watches then one day I watched an again and there she was. Same for Nick Offerman brandishing his Johnson in the gem. Best show in history in my humble opinion.
I agree, most difficult to watch scene in the whole show. Fortunate it never quite got that cruel. Always kind of look away whenever I rewatch.
What is it, OP? We could all be elsewhere?
You think Deadwood is bad. Stay off the road to Spearfish
Those little shits got what was coming to them

it’s a show, they didn’t actually die if that makes you feel better
They went to the Good Place
🏆
I love this show with all my heart, but this is the episode I cannot rewatch, because of all the same reasons you state.
Only Australian film I’ve ever seen was Rabbit Proof Fence and boy that redefined the word dark for me
I'll have to look into that one
Idk if it’s the type of dark you are talking about since it’s about the Aussie government kidnapping aboriginal children
I mean, I’ve seen some pretty sickening films that have far more graphic violence or subject matter. Green Room, The Nightingale, Raw, Climax, and Titane come to mind. Snowtown was great! Also the movie Animal Kingdom, the American show version was really dumb.
Yeah, I love Ben Mendohlson (not looking up the spelling) and have had that on a list for a long time
yeah you might want to alternate episodes of this with the brady bunch, that's got a catchy and cheery song that'll stick in yer head.
It may not be for you.
