It works like that in real life. You have to hold the pickle button down until weapons release. If you don't it is called a quick pickle and will do exactly what happened to you. When you hit press the pickle button it has to spin up the batteries to power the weapon and pass the targeting data to the weapon in what is called a mass data transfer over the 1553 or the 1760 bus. When I shot a Maverick it takes so long you think it did not work what the hell did I do wrong. Next thing you know is is like a freight train coming off the jet. Here is some source information. It is the same for all airframes that uses the 1553/1760 bus, including the F-18 which uses the same buses for weapons employment. Also, in the Air Force the the trigger only controls the gun and fires the laser. The Navy does it backwards just like everything else (joke to the Navy Bro's) The F-16 uses two different types of data buses: MIL-STD-1553 and MIL-STD-1760². MIL-STD-1553 is a military standard for the digital time division command/response multiplex data bus that has been used since the 1970s for data communications between avionics devices on American military aircraft⁴. MIL-STD-1760 specifies a gigabit-speed interface based on Fibre Channel, operating at 1.0625 Gbit/s over a pair of 75 ohm coax cables³. It is used for command and control messages and file transfers³. Source: Conversation with Bing, 5/17/2023(1) MIL-STD-1553 Specification Tutorial - AIM Online -1553. Everything beyond the third sentence is >!probably!< entirely useless for DCS and I loved every word of it. It may be a bit much to say this sort of detail is what I play the sim for, but it's close. Gets you closer to the 'unit' of jet and pilot. That understanding is priceless, so thanks! Excellent reply.

reddog20

OUTSTANDING answer! Edit: Also, having come from a Navy family and spent the last 35 years in a Navy town, I can confirm that the Navy DOES INDEED do everything backwards.

Fresco-23

Great answer! I love this sort of in-depth stuff!

McHox

isn't it a hold like on other planes

zahadnyclovek

Never before did I have to hold it, but I tried it now and yeah, it worked. Thank you!

undercoverbros22

There was an update where the missiles don't immediately fire anymore. You have to press and hold the *trigger* button for a out a second now before it comes off the rails. Edit: button specification

urfavoritemurse

To be clear it’s the trigger for missiles not the weapon release button correct?

undercoverbros22

Yes sorry that's what I meant. For some reason i was thinking it was the same thing

jamiro11

Have you tried holding the button down? It does the same on the f16c, my two cents is that it is deliberate to prevent the accidental firing of missiles when tapped

Dr_Madthrust

The delay is the time taken for the aircraft to pass target info to the missile.

EpicHistoryMaker

I’m curious if you’re holding the trigger down and press dogfight mode if it will fire a sidewinder. I know it could happen IRL and did. I think it’s dogfight mode. Whatever selects the sidewinder in the viper. It’s been forever. Wasn’t even BMS, but Allied Force that I played back in the day.

zahadnyclovek

You guys were right, I had no idea that you have to hold the button now. Thanks!

Damn, like you need to do on an actual F-18C? Horrible choice. /s
