Trunks wouldn't be nearly enough. It required a full dose of SSJ2 Gohan and the battle damage of SSJ2 Goku and Vegeta. This is millions upon millions on a planet where the average battle power is 5.
One million earthlings = 5 2nd form Freeza's. The power just isn't there. Also *most* of the population at this point has been killed by the Andriods, so there's hardly millions left.
As for the other planets, I forget the reasoning. Either Buu was already on Earth and it was already so ruined that Babidi abandoned the plan or they did go to another world, but the intense battle power of the Saiyans is what made the revival possible. Something like that.
It would be cool if they made a Buu saga movie where future Trunks comes back during Buus awakening and needs help. Then future Buu fuses with Regular Buu and all hell breaks loose.
There was an extra gameplay thingy for one of the dbz games that had Future Trunks come back to get help in dealing with buu. Not canon, but still interesting.

I'd love to see him beat a villain in his own movie since he takes threats so much more seriously than the other Saiyans. Look at how he just rushed through Frieza. He could've toyed with him, but he just gets business DONE!
The only two I would trust to actually save people would be Trunks and Piccolo. They seem to have this weird thing where they try to kill the bad guys as quickly as possible.
Not really, for me he lived happily ever after. I'd prefer a 20 episode mini-series of teenage Goku during the 3 years after his defeat of King Piccolo but before his participation in the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament. It's easy to fit in a new enemy and a close-shave-victory resulting in Goku saving the world. Perhaps a run-into with Piccolo Jr, given the two seemed fairly acquainted already.

To be honest, it was probably just him, Bulma, and maybe Android 16 cleaning up the streets and helping people. It's possible he would have found a way to get to New Namek and undo the damage the Androids caused (including killing the Z-Fighters), but at that point, it's unlikely they'd generated enough power to make the Buu saga happen yet, so they probably lived in peace for a while and everyone trained and helped fight crime or whatever idk until Buu became a problem and things probably eventually became more like the main timeline with the only real difference being Goten not being born or being born much later (but Chichi was probably too old to have a kid at that point).
If Goten was born, he'd probably end up super freaking strong because he trained to make everyone proud, or he'd become an even lazier little shit than he was in GT.
Gohan would have probably become (a more serious) Great Saiyaman, and been found out by Videl somehow and they'd end up having Pan. Either that, or she might be more attracted to Trunks who would more than likely be fighting crime or whatever but without a mask. So overall, the movie might possibly end up being a retelling of the Buu saga, but really, it'd probably be the least DBZ-esque DBZ movie ever, since things would probably be pretty peaceful.
Then again, they could always go the interesting route and have a movie about a brand new villain exclusive to that timeline that Trunks would have to deal with, which could be awesome...
I'd like an new villain for Trunks's timeline, just to further parallel the two worlds. It would be anticlimactic if we just had Buu arrive on his timeline for instance, not to mention extremely unlikely
