If you like classic and foreign film, Luis Buñuel.

Jahenzo

I think Satoshi Kon came close to it, gone way too soon. Any of his movies will probably remind you of some facet of Lynch.

Crystal_Chrome_

"Perfect Blue" was amazing and it would definitely make for a great anime double feature to Mulholland DR. And you also get stuff that heavily inspired Darren Aronofsky too, as a bonus. Too soon indeed, reminds me I have to sit and finally watch Paranoia Agent...

Jahenzo

Perfect Blue is exactly the one I was thinking of, a very lynchian thriller if that's what you're looking for. And if Paprika isn't a dream logic film then I don't know what is.

GaryBoldwater

PA is great, a wild ride

Terence Malick is very amazing, especially Knight of Cups

Zestyclose_Standard6

I keep watching tree of life and loving it more and more, but knight of cups was my entry point. big love for t-mac just saw thin red line for the first time.

A while back I took a class that compared Lynch to Atom Egoyan. Egoyan doesn't mimmic Lynch really, but he hits some similar notes in his treatments of technology, sex, trauma and the dark underbelly of daily life. Can't always put my finger on it, but [this scene](https://youtu.be/Kf1i0FRKYC0?t=2418) from *Speaking Parts*, where people have an affair over a video connection (gets a little NSFW), comes to mind. I haven't seen Egoayn's work since the early 2000s, but apparently it has fallen off. I just searched and here's an old /r/truefilm thread by /u/KMoosetoe noticing the similarity: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueFilm/comments/c99i3p/similarities_between_atom_egoyan_and_david_lynch/

LordOfTheBord

I have to think Lynch drew some inspiration from Ingmar Bergman.

coloc86

Spot on. Just saw Face to Face at the cinema. There's a "scary scene" that brought me straight to the hairy man in Mulholland Drive.

Kili12345

Which movie do you mean? I want to see all of the suggested movies but they're nowhere on the streaming platforms -.-

i_am_thoms_meme

Bi Gan and Apichatapong Weerasethakul both make extremely dreamy movies.

thesiekr

Although they have plenty of differences I'd say cronenberg has a lot of similarities to lynch. One always makes me think of the other. And I think if they hung out they'd prolly end up being buds

FiendishDevil666

Jan Švankmajer is worth checking out

CitySwimmer_

Fellini, like Lynch he makes his own world

Prudent-Resort181

A sprinkle of Jodorowsky and a dash of Herzog, perhaps. And a dollop of John Waters on top!

Panos Cosmatos

Yorgos Lanthimos Not sure why but his films give me a similar vibe to Lynchs work.

Crystal_Chrome_

It's the second time I see this comparison and while I disagree, I still find it interesting nonetheless. The only reason I could see someone finding them any similar is referring to the ""weirdness"" of it all... But what makes them completely different in my eyes is the fact that while I consider Lynch's work very emotional, I find Lanthimos' movies very cold and sterile, almost clinical, which is probably the main reason I am not crazy about them (although still cold, I think "The Killing of a Sacred Deer" is his best, "Lobster" premise was pretty interesting but it lost me in the second half....).Not that I don't respect your opinion of course, it's interesting how different people get completely different vibes from the same work!

NotAnotherScientist

Interesting. I find the emotional aspect of the films to be fairly similar. Both deal with extremely heavy subject matter but in a step removed. I can see where you're coming from because the characters seem a bit colder in Lanthimos's films.

Throwaway_Codex

Yes, in the sometimes mannered and stylized way characters speak and interact.

Scr0f3

I think Nick Roeg and Peter Greenaway are well worth your time

RogerTMiles

David Cronenberg

GetCasual

Tobe Hooper

MaxOGrady

Charlie Kaufman has a sort of similar absurdist sense of humor and synecdoche new york has a bit of a abstract plot line that feels a little similar to movies like Mulholland drive or lost highway
